1776 by David McCulloughThe book, "1776," covers almost everything in depth from the declaration of war on the American colonies by King George III in 1775, to the American victory at Trenton in late 1776. General George Washington led an army of everyday men, untrained, inexperienced, and out manned. The British redcoats, led by General William Howe, were the best fighters in the world. They were the best trained, had a lot of experience, and had the largest army. The battle of Bunker Hill is talked about early in the book. This battle was a costly British victory, with 1,054 casualties. The British leader was General Howe. The first attackers for the British were not so lucky, as many of them died. Eventually, the British would take control and take Breed's Hill. The Americans led by Colonel William Prescott were about 1,200 soldiers strong. Before the battle Colonel Prescott led the troops onto Breed's Hill to set up artillery positions. These positions were set up aiming directly at Boston. At first C |

Application Essay - I ConqueredOn that first day of school, I was perhaps the most exhilarated person in class. I was excited to be starting fourth grade and elated to be in this new place where everyone looked prim and proper and girls made their hair and spoke proper English. Even though I looked nondescript compared to everyone else's sophisticated nature, I was glad to be here. Little did I know that my first class that day was going to expose my language deficiency. As the teacher wrote the word, "consovolpho," on the board, I had no idea what that meant. All through the class, as she elaborated on the topic, my memory roamed, with the word singing in my ears. The more I tried to decipher the meaning of this word, the more obfuscated I became, until eventually I gave up. "Hey you! Why are you not writing?" The sudden shift in attention brought me back to the present. With all eyes on me, I did not need a soothsayer to tell me that the question was |

St. Augustine's Discovery of ChristianityAugustine's Confessions is a personal recollection of his ascent from a life of sin and emptiness to one of fulfillment and higher understanding. He started his quest (from where we entered his voyage) rejecting God, but as his books are titled Confessions, Augustine begins to confess his sins and flaws to God in order to understand a deeper meaning of life. In a sense his books are a message to Him, serving as Augustine's gradual revelation to spiritual enlightenment. Pertaining to a much broader audience, Augustine's Confessions are a prime example of how all humans strive to reach a higher understanding of God. Because his Confessions are an autobiographical account, the audience has the ability to see the changes in his theological and philosophical approaches to his writings. Before reading the bible, Augustine was avid follower of the Neoplatonic views, but his accomplishments are best realized through his ability to intertwine the values of both the Neoplatonic ideologies with the Christian counterparts. Philosophy's Stance on RealityEvery aspect of experience begs this question, how do I know this is real? How do I know I am experiencing what my brain says I am? What if everything I see and love and enjoy is an illusion of senses? This uncertainty can be shown through the very simple act of experiencing something physical, like a potato. We experience this with primary and secondary qualities. The hardness or roundness of this potato seems the same for everybody, but then we look at taste and smell and touch and suddenly this is left up to interpretation and opinion. The secondary qualities are therefore better described as beliefs than knowledge. I know the potato tastes bad to me, but I may appreciate others' tastes are different. I know the potato feels rounded and hard, and although this is more certain than the secondary qualities, it is still an uncertain. I do not know how this potato truly is, as I am limited to one perspective. The empirical senses perhaps are not so reliable. Rationalism, for one, infe |

Porphyria's Lover - A Monologue of InsanityIs it more poetic to die after enjoying the greatest night of your life, or remain living until you're too old and weak to take care of yourself? In Robert Browning's "Porphyria's Lover," the author takes us inside the mind of a madman who reveals the dark side of human nature, and how death is twisted into a demented form of compassion. In "Porphyria's Lover," a dramatic monologue, the author gets his points across through the use of symbolism, imagery, and relying on the readers' ability not only to understand what is happening but more importantly why it's happening. The first clue that something unusual or violent is going to occur and also makes us question the mental health of the main character comes directly from the name of the poem. It is such an odd name, there must be a hidden meaning behind it, and in fact there is. "Porphyria" is defined as a hereditary disease that affects your nervous system, skin and other organs (Mayo Clinic). The sheer fact that |

Headlights by Eminem - Song Analysis"Headlights," is a song by American rapper Eminem, featuring Nate Ruess. In this song, Eminem apologizes to his mother, Debbie Mathers, for dissing her in some of his previous songs and for showing resentment and for disrespecting her in the past. Eminem has had a difficult relationship with his mother since childhood. He feels as if he has done wrong and composes this song for forgiveness from his mother. First, Eminem references to a few incidents from their bad relationship such as, "getting kicked out on Christmas Eve," and his younger brother Nathan being taken away from them at 8 years old, and put into foster care. Yet, he expresses regret because he has never let his mother be involved in her granddaughter's lives. He mentions that his mother wrongfully took most of the blame for his tough childhood and also gives her credit for raising him as a single parent. Also, he states that he cringes when he listens to the diss song he wrote to his mother, "Cleaning out My Closet," on the radio an |

Indus River Valley CivilizationWhile the Fertile Crescent was widely known for being one of the first and earliest civilizations developed, the world eventually saw other great civilizations that came to rise. However, just like the civilizations of the Fertile Crescent, some of these civilizations ended up ceasing to exist as a result from many different possible causes. One notable example of a once powerful civilization that came to a downfall is the Indus River Valley Civilization. One question that should be asked is: What was really the main cause of the disappearance of this once powerful civilization? Before giving an answer to this question, it is important to take into consideration how the settlers of the Indus River Valley accomplished the highest peaks of successes that they were able to reach. While consistency was seen within the basic and fundamental components during the development of this complex society, the most significant factors that shaped the Indus River Valley into an advanced and complex |

Tragic Characters in Macbeth and HamletWilliam Shakespeare is famous for his tragedies and within those tragedies are legendary characters that will always live on. In this essay I will compare and contrast two of Shakespeare greatest characters from two of his greatest works, they are Macbeth and Claudius. For starters Claudius and Macbeth are both incredibly ambitious characters. That's probably the main reason that all their problems begin in the first place. Their ambition and lust for power is what causes them to murder the reigning kings of their countries so they can assume the throne, eventually succeeding on it. However their methods for doing all the horrible things they did are different. For starters if it wasn't for the three witches that prophesied that Macbeth would be king he wouldn't have had that crazy idea, and he wouldn't had murdered King Duncan. However Claudius idea and reason to kill Hamlets father, was completely his decision so that he could obtain the power that he so deeply desired. Unlike Macbeth, Claudius does not murder without motive or to avoid the consequences of his |

Taking Responsibility for Global WarmingAccording to professor Jonathan Baron, "It might be argued that we should have known about global warming since 1896, when Svante Arrhenius first proposed the idea and then provided estimates that agree fairly well with modern computer models," (140). This shows that people were careless about this problem since the beginning of the new industrial age. When the first man showed the theory of global warming, they just ignored him. Some often refrains by saying global warming is a natural cycle of the earth. Some people feel regretful, and concerned; some are just careless. Distinctive perspectives yield diverse thinking on this issue. Throughout the many years, researchers have examined Earth's atmosphere to find the causes and effect of the global warming and looking for the solution to decrease its causes. Whether we ignore this topic, global warming issue is a major concern to government, schools and media globally. Global warming has caught the attention of many in recen |

Two Different Views on the Death PenaltySome think that "an eye for an eye" is an effective means of punishment, but others believe that such means of punishment are not effective in a modern society. The death penalty is a highly disputable topic, one that separates and unites. People are against the death penalty because they think it is immoral and it isn't right to take someone else's life. Some are also against the death penalty because they believe that the government should not have the right to dictate who lives and who dies. Both sides of the death penalty argument are valid, but it falls on each individual to make the decision as to where they stand. Two individuals that stand on opposite sides of the debate are Edward Koch and David Bruck. Edward Koch uses the rhetorical appeals of emotion and logic in his article, "Death and Justice: How Capital Punishment Affirms Life" more effectively than David Bruck does in "The Death Penalty". Mayor Edward Koch believes that the death penalty is necessar |

Ethics of Embryonic Stem Cell ResearchStem cells are unique and rare cells that are not assigned to carry out a specific function and are defined by two properties: self-renewal and differentiation. Self-renewal is an ability that allows the cell to divide and make more cells. Differentiation is the ability to separate and make specialized cells. Many different types of stem cells have been discovered, but only the embryonic stem cell seems to work easily and effectively. Embryonic stem cells are found in the inner cell mass contained in an embryo. To extract the inner cell mass scientists must "kill" the embryo. This brings up a few troubling questions such as: At what point does life begin? And does an embryo have the same rights as a human? Different religious groups and countries have outlined their own specific rules. New uses and sources of embryonic stem cells are being created and utilized for research. By destroying one egg, which may be a possible single life, stem cells may be able to prevent and allev |

Photography and the Joy of MotherhoodDorothea Lange was a documentary photographer who was most famous for her depression-era work, which helped develop documentary photography. She began this line of work in December of 1935, after divorcing her husband, Maynard Dixon. She then married an economics Professor from University of California, Berkeley by the name of Paul Schuster Taylor. For five years they traveled and documented the Great Depression with all of its social and political matters. Migrant Mother, her most famous work, depicts a mother by the name of Florence Owens Thompson. In the photo she has a hand on her face, a child in arms, and two other children leaning on her shoulders. Florence was at a stage of starvation and not even her children could bring a smile to her face. She seems to be holding it together for her children but she doesn't look very happy. Another photo by Dorothea Lange, which is not very well known, shows a different story. Migrant Cotton Picker and Her Baby was taken in the late 1940s on |

An Overview of Online GamingIntroduction Today, Internet and electronic devices play indispensable role in modern society as a result of rapid technological development which has incorporated into people's daily lives (Hellström et al., 2012). Over the last decade, there had been an increase in academic attention given to online gaming as the dominant activity among college students. From sport-related games to mission-based games and quests inspiring users to complete challenges, interactive games cater for a wide range of interests, and can enable users to link up and play together. Internet connectivity in a game adds a new opportunity for gamers as it allows players to find and play against, or with, other players from around the world (in a multi-player game). Games can provide a fun and social form of entertainment often encouraging teamwork and cooperation when played with others (Childnet International, 2011). Some games require players to learn about social, political and historical development. Th |

The Environmental Movement of Going GreenAbstract Have you ever heard the phrase "everything old will eventually be new again"? As a child, I remember being confused when I heard that phrase wondering what it meant; maybe a new birth of some sort. Now that several years have passed I now know the answer to that question, yes. A rebirth or recycle is the perfect way to explain that statement; having spent several years on this earth I have witnessed the recycling of music, clothing, hairstyles, and even cultural movements. The same concept goes for recycling. The idea of recycling the recycling concept has been going on for some time now. In fact, it is a safe bet to say recycling dates back as far as supply and demand. Throughout the years recycling has taken on different names and faces. The latest name it is now donning is "Going Green". Although it has changed and evolved as people and technology had done so, its core existence remains intact; to ultimately save. The going green goal is to reduce, reus |

Finding My Best Academic SubjectFor as long as I can remember, I've always had an infatuation with numbers. I learned to count before I could read. I preferred "times tables" tests to spelling tests. I would go as far as to consider math my first language, instead of Spanish. There's something about the reliability of math that's always appealed to me. How every problem has its set of answers (basically speaking), and how, to an extent, math is more certain than life itself. Growing up, I was never certain of whether I was going home to a roof over my head or a meal on the table. I took to math in the hopes of finding some form of comfort and conviction(?). It wasn't until I reached high school that I realized math wasn't necessarily my cup of tea. Sure, I've excelled in my math classes, usually being the first one to answer questions and receiving high marks on my exams, but my interest in math slipped when I realized that all I was doing was memorizing arbitrary rules. I was always told that I'd have |

Macbeth Scene AnalysisIn the beginning of scene 1, Macbeth experiences a powerful hallucination. In his hallucination he ponders over a dagger, his murder weapon for King Duncan's eventual death. The hallucination is significant because it is a direct product of his guilt, proving he is remorseful about his actions, thus showing anti-heroic traits. The hallucination was triggered by his subconscious because his good nature would not be able to commit murder and treason by killing his King, unless he was not his true self momentarily. The fact that Macbeth experiences such guilt towards the deed proves he is an anti-hero. During the end of soliloquy, Macbeth begins to enjoy the evil horror of the moment. This character shift shows out a villainous side to him, bringing out the heartless, ruthless soldier within him. This reflects the traits of a villain, but an anti-hero as well, as he has a flawed sense of morality. This proves that he may lie somewhere on a spectrum in between the two labels. The scene end |

My Worst Academic SubjectEnglish is my weakness. Not because I can't write or analyze, but because I'm not proud of what I produce. All my life I've been a part of situations I can't control. My mother's income (or lack thereof), for instance, was predetermined mainly because she lived most of her life outside of the country. Watching her struggle and knowing there was nothing I could do to help her made me weak. It made me vulnerable and useless, and it's definitely a feeling I despise. It got worse when I was given pseudo-fathers. My mother has been with a number of men: my father, my brother's father, and now my step-father. After she left my father in Cuba, my opinions didn't matter when she chose to share her life with someone new. I was wasting my breath, as this became another situation in which my thoughts and feelings were casted out and I had to deal with the repercussions. I define weakness as not being able to confide in my potential ability to do well with something. My experiences have made me |

Public Welfare - Leviathan and The Wealth of NationsIn search of the inner drive dominating human motives, Thomas Hobbes and Adam Smith generally agree on the powerful motivation of self-interest. In Leviathan (1651), Hobbes constructs the natural men as individualistic, unfettered power-seeking animals, whose free-operating self-interest would force them to live in a disastrous eternal war. However, this self-centering nature is also the prime mover towards establishment of society and government, where men practice moderation of personal interest to attain a peaceful and cooperative life. Within the narrower context of modern economics in The Wealth of Nations (1776), Adam Smith confirms Hobbes's idea that self-interest could indeed serve public welfare. He asserts that the human nature to look after their own welfare, under "a well-governed society," will lead to a more efficient economy, and ultimately generate "universal opulence" (11). Despite their agreement on social impacts of self-interest, Hobbes and Smith |

Social Psychology Term PaperIndividuals have different behaviors depending on how they feel, think, want, or what they do because these things change from moment to moment. This paper will be writing about human personality and how this can be influence by other psychological subfield in social and clinical factors. I will explain how personality can be in a child-learning environment and influential adults in life and how these influences shape those behaviors. These changes show how the personality is and help to recognize, and understand the individual. "Personality is an abstraction used to explain consistency and coherency in an individuals' pattern of affects, cognitions, desires and behaviors" (Revelle, n.d). According to Feist and Feist,"personality is a pattern of relatively permanent traits and unique characteristics that give both consistency and individuality to a person's behavior. Sigmund Freud was one who developed his theory in the modern psychology. Psychoanalytic was his theory |

The Greatness of ShakespeareShakespeare once said "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them"- truly I believe he himself is greatness for his simple devotion and love for art and literature. Known as one of the finest poets of all time, Shakespeare is also acknowledged for the beauty of his words and thoughts; struck with rich emotions and the characters he's created are beautifully dimensional with both positive and negative attributes, as well as this he has taught us that mistakes and wrong-doings are allowed as long as we learn from them. Not only has he created such characters with strong charisma, but his themes- love, betrayal, esteem, bravery and political tragedy are yet still very much alive today. Society is interested in his work to this this day because yet after four hundred years, we are still able to relate to his characters. This is a man, who has helped define our sense of culture, however people know him more for his reputation than his leg |

Who is Responsible for a Student's Success?Who is to blame? Some say teachers, parents, students, or even the entire educational program, but the responsibility falls on all of them. Nilaja Sun's "No Child" successfully demonstrates that it takes more than one person to truly unlock student's potential and ensure success. Janitor Baron argued, "Hush! You don't know unless you been in the schools on a day-to-day basis. HUSH! You don't know unless you been a teacher, administrator, student, or custodial staff."(1911). Hospital Pagers for a More Stress-Free EnvironmentWhether your loved one is undergoing a minimal or major surgery, waiting for them can be stressful and unpleasant. With the help of hospital pagers and paging systems for families, it can greatly lighten the situation. A lot of hospitals make use of the Queue Mobile's Patient Q system. It is integrated to health systems to communicate better with fellow staffs, family and patients. This offers a less stressful environment to the patient and also the family be lessening their "perceived" waiting time. Romeo and Juliet - Love Builds and DestroysIn the play "Romeo and Juliet," William Shakespeare demonstrates that love can build and destroy communities in many diverse ways. The rivalry between Capulet and Montague arises destruction. Many unfortunate events and deaths occur because of the unique love that Romeo and Juliet share. While love causes great tragedy, it is also love that ultimately reconciles the communities of Verona. Romeo and Juliet displays various kinds of love. Love is a strong feeling of affection, a great interest or pleasure in something, to feel a deep affection, a desire, a longing or fondness for someone or something. A general conception of love is a warm feeling that is based upon knowing and accepting someone. There is mutual learning, caring and growth, and also happiness. The Objectifcation of WomenMany women are guilty of enhancing photographs of themselves, their friends and their surroundings before posting them on social media sites, such as Snapchat, Instagram, or Facebook. Many women do this because they feel that if they make themselves incredibly pretty, or abnormally skinny that they will get more attention from their friends and even guys. How can we possibly live a normal life when we think there is always a need for improvement, whether it be to be skinnier, prettier, or just a completely different person? Especially when Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian and Lindsey Lohan's lives look more beautiful, glamorous, and polished than yours. The real question is why do people feel the need to make themselves so close to "perfection"? Although this desire to look beautiful has always existed, social media now affords us the tools to achieve this image. Too many teenage girls in America obsess over this assumption that they must have the perfect image, not realizing |
