Parents in Digging and Those Winter Sunday

In the poems "Digging," by Seamus Heaney and "Those Winter Sundays," by Robert Hayden, both write about their father in reflective poems about childhood. Children don't notice a parents commitment required to keep their families fed, happy and safe. Heaney and Hayden narrate the poem, using nostalgia to paint the overall picture in the readers head. Both poems are going through memories of their fathers admiration and dedication to the family. The poets each have a different tone to their stories, one a pleasant memory as other more heavy hearted. There are similarities in these poems; they are both about paternal love. Both poems are in view of the son looking back to when he is a child. They are about young men in awe of their fathers dedication to family and his responsibility to provide for them. Robert Hayden writes about when he was a young boy watching his father go to work every day.  As he looks back through his memories of his father. Hayden re

Anatomy of a Motive by John Douglas

From the first few pages, I was hooked. This stuff is just so amazing to me. When you read this book, you are getting several decades worth of experience from one of the top FBI agents in the world of criminal profiling. After reading this book, I must say that I will see something on the news and think about what was said in this book. The author does a good job of laying out what type of people are most likely to engage in things like rape, murder, arson, bomb making, etc. Through years and years of interviews with everyone from average convicts to famous serial killers, the author has found certain similarities in the types of people who commit some of these awful crimes. He freely admits that he can't be 100% accurate on every case, but most of the people who commit certain acts can be labeled and categorized based on what occurred in the order of the crime with relative accuracy. The incident in Scotland when the book begins is a good example of this. One example of something I p

The New Reality of Super Humans

Has America developed a device that can give the nation "superhuman powers" such as those possessed by common superheroes in popular comic books? According to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), scientists have done just that. The most recent advancement in health technology is the introduction of the Electronic Prescription, or ElectRx. Of course this new technology will not give humans the ability to fly or have superhuman strength, but it will give the human body the ability to heal itself. The article from which this information is given is "Tiny Implants Could Give Humans Self-Healing Superpowers," by Elizabeth Palermo and was published on September 18, 2014 on LiveScience.com. The ElectRx is a small implant that would be injected into the body and it would "use electrical impulses to monitor the body's organs, healing these crucial parts when they become infected or injured." This device has the potential to revolutionize how Ame

The Compromise of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Embryonic stem cells are a type of cell that can be derived from human embryos very shortly after fertilization. Embryonic stem cells have the ability to specify into any type of adult cells and are thus said to be pluripotent. Because they are pluripotent, embryonic stem cells have great potential for new regenerative clinical treatments including DNA repair and complete tissue regeneration. So then, why has there been such a heated debate about whether or not embryonic stem cell research should be allowed or funded? Well, unfortunately the process of extracting stem cells from embryos results in the inevitable death of the embryo. The death of these embryos has spurred a large amount of moral controversy as many people and religious groups, who will be collectively referred to as pro-lifers throughout this paper, believe that life begins at conception and thus, destruction of a human embryo is no different from murder. However, embryonic stem cell research should not be restricted du

Reliance on Social Networks

In less than a decade, social networks have changed the dynamic of interpersonal communication - how we shop, gather our news, and get in touch with others. Many of the billion users of Facebook and million users of Twitter cannot image communicating without these tools. Social networks have become an everyday tool in our lives and have changed every aspect of it - one of the major aspects being relationships and dating. Compared to the "traditional" ways of meeting someone and having to physically interact, nowadays with social networks people can communicate and date each other without moving from their computers. Social networking has formed a comfort zone for people to express their feelings and love without the shame or embarrassment of actually getting rejected in person. The ability to interact and communicate with others face-to-face across all venues and ages is slowing withering away. "Social networks are eliminating elements of intrigue, mystery and is chang

Independence of Canada During WWI

During World War One, Canada experienced many tragedies and successes that influenced Canada to become an independence nation internally and externally. This independency helped evolve Canada towards modernization. World War One had a tremendous impact on Canada of establishing its independence. Firstly, the battle of Vimy Ridge that took place on April 9th through April 12th of 1917 brought Canada to fight together as a whole. Secondly, women were treated fairly and were given equal rights that contributed Canada politically. Lastly, the Treaty of Versailles proved that Canada had independence. The victory of Vimy Ridge is a significant event for Canada. The battle of Vimy Ridge started the progress to full independence from Britain. Vimy Ridge showed that Canada as a nation did not need to rely on Britain to assist Canada. Canada's victory over Vimy Ridge demonstrated that Canada is able to win major battles without the help of other nations. Brigadier General Alexander Ross said: "It was Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific on parade. I thought then that in those few minutes I witnessed

Greek and Hebrew Divine Revelations

The Ancient Greeks and Hebrews had completely different views of the god/gods that they served. The gods that the Greeks worshipped were scheming or treacherous which was a complete contrast of the Hebrews all-powerful and all-knowing God. The Greek's religion was very different from the Hebrew's religion because they believed in polytheism, each god had a different purpose versus the Hebrew God's omniscience, and their gods were scheming and treacherous. The Hebrews believed in monotheism, and the Greeks believed in polytheism. Monotheism is the belief in only one God. This can be found in the Bible in Deuteronomy 6:4-5 which states, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." The Hebrews believed in serving the one true God and putting him above all else. They were taught to love God with everything they had which is very different than the Greek's religion.

Literary Analysis: Women Who Worry too Much

The book I chose for my analysis is "Women Who Worry Too Much: How to Stop Worry and Anxiety from Ruining Relationships, Work and Fun," written by Holly Hazlett-Stevens with an introduction written by Michelle G. Craske. The book focuses on worry and anxiety in women within the areas of relationships, work and pleasure. Each chapter focuses on different areas of life for a woman and also explains why women are more prone to worry and anxiety as opposed to the opposite sex. It gives specific examples of how these things can affect women's lives and also provides step by step instructions to understand, cope with and deal with these two mental processes. Discussion of the Research The first research study I chose was carried out by Marianna Szabo and Peter F. Lovibond and consisted of 57 undergraduate, psychology students who were asked to keep a diary of their worrisome thoughts for a period of seven days or until they had ten worry thoughts whichever came first (Szabo & L

The Outsourcing of American Jobs

Is the outsourcing of American jobs a good or bad idea? That depends on the way you want to look at it. Outsourcing has been a big political debate for many years, and many years to come. Well what is outsourcing? Outsourcing is when a company finds labor workers overseas because of the wage gap. Workers in other countries like China, India, and the Philippines make 16x less then what Americans do. So you could see it works out well for Business owners, but what about the thousands of Americans who lose their jobs in the process? Business owners say it's good for the economy, but is this really true? Let's look at all the positives and negatives of outsourcing. Here's the tricky situation, nobody likes the idea of jobs being taken away from Americans and given to people in other countries, although if jobs were to stay in U.S soil, the prices of goods would be much more because American workers require higher wages. Bringing jobs back into the U.S may help the unemployment rate, but if goods or more expensive due to higher labor rates then companies might go out of business. If more business close then the unemployment ra

Sandy Hook School - Psychology Themes

Most people are familiar with the Newtown shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. Peter Lanza, the father of the shooter, Adam Lanza, has recently discussed his feelings and thoughts on the whole situation with the New Yorker. An article was released in USA Today about it. Many psychological themes played in to the article and what Peter Lanza had to say. The actions that Adam Lanza took that day clearly have affected him a multitude of ways and are still having impact on other peoples lives today. The shooting at Sandy Hook was one of the most tragic recent shootings. Adam Lanza was a twenty-year-old man who had been out of touch from his family for about two years. His massacre began with stopping at his mothers' house in Newtown and killing her. Then he made his way to Sandy Hook Elementary School shortly after. When he arrived there he had killed twenty students and six adult staff members. He shot all of his victims multiple times. A person is not in their right stat

The Life and Estate of Richard Teller Crane Jr.

Grandly situated on 2100 acres of seaside hills and wildlife sanctuaries the Crane Estate historically known as "Castle Hill", attaches Cape Ann's Atlantic waters to Ipswich Massachusetts. The sprawling grounds of nature trails and saltmarsh fisheries blanketing the 59-room edifice provide tourists of today with tranquil recreation while offering a historical lens into Native American culture and polarizing wealth of the industrial revolution. Formerly an expansive "Italianesque" villa erected as a summer retreat by Richard Teller Crane Jr. in 1910, the 17th-century Stuart style mansion presently occupying the grounds stands preserved to period perfection since completion in 1928. Once an influential meeting ground of former Presidents Woodrow Wilson and William Howard Taft, the greatest decisions made on the Estate today are commonly nuptials. As the courtyard and rolling hills of the "Grand Alleè" provide most-memorable picturesque backdrops, Castle Hi

The Purpose and Necessity of Unions

Image waking up everyday to the same tedious job, where the boss cuts wages and denying workers of benefits. Workers putting in the same amount of effort, but being trumped by coworkers who don't have drive because they fit the employer's preference better. Unions have a turbulent history. Some are opposed to the idea; on the other hand some are for it, unions are necessary and beneficial to workers. According to the article "American Labor Movement," the history of unions has been complicated and brutal because unions deal with people's lively hood and how well workers can support their families. During the 1800s, Unions were formed because workers were being taken advantage of and needed an outlet. In the beginning, government thought unions were criminal offenses. Whereas, farther on in the movement sometimes government supported unions and sometimes they banded against them. Furthermore, Democrats tend to support unions and Republicans tend to oppose unions. Unions were at th

Hoarding, Fire Traps and Trash

Compulsive hoarding is a mental disorder marked by an obsessive need to acquire and keep things, even if the items are worthless, hazardous, or unsanitary. More than three million people are compulsive hoarders. In this episode of "Hoarders," we look at two women, Diana and Dolores. While their personalities and reasons for hoarding are very different, both are in need of some help, so that they don't lose their homes. Diana, the grief hoarder, says she is lost in her own little world, and is comforted by all her things around her. To the viewer she comes across as a very quiet, heavyset woman that is not very happy in her home and her life. Her children have all left home and she has filled her house and her void, with food containers, used bottles, actual garbage and animal feces, where you cannot even see the floor. Her daughter Reba calls it a filthy death trap. She's not wrong. Diana's son Andrew calls the house a nightmare. Diana grew up with a severely abusive father, and then

Photograph of the Kissing Sailor

It is impossible for someone to truly understand the depth of emotion that a service member experiences coming home from a grueling war. The United States ended WWII with a victory and began the voyage home. Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Soldiers all returning home after one of the deadliest wars in hopes to see their family. Months and months of a life filled with the highest highs and lowest lows of emotions finally on the downward slope all coming to an end once the feet of these men touched American soil. This linear perspective picture taken by LIFE magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, shows us how a lifetime full of emotions can be warped up in one moment. Alfred captured the happiest moment in this young man's life to that point. At first glance one would think these two "love birds" were celebrating a long time apart

The Treatment of Native Americans

The settlement of the West nearly wiped out the bison and left Native Americans economically impoverished, psychologically demoralized, and culturally endangered. The government took Native American land for the pioneers and moved them to reservations. They also made them be more American and less Native American. As Helen Jackson says in her book, A Century of Dishonor. "The poorer, the more significant, the more helpless the band, the more certain the cruelty and outrage to which they have been subjected." The Government and the Pioneers took everything from the Native Americans and left them with nothing. Chief Joseph say in his address, An Indian's View of Indian Affairs. "If I can no go to my own home, let me have a home in some country where my people will not die so fast." The Gover

Roles of Woman in the Caribbean Resistance

Often when the history of slavery is studied, the argument is over whose history is being implemented. As a result of men having more access to educational opportunities pre and post emancipation, many historical events and tragedies such as slavery has often been viewed from a male's perspective. This can institute some inaccuracies during the timeline of slavery such as the involvement and participation of free and enslaved women during resistance in The Caribbean. Originally, for many years, most historians often viewed female slaves as 'submissive beings' who rarely participated in large scale organized rebellions and only committed what some historian coined as 'passive resistance' which was considered as nonviolent acts towards the planters. As a result of this, female slave's participation in resistance has often been considered as non effective compared to that of male slave's involvement. It is because of this one dimensional view of what historians branded as resi

Connecting Technology and Community

About 90% of Americans now own a cell phone, computer, MP3 player, game console, e-book reader or tablet computer(0). With this many Americans owning a piece of technology, it has placed a tremendous impact on how all people live together within a community. The advanced technology that exist today eliminates having to read a newspaper to know what is going on in the outside community. The increased popularity of social media websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, have also made it easier to find out about the private life of not only the people in your community, but connects people worldwide as well. Because of this a person can look up someone and find out everything about them without speaking a word. With the rise of technology, there are no boundaries between communities and people. With so many advances in technology less and less people go outside and actually experience the community they live in. Technology allows people to feel that they can be in another community and th

Enforcing the No Child Left Behind Act

"This is hard. Mrs. Smith, I do not understand this," says the fifth grader as he looks confused at the paper that lay in front of him. It may be hard to understand, but this is the sound that many teachers and even parents are hearing more often today. It is due to the "No Child Left Behind Act", which, contrary to its name, is leaving more children behind [Bla14][Moe14]. Due to this fact, the act should be thrown out. The act was brought about by the Bush administration and has since been a failure to many students nationwide, especially those who learn a little slower than other[Web12]. Through the years the results of the NCLB Act came back that children in the United States a 50/50 chance of learning and succeeding, however, soon those chances began to dwindle and the success of our children hung in the balance [Moe14]. Now, America as great nation is struggling to educate its future leaders and a greater alternative must be given. The NCLB act creates stressf

Basic Leadership Questions

1.Did your supervisor meet any of the characteristics of a charismatic leader as defined and discussed in the background readings? In today's fast changing world, a charismatic leadership style is common (and often effective) in American workplaces. The charismatic leaders have a special charm or appearance through which they attract or get the admiration of their followers. Yes my supervisor under whom I have worked for 1 year got all the characteristics of a charismatic leader. The supervisor showed a great concern for his team members and he was always looking after his team requirements and needs. He treated his team as a family who won the trust of his team by caring them a lot. He creates a very comfortable, healthy and friendly environment where I and the team members feel free in discussing the issues, participating in the decision making process. The supervisor is a great listener and makes us feel comfortable while discussing the problems with him. My supervisor is a highly

Catholicism and Christianity

"Catholicism is a denomination, and is, therefore, a subset of Christianity. All Catholics are Christians, but not all Christians are Catholics" (Catholicism vs Christianity, 2015). The world has more than a billion Catholics and with the ever growing religion, it will only get larger in number. To be a Catholic means to have complete faith in God and his divine grace. Having God's divine grace means to obey it and keep it holy as it was created by God and given to his people. The religion itself is based on this and the people take it very seriously. Catholics believe that all people are of good nature but when one commits a sin it not only hurts that one person but the people and the Church. Catholics are a Christian sect and believe in one God. Like other Christians, they believe that Jesus is God's Son which goes hand-in-hand with the belief in the Holy Trinity. God the Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit are what makes up the Holy Trinity. The Catholics basic beliefs

Brutus in Julius Caesar

Brutus is an ambivalent protagonist in William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar." He is noble, but rigid. He is the only one who doesn't hate Caesar, but he is responsible for Caesar's murder. He murders Caesar because he wants to protect the people of Rome. Brutus is very objective. At first, Cassius instigated him to join their group to kill Caesar, but he believes Caesar is a great leader that could build a better country, so he refused. Later on, when he feels Caesar will take over the country, he decided to kill Caesar. Brutus said, "I know no personal cause to spurn at him, but for the general. He would be crowned: how that might change his nature, there's the question. " (2, 1, 11~14) he is afraid that Caesar will be a dictator after Caesar is crowned. "Cr

Mulvey and Latin American Cinema

From dog-fighting in Mexico to issues of transsexuality in Cuba, contemporary Latin American cinema covers a diverse array of topics. Lauren Mulvey, British feminist film theorist, uses pyschoanaylitics to offer a feminist critique of all classical narrative cinema. She establishes that narrative cinema is viewed from the male gaze and women are coded for their "to-be-looked-at-ness". She offers that female characters add nothing or very little to actual elements of plot and character but rather are subjected to male scopophilia, the fetishistic and voyeuristic, due to phallocentricism and psychoanalytic fear of castration. She laments the way in which women in cinema are subject to male desires, being accepted or denied and objectified only by the male will, and encourages an advancement in feminist cinema. As this article was written in 1975, it is pertinent to analyze whether cinema has been able to overcome this scopophilic degradation of the female form. In an age of fem

Two Stories of Women Finding Freedom

In the 19th century, the gender role in the American society was extremely different and separate compared to the gender role nowadays. The world of male chauvinism was appreciated on that century, where men believed that the "proper sphere for a woman was the house" (Thomas). Men were able to work in factories, shops, offices, and others, while "wives, daughters and sisters were left at home all day to oversee the domestic duties that were increasingly carried out by servants" (Hughes). In other words, women were not able to do anything but to be excellent housewives for their husband. For that reason, many women have unleashed their literary skills and have written and published stories of fiction and non-fiction to support the woman's right and equality, bringing feminist literature to light. This leads you to The Story of an Hour and The Yellow Wallpaper. These are two famous short stories from different female writers that were written in the late 19th century and t

Monumental Changes in The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby, a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, chronicles the demise of a wealthy New York scammer – Jay Gatsby. The book focuses on Gatsby and his foolish attempts to get a married woman. But, two unaccounted characters are Nick Caraway and George Wilson. Fitzgerald uses these seemingly small characters to convey how an individual's can affect another individual. In The Great Gatsby, Nick is portrayed to be Gatsby's best, and only, friend. He arrives to the West Egg and lives in a humble home compared to Gatsby's lavish mansion. In the novel, Fitzgerald uses Gatsby to develop Nick Carraway as a character. Nick acknowledges in the beginning of the book that he is, "slow-thinking and full of interior rules that act as brakes on my desires" (p. 47). These "brakes" place him as an insider and outsider in multiple situations. For example, in the scene with Tom and his mistress, in his New York apartment; Nick finds himself as an insider because he is related to Tom, by way of Tom's wife Daisy. However, he restricts himself as an outsider, by not fully participating in the festivities of the shamelessly wealthy, and the class-blu

How to Compose Music on a Computer

These days while walking on the street, we see that lots of people are on their earphones listening to music. In the last 100 years or so, the number of the people who enjoy music has tremendously increased. Because of this, composing music is no longer the exclusive task of musicians but that of anyone who loves music. Amateur musicians blessed with the facilities of civilization can compose their own music conveniently and easily with only a few instruments. And equipment such as a computer, music creation software, an audio interface, a studio monitor, and a MIDI controller enable ordinary people to produce their own songs with the same quality as those sold on iTunes. What kinds of programs allow composer to produce music on computer easily, and effectively? When people compose or produce music on their computers for the first time, they are usually overwhelmed by the numerous functions and sounds available to them by their music creation software. Because of these excessive opti
