Euthanasia and the Right to Die

The Right to Die Euthanasia is defined as the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma. Also known as mercy killings and physician-assisted suicide, it is currently legal in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and two American states, Oregon and Washington. There are three types of euthanasia. They are voluntary euthanasia, involuntary euthanasia, and non-voluntary euthanasia. Whether or not euthanasia is moral is a subject that is often debated and it is very controversial. There are many things that have to be considered in determining whether or not euthanasia should be practiced. For example, many people feel that it is completely immoral and vile because they believe that everyone should die naturally. Also, people who are religious also believe that a person should not be able to decide when they are to leave this world. While this may be true, it is also evident that certain sick people do not have a quality o

Othello - The Tragic Hero

All throughout reading Shakespeare's Othello, I came to realization about the main character himself. By that, I couldn't help but distinguish the type of character Othello was. I consider him as a "tragic" hero for a number of reasons.  It was very evident as to why I make this claim. As he also happens to fit all of the criteria of a tragic hero. All from a list that was compiled by the great Aristotle, one that was implemented throughout the course of his works as well. What exactly contributes to Othello's tragic heroism? He was depicted as having a "noble" stature, along with a high position of authority within his culture. Since he was a General/Commander of the armed forces within Venice, Italy; later on, he was promoted to Governor. Othello was also great, but was somewhat far from perfect. Which in turn, distinguishes a "fatal" flaw of his, which was his lack of self esteem; moreover, leading to his downfall. In summary, I consider Othello as a tragic hero because he was also very self

The Character Attributes of Miss Emily

In many small Southern Towns, during the late eighteen hundreds to early nineteen hundreds, people like to gossip since there is not a lot to do for fun. Their source of entertainment is the word around town. In the southern gothic story, "A Rose for Emily," a member or members of the community tell the story of the sympathetic Miss Emily Grierson. A slender young figure raised by her father, who sheltered her from all the men who tried to court her, she finds herself alone after his death until one northerner by the name of Homer Barron reaches their town, Jefferson. The author portrays her as sympathetic because of her fear of loneliness. She falls in love with this man but as she sees that he is slipping away she poisons him because of her fear of loneliness. This action also shows her stubbornness and her aversion to change. The purpose of this paper is to investigate Miss Emily's character and her motives. In William Faulkner's short story, "A Rose for Emily",

Traditional African Religion

Religion is the most significant influence in the life of most Africans; yet, its key principles are too often unfamiliar to foreigners (Awolalu, 1976). This leads to considerable misunderstanding of the African worldview and beliefs. As religion is part of life for most African's, it cannot be studied by itself (Awolalu, 1976). To efficiently study the African Traditional Religion (ATR), one must also study the people who practice this religion. ATR is the original religious belief and practice of the Africans. Many of the World Religions are more known than ATR in many parts of Africa (Adedeji, 2012) The Africans are known to be intensely religious people. Deep within the being of every African, is a feeling of an irresistible religious imperative. Religion makes the most absolute claim in the life, hopes and aspirations, fears and joys of the average African person (Ikwuagwu, 2007). ATR has served from the beginning as the fundamental source for the native in Africa to understand t

Methods to Reduce Second Language Learning Anxiety

The anxiety in learning second language can be reduced by the teachers and the students by themselves. Firstly, the teacher may conduct the lessons with creativity. Besides, environment is another very important aspect to reduce the students' anxiety. Teachers need to pay attention to the students' learning rate and their different cultural background. Teacher should relate the teaching plan with updated issues discussed in the society to attract the students' attention and the students can remember what the teacher taught easily. On the other hand round, the student also need to put in some effort to reduce their anxiety in learning second language. They need to lower their anxiety so that they can improve by persuading themselves not to afraid to speak in front of people. They also can look straight into teacher's eyes to get some support from the teacher. A peer interaction is very important too because the students may learning from each other and they will improve together. Worde

Archeological Site - Sutton Hoo

The Sutton Hoo ship burial is a historical site found south-east Suffolk, Europe. The site was revealed to be the entombment place of a large crowd of Anglo-Saxon people. The Anglo-Saxons were a group of people including Germanic Tribes who voyaged to reside in Great Britain from the 5th century onwards. In the ship itself, many archaeologists and historians were able to recover artifacts such as: jewelry, armor, remains of soldiers and their horses along with other things including gold coins and priceless processions of what was believed to belong to the deceased. The site of Sutton Hoo involves a collection of at least fourteen funeral mounds across the vast landscape. What was most interesting about the discovery of these mounds were what lied beneath the largest embankment. Edith May Pretty, the original land owner and caretaker of Sutton Hoo at the time of 1939, believed that the mounds on her property had a mysterious connection with the ghosts of soldiers and important men she

The Persistence of Poverty

Local Poverty The imposition of the national tariffs on trade and business ventures in a country contributes to high rates of poverty in a country. Milanovic explains that the reduction of national tariffs in a country would help improve the development state in a country (Milanovic 667). The national tariffs make help a country raise the income, but high interests discourage investors thus hinders growth and development of a country. Research proves that most countries with high taxation rates and tariffs have fewer development projects and have high numbers of unemployment. Poverty has spread across the world, and it hinders the development of the country unless there are measures to help counter the factors that lead to the persistent state of poverty. The high tariffs make it difficult for the local currency to pick up against the other international currencies. For instance, the American dollars and the United Kingdom pound appear as the constant currency across the world. A poor

The Next Big Thing -The Space Elevator

Arthur C. Clarke once famously said that we will build a space elevator 10 years after they stop laughing. (Graham) Though the space elevator is still being experimented on, there are possibility today with the discovery of carbon nanotubes that humans will one day travel to space using an elevator. Though this topic has been a debatable one to weather the space elevator will be safer to travel with due to some complications such as the length of carbon nanotubes which might be a problem to combine. The fact still remains that a space elevator should be built because it will be cheaper and more accessible than a rocket, it will help increase the amount of people going to space, and it will widen our knowledge about space. As compared to traveling with a rocket to space, a space elevator will be a better alternative because it is cheaper and it is also accessible. One of the problems people had with

Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey

The novel Jasper Jones written by Craig Silvey and published in 2009, was set in a country town of Western Australia in the summer of 1965. The setting was influenced by novels that Silvey had read as a youth. This is why many features of the novel have similarities to novels such as TKAMB and TAOHF. Silvey develops the idea of character identity through specific characters such as Charlie, Jasper Jones, Jeffrey and the women in society. By using context and techniques, Silvey shows how a characters racial background or social status may impact on their acceptance in society. These people are known as the 'outsiders' or 'the other'. There are many characters that are portrayed as 'the other' in the novel. Each one of these characters are constructed to stand out from the normality of the people of Corrigan. In order to fit in one must portray the characteristics of having power, having European ancestry (Caucasian race), have a passion for sport or being a dominant male. If anyone d

The Magna Carter and Canada

The Magna Carter is now recognized as one of the most important documents in the development of democracy, some of it beliefs are still prominent in a free society focusing on Canada, although formed over 800 years ago. Some of it's clause that will be analyzed further are decisions making, bribery and rights for citizens and the philosophy of innocent until proven guilty. "No scrutage [tax] shall be imposed except by the concept of the common council". This law once analyzed translates to the common council deciding together if a law should be passed, the law cannot be passed without the common council being aware of the decision. This rule is important in a free society focusing on Canada because, it involves the insights of multiple people to come to the conclusion of a decision. This method prevents the possibility of bad decisions being made, seeing as decisions are reviewed by multiple people before it becomes a law. It is also very important to the Canadian society because it reduces conflicts from breaking out since most peo

A Guide to Overcoming Guilt

"In life man commits himself and draws his own portrait, outside of which there is nothing...but on the other hand, it helps people to understand that reality alone counts, and that dreams, expectations and hopes only serve to define a man as a broken dream, aborted hopes, and futile expectations" (Sartre). Dom, the main character of Inception, escapes the futile world of dreams and learns to overcome his guilt. The film Inception, written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan, was heavily influenced by the ideas that appeared in films such as The Matrix, and one of Nolan's earlier films, Memento. These movies were all focused on the basis that the world may not be real. Inception has often been viewed as a postmodern film with existentialist principles. The film is centered around Dominic Cobb, a contractor who performs jobs of extracting information from high value targets through the subject's dreams. Dom is a wanted man in the United States for supposedly having killed his wife. He is forced to leave his children to travel around the world performing extraction jobs and running away from the government. However, his guilt for the death of

The Impact of Climate Change

In the last century, there was an increase about 0.6 degrees in the average temperature. According to the UN group on climate change, the average temperature will rise by between 1.4 and 5.8 degrees C by the 2100. (Black., para.A) Climate, which is the average weather like seasonal extremes, variation, is in control of earth's energy and its atmosphere, is actually caused by both human activities and natural events. Obviously, it can affect ecosystems, the agricultural, and the spread of disease. (Black, para. C) With the effects climate change, it finally results in global warming and green house effects. This essay will discuss the causes and effects of climate change, then it will suggest solutions to to solve this problem. According to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPPC), climate change was caused by human activities significantly, and these can even cause irreversible effects to earth. (Hamburg, 2009, p.186-187) For example, burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, na

Canada's Involvement in the Afghanistan War

Most of the world can recall the instant they saw the two "air jacked" airplanes crash simultaneously into the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001; where they were, what emotions they felt and how they reacted to these inhuman acts. What is as interesting is how to explain certain State's reasoning towards these attacks, and how they reacted afterwards. Soon after the attacks, the Bush government closely turned their heads to "Al Qaeda, a terrorist group led by Osama Bin Laden which had previously shown much discontent from not only the United States, but western ideologies in general. "Western ideologies" which are characterized as being very democratic with capitalist- based economies, led to much disagreement upon the Muslim- extremist community long before the attacks upon the Twin Towers in New York (which led to 2974 casualties). Al Qaeda is a terrorist organization which depicts democracy and western ideas as being a "poison" towards t

Buddhism and Rights for Women

"Some women are indeed better (than men). Bring her up, O Lord of men " (buddhistvihara.com) Espoused by Siddhartha Gautama, Buddha, the resulting belief system, Buddhism, represented a step forward for the status of women in Indian Society. To understand the advances for women, a brief overview of the rights of females prior to Buddhism, the teachings of Buddha, and historical examples of enlightened women all focus to understand how the status of Indian women progressed. Prior to Buddhism in the Indian culture, women were considered significantly inferior to men physically, and mentally as well as deemed a possession. Occupied continually with domestic chores and child raising duties, women were considered sinful if not kept busy. Ultimately, a woman's occupation was to produce a male heir and if not, multiple wives could replace her or she could be forced out of her home. In terms of religious duties, she could not worship alone and only could "reach heaven through absolute obedience to her husband." (buddhanet.net) What

Tragic Heroes in Literature

English 1A 6326 22nd July 2015 Flaws Are Inevitable A hero is held to high standards and is typically a man who is admired or idealized for courage but, a good hero must also have a personal impediment , a few overarching mistakes that humanizes and develops compassion for the character inside the audience. However, these shortcomings or flaws make others perceive him as a tragic hero. A good hero becomes a tragic hero when he lets these flaws push him to make a mistake .So a tragic hero is a character looked up to by his or her audience, but eventually commits an action or makes a mistake that eventually leads to his or her defeat. All humans have struggles. Every person's strongest assets are also their greatest liabilities. Lex Salisbury, the CEO of Lowry Park from the book Zoo Story: life in the garden of the captives by Thomas French, has good intentions for the zoo but his lack of compassion on his co-workers and,

Opera Review - Barbiere di Siviglia

The Metropolitan Opera's presentation of Gioachino Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia employed the use of a stage extension that surrounded the orchestra pit. This allowed the actors a larger area in which to move. It also allowed the actors to get closer to the audience. The stage extension made scenes such as when Dr. Bartolo and Don Basilio took a walk to plot against Count Almaviva and Figaro more believable, as though they were strolling in the garden. When the performers were on the extended stage it separated them from the action on the main stage. This gave the production greater depth and added to the enjoyment of the opera. Il Barbiere di Siviglia, a fast paced comedy, benefitted from the energy of the performers. Each actor embodied their character and brought it to life, projecting the essence to the audience. Members of the cast played off each other building the overall energy on stage. This was even true of the mute character of the sleepy manservant who the rest of the cast had to step over a

Chemical Compounds and Bonding

Pure chemical substances are classified as ionic, metallic, covalent molecular and covalent network. In this essay I will describe the nature of each bonding present in these different types of substances and use this to explain the physical properties they exhibit and their structures. Ionic compounds are compounds that are composed of positive and negative ions. An ionic compound is a chemical compound in which ions are held together in a lattice structure by ionic bonds. Usually, the positively charged portion consists of metal (cations) and the negatively charged portion is an (anion) or polyatomic ion. Ions in ionic compounds are held together by the electrostatic forces between oppositely charged bodies. The positive and negative ions in these compounds are thought to be arranged in an orderly three-dimensional lattice. For example, the structure of sodium chloride is shown. In the lattice, each positive sodium ion is surrounded by six negative chloride ions and each negative c

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Abstract As a product of science, Henrietta Lacks (HeLa) became immortalized. Constantly growing and multiplying, HeLa cells gave scientist the ability to study the intricacies of how cells work. One of the greatest event in science history was a result from the greatest maladies of all illnesses, cancer. In 1951, a mother of six children was admitted into the prestigious John Hopkins hospital. China and Renewable Energy

It seems one of the main drivers pushing China to excel in renewable energy is their current state of pollution. According to the article "Wind power generation in China: Understanding the mismatch between capacity and generation" by Mian Yang and others, China is the biggest emitter of CO2 in the world. This article also states that China used 3.25 billion tons of coal in 2010. This article argues that the high amounts of pollution are a main factor of encouragement to invent renewable energy. The article "Environmental Health Perspectives" by Justin Remais and Junfeng Zhang argues the same thing stating that "China's dependence on coal for nearly 70% of its energy supply contributes more than a quarter of global emissions of inorganic mercury." The article then goes on to explain that China is "investing heavily to reduce its reliance on coal and other fossil fuels." Another article that claims the environme

Quebec Separatism - Key to Isolation from Canada

Quebec has many benefits, such as living in a multicultural society, healthcare and pension plans, and many recreation, community and touristic services. However, Quebec, Canada's only official French speaking province, has brought many controversies in its own government, but also in Canada's government. The biggest issues in Quebec are the continuous rivalries of the English and French languages, but also, the rivalries between the political parties. These rivalries brought the issue of Quebec separatism into place: an issue that is still present in our society. In the following paragraphs, the characteristics of separatism will be given, as well as an analysis and description of Quebec separatism and the reasons for which it is still an issue in society nowadays. First off, the definition and the characteristics of the term "separatism" will be given in order to have a better understanding of Quebec separatism. Separatism refers to the justification of separation or disa

Diversity and Gender Identity

Up until the last few decades a person's gender was defined by "the state of being male or female" (Webster). Even in the cases such as hermaphrodites there was no distinction a sex was chosen and so therefore that child became one sex or the other (Britannica). Butler defines gender "an identity instituted through a stylized repetition of acts"--a performance from which social constructs are formed" (Butler). A person's identity should not be defined by their biological sex but rather by what they choose to be. However this idea is not a readily accepted by mainstream society. Butler believes that gender is not a conscious choice and "neither is it imposed or inscribed upon the individual, as some post-structuralist displacements of the subject would content". Many consider the idea of choosing a gender or not identifying to a specific type goes against their belief system. Additionally others find that there has to be some base line to determine what we are and ar
