The History of World War I

The early twentieth-century was full of political tension. Europe's great powers were progressively coming to standoffs over acquiring new colonies. At the same time the Ottoman Empire was slowly crumbling. Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, and Serbia became independent affecting the balance of power in Europe. However open hostilities were triggered by the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Francis Ferdinand by a Serbian nationalist in 1914. Austrians seeking vengeance blamed the Kingdom of Serbia and attacked Belgrade. The Serbs were allied with Russia and asked for their assistance. Germany alarmed by Russian mobilization called for them to stand down. Austria declared war on Serbia, their Russian allies declared war on Austria. Germany allied with Austria declared war on Russia. Russian allies France and Britain declared war on Germany and World War I began. The combatants were aligned in two opposing alliance; the Allies consisting of United Kingdom, France, and Russia and the Central Powers consisting of Germany and Austria. Italy joined the Central Powers after the Treaty of London in which Italy was to gain territory in Aust

The Most Expensive and Controversial Soup

Like many dishes in traditional cultures, shark fin soup has long been served as a symbol of class and prosperity. Chinese culture can date this tradition back to the early Sung Dynasty. Shark fin soup is usually served at weddings and other special occasions of wealthy individuals. One would actually be looked down upon if this was not served. This meal costs roughly around one hundred dollars a bowl. It is only surpassed in price by such delicacies as truffles and caviar. But due to the vitality of the Chinese economy and the popularity of Chinese culture, this soup has become more common over the past decade or so. Even to the point it is now served on buffets. Many people do not know the issues behind the kitchen though. Illegal shark fishing, overfishing, destruction of ecosystem biodiversity, and a species near extinction, just to name a few. Shark finning is the illegal practice of catching a shark, cutting off the fins of the animal and discarding the carcass back into

The Mexican Drug War

Imagine walking outside witnessing people getting severely injured or even murdered! Several incidents like this have been reported numerous times in Mexico. Drug cartels are the people committing these crimes. Drug cartels are the "criminal organizations that control the distribution of illegal drugs through formal or informal enterprises" (Ackerman). In Mexico, violence has increased consistently due to the drug war. These cartels continue to injure, murder, kidnap, and rape people. However, in recent months cartels have been committing violence in silence instead of being bold about their moves. "Cartels became silent by not committing massive massacres". "When the cartels were bold they committed massacres of which one massacre included 72 deaths" (Miroff). The Mexican drug war is not given much attention. Failure to address these issues can lead harsh disasters in the future. The main location of the cartel operates is Mexico (Miroff). Unfortunately M

Short Story - The Fall of Rome

The sound of my horse's hooves echoed in the darkness of the woods as he trotted on. As he moved deeper in the forest, the snow kept increasing, causing his handsome black mane to turn white. He walked very slowly, breathing hard; he seemed exhausted. Therefore, I reined him and tied his reigns to a tree. I got-off his back and loosened his saddle. Soon, I was hit by a flash back that reminded me why I was here. I remembered the fall of my empire, the greatest empire of all times, the Roman Empire, and how I, the Caesar, was forced to flee to keep Rome alive. And here I was, fighting my biggest war, not knowing how long I would keep myself and Rome alive. I snapped back to the present, as I felt a sudden movement at my back. I investigated the surrounding for any other glimpses of movement but there weren't any. I unsheathed my imperial gold sword, 'Fortis' (The Mighty); it shone even in fog of darkness. I warily went near my horse, and picked my circular bronze shield, which h

This Above All: To Thine Own Self Be True

Introduction: It is amazing how many of us are not true to ourselves. Some of us allow others to define who we are as people. Others even our parents dictate us to choose our course for study and profession without knowing our aim, ability and ambition. Some of us do not accept ourselves and try to act differently. Frustration grows within us and we do not do any justice to our society through our work. Some of us do not even love ourselves. This not only makes us unhappy but creates lot of problems for the society. Even if we may have our own self which are exclusively decided by us without other's influences but inspite of our tireless effort we could not make them true. Will it not be painful to us? Is it due to the fact that our self is misunderstood by us? Is enough effort was not take to make them true? Shakespeare's quote "this above all: to thine own self be true" is perfect advice that tells us to act, know, and love ourselves as human beings. This would be

Secondary Airports Effective in India

Introduction Over the past decade, India has seen a rapid growth and development in the aviation sector. From a poorly managed and lowly invested sector, the Indian aviation industry has climbed the ladder to a more liberalized and investor friendly sector. The advent of privatization and the introduction of LCC's have been the key contributors to the growth. The sector now boasts of 10 major scheduled airliners and world class airport infrastructure at tier one cities. The transfer of the country's major airports to private players under the public private partnership has led to the development of airport infrastructure that competes with leading airports across the globe. Also factors like a 100% FDI limit in airport investments and the birth of AERA have made the aviation platform a more stable one. The rise in competition among airliners is a consequence of the rising number of low cost carriers introducing themselves into the market. This has fuelled the air traffic growth in the

Rhetorical Analysis - Silent Spring

Exigence When Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was published in September 27, 1962, it triggered a storm of disputes over the use of chemical pesticides. Her book helped raise awareness for the environment, warn humans of the dangers of using pesticides such as DDT, preserve several plant and animal species, and make the atmosphere cleaner. Her intent in writing Silent Spring was to warn the public of the dangers related with pesticide use. Throughout her book are countless case studies documenting the harmful effects that chemical pesticides have had on the environment. Along with these facts, she explains how in many occasions the pesticides have done more harm than good in eliminating the pests they were supposed to destroy. Carson points out that many of the long-term effects that these chemicals may have on the environment, as well as us humans, are still unknown in addition to her report. The argument in Carson's Silent Spring led to the passing of environmental legislation and the

The Yellow Wallpaper - Response Paper

Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper" is about a married woman struggling with an illness and is confined to a single room unable to do what she loves, which is to write. Throughout the story the author suggests that she is stuck in confinement due to her gender. "The Yellow Wallpaper" explores the themes of gender and freedom and how it affects the women of the late 1800s. One example of how gender affects the narrator and the women of the late 1800s is the fact that they are unable to think for themselves. Throughout the story the narrator has an issue with thinking on her own. She is confined in a room because her husband feels he knows what is best for her health. In reality only the narrator knows what can help her and she feels that being alone in a room will not do her any good. Since she is unable to think for herself she is forced to be in solitary confinement, which ruins

My First Job Interview

It was early in the morning when I received the call that had me anxiously waiting. A few days before this, I had dropped one of many applications off at Kohl's. I had now been given the opportunity to prove to a manager that I was worthy enough to work there. Confidence has always been something that I have lacked, so now here I was trying to figure out how I would prepare myself within the next two days to find a way in which I would sell myself to a company. Previously I had been fortunate enough to find two different jobs without going through the interview process. At the time, I thought it was a positive thing, but I later came to the realization that I was not prepared for a series of questions and unsure of what to expect from this upcoming interview. I would now invest my free time preparing for this interview. Initially, I spent a couple of minutes doing some research online and made myself a checklist of what I needed to do before 6pm on Tuesday. I first realized that I d

Living as an Informed and Involved Citizen

While a collectivist society demands people to work in groups to acquire intelligence, wisdom, and skills from the social dynamics of their workplace, human feelings prevail the fact that happiness is the ultimate force which one desire the most beyond anything to deliver the ultimate value in life. In "The Fountainhead," Ayn Rand indirectly states that the current American society is suffering because too many people do not actively focus the human mind in a conscious level to benefit a productive life. In "How Are We To Live," Peter Singer suggests that people should take an ethical approach to find deeper satisfactions in life. In "Zen and the Art of Motorcycling Maintenance," Robert Pirsig emphasizes his belief that true happiness and peace of mind can only be achieved if we make "Quality" judgments in an effort to define the world around us. Writers Rand and Pirsig argues in different ways the proposition that happiness is the state of the

Advertisement Analysis - Toyota Hilux 2012

At a glance, we have never thought the thousands of ads we see have any influence on us. In this day and age, ads are a common thing and these ads are constantly being shoved to our faces. We may have thought that the mind would not be fooled by any kind of advertisement as our conscious will not permit the ideology of any kind. To this day, our preconception have been proved wrong as ads have not crept into our conscious mind, but instead have crept into our sub-conscious mind, not our conscious mind. Each ad have been through a dedicated amount of research to exploit each and one of our weaknesses. To convince people of such evil, by the analyzing two ads and then generalize them for all of the ads out there. For this purpose, the perfect examples are the two ads by Toyota which both premiered on Sept. 21 2011 for its new Hilux 2012. The ad for New Zealand is about a man driving his Hilux, overwhelming a stranger with his boastful story of traveling into different terrains- you name

Mark Twain and the Human Race

Question Do you agree with the ideas of Mark Twain or do you feel sympathy for human race? Answer Human conditions are a complex product of psychological, moral, cultural, political, economical and social compulsion. Human responses in different conditions vary from each other. One cannot generalize the human behavior the way it has been done by Mark Twain. In our cosmopolitan world man is mature enough to discredit any comparison with animals. Twain has not compared societies. His standard of comparison seems false as birds and animals do not form any organized society. Animals do not have any curiosity or will to evolve. The man possesses both curiosity and sprit of evolution. The evils of the man highlighted by Twain are unavoidable by-product of human evolution. Man, though a mortal creature possesses so many wonders in his person which are overlooked by Twain. In demonstra

Cyber-Crime in America

It is very important for companies to have anti-fraud processes and programs in place. There are even laws in place that help stave off the opportunity of fraud, however, only the individual can control their integrity and ethics. In instances where fraud is prevalent in particular fields, companies and local/federal government should work together to employ sociologists and psychologists in-house to help gain a better understanding of behaviors of people within the company(s). One such way that sociologists could assist with a solution is by profiling. "Profiling is one approach to classifying offenders for the purpose of explaining their behavior and assisting in the investigation of crime" (Kapardis & Krambia-Kapardis, 2004. Pg 189-201). Acco

Cross-Cultural Psychotherapy

It is a time-proven trend that a dominant culture will try to force its methods and what it deems as "normal" on the other cultures that live within its constraints. When the dominant or more mainstream culture expects the non-dominant culture to naturally assume its belief systems, thinking patterns and frames of reference this can lead to suppression and exclusion. If a minority culture does not submissively assimilate its ideas with those of the majority, the majority feels justified in excluding and minimizing this smaller subset of people. Those in the majority position remain unaware that the people who make up the minority have a different cultural way of life that should be valued and included. This lack of awareness can be harmful and painful to minority groups when their cultural styles are neglected by a more prevailing presence. A person's cultural context can shape not only living patterns, but also the development of an inner world and the manner in which one re

The first part entails a discussion on the transformational leadership style of leadership as practiced by Sir Richard Branson founder of the Virgin Group with particular focus on virgin train. (Avolio & Bass, 1995),describes transformational leadership as a leadership style in which leaders articulate a shared vision of the future, stimulate followers intellectually and show individual consideration to followers, this style of leadership best describes the characteristic and the leadership attributes of Richard Branson. Diet, Obesity and Children

In this day and age there are many problems that American families with children face. As a nation Americans are so busy in chasing the "American dream" that sometimes other important issues fall to the wayside and the children are the ones who suffer the consequences. In Bittman's article "Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?" he writes that there are "five fast-food restaurants for every supermarket in the United States" (Bittman 3). A common assumption among the greater population is that "junk food is cheaper than real food". It is no wonder why Americans are opting for meals that contain "unhealthy" calories. Bittman also claims that our assumptions about fast food's cheapness, high-calorie content and convenience are false (Bittman 1). He urges that a cultural change needs to occur in order to improve the health of America (Bittman 3). I agree with his claim and we as a nation need to start making changes. Fast Food has become more conven

Language and Communication

Language is an important aspect in our day to day life because it enables us to communicate. The effective communication is made possible with the help of language. Language employs a combination of words to communicate ideas in a meaningful way. By changing the word order in a sentence, you can change its meaning, and even make it meaningless. Language is created by people. It does not exist in isolation or outside the minds of people. It is created by people as they need it. Humans attach meaning to words as they need to and modify these meanings according to changing needs. Human language has the properties of productivity, recursively, and displacement, and relies entirely on social convention and learning. Its complex structure affords a much wider range of expressions than any known system of animal communication. Language is thought to have originated when early hominines started gradually changing their primate communication systems, acquiring the ability to form a th

Aristotle's Views on Citizenship

It is in people's nature to live together, to form social groups and ultimately to form a political community, in ancient Greek times known as a polis.1 However, according to Aristotle, living in a polis does not necessarily mean that one also is a full citizen of that polis and so the question arises; "Who should be able to be a citizen in a polis?" Following Aristotle's thoughts on the subject this essay will show what he thinks of citizenship, who (and who not) is eligible for citizenship, terms & conditions of citizenship and in conclusion I will form an opinion on Aristotle's points of view on this subject. Aristotle was a frequent traveller, and this experience taught him that there was no universal rule on citizenship. He states; "it often happens that one who is a citizen in a democracy is not a citizen in an oligarchy." However, Aristotle defined a common denominator for citizenship. Citizens are persons who perform public tasks. Who are different from oth

The Calling of Saint Matthew and The Night Watch

Both Caravaggio and Rembrandt were popular 17th-century artists that are known for their similar styles and methods. Caravaggio's unique style influenced many artists that came after him, including Rembrandt. The people that adopted his style are known as the Caravaggisti. The Calling of Saint Matthew by Caravaggio and The Night Watch by Rembrandt van Rijn are Baroque paintings that share styles from Caravaggio's influence, and engage the viewer while telling a story. The Calling of Saint Matthew tells the biblical story of when Jesus and an apostle confront Saint Matthew, the tax collector, and tells Matthew to follow him to become a disciple. This piece successfully portrays the distinct characteristics of a Caravaggio painting. Caravaggio was known for his use of tenebrism, which is the use of intense contrasts of light and dark. This is

Escape from Freedom by Erich Fromm

Erich Fromm, in his remarkable book of social intellectualism, titled Escape from Freedom, defines the concept of freedom from a very lucid angle. Fromm has summoned up the paradox in which the concept of freedom demands fairly close attention on the part of the reader. Fromm has analyzed what makes man want the attainment of freedom, and what makes him want to escape it at the same time. This paper sheds light on this concept of freedom as presented by Fromm in his book. To understand Fromm's idea of freedom, Fromm himself suggests that one must first understand what freedom is, why people want to escape from freedom, and how they escape it. Fromm asserts that people think of freedom as freeing themselves from some sort of worldly constraint. This freedom is what man has sought in his struggle for democracy; because in democracy, man enjoys freedom of speech, freedom of writing against undesirable occurrences, freedom of raising voice against unfavorable conditions, and freedom of nearly everything. Fromm starts his book with the statement: "Modern European and American history is centered around the effort to gain freedom from

Data Mining and Preventing Attacks

The fear of terrorist attacks has grown immensely since 9/11. America is attempting many tactics to prevent an attack like that from ever happening again. Unfortunately, many of these tactics are causing invasion of privacy into the lives of Americans. Working to stop terrorism is going to impact the everyday lives of our citizens. Furthermore, that is why it is becoming such a big issue. Many people do not want change the way they go about their everyday lives. A recent way the government has tried to prevent terrorism is by data mining the people in our country. In the article "How Do Violations of Privacy and Moral Autonomy Threaten the Basis of Our Democracy?" authors Laas-Mikko and Sutrop define data mining as "behavior detection technologies that monitor and manage malintents and abnormal behavior from a distance in order to prevent terrorism and criminal attacks". This new technology lets you sort through vast amounts of data to analyze and find patterns or c

My Earliest Memory

The earliest memory I can think of begins early in the morning when I was around 8. Walking threw one of the many home we had lived in late one night lessoning to the sounds of my parents arguing and yelling trying to keep my mind elsewhere. Stressed and upset to the sounds of anger coming from the other room I get ready to try and fall soundly to sleep so the stressful day filled with harsh words and ill-tempered people would end. I take a long steaming shower to try and wash the hurt I felt every time they argued away. I dress in my favorite pink fluffy pajamas and clime to the top of the bed me and my sister had shared and fall slowly into a deep sleep. I'm awakened a couple of times threw out the night by the deep roar of my father's voice. His voice was, and still is to this day, as deep and filled with anger as the devils must be. I'm awaken with a frightened jolt. I look out the window to estimate the time. It was early morning still dark and moist outside from the due of the
