Track and Field - Discourse Community Essay

Joining a discourse community is something we've all experienced, whether it's a specific sports team that you participate in/watch, or an online community like twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest. In our class we have talked about how to join a community of discourse using the three appeals: Ethos (credibility/trust), Pathos (emotions/values), and Logos (Logic/reason/proof). In this paper I will show how I gained the trust of my teammates, learned the different facts, information and skills to run, and also appealed to my teammates emotions, in order to be accepting onto my high school track team and also UTA's track and field team. I'll explain how running on the track team gave me all the opportunities and goals I have now, to help me be successful in the future. Deciding to join the track and field team my senior year was a new and exciting experience for me, although I didn't have any idea about how to run track, I was confident that I made the right decision to run for the team. Conflict Management Goals

A team exists whenever two or more people work together to accomplish a task or achieve a common goal. The potential for synergy results from the impact the team members have upon each other and the work they do. Because of this impact and the goals they hold in common, team members recognize they are dependent upon each other and accountable to each other. Working with others can be an enjoyable, and transforming, experience. Consciously or unconsciously, there are many things that a team does to develop sense of collective cohesion and commitment we call teamwork. Although there are still many jobs in firms today that can be handled more effectively by one person, a basic aspect of organizational life is that fewer work assignments are fully performed by one individual alone. Indeed, teams are increasingly being employed in every type of organization in every industry, from restaurants and traditional manufacturing environments to service oriented and high-technology companies. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC)

Introduction The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is the sole body granted the power to mandate legitimate military actions, which was founded in 1945 after the Second World War in an attempt to maintain peace and security in the world. It largely displays the United Nations (UN) collective security system, based on belief that a representative council with a limited membership will result in democracy and efficiency. However, in the recent years, actions taken by the Council (in Iraq, Syria, Libya, etc.) are far from satisfactory (Kuperman, 2011; Mohamed, 2013), which has aroused discussion on the UNSC reform (Bourantonis, 2005). This essay will first discuss the necessity of the reform, analyze some proposed plans, and explain why they are unpractical. Finally, it will offer some suggestions to argue that the reform without charging the current structure of the UNSC is methodologically available as well as practically viable. What is the necessity of the UNSC reform? Before l

The Oldsmobile Toronado

It was an engineering feat for Oldsmobile; it's a vehicle with true power and beauty, which no other car can compare. Based off the Riviera, it took off in 1966 taking the Car Of The Year Award right out of the hands of all the other competitors. Master engineering from the best of what GM had to offer, twelve years in the making. Front wheel drive, and very luxurious. Throw it all together and you get a Toronado. The Oldsmobile Toronado was, and still is an amazing car. The Toronado got Motor Trend's car of the year award in 1966. They said "We feel pleasure and pride in presenting the 1966 car of the year award to Oldsmobile division of General Motors for its Toronado. We say pride as well as pleasure, because never in the 14 year history of this award has the choice been so obvious and unanimous. The Toronado is symbolic of resurgence of imaginative engineering and tasteful styling in the U.S. auto industry" (Motor Trend Magazine 1966). Motor Trend was amazed at the perfect mix betw

Georges Braque and Cubism

The idea of simultaneity, geometricity, and passage being integrated into art started just before the 20th century. This style of art was, however, just an idea and didn't become an art form until the early 20th century, in which it came to be known as Cubism. Cubism was the first type of abstract art, in that it dealt with making a sort of illusion by distorting perception and trying to present an image in an unrealistic way. Cubism tried breaking the shackles of seeing things from one viewpoint. All artwork from times before had created an image that portrayed a single three dimensional view of something, as the human eye would see. However, cubism examined the fourth dimension by making a fragmented image of a single object and piecing it together by making a collage of varying viewpoints, unlike how the human eye would see. This put emphasis on differentiating paintings from

Learning Styles in Educational Psychology

In the process of my late educational endeavor here at Ashford University as well as my ongoing and life-long job of first and fore-most being a mother, I've had the pleasure of raising and still raising three wonderful children. My oldest child is 22 years old at this time, athletic, a hands-on learner, struggled in his academic education in high school and his first year of college, however, learned the most important things in life through his own ways. My next son, academically smart and loved sports, though didn't have the motivation to give it his all; he chose the bare minimum of both to get through his high school years, and through his first year of college. He continues to do so at his own pace and his own volition. And lastly we have my daughter, who I firmly believe is a combination of both my sons in that she is passionate about learning, academically smart, and her love of sports. It wasn't until I began this journey did I begin to understand the differences and simil

Personal, National and International Heroes

As humans, we depend on any kind of superior existence to confide in, to place all of our hopes and faiths into. Heroes, whether it be a personal, national or an international one, offer that kind of reassurance. However, what is consistent with each of these heroes? What is the correlation? By analyzing the characteristics of heroes on a popular, political and personal scale, it will be shown that what all heroes provide is a sense of security for all to take comfort in. For the same reason children dress up as their favorite superheroes and dash across the house, for the same reason adults rally behind masked icons, both Spiderman and the Batman are evident that people young and old need a figure to confide in. Merely the heroes' existence secures the citizens of their respective cities' well-being and more importantly, provides them the idea that they are just as able. For example, in a scene from Spiderman 2 (Film), our protagonist fights the infamous Doctor Octopus (also simply

Great Gatsby - Illusion of the American Dream

John Cougar Mellencamp is an extremely famous and rich all-American singer who grew up in a small town; surely he achieved the American Dream. Mellencamp sang in the song "Small Town" (released in 1985), "No I cannot forget where it is I come from." Mellencamp expresses that even though he has a lot of money, he can't change who he is or where he is from, and deep down he is still a small town guy. The debatable illusion of the ability to be whoever you want, regardless of race, background, wealth, or any other distinguishable feature is known as the great American Dream. It is the idea that anybody from anywhere can become anyone. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published in 1925. The book illustrates the American Dream when the narrator, Nick Carraway from the middle class, moves to New York City to be successful in the bond business. He lived next to Gatsby, a man who started with next to nothing in the Midwest, but grew to be extremely wealthy to imp

Hobbes' Argument for a Sovereign State

Thomas Hobbes is recognized to be a great advocate of absolute authority within a state. The essay that follows will illuminate Hobbs' reasons (premises) for the elimination of distributed authority in his political philosophy as in The Leviathan. Hobbes argues that an ailing commonwealth has many subsidizing factors. One of which would naturally be if the sovereign does not enjoy ultimate power over his public. Hobbs articulates his concern that this may lead to social disorder. Furthermore, he understands that revolting is dispatched to the kin of the people and equates it to an illness or a birth defect. Alternatively, individuals should be prohibited to assess, for themselves, what deeds are good or evil. Hobbes suggests that civil law should dictate what actions are conventional and force these rules upon the masses. When the populaces deliberate and then disregard the commonwealth the system will tumble. The commonwealth, tainted by yet another illness, could not operate when entities consider their integ

Waiting for Godot - Samuel Beckett

The meaning of human life is a question that has remained unanswered. Without knowing where to begin, it is impossible to find the answer. Existence is imposed upon humans by an unknown force. There is no clear meaning to it, therefore using fabricated purposes and patterns as a distraction is an imposition to avoid suffering from not knowing. Samuel Beckett, author of Waiting for Godot, explores chance and the human behavior when faced with the questioning of their existence. The doubt of meaning behind human life drives people to rely on outside forces which may or may not be real in order to maintain order and direction. Through biblical allusion, symbol, and a motif, Beckett shows that when the actions of one day have no significance on the following days, time loses its meaning which also proves that a human's life is meaningless and is ultimately based upon chance. The basic argument that Samuel Beckett is trying to make in the play is that chance forms the basis of existence, t

Loss of Innocence in To Kill a Mockingbird

"To Kill A Mockingbird", by Harper Lee is an invigorating novel published in 1960. It was immediately successful, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and since has become a classic of American literature. The novel takes place in the setting of Maycomb County, an imaginary district in Southern Alabama. The time period is in the early 1930s during the years of the Great Depression when poverty and unemployment were widespread in the United States. The narrator of the story is Scout, a young girl who is reminiscing on her past from the age of six to the age of ten by the end of the novel. In "To Kill A Mockingbird," by Harper Lee, coming of age and the loss of childhood innocence is an important theme that author Harper Lee develops using two characters. We begin the novel with the observations of Scout of her old run down city of Maycomb, what she describes as slow, dull, boring, and lifeless. In chapter three, Scout is ready for her first day of school with her brother J

Life and Work of Raymond Carver

A single day can completely change a person's life. Every opportunity taken brings people closer to their hidden talents, gifts with the ability to improve their reality. But, fear of the unknown often prevents people from discovering their gifts. Time makes them cynical, and their talents go unheeded. However, those who continue to chase their dreams may experience the same transformation Raymond Carver did after a single creative writing class. The unemployed twenty-year-old father of two children, with a volatile marriage and too many obligations for his age, found something that helped him escape from reality. Poetry quickly became his favorite companion. Carver, a man initially without hope, became one of the best American writers of all time, the American Chekhov. Carver's works reflect many hardships he experienced during his lifetime. Using his powerful tools, short sentences and sparse dialogues, he depicts his problems with alcohol, poverty, and divorce, by writing about desp

Rhetorical Analysis - A Modest Proposal

In the seventeenth century, people made habit of distributing political pamphlets in Ireland to promote intellectual ideas. Many people threw these pamphlets away and did not pay attention to them. In 1729 Jonathan Swift, author of "A Modest Proposal," devises this proposal to show how bad and backwards the social class and general state Ireland was in. His proposal was that the infants of the desolate and poor should "contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing, of many thousands" in order to improve the standard of living and economy in Ireland (Swift). Jonathan Swift's reasoning behind this proposal is that many women were having children that they were unable to care for. He says that this proposal would make the infants, "beneficial to the public" (Swift). This proposal also addresses the horrible conditions in which the people were living in at the time. Swift blames the politicians for the deplorable conditions due to the lack of apathy

My Ideas for Classroom Management

I've always wanted to become a teacher ever since I was a little girl. I want to fulfill a teaching profession simply because I love children. I feel as if teaching is like being a parent, but with boundaries. For eight hours a day I will be in a classroom teaching, motivating, and protecting my class from any harm coming. I want to become a teacher that my students will remember for a very long time. My plan is to guide them to bigger and better things; I want the children to know that no matter how hard something may be, they can do it. I believe that hands-on learning, experimenting, and critical thinking are important within a classroom. Students should not only learn through text, but also through hands-on learning. I believe that this strategy is a lot more effective, especially within an elementary school setting. Critical thinking and experimenting go hand-in-hand with hands-on learning. This strategy allows students to work with their brain and challenge his or her skills. W

Englishmen Transplanted by Clarence Lester Ver Steeg

In the article, "Englishmen Transplanted," the author talks about the transition of the settlers from Englishmen to Americans. Clarence Lester Ver Steeg mentions in the article various dissimilarities between the Old World and the New World. The pattern change was immediate when it came to the cultivation of crops and animal husbandry. Animal husbandry is the management and care of farm animals by humans for profit, in which genetic qualities and behavior considered to be advantageous to humans. The types of government between the colonies and America were quite different also. Compared to the new world, in England land was scarce, labor was abundant, and capital was available. These factors were reversed in the new world. In the New World, no money could be spared to invest in tools or equipment, labor was dear, but land was abundant. Hence, land was exploited to save scarce capital and labor. Fundamental conditions made exploitation an American characteristic. In England, the

Fatherly Respect in Huckleberry Finn

In the great American novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," by Mark Twain, Pap is Huck's biological father. However, there is evidence found in various scenes showing that in reality, Jim is more of a father figure to Huck than is any other character in the book. Respect from Huck is shown for Jim, unparalleled to the other people Huck meets, right in the first few pages, and the feeling strengthens and becomes mutual as the novel progresses on. "Tom whispered to me, and wanted to tie Jim to the tree for fun. But I said no" (Twain 5). One can note while reading the novel that although Huck meets many characters during his journey, none of the characters, besides Jim, develop a close enough connection with Huck to even be up for consideration as a father figure in his life. Even though the Widow Douglas has adopted Huck, and other characters such as the Judge have good intentions for Huck, like one another they all end up being too involved in their own personal affairs to be there for Huck when he needs them. Similarly, the duke and the king, despite

The Orchid Thief - Self-Worth and Immortality

A true story of beauty and obsession, "The Orchid Thief," by Susan Orlean, weaves an intriguing tale of power, passion, and the search for fulfillment. The fixation that sparks fire in the hearts of so many people is the orchid. We see that interestingly enough, there's a commonality among the orchid lovers: their desire to be extraordinary and unique. As the story progresses it's evident that this intense passion is not driven by the simplistically intricate flower, but by much more selfish motives. The main focus and inspiration for this story is Mr. John Laroche; a man that "strikes many people as eccentric" but has always "been exceptionally passionate and driven" (3). Like so many other passionate people, when Laroche is interested in something, he puts his whole heart and soul into it. However, Laroche sometimes goes a tad bit overboard and his latest escapades are the very thing that intrigued Orlean enough to base almost an entire book off of him. His pass

Overview of State Abortion Laws

Abortion has always been a topic of discussion in the United States. It is something that has been fought over in government for years, especially very recently. Abortion is defined as, "the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy." Some think that abortion is a woman's right to choose and that she and she alone can decide if it is something with which she wants to go through. Others think that abortion is morally wrong and in turn is the killing of a helpless "being." Those who are on the pro-life agenda will typically use the terms "unborn child" or "unborn baby." This is because they believe that life begins at conception. Those who advocate the pro-choice agenda will use the term "fetus," as they believe life begins at birth. The only time abortions cannot be performed is after the 24 weeks. Late term abortions are not legal in most states in the United States, except in cases where the life of the mother is

Google and the Driverless Car

Introduction Since the early 1930's, the evolution of computer technology has come a long way. The past 70 years have been an amazing leap towards the technologic world we live in and will vastly continue to grow. In today's world, we have electronic devices that can be connected to other devices and networks such as WIFI, Bluetooth, 3 and 4g networks, which are commonly known as smart devices. Google is taking the next big leap forward with something that will change the world forever. It is an invention that might be their most innovative product yet, the Google driverless (smart) car. The autonomous car has always been an aspiration for technologic world. The idea of an autonomous car being science fiction is no more. "Google first announced its driverless car division in 2010, and has been testing its technology in modified cars built by other manufacturers."(Miller) When this technology is in full production around the world, it will impact our daily lives like never be

Tangerine by Edward Bloor

In the novel, "Tangerine," Paul's life is not entirely his own. Others have made many of the major decisions concerning his life. Choices have affected Paul all his life. Most of the major events in his life have been instigated by someone else's choices. Out of love, his parents have made choices to not only protect Paul but to keep him shielded from decision-making knowledge of events, and subject that they didn't want him to be exposed to. While his parents may have thought their decisions were more positive than negative they showed their lack of faith in Paul. They were shielding him from adult information and decisions. They were ultimately limiting his ability to grow-up. Mom made the first choice. She chose to fill out and IEP form for Paul like the author Bloor shows here, "Mrs. Fisher, I'd like to get you to fill out and IEP for Paul" (27). The choice is made because Paul's mom thinks it is important for the schoo

The Oblogation of Tedious School Work

Although I'm aware that school is deemed necessary for success, I find the process of attending classes and tackling large amounts of homework to be tedious. I've never had a true care for what some people seem to love. However, my lack of interest is obliterated due to the fact that I am a student athlete. In order to not only play but continue my education I am forced to attend and do well in school. As sad as it may seem. basketball is the only motivation I have to fight through the annoyance of homework, other students, and teachers. Is homework truly essential? I've asked myself this question over a million times throughout my educational career. The simple thought of knowing homework even exists makes me nauseous Homework is waste of time and trees. My major pet peeve towards this subject is that I feel homework is assigned as busy work. Some teachers assign homework that won't even be graded, so why assign it? It's almost as if teachers today want to punish

The Rules of Baseball

Baseball is a game played between two teams of nine on a field with a diamond-shaped circuit of four bases. Many people think that baseball is an easy sport, but in reality, it's one of the most difficult to master. A baseball, 9-9 ¼ inches in diameter, coming at 90 miles per hour gives the hitter 0.46 seconds to decide whether or not he should swing at it. Once he makes that decision, the batter then must square up the ball with a bat that has a barrel 2 ¾ inches in diameter. In the game of baseball, there's certain things that you might never see on the diamond. As a player you must build good relationships with your teammates and coaches, deal with many different pressure situations, and have the best endurance physically and mentally. Growing up, you build good relationships with people that have similar characteristics as yourself and you consider them your best friends. Well, the game of baseball will make you have a ton of best friends because everyone on the team shares a c

Argumentative Essay - Prescription Drug Expense

Pharmaceutical drug companies are making an extreme amount of money off their products, to the detriment of many Americans who are unable to afford them. At the same time making an inflated amount of profit from every consumer who need the products for various reasons, even though they may have better means to pay for them. Through this paper I will discuss my reasons for my thoughts on this, based on some facts I have compiled. These will include the government involvement from our capitalistic society, the amount of dollars spent as an expense of total health care and by sharing the amount of profits drug companies are receiving. The rebuttal from the drug companies will be that the research and development process is long and very expensive. In addition scientists on these projects make a substantial amount of money during this time frame, which rises during it. These companies list safety as one main concern, trying to limit side effects and the unknown of how a new drug will perfo
