The Roots of Psychology

This essay will highlight the roots of psychology and how the different approaches emerged. According to Hothersall (2010), psychology dates back to the Ancient Greeks 700BC. Questions about the universe, our role in it, reasons and causes of all things brought about the roots of psychology. Rene Descartes, Plato and Socrates are among other Greek philosophers who tried to find answers to these questions. These philosophers believed in body-mind duality, that is, body and mind are two separate entities and mind could exist even after death (Raghunathan, 2012). On the other hand, Rene considered that there was uninterrupted transaction between body and mind, Plato was positive in that education brought change to the basic nature of mind and Aristotle thought that of each of these was the manifestation of the other and was pessimistic about the role of education in changing the fundamental nature of humans (Hothersall, 2010). In trying to understand behaviour, there have been an introduc

Ambition and Power: Lady Macbeth

A strong desire to do what one can to achieve something great, does not always have a happy ending. Deceit, extortion, and even the thought of murder can very well influence someone to get what they want. By any means necessary is the way to go. This is an unfortunate theme in "Macbeth", one of William Shakespeare's most famous tragedies. It is a tale that tells the story of a Scottish King, who's wife is the inspiration behind his means to take the thrown and claim his power. Violence and bloodshed are the ways to claim that seat. Although Macbeth has his own desires to do all he can to reach his goal, it is Lady Macbeth who encourages and forces him to get there. There is an evil that takes over her well intended ambition for her husband, family, and unfortunately it is what leads her to an uncontrollable state far exceeding her true love for Macbeth, and her best interests for her country. It is Lady Macbeth's thirst for power and her inability as a woman to gain that right withou

Do Abstinence Programs Really Work?

I remember in 5th grade being taught the miracle of life and how we came to be. It was a very short, brief section of classes that confused everyone and was over before it started. In 8th grade we had our first talk about sex and abstinence. I went to a strict Catholic school that only preached abstinence and not the use of contraceptives so you can see how I was surprised to find that in my sophomore year I had to take a course that's main focus was safe sex and the use of contraceptives. I think that a combination of teaching safe sex and abstinence is a good way to teach sex-ed. Teaching abstinence alone, while important, is not enough. A combination of parental support, the necessary knowledge about safe sex and birth control, and access to contraceptives, would effectively help to reduce the number of pregnancies and STD's among teens today. I believe that abstinence programs alone are not effective because they use inaccurate information, they are extremely right wing oriented,

Alexander Hamilton - Overview

What did Hamilton contribute and how was this significant? How does he compare to other founding fathers? Contributions: Advocated for the establishment of a national bank. Served as Washington's principal aide during the Revolutionary War. Wrote two-thirds of The Federalist Papers in support of the U.S. Constitution. Wrote Washington's Farewell Address. Utilized ambiguity of the Constitution's "necessary and proper " clause to legitimize control of the federal government and weaken the power of the states. Pioneered the idea of "implied powers " in American government. Used national debt to assert federal power by assuming responsibility of state debts; "If it is not excessive, [the national debt] will be to us a national blessing." Alexander Hamilton The Hamiltonian Philosophy: Emphasis on free market capitalism; government should provide the tools for people to compete in it. -Markets need to provide for human capital First Secretary of the Treasury. Assisted in founding the U.S.

Compare and Contrast: Frost and Dickinson

Robert Frost's "Directive"" and Emily Dickinson's "Because I could not stop for Death"" are both poems that deal with the past in relation to the present of the speaker. Although both Frost's and Dickinson's poems view the past in a positive light, each poem desires to act upon the past in a different way. "Directive"" desires to resurrect the past for the purposes of the living, as the speaker believes that the past is more desirable than the present, while "Because I could not stop for Death"" simply looks upon the past with indifference because the speaker already sees all of time from the perspective of eternity. Robert Frost's "Directive"" romanticizes both the entirety of human history and the individual past of each human being as desirable periods of time in order to highlight the vast difference between the implied beauties of simplicity and the cruelty of a life filled with unnecessary details. Conversely, Emily Dickinson's "Because I could not stop for Death" " only romantic

Governance of Financial Institutions

The current International Monetary Fund (IMF) voting rights, based on how much money a member state contributes to the IMF through the quota system, does not fairly reflect the changing global economic landscape. The economic importance of countries whose economies have quickly expanded is not expressed fairly in their quota allocation and the minute quotas for smaller, less-developed countries prevents them from having any real say. The simplest, and most attainable, reform to the voting system that will give expanding nations and smaller, poorer nations more of a voice within the IMF is to adopt a double-majority voting method, or voting by count and account. Voting by count and account is a method coined by Professors Barry O'Neill and Bezalel Peleg, who sought to create a voting mechanism for international organizations that recognized the greater power and contribution of the larger members but preserved some influence for the smaller ones. (O'Neill and Peleg, 1) Two tallies are made using this method: the number of supporting members and the sum of their "weights. " In

Karen's Christmas by Amalie Skram

In the short story, "Karen's Christmas", Amalie Skram demonstrates several examples of literary naturalism. Although Karen and her baby had the will to live, they faced many harsh realities and eventually died of starvation. The book title, "Karen's Christmas"" seems to elude to a happy, festive holiday story. However, Skram tells the reader how the world turns down a innocent young girl and her baby. The story is an example of naturalism, portraying how society or social conditions challenge the powerless individual. As Karen goes through harsh conditions, nobody helps her get out of her horrible situation. In her early childhood, she was raped by a stranger. However, the rapist faced no consequences. Karen struggled to overcome emotional pain of rape as she endured a cold winter with her baby. The constable, who discovered Karen living in a shack, tries

Loyalist Perspective and the American Revolution

Loyalists were colonists who decided it was best to side with their forebears, the British Empire, during the American Revolution. The Revolution was very much a civil war, as it forced people to choose a side - and that divided families. Apparently, loyalists believed it was morally wrong to betray the crown, sensing a need to remain loyal to the kingdom. While not wishing for war and hoping for a peaceful reconciliation to the conflict, loyalists stuck to the view that siding with the British was a "good option". Loyalists saw themselves as American (like the colonists), but first and foremost, they viewed themselves as British. The loyalists were given many nicknames by the colonists and viewed as traitors. Loyalists were known as tories", royalists" and kings men. In America today, we see the loyalists as the "bad guys". That's only because the patriots won the war. Our education system teaches us that the British were villains and the colonists were the heroes. What

Defining the Arts in Ancient Greece

In ancient Greece, many of the most important works in history were created. Along with these works of writing and art, terms and concepts to define these works were established. Concepts such as arete, ananke, hamartia, kalokagathia, and physis were terms that could define these new contributions to Greece. In literary works such as "The Odyssey", "Allegory of the Cave" and "Antigone", and in such forms as "Sculptures", or the Parthenon, we are able to see these how the Greeks developed these new concept words. Odysseus' will to overcome all his obstacles shows arete. Arete is a concept that the Greek peopley embraced. At first, arete meant excellence in war but later it came to represent overall excellence of a person; good values and virtues. In "The Odyssey", a man encounters many battles and obstacles throughout the his life, and in the first lines of the story, we are given the knowledge that main character is a man of great importance and excellence. "Tell me, Muse, the st

Choosing to Serve in the Military

Today, there are approximately 1.4 million people serving in the military. Most of them are fresh out of high school and wondering what life is going to be like after their tour of duty. In the military, we have to do what we are told immediately. There are benefits, such as free medical and dental insurance, as well as three meals a day. However, after leaving the military there is a whole list of new worries that no one talks about. A basic example of worries is figuring out how to pay for every meal as a civilian. There are benefits, such getting to spend more time with your friends and family. Instead of having things such as long deployments and a 24-hour duty day, one might have a nine to five or just be a full time student. After leaving the military, I've learned that these changes have to be adjusted to expeditiously or a veteran will find it hard to survive, like many of them are already struggling, in our society today. Occupational life is an example of the differences bet

The Super-Continent: Pangea

Did you ever notice when looking at a map that all the continents look like puzzle pieces that could form one big puzzle? Around 200-250 million years ago there weren't seven individual continents; it was only one big continent which was known as the super-continent, or Pangaea. The word Pangaea means "Entire Earth " which came from the ancient Greek word "Pangaia"". During the Pangaea Era, there were four time periods; Cambrian, Triassic, Jurassic, and the Cretaceous. According to geologists, Cambrian was the first time period of this era. During this period, the continents moved toward one another where eventually they crashed. As a result of the crash, the Appalachian and Ural Mountains (naming a few) were formed causing one big fender-bender! The Triassic time period, also the start of the Mesozoic Era, experienced drastic changes. During this time period Dinosaurs came into existence as well as unusual plant life. Late into the Triassic period the smallest mammal skeletons were found. Presently, these small warm blooded mammals seem to find their way into our homes, unwelcomed; yes you guessed it; mice! During the Jurassic period, the super-conti

The Worldwide Issue of Squatting

Squatting has become a worldwide issue, with an estimated number of one billion squatters across the globe. In every case study, squatters share one common trait - the search for a better quality of life. Relocating to urban areas has become an alleged solution to improve the quality of life and provide better income for the household. This movement stimulated a substantial flow of migrants to cities. However, their migration has only caused them another dilemma: adequate housing. In most cases, these migrants are financially incapable, leaving them their only option which is to illegally reside on unoccupied land. They all go to the cities in search of fortune, but they end up in squatter communities. A squatter settlement is identified by the lack of ownership of the land in which their houses are built. Squatter communities are located on vacant lands that can be private or government owned. In either case, there is no permission or contract in which the dwellers are given the cons

Ethics in Criminal Justice

Ethical Dilemma 1: Gun Rally Before, making any decision I would keep in mind that I am a public servant and have the duties of a public servant. My first duty is to protect, serve and uphold the constitution. Regardless of my beliefs for the gun advocacy group, I must exercise the morals and ethics of the law. Therefore, I would advise my fellow police officers of the upcoming rally and information provided to me. Cautious to let them know the information provided by an anonymous tipster and the accuracy of it. Foreseeing displacement of responsibility and diffusion of responsibility in the event the rally get out of hand, keeping the group has not has not applied for a permit. The police may stop the event if they foresee that the group has become physically aggressive towards others or otherwise present a danger to the public. Ethical dilemmas can occur in many ways, often when we least expect them. So long as their actions do not interfere with the rights and welfare of other

What is a Woman?

What are the key qualities and characteristics that make up a woman? There are many ideas and opinions that people believe women should and should not be, according to 17th-19th century ideas. All of these notions have brought on many debates and arguments for hundreds of years on what exactly is a woman. How women behave, their roles in society, their roles in a marriage, what types of freedom they have, how they spend their time, the education they receive, and many other things have been debated for hundreds of years. The constant battle between what is equal, what is fair, and what is right was a struggle for women because of the simple fact that they are female. They were denied basic human rights and freedoms that men received with ease because it was believed that women meant nothing more than a means to an end in the lives of men and as their role in the household. This resulted in hundreds of years of oppression and dissatisfaction of women because they were not treated as hu

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs

"Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is an autobiography written by Harriet Jacobs under the pen name of Linda Brent. Jacobs' narrative describes her struggle as a slave and her constant pursuit of freedom. Until Jacobs was six years old, she lived in a house with her brother, mother, and father. Jacobs relates the details of her early childhood as an unusually happy one for a slave child. When Jacobs is six-years-old, her mother becomes ill and passes away. Jacobs and her brother, Willie, were then under the care of her mother's mistress. When Jacobs was twelve years old her mistress died and she was sold to Dr. Flint's five-year-old daughter. Jacobs' father dies suddenly and she is denied the right to go to his funeral. Shortly after, Jacobs' grandmother was bought and freed by her mistress' sister because the whole community knew that the grandmother had finally earned her freedom. Jacobs' uncle, Benjamin, ran away from his master and was captured and put in jail until he was bo

Marginalization in the Movie Gattaca

The visual text Gattaca directed by Andrew Niccol, uses conventions to construct the protagonist Vincent Freeman's version of identity (as marginalized and disempowered ) but as being determined to overcome the discriminatory values and attitudes of his society. Gattaca tells the story of an invalid, who defies the odds and overcomes societies view of him. More about the society here " plot recount in a line or two future setting. The use of dialogue constructs Gattaca's society as valuing superior genetics. The camera shots construct Vincent's determination to overcome his version of identity dictated by Gattaca's society. Vincent Freeman uses his determination to overcome his version of identity dictated by Gattaca's societies values and attitudes, allowing him to triumph the valid world. Interactionism

Interactionism argues that the mind is separate from the material that encompasses it. Living organisms all have a sort of spirit or entity that is above the matter that makes up its body. This spirit or entity is unable to be described in material terms. In humans it is expressed as a mind. It argues how the mind is separate from the body and is not reliant on responses to external stimulation that sends signals to the brain to produce certain types of responses. It argues that the mind is able to act on it's own terms. Although people respond to external stimuli, we also respond in ways that show an aim for a situation that does not yet exist. If there is purposiveness, it implies that living things approach and work for a purpose which has not yet been achieved, therefore in the mind there is a goal t

Notes on My American Policy Class

Over the past sixteen weeks, I had a lot of fun in the POLS 432 class. I chose this course because it was major required. As an international student, I felt a little scared at the beginning of the semester since I know nothing about American policy and I don't have any friends in this class. It took me a while to adapt into the class style. First, we started from Shambaugh/Weinstein book, and the West Wing episodes. Shambaugh/Weinstein book is about introduction of the Art of policy making process. From the web book description, it says Author Paul J. Weinstein Jr., who was Chief of Staff of the White House Domestic Policy Council during Clinton's administration; he brought a unique and valuable insider's view to the book. This book also provides some real life examples that helped me a lot in reading some of the concepts. For example, I had no idea of how to write a memo when Dr. Robert Wood introduced us different types of memos. After class, I went back home and read the format o

The Influence of Advertising on Men

Men's magazines feature articles containing topic of interest to their subscribers: health, hunting, boating, racing, guns, technology and relationships. These magazines boast interviews with celebrities and stories by renowned writers, primarily about dating, how to become a millionaire in five easy steps, tricks to staying fit or ways of driving her crazy in bed. The mainstay of such magazines, however, isn't advice, current events or get rich ideas, but photographs of seductive, unrealistic woman wearing as little clothing as possible. The advertisements for health and hygiene products are the sexiest of all ads, with most containing sexual imagery. Nothing promotes and sells men's magazines more than sex. We shop with are eyes and Maxim magazine is no exception. The men's Gillette advertisement in Maxim is not only visually stimulating but gives a woman's opinion with the phrase "for whatever body style she likes"". A study by Ketchum Global Research sponsored by Gillette, indicates 74% of women believe that men should partake in at least some body hair remove, and 69% of men said women influenced their decision to expand thei

Truman Doctrine and The Marshal Plan

During World War II, many countries had been suffering the fire of war until the Allies won the eventual victory. Nevertheless, another difficulty came. How did those countries that involved in World War II recover from the destruction of the war? Because they had invested a great amount of capital into the war, they did not have enough money to rebuild the ruined homeland. In fact, they could even hardly support their lives by themselves. The economy of defeated nations was far worse than that of any other European countries on account of the currency depreciation and the inflation brought by the failure in World War II. On the other hand, the communist influence of the Soviet Union was rising and spreading from the east of Europe gradually. At the same time, the United States had excess commodities produced under the New Deal and was desperately looking for market to sell. As a result, aiding Europe was good for both Europe and America. In addition, the United States was trying to sc
