Hardin's Sinking Lifeboat Ethics

In Garrett Hardin's essay, Lifeboat Ethics: The Case Against Helping the Poor, Hardin describes the wealthy population of the world as being in a single lifeboat that is almost filled until buckling while the poor population of the world treads water below. Hardin's essay gets his readers to feel the natural instinct to survive. The lifeboat metaphor that Hardin uses relieves the wealthy population of their moral obligations to the less fortunate, but in addition, puts all of the blame and cause of the depletion of earth's resources on the poor. As much as his argument may make sense, there are some flaws in his way of thinking. Alan Durning, who noticed that major flaws with Hardin's essay, wrote on what he thought about the topic that Hardin has brought to his attention. In Durning's essay, "Asking How Much Is Enough," he argues that it is not overpopulation that is depleting the earth's resources, but overconsumption of the resources by the wealthy population. The arguments in Durni

Victorian Society in A Doll's House

Choose two of the following (status and wealth) and show how the author of a prescribed text explores the idea that both elements influence people's lives. Set in 19th century Victorian era Norway, Henrik Ibsen's tri-partite play A Doll's House explores the idea that status and wealth influence people's lives. Ibsen uses a variety of dramatic and literary techniques to demonstrate his ideas and influence the audience to take a position that views Victorian Norwegian society as limiting and does not allow women to have a voice in such a repressive community. Ibsen shows how wealth and status are considered so important by society in Norway during the Victorian era, how status can suddenly change due to a challenge of role and how wealth can give power for one individual over another. Ibsen conveys that wealth can give power over others and their own decisions. He achieves this through suggesting to the audience that those that do not have wealth are forced into more uncomfortable sit

The Message of the Torah

The first five books of the Old Testament written by Moses, (the five chapters of the Torah), are collectively one book called the Torah. Some argue that the Torah is law written for man to follow, while others argue that the Torah is meant to be hope of man's return to God's grace, via a Messiah from the seed of Abraham and David. In the book of Genesis, man fell from God's grace by defying the rules God set forth for man to abide by. In punishment of this act, God exiled man from the Garden of Eden. Man continued to sin against God and was pushed farther from God as many years passed. The message of the Torah is that God has provided man with everything he needs to obey God's laws, be sinless so that man may return to God, and the promise of a messiah to redeem our sins for us. God provided man with a beautiful Garden to live in, but sent man from it when he sinned against God. Man was not content with accepting and obeying God's instructions, and defied the only instructions that

Children Learning a Foreign Language

A language is a powerful mechanism that consists of sounds and symbols to communicate with other people. Knowing more than one language can open many opportunities and benefits for us. The best time to learn a foreign language is when we are young. Children should begin learning a foreign language as soon as they start school because it can stimulate them to broaden their knowledge of the world. Children should learn a foreign language as soon as they start school because bilingualism develops mental abilities. Research shows that people who learn a second language are more creative, and they can solve problems easier than those who do not (Bhattacharjee, 2012). Moreover, according to Suing Yang, Ph.D. '"Bilingualism in young children strengthens what is known as executive attention, which helps orient individuals in the sea of information coming in"' (Booker, 2011). Children have a greater predisposition for learning a foreign language, and they can better assimilate

The Artificial Intelligence Debate

Artificial Intelligence has been debated since the term's inception. For some researchers it is important that the definition of Artificial Intelligence include only those techniques that actually reflect human cognitive processes. For others, the definition factor is that Artificial techniques are able to solve problems that would require intelligence if solved by humans, irrespective of whether the techniques employed reflect human cognition. It has also been suggested that for a definition of Artificial Intelligence to be applicable, the most important criterion is that the system can adapt to or learn from its environment ("Artificial Intelligence"). Artificial Intelligence is claimed by many to be either good or bad, but the future outcome of Artificial Intelligence will depend largely on how it is used. Work and studies in regard to and relation to Artificial Intelligence have sparked a number of opinions in the public's eyes. There are those who say that these small Ar

Hydrogen Bonding as Essential for Life

Life on earth would not exist without the many bonds observed throughout Biochemistry. There is two types of force the intramolecular force which exist between the atoms in a molecule such as Covalent, Ionic and Metallic bonding, the second force being intermolecular force that exist between neighboring molecules such a Hydrogen bonding, dispersion forces and dipole-dipole bonds. Hydrogen bonding being a weak chemical bond is one of the most important bonds present in essential biological molecule. Nearly all molecules have London dispersion forces, Hydrogen Bonds Fig. 1 form between molecules consisting of dispersion forces and Dipole-dipole bond. Hydrogen bond is the forces of attraction between a Nitrogen, Oxygen or Fluorine atom of another molecule and the hydrogen atom attached in the molecule. Nitrogen, Oxygen or Fluorine are heteroatoms suggested by Alan R. Katritzky, ‎Otto Meth-Cohn, ‎Thomas L. Gilchrist – (1995) which means that electronegativity of Nitrogen, Oxygen

Using Corn as a Sugar Substitute

Here's something to think about: what if I told you that if we imported more sugar into this country, we would pay less when we go out to eat at a restaurant? Here's another one: what if I told you that adding more sugar to your diet would be a good thing? Finally, imagine that sugar could lower the price of gasoline; wouldn't that be nice? I know this sounds crazy, but for a moment, imagine that it's possible. As unlikely as it sounds, it could all happen in the next five years, or less, if the United States simply decides to make it happen. And what needs to happen is that the United States needs to end its long standing restrictions on imported sugar. So what exactly are sugar restrictions and how do they work? The U.S. Sugar Program, or tariff-rate quotas (TRQs), are combinations of quotas (limits) and tariffs (taxes) placed on imported sugar. When the amount of imported sugar exceeds the TRQ, the prices rise to around 150% of the sugar's cost. "On average, Americans pay 3 t

How Guitars Work

To properly understand the principles of how a guitar works, it is essential to understand the functions of sound waves and electromagnets. They play a key role in the function of the guitar, both in the acoustic and the electric.  Sound Waves  For us to hear, we need ears with an important piece, the eardrum. We hear sound because when a sound is created, there is a change in air pressure. Because of this change in pressure, waves are produced, flying all over the place. On the guitar, when the string vibrates, the change in air pressure causes the air particles to move around. There are air particles all around us, so when the sound wave crashes into these particles, they all collide until they reach our eardrums. When the air particles crash into our eardrum, they will hit against all the other components of the ear and the sound will enter our brain.  Electromagnets  Electromagnets need a source of energy (a battery, power outlet, etc.) In the electric guitar (because in the

Gibert Ryle and Rene Descartes' Dualism

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to layout the primary tenets of the much debated mind/body dualistic argument from the lens of philosophers from the ancient epoch but most elaborately from Rene Descartes. The most critical account of the mind-body theory was first systematically carried out by Descartes. To him, mind and body does not only exist, they are distinct and they causally interact at the pineal gland. Through his notion of clear and distinct ideas, Descartes infers the existence of the mind as a thinking substance and the body as an extended substance; hence the two are independent and distinct. This distinction has therefore attracted a lot of attacks. The paper will discuss in broad spectrum, Gibert Ryle most sensational attack on Descartes' mind/body distinction and how he accused Descartes of making a categorical mistake. Response to Ryle's attack on Cartesian dualism will also be given a literary consideration in the paper while the paper will be consummated on a subj

They Called Them Greasers by Arnoldo De Leon

The cultural climate of Texas in the 1800s contained a generalized distaste for diverse peoples, and racist attitudes and actions were exceedingly prevalent. In the novel, "They Called Them Greasers," Arnoldo De Leon forcefully illustrates the segregation and ferocious treatment of Mexican Americans by Anglo-Americans during the nineteenth century. This xenophobic treatment of Mexican Americans was not only violent in regard to the Anglos internal feelings, but also in their actions. De Leon examines the perspectives held by the whites, the roots of these insolences, and the expression, as well as the implications, of these prejudiced attitudes. De Leon establishes, primarily through the use of historical newspapers and magazines, the perspectives held by the whites in respect to Tejanos, during the nineteenth century. He suggests that although capitalist exploitation and colonial expansion were root causes of the prejudice towards Mexican Americans, their cultural background played a significant role. Upon their arrival to Texas, during their journey toward westward expansion, Anglo-Americans, as cultural heirs to Queen

The Gay Wage Gap

Socioeconomic status (SES) is often measured as a combination of education, income, and occupation. It is commonly conceptualized as the social standing or class of an individual or group of individuals. When analyzed, one must view the various social classes that make up civilization through the lenses of privilege, power, and control. Furthermore, a thorough examination of SES reveals many inequities that are currently being faced. SES is relevant to many areas including of behavioral and social science, including research, practice, education, and advocacy (APA). The most visible socioeconomic inequity, and the basis of this paper, is the evident disparity amongst the wages of specific social groups including: gays, lesbians, heterosexual men and women. Internally, we are all humans with the same 46 chromosomes and potential for success, but externally, wages segregate these groups, and multiple studies validate that fact. In a recent study conducted in Australia by researcher Matt

Chimamanda Adichie: The Danger of a Single Story

Did you know that you are a writer? Yes, You! I say this because every day is a new page to start fresh. I'm sure we've, more than likely, heard the term: "let your imagination run wild. Well, each day is like a blank canvas and your imagination is what brings it to life. So why is it that we let other people try and paint our lifestyles? By that I mean we allow others to change us. We have to show the world what we have to offer, it doesn't matter where we came from, as long as we stand out. There's over a billion people in the world, so that s over a billion stories. I remember my first time meeting my roommate, once starting college. Amongst the two of us we had stories for days to come. As time had gone by we got to learn about each other and form a friendship. She was from New York, and I was from Miami. Of course there was much to discuss, such as weather, styles and fashion, transportation, etc. We were able to mentally live in two different places in the world all becau

Summary of the Human Immune System

Scientific understanding of infectious diseases and different types of pathogens, has never been so extensive in the entire era of human beings. We have not only been able to identify different types of pathogens, but our body's defense mechanisms against them. The immune system has been thoroughly explored by scientists and they have been able to identify its ingenuous defense mechanisms to protect our body from these virulent pathogens. Scientists have identified two different types of defensive responses due to the entry and establishment of a pathogen inside our bodies. They have divided the responses into nonspecific responses and specific responses. Our bodies contain three lines of defenses. The first line of defense is the epithelial tracts, the second line of defense is nonspecific responses (Innate Immune System), and the third line of defense is specific responses (Adaptive Immune System). I am going to focus on how nonspecific responses can influence a pathogens' entry an

Metaphors in Last Night at the Lobster

Stewart O'Nan's, "Last Night at the Lobster," tells the story of a wretched man named Manny DeLeon. Manny's current situation isn't pleasing. He gets relegated from his position at the Red Lobster as a general manager to an assistant manager at a nearby Olive Garden because his New Britain branch is being shut down. His problems don't end there. His grandmother who had raised him passes away and the waitress he once fell in love with is leaving after she ended their fleeting affair. At home his troubles worsen, his pregnant girlfriend is soon giving birth to their child. Manny can be described as an optimistic man. Though he faces many challenges in life, he is copes with them and prepares his beloved restaurant for it's final day of service. Many of Manny's staff had been let go of, so he has to comprise and work with what he has so he can close the restaurant he has worked in for years in a respectful manner. Manny's character can be described as determined and vigorous. I think it'

My Experience with Exercise

What does it meant to be a healthy? Some may define being healthy as eating right, taking daily vitamins, and getting enough sleep. I personally define being healthy as living a stress-free life and exercising, as well as eating right, taking daily vitamins, and getting enough sleep. Everybody has stress, and ways of relieving it whether it's counting to ten, talking to someone, or even just listening to music. Relieving stress is something that I wasn't very good at until a little over a year ago, when I found that exercise worked perfectly for me. Over the past year, exercising daily has led me to change the way I perceive myself emotionally, physically, and mentally. Exercising helps me emotionally because it allows me to get everything off of my chest at the end of the day. Sometimes exams, tests, or even school in general can be very stressful. With all of the stress built up inside, it can often times be very hard to concentrate on the task at hand. When I initially started working out, I was going through a breakup and it made it very easy to go out to the

Grandmother in A Good Man is Hard to Find

Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find," is a short story about a family on a vacation. Throughout the story the grandmother is vain, hypercritical and superficial, not to mention, annoying. On the vacation, after the family crosses path with the Misfit, the grandmother's personality changes dramatically, she goes from being vain to being sympathetic. The grandmother and the Misfit start to grow a connection, focusing on the fact that they both don't have anyone left on whom to lean. This connection shows the readers that maybe the grandmother has changed, although we are all very doubtful. Someone's personality comes from how they were brought up and how they have been treating people throughout their lifespan. It is difficult for someone to change as dr

Nature and Walden

A. In the first paragraph of "Nature," Emerson points out that the "modern age is retrospective. It builds upon the sepulchers of the past" (Emerson 177). Here Emerson is saying that the modern generation is looking at the world through their ancestors eyes instead of taking their own view of the world. Emerson then precedes to ask three questions which all have the same meaning: he asks why we should not look at the world through our own perspective. After asking this same question in three different ways Emerson writes "The shines to-day also" (Emerson 177). By writing this Emerson is answering his question. He is saying that there is no reason for the modern generation to not use an original modern perspective when looking at the world. This sentence transitions the essay from rhetorical questioning to asserting the argument. Emerson then proceeds to argue his point that modern people can have their own perspective by saying "There is more wool and flax in

Entertainment Control Systems - Pyrotechnics

I. Discovery Video There was a lot to learn from this short video on pyrotechnics. There is a village behind every pyro effect. It is not only the person triggering the effects, but manufacturers, technicians and designers are also involved. Products are handmade and require precise measurements. Pyrotechnics require a tremendous amount of safety precautions such as grounded floors and special suits to prevent sparks from igniting materials. Pyrotechnic companies have certain things to think about before using these dangerous devices on a show. -Budget -Control Systems -Crew -What kind of costumes/materials are being used? Are they flammable? -Temperatures can can be very high These items are well thought out months in advance to allow for lots of testing and to make sure the client can get what they want done safely. Pyro can be made with fuel and an oxidizer in a shell. Powder previously hand mixed is measured and then pressed into little tubes which then are placed into a s

Social Movements and Politics

The second half of the 20th century saw an abundance of social and political change that had not been seen in western society before which had been caused by social movements. In this essay I will explain why this change has happened and continues to happen, why it is influenced by society and most importantly the impact it has had on politics and society as a whole. Since the 1960's there has been a notable increase in the level of political participation of general populations across the world an example being the civil rights movement in the US and many feminist movements that were active at the time. Many sociologists have inferred that this is not a coincidence in itself and instead is due to the formation of a growing 'movement society' or an increase in social movements. This is significant as there is a historical, political and cultural motive for the formation of this movement culture which continues to this day. (Della Porta, 2006:2) Neil Smelser (1962), a sociologist

Short Story - Roxi and the Wave

It was a dark and stormy night in April of 2054. Things were going fine in the little town of Chataqua until I woke up in the middle of my slumber to see a dark blue mass coming toward my home. I jumped out of bed to war the others, but they had already spotted it. After about ten grew long minutes of mysteriously waiting to discover what this "thing" was, we came to the conclusion it was a wave. Something that would wipe out the entire platform. We though it was the end. We were very wrong. 'Twas only the beginning. I am James, and I'm here to tell you about my experiences. The night of April 14, 2054 was devastating and something I would never forget. Along with the rest of us. I lived with 12 other people on a platform like structure. It had a singular building that would hold us all. It was created by the government to protect us from the dangers of the streets. A mass amount of water took over the streets and towered over the tallest skyscrapers and rushed at us like a boulder rolling down a hill, slow and scary. We didn't know what to expect. So we prepared for the worst. We said out g

Film Critique - Maleficent

"Let us tell an old story anew and we will see how well you know it," says the narrator as the retelling of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent, begins. In the movie Maleficent, Maleficent, who is played by Angelina Jolie, starts out as an gorgeous winged fairy who falls for a human by the name of Stefan, who betrays her to become king by taking her most prized possession, her wings. To get revenge she curses his first born child, Aurora. He sends Aurora away to keep her safe until he can stop the curse. Maleficent watches over her as she grows, beginning to love little Aurora and decides that she wants to reverse the curse. When the day came Aurora pricked her finger and falls into a deep sleep that only true love can break, just like the original movie. In the original movie she is awakened by prince charming but in the new movie, the true love actually comes from the one that cursed her, Maleficent. This is a great Disney movie where they go outside the box and add twists and turns. I

Forensic Psychologist Personal Statement

At an early age I gained insight on how society is not always accepting to those individuals considered to be "unusual." Growing up, I was not able to understand why my uncle's behaviors were so different from other adults; however, as I got older I became knowledgeable of his mental illness. He had been diagnosed with schizophrenia paranoid type. He is a low functioning individual who refuses to take medication. The use of illegal substances assists with managing the symptoms of his diagnosis; however, it also elicits violence and promotes criminal activity. His behaviors prompted my curiosity involving serious mental illness and its effects on interactions with the legal system. I am the younger of two children born in a small remote town known as Mineral, Virginia. At the age of thirteen, my mother; who was my inspiration, my mentor, and my motivator, suddenly was diagnosed with Leukemia. My older sister was preparing to leave the home to begin her life as a

Comparison of Two Environmental Writers

In A letter to President Pierce, Chief Seattle is explaining why and how the white men do not understand the red men and how the red men do not understand the white men. He discusses how the value of the land is different for the two races; this is his main point. The Indians see the land as sacred and prosperous, and that it has to be cherished in order to be inhabited. The white men see the land as being the same wherever they go, property, that they think they can take from wherever or whomever they like, drain it of its value, and then leave. The next point he discussed is how the two styles of living are different from one another. The Indian lifestyle is a peaceful one. They live in harmony with everything around them. On the other hand, the white men lives a very loud and busy lifestyle. They live only to benefit themselves. One of the underlying points is that the Indians do not understand why the white men are intruding on their land. They do not know why the white men are tak

Globalization, Tourism and Indigenous Peoples

Globalization is essentially a process by which an ever tightening network of ties that cut across national political boundaries connects communities in a single, interdependent whole, a shrinking world where local differences are steadily eroded and subsumed within a massive global social order (Mowforth and Munt, 1998: 12). The globalization definition given makes tourism the cause and effect of globalization. Tourism can be argued to be one of the world's largest industries that continues to develop rapidly. Tourism is generally involves travel for recreation, leisure, religious, family or business purposes, usually for a limited duration. Tourism is commonly associated with international travel, but may also refer to travel to another place within the same country. In sociological perspective, "tourism consists of the of phenomena of space movement connected with voluntarily temporal change of place in space, change of life rhythm and environment accompanied by making persona

The Men Behind the Declaration of Independence

The Men Behind the Declaration of Independence The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America was singed by the second Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 4th, 1776. This document stated that they original 13 colonies of the United States were now independent states and would no longer be ruled by Great Britain. There were three men that are mainly responsible for its creation. These men were Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin. Each of these three men were founding fathers of the United States of America and instrumental in its creation. Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 on the Shadwell plantation just outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. He was born into one of Virginia's most prominent families that were part of Virginia's planter elite (Jefferson, 2013). The planter elite was considered the highest class of people in the South at the time and controlled almost 90% of all the land. Jefferson stated
