American Suburbs in The Swimmer

John Cheever's, "The Swimmer," is a short story that is highly praised for its blend of realism and surrealism. Cheever conducts a thematic exploration of suburban America and focuses on the relationship between wealth and happiness. The central theme of the story is a life that focuses on material successes and social standing results in temporary happiness. Cheever presents the story in a third-person point of view with a narrator who reveals the thoughts of the main character, Neddy Merrill, during his journey home through his neighbour's swimming pools. The reader observes the lack of genuine relationships formed by Neddy, his changing life circumstances over time, and the repetitive use of alcohol throughout his journey which shows that once the sunny facade of wealth is stripped away, Neddy is left an empty man. Neddy acts as though he lives a happy and full life, but the reader begins to realize as his journey progresses that he is empty and isolated due to the lack o

Ethnography Class Review

Ethnography is a subject that is filled with full of interesting information and variety of history from all around the globe. It is a subject that teaches us what happens in reality such as behaviors of individuals, comparing and contrasting from this topic and such and etc. Ethnography is part of our lives without even realizing it and noticing it because it involves observation, interacting with people, asking questions to your target group and etc. Throughout the 12 weeks of semester, we had discussed so many different issues that happened and also that is happening in society now. We had done projects for our class as an entry level of Ethnographer, such doing observation, interviewing with people to get a story out of them in person and etc. Not only we had done this but also throughout the semester, we read two books that are based on the ethnographic work and articles about different people life styles. they are filled with their experiences and challenges they go through. The Milionaire Next Door

The first chapter of, "The Millionaire Next Door," revolves heavily around the characteristics of people who are millionaires. Many people believe that people who are bathing in money will act, dress, and show they are. For example, "These people cannot be millionaires! They don't even look like millionaires, they don't dress like millionaires, they don't eat like millionaires, they don't act like millionaires-they don't even have millionaire names. Where are the millionaires who look like millionaires?" This was from the vice president of a trust department. This view is seemingly shared by many other people who are very wealthy. Although these views do make the millionaire out to be a greedy scrooge, here are some facts. Most millionaires (about 97%) are homeowners with their house being at the value of $320,000, who lived in their home close to 20 years. Some millionaires even have a fund to where in case they lose all thei

Culturally Competent Nursing Care

Health and quality health care is deserved of everyone, no matter their cultural background, religion, or beliefs. These factors do, however, influence a person's health, ability to seek medical help, and their response to medical care. In order to provide safe, competent care, a nurse must be knowledgeable and respectful of each patient's culture and beliefs. Considering patient's cultural beliefs increases the likelihood that the patient will be satisfied with his or her care, which in turn increases the probability that the patient will continue with treatment and follow up. In order to provide culturally competent health care, a nurse must have active diversity awareness. This means the nurse would be able to recognize similarities and differences within and between different cultural groups. Part of being culturally competent for a nurse is understanding one's own views on culture, as well as views of the patients. It is very important to be aware and understand the patient's views without judging or stereotyping. To begin, one must be aw

Allusion to Mythology in Hamlet

William Shakespeare's flamboyant and versatile style of writing exhibited in the world-known tragedy – Hamlet, attracts readers of all kind and stands the centuries, often as a ground to heated debates. All thanks to his glorious ability to use in abundance his extraordinary vocabulary, which is proven to enrich our language with 1700 different words still in use nowadays. Examples of these words are: addiction, belongings, cold-blooded, dishearten, eventful, fashionable, inaudible, manager, multitudinous, uncomfortable, and many more. Writer owns entirely divergent technique of writing, including application to profusion of literary devices, unusual order of words in a sentence and structure of it, pan and even though we could talk of it ceaselessly, I am going to speak about different feature of Shakespeare's ingenuity – his aptitude in referencing mythology. Both Biblical and mythological allusions conveyed through the enigmatic character of Prince Hamlet, leave puissa

Canadian Hate Crime Laws

The Department of Justice of Canada defines hate crimes as "crimes in which the offender is motivated by a characteristic of the victim that identifies the victim as a member of a group towards which the offender feels some animosity" (Julian V Roberts, 1995). By examining statistics it can be seen that laws relating to hate crimes are still needed to provide security to vulnerable groups. Hate crime laws inflict a harsher punishment for criminals who specifically target their victims and many do not believe that this is right. On the other hand individuals see hate crime laws as a violation of their freedom of speech rights. Canadian Policy Hate crimes can consist of discrimination, public hate propaganda, or be as violent as assault and murder ("Understanding Hate/ Bias Crime and Incidents"). The laws do not punish opinions or speech but are based purely on criminal actions (An Introduction to Hate Crime Laws, n.d). Canadian agencies like the Federal Center for

The Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb

While reading "The Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb," I thought that Bibbs commitment and love for his family were drawbacks in his life. One reason why I believe that is because as I was reading the book I noticed that he wanted to escape but every time he escaped, his first thought was to go back after his family. I think that it was great that he wanted to have his whole family free with him but it was a risky task to complete, considering the fact that there were always slave hunters everywhere looking for escaped slaves and he could ruin his chance at freedom. Henry Bibb was crazy for girls. He wanted all the girls to like and chase after him as he did to them. One thing about Henry was that even though he was fascinated by girls, the land of liberty was constantly on his mind. In the book Henry Bibb mentions "I had no intention of courting or marrying her, for I was aware that such a step would obstruct my way to the land of liberty", which is showing that even tho

Gregor in The Methamorphosis

"The Metamorphosis," by Franz Kafka, is about a boy named, Gregor. Gregor works as a traveling salesman selling fabric to pay off his family's debt. His father had a business that surceased, so Gregor is now working to pay it back. Gregor has a sister Grete, they are close and she is assiduous to Gregor. She had a great fidelity to Gregor and caring for him. One morning Gregor wakes up and everything has changed and he becomes obfuscated. Kafka used parallels from his life and delineated them to Gregor. Through surrealism and isolation Kafka represents the self-value a single individual has in society. For example, a parallel between Kafka and Gregor is the relationship between his father and himself. Franz Kafka's family was a middle-class Jewish family. He grew up the oldest of six children; two of his brother died as infants and his three sisters lost their lives in concentration camps. The relationship between Kafka and his father was particularly distant. "His father, Hermann Kafka, was described as a huge ill-tempered domestic tyrant, who on many occasions directed his ang

Lifting Weights - Barbells and Dumbells

Have you ever wondered what is the difference is between barbells and dumbbells? Some of meatheads in the gym decline to use anything but heavy weights, so you'll only see them using barbells. While barbells do have the benefit of letting you move a lot of weight, there are a number of advantages to training with dumbbells instead. Rather than viewing it as an either/or situation, you should strategically take advantage of the strengths and weaknesses of each type of free weight, barbells and dumbbells, to develop the best possible physique. The majority of your big, compound exercises (movements that require more than one joint and more than one muscle group) can be accomplished with a barbell. But as the Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding points out, most muscle groups only have one or two barbell exercises. On the other hand, dumbbells often are the best tools for performing isolation exercises. For example, while the barbell bench press is the

Book Review - Prisoner of Tehran

I confess that as a citizen of Canada I take a great deal of our personal freedoms for granted. It is difficult to avoid. I grew up without a fear of dedicating myself to the wrong religion or political party. I was never faced with certain death when it came to any of the personal decisions I made. Marina Nemat's Prisoner of Tehran provides me with the context necessary to remind exactly how fortunate I am to be a Canadian citizen. This memoir details Marina's teenage years where she is subjected to torture and incarceration within one of the most notorious political prisons in Iran. It shares not only her memories but her personal turmoil and viewpoint on Iran under the Islamic Regime of Ayatollah Khomeini. I felt that it was her mission to shed light on the inhumane treatment of women and persons of alternate religious and political views through her writing. She also wished to express the idea that life was precious and worth preserving. This paper will provide a synopsis of the bo

Technological Trends

Each new technology brings about an influx of alternative technologies in an attempt to improve, adapt, and expand on the original concept. Computers and technological devices are becoming more capable of some things that even we cannot do without much time and energy spent. Computers are talking to us, telling us which restaurant we should go to tonight, helping us drive, and diagnosing patients. This is all due to continuous competition among companies and technology producers to get the newest and greatest thing out there. Of course, this is all done for profit but capitalism values and encourages growth and rivalry. Especially in terms of technology, where there is always something better to be turned into profit, this leads to a civilization that is perpetually changing, improving, and advancing beyond the contemporary norms. Take for instance, the iPad, which is capable of doing nearly everything a computer can, with more adequate viewing capacity than an iPhone. This revolut

In Cold Blood - Truman Capote

The small town of Holcomb, Kansas never expected the Clutter family to be brutally murdered on the night of November 15, 1959. Truman Capote's, In Cold Blood was the innovation of a new literature style after being credited the first of non-fiction writing. When the novel was first published there was a lot of controversy over the credibility of the writing. This could be predictable in that time because people weren't familiar with non-fiction novels yet, but this is the beauty of non-fiction with its recreation of the truth. The story is based mostly off what the two murders, Dick Hickock and Perry Smith said. Even though Capote bonds with both men and acknowledges Dick's elaborate brain, he still favors and is bias towards Perry to have the readers feel sympathy for Perry. Capote's bias towards Perry was for a multiple reasons. One of them was how he uses Perry's mental illness to the get the readers to feel sympathy. Since the book was written off of a lot about what Dick and Pe

To His Mistress Going to Bed by John Donne

This essay will discuss the poem To His Mistress Going To Bed by John Donne. It will focus on the diction, figures of speech and rhetoric, tone and form that appear in the poem and how Donne used these tools to convey his intended message. To His Mistress Going To Bed was written in the late-sixteenth century, but not published until after Donne's death in 1631, like most of his work. It was considered too improper to have been included in the publishing of the first edition of his work in 1633. In the poem, Donne writes about the experience of undressing his Mistress in different stages, how his excitement and desire grows throughout the poem until he exclaims, in an ecstasy of admiration, "full nakedness!" (33). The beginning of the poem (approximately 18 lines) focuses on the narrator instructing a woman to undress. One can assume that the female is quite young and most likely still a virgin. First he orders her to remove her "girdle", to "unpin" her "breastplate", to "unlace" her

Themes of Oppression in Aves Sin Nido

Clorinda Matto de Turner's novel, "Aves sin nido," published in July 1889, caused controversies amongst intellectuals. Some praised the novel for its accurate portrayal of Peruvian life. Others condemned it for its social critique of the national model of Peru and for its anticlerical tone. Whether praising or condemning Matto's most famous novel, there is no denying that the novel is based around the idea of the native culture of Peru exemplified through the characters of the novel. The novel highlights the oppression faced by the Indians through a triad, consisting of the judge, the governor, and the church. The first element of the triad is the judge. The judge, Verdejo, is seen as a corrupt force when faced with the inquiry into the attack on Marín's house. He overlooks the evidence and accepts the view of the local gentry that the blame lies with the village sexton. The local officials are consta

Emerson, Thoreau, and Dickinson

Transcendentalism blossomed during the 1800s with the help of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau. Emily Dickinson was part of Realism-most people like Realism because of the way ideas were expressed. Emerson and Thoreau were Transcendentalists who expressed their beliefs through writings from poems to essays and they believed that "the individual was at the center of the universe" (Prentice Hall). The idea of Transcendentalism is complex and for this reason, only a number of people understood it. For this reason, Transcendentalism interests me. Emerson, Thoreau, and Dickinson, were one of the many authors who were part of Transcendentalism and Realism; these writers went out of their way in society to represent their beliefs-but Transcendentalism is by far a huge attraction. First, Emerson's beliefs were mainly on "the human mind [because it] was the most important force in the universe" (Prentice Hall). In "Nature", Emerson viewed nature as th

Drunk Mom by Jowita Bydlowska

Jowita Bydiowska's memoir, "Drunk Mom," is about a mother who suffers from alcoholism. Motherhood is a term that does not have a single definition, since it has sentimental significance to women. Characteristics that a mother portrays can help define motherhood. However, every mother has their own description of the term motherhood based on their experiences. Motherhood begins once a women gives birth to a child. Jowita does not fulfill the expectation of motherhood as she is sometimes irresponsible. She sometimes cannot put her son as her first priority when alcohol is around her. Although Jowita does not always meet the expectations of motherhood, she certainly carries a lot of love for her son without a doubt. In this memoir motherhood is meaningful to Jowita and brings a positive impact on her life despite having her problems. Jowita introduces herself in the beginning by stating she is an alcoholic. Jowita constantly speaks about alcohol until she mentions the time when she finds her out she is pregnant. When s

Crown Court and Magistrate Court

Magistrates Courts and Crown Courts comprise different courts. The differences of both is going to be examined thoroughly in the following sections. Moreover, one is going to be able to understand the level of authority each court has, on the grounds of the seriousness of the offenses they deal with and of other authorities they have. Examples of different kinds of offenses are going to be explored, in an effort to give a complete understanding of the powers and duties of the courts. Nearly all cases start in a Magistrates Court and about 90-95% of cases are completed there. Only the most serious offenses are dealt with in a Crown Court. These serious offenses can start in a Magistrates Court and passed on to a Crown Court either for sentencing, or for a full trial by a judge and a jury. In order to understand which offenses are serious and which are not, there is a categorization of summary and indictable-only offenses. Summary offenses are minor offenses, such as motoring offenses and minor assaults

Argument Against Animal Testing

Animal testing is an issue in today's society that, whether or not anyone realizes it, it does affect each of us, through things such as medicine, beauty products, to almost any product you have in your own homes. We have all used medications. We have all used some types of man-made product, if not hundreds throughout our lives. Today a large debate has erupted on whether it should be okay or not. Many people are pro towards this research, and let it continue, but there are a great deal of people who oppose animal testing, and they make sure their opinions are heard. Articles by people like Justin Goodman, and Ben Goldacre discuss this issue. Even some artists, through political cartoons, want a say in this debate. Though through different ways, the works of these 3 authors, make one statement clear; animal testing should not be allowed. One major point discussed by all three authors is the cruelty used in animal testing. That is the main topic in many protester's arguments. Animals a

The Villianous Christopher Columbus

The depiction of Christopher Columbus in the national media today is that of a charismatic leader and founder of the New World. According to Miller, it should be noted that Leif Erikson and his Viking comrades arrived in America some 500 years before Christopher Columbus even prepared for his voyage thus on practical terms, establishes them as the first pioneers to set foot on the New World from the European perspective (2014). But nevertheless, the right circumstances and sequence of events launched Christopher Columbus into the history books as the "Founder of the New World" and the forerunner of Western civilization in the Americas. Christopher Columbus was not a man of great integrity as the history books have alluded him to be. He was more concerned with his personal accolades and recognition, he had a slavery mentality that was quite vivid in his description of the Native Americans he encountered, and his greed and lust for gold prompted him to commit atrocious acts.

The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane

The novel, The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane is based on a short period of time when a regiment of soldiers fight their way through the Civil War and Crane shares with his readers all about their experiences. Throughout the story Crane uses imagery to help his readers relate to these experiences. Crane's various uses of imagery let readers actually feel the emotions these soldiers felt during the conflicts and struggles they went through. Imagery can be used in many ways. It can describe all five of the senses: feelings, smells, tastes, visuals, and sounds. In addition, religious imagery, animal imagery, and color imagery can help the author describe events in his novel. Imagery is a very useful literary device. It, not only, enhances the author's writing but it helps readers comprehend and relate to the events he's trying to describe. One way imagery recalls thoughts is through visuals. If the author uses adjectives to describe a sight, thoughts of that sight will come to your mind. You will try to remember where you hav

Advantages and Disadvantages of School Uniforms

The use of school uniforms may have their advantages and disadvantages. Many people believe that school uniforms go against our rights, our freedom of expression, by being told what to wear and when to wear it. Other people believe that school uniforms are a great technique to use within private and public schools. David L. Brunsma, an author of the book "The School Uniform Movement" states, "requiring students to wear uniforms is a change that affects mot only students, but also school faculty and parents" (184-185). In my opinion, I feel that school uniforms are a great thing to implement at a national level. Statistics show that students who wear school uniforms make do tremendously better at school, whether it is their grades, or their attendance. The students are not as distracted by what one another is wearing, and students feel equal amongst their peers, no one has to argue on who has a better what. Wearing school uniforms is also more affordable in the wo

Protecting Global Commons

Global commons is defined as, according to the LMBSO, areas and resources not under national sovereignty that belong to no single country and are the responsibility of the entire world. The oceans, beyond the two-hundred-mile limit, outer space, and Antarctica are global commons areas. Despite efforts by governments or individuals to establish property rights or other forms of control over most natural resources, the global commons have remained an exception, which is why they are so difficult to protect. Global commons are very difficult to protect because they aren't owned by any one country or individual. According to, "The Tragedy of the Commons," the biggest issue we have is people who privately own land go somewhere else, a common area, to get their natural resources they need instead of using their own land. For example if four fisherman
