The Ride of Paul Revere by Longfellow

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a man who from a young age had a love for literature, and later took a position in 1863 at Harvard (legallanguage.com, Paul Revere's Ride). Three years later Longfellow published his first collection of poems and many of his poems sported people conquering over affliction (poets.org, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow). Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wanted Paul Revere to get recognized for his bravery, perseverance and labor for his country's freedom, moreover his intention was not to write a historical account but to create a national icon through dramatizing Paul Revere's midnight ride (paul-revere-heritage.com, Myths and Facts of Revere's Midnight Ride). Longfellow became conscious of the fact that Paul Revere was willing to give his own life for his country. Longfellow believed that Paul Revere was truly a hero and that what he did for his country was very admirable. Because Longfellow looked up to Paul Revere, he wanted to spread the knowledge of what Revere achieved. Paul Revere warned the people from Boston to Philadelphia

Biography of Alessandro Volta

Born in 1745, the remarkable physicist, chemist, and electrical scientist, Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta, continued his consequential works and ideas until 1827 and even in following generations, as he would greatly influence the work and ideas of many upcoming thinkers and inventors. Volta originated from a small town in Italy, known as Como, Lombardy. He dedicated much of his life to his quest of knowledge: being homeschooled as a small child before attending a Jesuit Boarding school and eventually studying at Benzi Seminary. Volta's ambitious studies and ideas would prove him to be a critical thinker in the place of emerging technology, they would guide him to eventually become an effective communicator in his, as well as future societies, and they would ultimately demonstrate his independence as a researcher on an intellectual level. The 17th and 18th century was a time of new technology, holding great inventions and prominent ideas. Alessandro Volta's contribution

A Different Perspective of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Stevenson and Martin offer numerous parallels due to their shared interests in the portrayals of the Victorian gentlemen. However, due to their different identities, one a Victorian gentleman himself and the other a female modern writer, they present different standpoints on the same topic. The lives of the well-respected Victorian gentlemen in Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde imply hypocritical values and aspects of the society, manifested in the lack of women and lower classes. In contrast, Valerie Martin's adaptation, Mary Reilly, takes on this hypocrisy from an opposite approach, focusing primarily on women and the lower classes. By addressing these patriarchal features, Martin provides deeper insights of these gentlemen's lives, and thus unfolds the hypocrisy more extensively. Martin uncovers and criticizes the hypocrisy of the Victorian society by following Stevenson's course of events. In doing so, she better identifies and relates the parallels and thus

Birth Control and Intrauterine Devices

The IUD is a small, plastic T-shaped device. This device is either wrapped in copper or contains progestin. It can be effective from 5-12 years, and is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare professional. This method of birth control is considered a barrier and hormonal method because it blocks the fertilized egg from embedding in the uterus, and the progestin coating it contains may damage or kill sperm. Due to past problems with one type of IUD, it was withdrawn from the market in 1975. However there are two types that are still commonly used and shown to be safe and effective, within the U.S., Mirena and ParaGard. After insertion of the IUD, women can check to see if it is properly installed by feeling for the small plastic string that is tied to the end of it that is suspended through the cervix. This string is also used in the removal process. One commonly used IUD device is the Mirena. "As soon as Mirena is placed in your uterus by your healthcare provider, it starts releasing small amounts of the hormone levonorgestrel into your uterus to provide continuous birth control for as long as you want, for up to 5 years." Terrorism in the 21st Century

Terrorism has gained its root so much in the 21st century. This has been made so through radicalization and strong teaching of the Muslim faith to their youths who believe that those people who are not Muslims are pagans and therefore need to be engaged in 'jihad' or holy war. In addition to this, in this century, there are so many learned fellows who have failed to secure jobs and the only alternative solution that they have so far is to join Islamic terrorist groups. According to a television interview they had in the last two weeks, one terrorist, interviewed by the journalist who was twenty said that he joined the terrorists groups because of poverty and that his parents were unable to pay his high school fees (NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Countering Violent Extremism Among Youth to Prevent Terrorism and In Lombardi, 2015). In this century more than the past centuries, terrorism has become a reality, something that we cannot ignore. In the last decade alone, so many te

The Wicked Problems of British Cities

Introduction The idea of `wicked problems' (Rittel and Webber, 1973) is by no means new in terms of social issues in the UK, indeed it has long been recognised that there are a series of problems/issues which, like the poor, and despite the `best efforts' of government, always seem to be with us and appear to be almost impossible to resolve. The problems of Britain's cities fall into this category; if we look back over the Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries we find problems of poverty, unemployment, crime, etc, constantly reoccurring (see Steadman-Jones, 1976). However, at different times, the problems have been `thought', conceptualised and addressed in different ways. For instance over time the poor have been variously categorised as the cause of their own problems (i.e. the social pathology approach), the victims of wider forces (i.e. the structural approach) or a combination of the two; equally the distinction between the `deserving' and `undeserving' poor has constantly been

What's so Good About Google Glass?

I am at a party with a couple of friends eating and discussing social activities for the summer when suddenly a man walks up to me wearing a sophisticated but irregular looking glass and a broad smile saying "Hello Yinbra". This irregular looking glass is a wearable technology known as the google glass or simply 'glass'. I had a confused face on and promptly asked "have we met?" and he replies, "not officially". He got my name from a friend of his at the party, but was able to call me out by my Instagram user name after a quick search using his glass within a few minutes. I immediately felt unease at this party and with this discovery as I imagined anyone else would. Technology in this age makes things easier for us but the google glass poses a big problem because it threatens individual privacy, causes digital dementia, and raises concerns in affecting social interactions. The Google glass has a camera that allows the user to take pictures

Intellectual Property Laws and the Internet

Introduction It is with no doubts that the internet has brought a revolution in the storage as well as the sharing of information. However, this has posed a great challenge to the protection of intellectual property as it is becoming difficult to use the traditional laws guiding the use of it. Intellectual property refers to any authentic creative work that takes a tangible form that is protected by the law (Bessen, & Maskin 2004). Abstract Intellectual property involves industrial designs, scientific discoveries, trademarks, commercial names, designations, artistic, literary and scientific work, as well as others. This paper explores how the enactment of corporate policy by the individual organization will help in the protection of intellectual property rights. Discussion To emphasize the need to have corporate policies, I will use a hypothetical scenario of the RIAA standing for the Recording Industry Association of America and how its efforts to protect the music as a work of art

The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey

This essay will review "The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey. As the title suggests, the book is a how-to type of book on changing the way you budget your money, spend your money, and invest your money to be successful. I chose this book out of the three because I believe this is an area that could benefit me. Ramsey really breaks it down into steps on how to makeover your finances. The format of the book is built into 7 steps that Ramsey explains one by one that will lead you to financial success. His suggestion is to go step by step, not going onto the next step until that step is complete. One of the biggest tips he gives is to be honest with yourself, stating, "If I can control the guy in the mirror, I can be skinny and rich." His steps are as follows. Number one is to save a $1,000 emergency fund. Number two is to eliminate all debt except for house payment. Number three is to save a 3-6 month emergency fund saving. Number four is to save 15% of gr

The Color of Water by James McBride

In my opinion the most significant event that transpires during chapters 13-19, occurs in chapter 14 when James is sent to live with his sister in Louisville, Kentucky. His time there is a crucial turning point for James because he stands on the precipice of ruining his life at this point of his story, and his time in Louisville allows him to reflect and change course. Importantly, an old southern alcoholic named Chicken Man is instrumental to James's understanding that James's recent turn towards crime, drugs, and skipping school will inevitably lead him to failure. Chicken Man is a stark reflection of who James will become if he continues down the road he is currently on, and thus James's conversations with Chicken Man coupled with his overall time in Louisville become one of the most influential periods of James's youth. James adds this story to his novel because it is vital to his personal growth. During James's delinquent phase, James feels resistant to failure and this causes him to behave thoughtles

Symbolism in Shirley Jackson's The Lottery

Making a resolution through majority voting is democratic, but does it mean the result must be correct? The short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson was published in 1948, three years after ending the World War II. It's like a strong wind triggered a flurry in the society at once. The story is about the people of a small town who hold an annual civil activity - the lottery for the sake of the bumper harvest, and the prize of the winner of the lottery is to be hit until death by stoning. Jackson uses the chronological writing technique with an objective perspective to reveal that the relationships among the family members and the whole people in the town are indifference, cold-blooded because of the blind obedience and lack ing of a rational and critical thinking. Although Jackson writes the story in plain language, a few of significant symbolic signs, such as three numbers, the stones and the black box of being used in the lottery activity, and the names of three people throughout

The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber

Ernest Hemingway uses characterization in The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber to address the theme of gender roles. The Macomber couple disregards the roles they're supposed to play, causing their marriage to be unstable. The struggle for power between the couple and their paths to accepting their roles in society is the driving force in this story, giving Hemingway ample opportunity to critique how gender roles have changed over time. Margot Macomber uses aggression and pride to control her husband, but she is forced to accept her role a woman as the story progresses. Margot mainly uses aggressive behavior to control her husband, Francis Macomber, in her relationship. She uses insults, passive-aggressive behaviors, and sex to control Francis and keep him from challenging her behavior. Margot is capable of acting in a way even Robert Wilson would approve of, but she chooses not to as she desires power. We first see this duality in an early scene where Margot leaves to cry after

Fort Sumter and the Civil War

The Civil War may have been one of the most memorable wars fought to date, more than 600,000 soldiers died from combat, accident, starvation, and disease during the Civil War.1 This was the only war to be fought on American soil by Americans. It would be an understatement to say that it was a tragic event in history. Shots fired on April 12th, 1861 that started the Civil War and its devastation, took place at what would come to be known as The Battle of Fort Sumter, in the Charleston Harbor. This was a big turning point for the United States of America. What Was Fort Sumter? Fort Sumter was one of the four military posts within the seceded states that were still held by U.S. forces.2 Fort Sumter is located on a man-made island at the mouth of the harbor in Charleston, South Carolina. The fort itself was designed as part of an elaborate coastal defense system put in place after the War of 1812.3 This fortress was seen as a symbol for national strength by both the north and south. If y

Ralph Lauren Marketing Plan

In 1968, Ralph Lauren (Born Ralph Lifchitz) founded the company Polo Fashions, a company that would later expand its market, and is among one of the top designer brands in the world today. Polo Ralph Lauren's key success factors derive from the company's powerful identity. It is notorious for it preppy American style in the designer world, but it is also luxurious, elegant and thrives to always be a classic. It appeals to a wide range of consumers, even if a person doesn't wear Polo they are at least familiar with what it is. The way the company markets itself is also a big part of its success. For a company that started out less than 50 years ago, from making just ties to expanding its market to men's wear, women's wear, children clothing, home furnishing and even dog clothing, one can conclude it has done a very good job in marketing itself. Today Polo's target market is the upper middle class around the world. One of Polo Ralph Lauren's greatest strengths is its marketing strategy

Loyalty and Patriotism in Great Britain

After the establishment of the American colonies, the settlers, the majority of whom were English, maintained their loyalty to England as they flourished in the new land. Once Great Britain realized the significant financial gain created by the colonies, it acted hastily to procure its newfound source of income. Several incidents depict a change in overall loyalty and patriotism in terms of the colonists' identity and sentiment between 1760-1776. During this time the colonists, in their attempts to be recognized by Great Britain as separate, were rebuffed by the Crown. Prior to the French and Indian War the colonies, at this time, considered themselves loyal English subjects and the cartoon posted in the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1754, demonstrates the loyalty and unity of the colonies. In the political cartoon, "JOIN, or DIE" Benjamin Franklin is attempting to persuade colonists to unite in the battle against the French and fight beside England rather than remain independen

Marijuana - Cannabis Sativa

"In strict medical terms marijuana is far safer than many foods we consume. It is physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to induce death. Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man," states Francis Young (Gottfried). Many people believe that the use of marijuana is harmful and even deadly but it has been proven otherwise. Its use has many benefits such as medical cures for diseases such as AIDS and PTSD. Whether or not marijuana should be legalized is a highly controversial issue in the United States, and will likely continue to be so for many years to come. Scientifically known as Cannabis Sativa, marijuana is a hemp plant (Marijuana). There have been more than 5,000 years of recorded history of use but the earliest known use was in China and Central Asia around 3000 B.C. In North America, Native Americans used the plant for religious ceremonies, healing and to calm the nerves. The hemp plant eventually became

The Personality of Macbeth

The character of Macbeth is a progressive one. As the play proceeds, his good qualities disappear while the evil become more and more developed. His encounters with the witches show the degradation in his personality. At the beginning, Macbeth is shown as strong character with a strong personality. "For brave Macbeth-well he deserves that name- disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel, which smoked with bloody execution, like valor's minion carved out his passage till he faced the slave; which ne'er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, till he unseamed him from the nave to th' chops, And fixed his head upon our battlements" (1.2.16-23). But when he first met the witches, he shows that weak predisposition that characterizes him in the first part of the play. "It is too full o' t

Depression and the Natural Treatment Paradigm

"Depression affects all people regardless of age, geographic location, demographic, or social position." Depression is like a massive black hole – a portion in space having a density and gravitational force so extraordinary that if we are being absorbed in its swirling vortex, we can never seem to evade it. We have all had times wherein we get drawn into this downward spiral of depression. What we need is something that can hoist us out of the infinite vortex that we are in. Fortunately, there are various natural treatments for depression, such as exercising, challenging negative thoughts, and taking on responsibility. By simply switching the way we perceive or do things, we can neutralize the destructive effects imposed by depression. Although depression is considered a mental disease, physical activities may help us relieve or ease depression. When we exercise, our b

Love in Shakespeare's Sonnets

In poems there are 3 more popular theme concepts that writers used to express a point. These three themes being Love, Death, and Time. The theme Love can be interpreted in various ways and can be linked to Time and Death. For example, the love for time and how important it is to a specific person/thing or how love can lead to death of someone or something. Around the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century men usually wrote poems dealing with love between two people. These two people either loving each other or how their love has disappeared. Within these poems writers sometimes uses aspects of nature or the world to drive their point. William Shakespeare was a master at incorporating love in his sonnets. I will discuss the theme concept of Love in "Sonnet 18", "Sonnet 116", and "Sonnet 109." In the "Sonnet 18" the speaker uses love in a sense of a person describing the long lasting beauty in another person, perhaps their significant other. The

Piracy Off the Horn of Africa

Piracy was once associated with times past, when wooden sailing ships scaled the seven seas targeting trading vessels to secure their treasure. The 1724 book by Charles Johnson, A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates, forged the popular stereotype of peg-legged and eye-patched wearing pirates that has been mined over the years by artists such as Johnny Depp in the Hollywood blockbuster, Pirates of the Caribbean. Before a time of modern maritime technology and globalization piracy was a common crime. With the rise of nation states, piracy was kept in check by powerful Dutch and English fleets composed of fast sailing ships and, eventually, steam- powered vessels. Throughout the twentieth century t World Wars and a Cold War between the US and Soviet Russia meant that the seas were occupied by vast amounts of naval vessels dominating the oceans portraying a show of power. This of course deterred acts of piracy and kept it to an absolute minimum. Ho

Language and Communication

Language is a significant aspect that plays an important role in bringing the world together. Over the years, worldwide and in all social classes in most communities, there is always a common language of communication between peoples. Lingua Franca means " A language that is adopted as a common language between speakers whose native languages are different." (oxford dictionary online virgin) The use of a Lingua Franca seems to be a very common phenomenon, it was used for communication by merchants and sailors all around the Mediterranean. Linguists classify the Lingua Franca as one of the most important things that may play an important role in changing the world. David Crystal (2004:1) says: "The year 2000 marked the end of a decade of linguistic revolution. The new century must deal with its consequences". In this paper I will talk about the importance of Lingua Franca language, the history of language, Lingua Franca language positives and negatives.. Since the early c

Major Characters in Billy Budd, Sailor

There are three main characters in Herman Melville's Billy Budd, Sailor: Billy Budd, John Claggart, and Captain Vere. The first two are depicted as a pair of opposites, for one is innocent, simple and good, while the other is intelligent but hypocritical and evil. Captain Vere is a more complex character, and much harder to be defined or stereotyped. In other words, the interpretation of him may vary from reader to reader. In the story, Billy Budd is such an embodiment of beauty and purity as to be compared to Christ or sinless Adam. When he works in a merchant's ship, he is the peacemaker among the untamed sailors. When he serves in the warship, in Captain Vere's eyes he is "such a fine specimen of the genus homo, who in the nude might have posed for a statue of young Adam before the Fall" (Melville, P2332). "Billy in many respects was little more than a sort of upright barbarian, much such perhaps as Adam presumably might have been ere the urbane Serpent wriggled himself into his company."(Melville, P2307) Moreover, just as innocent as Ad

The Reign of Maximillian Robespierre

Maximillian Robespierre was an important figure who played a major role during the course of the French Revolution. Robespierre strived for ''a peaceful enjoyment of liberty and equality''as he defended the third estate during the period of social upheaval, which upraised his political role during the reign of terror in 1793 to 1794. Robespierre's role ended when he was guillotined as a result of the bloodbath he had led France into. Despite being a radical, Robespierre played a significant political role during the French Revolution and reign of terror, leaving a legacy of social justice for the Third Estate after his execution in 1794. Robespierre was appointed First Deputy for Paris to the National Convention in 1793, which increased his power during the French revolution. Robespierre executed the king in 1793, stating that 'Louis must die in order for the Revolution to live' as he believed Louis was the symbol of the aristocrats expansion. This shows that Robespierre's role was to protect the revolut

Generation Y is Self-Depressed

Generations, or eras, are groups of individuals close to age and our Generation, which became known as Generation Y or the Millennials, often faces the same problems. Without us even noticing, they are greatly affecting our own thoughts, feelings, behavior, health and personalities, specifically self-depression. Self-depression could put our own health at stake depending on how we are valued and treated. In order to eliminate the problem of self-depression, it is necessary to take an action quickly. The action that must be taken as the solution are identified as treatments. Treatments that we don't realize already exist and are simple, such as acceptance, isolation and consultation. The lack of moving forward to the following step will cause further growth of the problem. We, Generation Y, tend to easily become affected by those around us, which can change us completely without us noticing. "Depression is oddly a commonplace in today's society." Cigarettes and Advertising

Cigarette advertisements were everywhere in the 1950s through the 1970s and today you do not see any advertisements for cigarettes. In the 50s, 60s, and early 70s, you would see cigarette advertisements on television, magazines, billboards, and tobacco companies would also sponsor entire shows. When the truth began to come out about how dangerous cigarette smoke was, advertisers changed how they advertised their cigarettes. From there, some restrictions were put on the advertisements of tobacco. This again changed and restricted on what advertisers could do. Before I go into the advertisements of cigarettes, I will discuss how smoking overall changed before and after the war. Before WWI, there was a strong anti-smoking movement in the United States. Cigarettes were looked at as a mark of deviancy. Thirteen states prohibited the sale of cigarettes, and many more states, municipalities and private businesses passed various restrictions on their sale and use. 1 This all changed after WWI
