The Uprising of Police Brutality

From April 2009 to June 2010, 23.3% of the 2,541 reports of police misconduct were only police brutality, and 13% of the police brutality reports were fatalities (Freeman, 2011). Police brutality, also known as police use of excessive force, is different from reasonable force. Police brutality, an unnecessary force, is a civil right violation, where police officers beat people up and abuse victims' human rights. But in a society based on orders of law, police officers are given the authority to use force, a necessary force, in precise situations, and this force is reasonable force. Excessive use of force is starting to increase year after year. Starting from mid 2010, statistics show that out of 5, 986 reports of police brutality, 382 resulted in death, and the majority of these individuals have been African Americans (Thomas, n.d. para.1). This means that police brutality excessively target the minority groups in a society such as African Americans. Also, police use excessive force on

Pericles and Athenian Democracy

When looking at Athenian culture, most people choose to say Pericles is the founder and father of democracy. But on the contrary, when looking at the facts, one can come to a different conclusion. Pericles, Solon, and Cleisthenes all deserve the title "Father of Democracy." Although Pericles did create what today can be identified as a democracy, that does not mean he deserves full credit. Before Pericles came, the Athenian leaders Solon, (594-593 BCE) Pisistratus, (546 BCE) and Cleisthenes (507 BCE) laid the groundwork that served as the foundation for Pericles' well known democracy. However, Pisistratus does not truly deserve the title "Father of Democracy" due to some of his actions; or better yet, lack of actions as leader (Cutrone). What qualifies one to be called the "Father of Democracy?" A father is usually considered the head of a family and the main leader, which in some cases, makes Pericles the father. However, the entire reason that makes a

Closed and Open Adoptions

The foundation of the adoption system is a reflection of how the world is evolving today. Years ago, adoption was mostly all closed, with few open adoption families. Nowadays, open adoption is becoming popular. The choice of open adoption versus closed adoption is one of the most challenging decision birth parents can make. In both processes of adoption, an agreement is created with the details of the terms and conditions so both the birth and adoptive parents are able to receive and keep them. An ongoing debate among states and the United States legislations is trying to compromise on these two types methods and whether or not it is in their power to interfere. Open adoption is the best adoption method because if a child gets sick, diagnosing the illness is easier, and the adoptee is able to communicate with his or her birth parents so he or she may understand the reasoning behind the adoption; therefore, the adoptee's best interests are considered. Open adoption is the method where

Current News Report Critique

My news critique is about a story that reported on an attempted rape victim in Huntsville, Alabama. The victim, Kelly Dodson, was interviewed on July 28, 2010, by Elizabeth Gentle, a reporter for NBC affiliate WAFF-48 News. The purpose of the story was to inform local citizens about the tragedy that happened in their community. This report was meant to inform others of the attempted rape in order to establish awareness amongst citizens. Throughout this critique, I will be speaking on both the good and bad aspects of the news report. I will first discuss the elements that I felt could have been better or different. The news report started with an establishing shot of reporter Elizabeth Gentle. The shot was centered, but Gentle was more off to the left, which made the shot more unbalanced. I would have made the shot tighter, which would have better positioned her within the frame.

Child Labor in a Modern Age

In America the typical person goes shopping for clothes for a specific brand and sometimes a specific kind of style. Generally we just look at the brand and what size the piece of clothing is. Occasionally we will look to see where it is made. Most of the time the clothing is made in poor countries with a lot of poverty. What most people don't realize is that the some of the clothing they wear was made by children working in hazardous conditions who are forced to work to support their families. In the world today there are many countries that have this problem. I chose to focus on India because it is has the highest number of child laborers in the world. The governments of India and other countries like China and Pakistan that have this problem should work together to impose penalties against the companies who are violating child labor laws. There are many countries that have factories where there are children working illegally for low wages. The world leader in child labor is India,

Presenting Food to Young Children

In this essay it is going to describe the main aspects which have to be taken into consideration when presenting foods to young children. When food is presented to young children at mealtimes it can either be an enjoyable, relaxed, social occasion; which is how mealtimes should be to encourage children into learning both routine and table manners. Or sometimes mealtimes can become a time that is extremely stressful for both the parents and the children and can also be fulfilled with temper tantrums, family arguments and negative feelings. It is important that food is presented correctly to young children, as there are many educational, social and physical skills learnt throughout mealtimes of which children will use during the future. The presentation of food to young children is something which needs considering as the presentation of foods to children is the decision of whether they decide to eat it or leave it. If their plate of food has a variety of colours and different textures

Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi

Developing one's identity is a huge topic, which is a complex thing depending on many factors. However, no matter what ways people used to develop their identity, that process is always highly related with learning and interpreting. Azar Nafisi, the author of the book "Reading Lolita in Tehran", interpreted the story of Lolita through her own special perspective to develop her own identity. Since the certain situation in Tehran, many things were forbidden by government and school, like the western literature, Nafisi and her students gathered secretly on every Thursday to read and talk about western literature. She gave the special meaning to the story of Lolita from her own identity. Another author, Jonathan Lethem, he showed his unique perspective about plagiarism in his article "The Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism." He believes that plagiarism is not a simple term, but can be different under different situations. Lethem gave readers an idea that contexts are importa

The Happiness Advantage

In The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor discusses that sometimes common sense is not always common practice. Mr. Achor, who gives speeches at fortune 500 companies, has had someone tell him that being happy is common sense and you do not need to change your ways to be happy. As it turns out, that person was the least happy person at that company. One of Mr. Achor's biggest points is "..the more you believe in your own ability to succeed the more likely it is that you will." Although, not all people can contain the ability to believe that they will succeed. In The Price of Privilege by Madeline Levine,Tyler clearly does not possess this ability. Daniel Pink discusses in his novel Drive that human motivations are not always as clear as we may think they are. Pink says that we do not always motivate ourselves to be happy, yet we are motivated by incentives such as money. Also, Sir Ken Robinson, author of The Element shows us how incredibly important it is to find what our passio

Phenylketonuria Symptoms and Treatment

Phenylketonuria, otherwise known as PKU, is an inherited rare disorder that causes a buildup of the amino acid phenylalanine in the body. PKU is caused by a defect in the gene that usually breaks down phenylalanine (Orphanet). A dangerous build up of of phenylalanine can occur when a person with PKU eats foods high in protein. This can lead to serious medical problems (mayo). There are certain tests and techniques used to diagnose Phenylketonuria. People who inherit this disease exhibit certain symptoms and should be treated accordingly. Phenylketonuria is an autosomal recessive trait. This means both the mother and father must have and pass on the defected gene for a child to inherit it. It is possible for a parent to be a carrier of the gene, but not have the disease. The good news is if only one parents has the gene it cannot be passed on to a child (Patel). Babies born with PKU do not immediately exhibit symptoms. Symptoms will begin to appear after a few months if the child is not treated. Some symptoms include mental and social delays, psychiatric disorders, poor bone strength, a smaller head size, skin rashes, hyperactivity, and seizures (mayo). Because phenylalanine pl

Piaget and Vygotsky - Child Development

Child development occurs in discrete stages with a range of ages from birth to adulthood. Development considers many interrelated aspects of developmental change such as language and cognitive ability, motor skills and emotional development and interaction with family members and peers (Cairns, 1998). Jeane Piaget and Vygotsky's theories with emphasize child development. Piaget's theory is about the mechanisms of intellectual development and the acquisition of knowledge (Boden, 1994) whereas Vygotsky's theory is focused on how culture influences development through language and social and material structure of society (Kozulin, 1990). Jean Piaget's theory is well known of the cognitive development which is also called an "ages and stages" theory because he found out the stages that the infant and child go through to develop. The first stage is sensorimotor which takes place from birth to two years when the infants are born with only some basic reflexes which means they learn to manag

Preparing for an Ebola Outbreak

Ebola causes headaches, feelings of nausea and is very difficult to get rid of. Is it a virus or a free U2 album? Just a little humor on a serious issue facing our country on a daily basis. Ebola is a virus that causes an acute, serious illness which is often fatal if untreated. It appeared first in 1976 with two cases in Africa near the Ebola River where is first received its name (WHO). The outbreak that has recently occurred is the largest outbreak in African history since the previous Ebola outbreak of 1976. Ebola is transmitted from wild animals to human, and then from human to human contact. It is thought that the virus comes from fruit bats. Ebola is passed through humans by blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids. 9,000 people in Africa have died from this deadly virus, with 18,000 cases actively being assessed and about 12,000 dead or dying, and it is slowly finding its way into the United States (Gallinger). This is happening because doctors and nurses and people

Martin Luther King Jr. and Segregation

America proclaimed the idea of, "all men are equal," in the Constitution. "All men," however did not include African Americans. Ever since the Civil War, they were strongly discriminated against and had limited freedoms compared to white people. Martin Luther King Jr. was a social activist leader leading the Civil Rights Movement. His well-known letter, "The Letter From Birmingham Jail, 16 April 1963," was written to inform the clergyman regarding the issue of discrimination in Birmingham, Alabama. He used the three persuasive techniques, logo, patho, and etho to vindicated his views on racial discrimination, which has inspired many African Americans to fight for their autonomy with non- violent protest. Martin Luther King Jr. used etho, an ethical appeal, to expressed his ideas to concern the injustice in America. He was arrested for protesting the treatment that African Americans received in Birmingham. "An unjust law is a code that a numerical or

Motives of Business Mergers

The objective of competition policy is to prohibit anti-competitive business conduct and maintain markets that are helpful to efficient economic performance. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is an independent agency of the United States government, established in 1914 by the Federal Trade Commission Act with the principal mission of protecting consumers and eliminating anticompetitive business practices. This report will analyze and evaluate the antitrust case of the Office Superstore companies – Staples and Office Depot in 1996 followed by a critical assessment of the decisions made by FTC in the light of the theory of Industrial Organization. A merger is an agreement of a voluntary amalgamation of two firms into one new legal entity (Reference). In USA, the Office Supply Superstore (OSS) market exhibits a high level of market concentration, with the largest players in the industry

The Evasive American Dream in The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, delves readers into the thrilling and extravagant world of the American 1920's. The post war economy of the United States was at a boom; people consequently developed highly indulgent habits. The frequent purchases of luxuries and overzealous spending became common holds. The previously thought well defined line between 'want' and 'need' began to blur. Perhaps the people indulged as a sort of self-reward for having survived the hardships of the First World War. Or, perhaps it was just because they could. Whatever the reason may have been, the 1920's in America have been awarded the title of the Roaring Twenties. The idea of an 'American Dream' was founded in this time period. The American Dream revolves around achieving happiness. Which paths and choices are taken to reach this goal, however, are entirely dependent upon the individual. Also reliant on the person is the definition of 'happy'. To some, 'happy

Cultural Values, Beliefs and Traditions

Cultural values, beliefs, and traditions significantly affect family life. They dictate family member's roles and responsibilities toward one another. Our culture is a "guide" that helps us remember and follow our traditions. Every culture has a model of the ideal family. Russian manners differ from American behavior stereotypes in terms of the way children treat parents and elders, birth rituals, and the relationship between a husband and wife. First of all, in the Russian family, culture is significantly different when it comes to parents and elders. In Russia, the grandmother and grandfather have the highest privileges in the family, whereas in America couples make their own decisions. Russian culture teaches us that older people have wisdom, and younger ones must always listen to them; Therefore, older members of the family dictate rules. On the other hand, in the USA, kids rarely listen either to parents, or to grandparents. American children are much more independent

Ghandi, Fanon and Césaire

History is besieged by eras and stories of humans enslaving and colonizing one another. Yet, it is by viewing such stories through the lens of the oppressed, that we gain a narrative, which best identifies with human emotion, forcing on us a carnal disgust for what humanity is capable of. Yet within such stories, emerge heroes who defied the conventional status quo, pushing for the recognition of equality, a idea once thought to be radical. Frantz Fanon, Aimé Césaire, and M.K. Gandhi are all visionaries that represent entire movements formed on the basis of fighting for indigenous rights. Frantz Fanon encouraged the oppressed to retaliate against the colonizers using violence; although Aimé Césaire agreed violence was necessary in order for the colonizers to listen he believed they deserved it considering decolonization led to racialization. M.K. Gandhi's ideology stands out the most because he preached peaceful counter play. Each of these revolutionists pur

Do the Right Thing - Spike Lee

Director and actor Spike Lee portrays his interpretation of the relationship between races in his movie Do the Right Thing. This movie takes place in the 1980's in Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York, a mainly African American community. This film displays the discrimination between the races and how this can lead to violence. Spike Lee's character, Mookie, is a young black man who lives with his sister, and works at a pizza restaurant. Sal is the owner of the pizza restaurant and father of Vito and racist Pino. Jade, Mookie's older sister, wants him to get a real job and start taking care of his own responsibilities. One of Mookie's friends is Radio Raheem, an intimidating man who rarely speaks but blasts his favorite song "Fight the Power" a rap by Public Enemy, on his boom box everywhere he goes. Another of Mookie's friends is Buggin' Out; a man who is infuriated with Sal for not having any "brothers" on the wall at Sal's restaurant. Buggin' Out starts a boycott and

The Raw Foods Diet

When hearing the words "raw foods diet", one would think that it is a diet composed of uncooked foods, such as taking out carrots from the fridge and eating them just like that. It actually is a diet that is made up of mostly raw fruits, vegetables, and grains(Jacobsen 1). Now, why would someone choose to go through with this diet? People believe that cooking foods rids them of their natural enzymes, which helps our bodies absorb the nutrients and digest. It is believed that eating cooked foods strains our bodies and brings us to a long road of "digestive problems, nutrient deficiency, accelerated aging, and weight gain" (Wong 1). Along with the destruction of enzymes, cooking food also destroys vitamins in most fruits and vegetables. But there are some instances that the opposite occurs, and the cooking action actually brings out the vitamins in the fruit or vegetable, like in tomatoes(Wong 2). Cooking food also kills the bacteria which can prevent food poisoning(Jacobsen 2). If cooked foods are so bad, that means that this raw foods diet must be the healthiest thing out there! According to Jacobsen, the raw foods diet is known to stop allergies, headaches,

Our Technical World

Each day technology is aggressively progressing and advancing in every field affecting our daily lives creating a handful of health issues so the use of technology should be cut down. Even though technology has made our human lives very easy and relaxing it has definitely increased in the health issues we experience through out our life. Technology also isolates us and keeps us in our own little world, making a person-to-person experience very tough. Advancement in technology has made our everyday lives easier. These advancements allow us better and easier ways to teach our kids in schools and bring them new experiences while helping them learn the most beneficial way. Students are able to access information and research on any topic right from their classrooms. Learning from technology is also an exciting way for our kids to learn because of all the pictures and videos available on the Internet. Students no longer need to carry those heavy text books for every subject separately caus

Poverty at Hull House by Jane Adams

"Poverty at Hull House" by Jane Adams is an in depth look at the social and economic conditions of America during the Industrial Revolution. Chapters 5, 7, and 8 cover a wide variety of topics expressed through the thoughts and actions of Jane Adams as she ventures through Chicago. The beginning of chapter 5 starts off by giving an analysis of the interdependency classes have on each other after a certain Mr. Davidson establishes that most people "lose themselves in the cave of their own companionship," Jane Adams refutes this by pointing out the numerous benefits of having a group setting as opposed to making people be more independent. The benefits of a group setting are the central reason for her wanting to establish the Hull house. She points out that the "Hull-House was soberly opened on the theory that the dependence of classes on each other is reciprocal; and that as

Causes of the Cold War

The Cold War can be described as a state of tension between countries in which each side develops policies that are made to strengthen it and weaken the other by falling short by actual war. However, the Cold War beginning in 1947 was more of a verbal war, which was mainly fought through newspapers, magazines, radio and other propaganda methods. The causes and developments of it can be debatable as the Cold War doubles as a conflict between two countries – the USA and the USSR and between the two ideologies of Capitalism and Communism. These ideas were influenced by political, military and economic aspects, which majorly impacted in the conflict between the countries developing into the Cold War. Considerations of political aspects were vital in understanding the tensions, which arose between the USA and USSR. After WWII, peace was restored throughout Europe, however a growing rift between Stalin, Truman and Churchill already threatened it. At the Potsdam Conference, there was a

Economic Structures in America

Class is concerned with a society's economic structure which encompasses the systems of wealth creation and distribution while power entails how politics is expressed. Nonetheless, the two distinct social factors are features of agency and structure in a complex society in which they create causally interlinked configurations. Class structure provides a means for the powerful and privileged to exert and maintain their power over the powerless and underprivileged but this relationship can be altered through community organizing. Class-based separation of American society cannot be denied. In "Class in America – 2006", Gregory Mantsios discusses the way American society is stratified on class grounds. He argues that class distinction does not feature in Americans' conversations, despite their division into wealth-based categories consisting of lower, middle, and upper classes (182). He adds that class separation is also evident in politics in that political leaders seek

Marriage, Divorce and Children

Divorce has increased dramatically throughout the years effecting children of all ages. "The current divorce rate in America is estimated at 50%, of those divorced couples 40% have children" (Parker, 2014). No matter the circumstance divorce greatly effects a child's life. The Ultimate question that has been asked by Dr. Phil is when a marriage is not going well, is it better for the child if the parents get a divorce or if they stay together? Reviewing research over the effects of divorce on children, the effects on children living in a two-parent home in which the parents' marriage is of low quality, and factors considered when comparing the two different options have led to position that it is best for children if parents stay together unless all measures have been taken to save a high-conflict marriage then divorce should be an option. The Effects of Divorce on Children Divorce can have different effects on different children. Without knowing all of the variables of the

Review - Two Films on Hiroshima

One may think there is always only one truth to be told and remembered, but in cases where truth can be used to serve a certain purpose, would what people tell us still be one singular truth? Given the devastating 1945 atomic bomb tragedy in Hiroshima, where the political interests of both parties, Japan and America, were involved, different ways of telling the story have been created. This matter could be examined clearly under the scope of the two films about the tragedy made by the two countries in the years that followed: The Beginning or the End (1947) by American and Children of Hiroshima (1952) by Japanese. With certain stark differences, the two films subtly underlie how America and Japan's perceptions of the incident diverge. Firstly, The Beginning or the End and Children of Hiroshima chose to focus on different clusters of character with the American film mostly revolves about the upper social class and the Japanese film primarily concentrates on the lower social one. Dental Hygenist Observation

I grew up with the impression that dentists were the only people that ever worked with oral procedures. Until recently, my friend, who is currently attending dental school, suggested that I try going into the dental hygiene profession, knowing that I aspired to work in the dental field. He explained to me that being a dental hygienist is a great career to pursue that deals with oral preventive care. I never knew what the tasks and responsibilities of a dental hygienist entailed until I went to West Coast University's dental hygiene clinic and observed the soon-to-be dental hygienists working on patients. When I arrived to the clinic I was asked to wear scrubs, a hair net, and a facemask. I walked into the clinic as the students were preparing their area before the patients arrived. The clinic was as spotless as can be; clear plastic bags were covering the keyboards, mouse, chairs, and trays, basically anything that the students were going to touch was covered. To prevent contaminatio
