A View of Christianity

The Pilgrim's Progress written by John Bunyan is an allegory of Christianity, indicating the spiritual journey toward the goal of salvation. In the text, Christian as a protagonist of the allegory encounters obstructs from his family, friends and strangers who try to dissuade him on a mission to God. Some believe that Christian completes his journey with friendship and faith; however, he only concentrates on his own salvation and his determination, walking away from people who've shaken his faith. Therefore, in John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, instead of putting effort on spreading the gospel, Christian is considered selfish by ignoring the people that are away from salvation and only seeing them as a warning on his journey toward the Celestial City. In a view of Christianity, people are not only recipients of gospel but also missionaries that preach the gospel through God's faith and spirit. Nevertheless, Christian does not count as a missionary but a selfish man who only sees

The Power of Choice

Who am I? We have all asked this simple but perhaps difficult question at some point in our lives. If we are completely honest with ourselves can we actually answer such an introspective question? Will we choose to hold back because of fear? Are we afraid of what the answer to this question might bring to the surface? Or are we fearless in our approach to discovering who we really are? I believe that we are the result or the product of what makes us happy. Our pursuit of happiness influences who we are and who we ultimately want to become. My identity consists of being an athlete, family relationships, and being a student, all leading to my own pursuit of happiness. Being an athlete makes me happy because it gives me the opportunity to be an example to others. For example, when I played high school basketball for the Highland Lady Rams. I would put my hair up in four dino-buns, by doing my hair a certain style, it started a trend, and all the little girls around Pocatello, who came to

Social and Cultural Factors of Nazi Germany

Germany had become heavily influenced by the Nazi Party in 1933-1939 under Adolf Hitler's growing power. Hitler's authority as fuhrer of Germany granted him the ability to reinforce Nazi ideology into German society. The changing social aspects in Germany aimed to exclude the Jewish population from the entertainment and many other factions as well as to purify Germany's social values with Nazi ideology. The cultural aspects in Nazi Germany had heavily influenced the youth, family life, sports, work, education, arts and religion by Hitler Nazifying Germany. A significant group that was targeted in this transformation was the 'Hitler Youth' which aimed to indoctrinate children with Nazi ideology. Because of this, women were also indoctrinated and as a result, they were classed as housewives whose sole purpose was to give birth to healthy Aryan children. The impact of the Nazi state under Hitler's rule was absolute. Hitler had utilised the constitution in favour of his Nazi Party to

Lust by Susan Minot

What is lust? Lust is "a strong feeling of sexual desire", or "a strong desire for something" ("Lust." 1). The short story "Lust" was created by American Novelist and Short Story writer Susan Minot and published as a part of her book Lust & Other Stories in 1989 (Feed Your Need To Read. 1; Wikipedia. 1). "Lust" is a literary work which is written in a first person narration. It is about the un-named woman's brief sexual encounters with fifteen plus men while she is away at boarding school for her high school years. Even a sexual encounter with a man whose name she did not know. She portrays lust as being selfish, and opposed to love. She also highlights the dysfunction and disconnection she feels after her sexual encounters with the men she is sexually involved with (Minot. 381-389). Sociohistorical critique "focuses largely on issues related to the social movements and beliefs prevalent when a piece of literature was written.&quo

Democratization in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland

The topic of democratization is an important aspect of the world's contemporary political environment as much discussion evolves around its evolution and spread as a universal value around the globe. It is a political process that has started its third wave in Central and Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 and the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991. (McFaul, 2002) This was followed by a very significant phase in the progression of democratization, when most of the countries that were part of the Soviet Union started to move away from authoritarianism and entered what today is called, the transition period. The transition paradigm assumed that all transitions from previous political regimes will be towards democracy. Yet, as some cases of the fourth wave of democratization show- as named by Mcfaul (2002), outcomes differ from state to state and today not all qualify as full or partial poliarchies. Given this new phenomena, a vast number of new research is conduct

Racial Profiling and Police Brutality

Some police officers have taken extreme measures in regards to implementing the law when it comes to African Americans. Law enforcement is professional, effective, efficient, and often regarded as a model to follow worldwide. Some would hold that a significant factor in the history of this professionalism is training, which imparts the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that form its foundation (Pinizotto, Bohrer, Davis, 10). But, because of some of the current high profile cases involving law enforcement and especially young African American men, some questions have arisen about the conduct of police officers while performing their normal duties. When considering the normal duties of police officers; what generally comes to mind is, "protect and serve," because that's what their hired to do. This statement of protecting and serving the community sometimes is tested to its utmost when police officers are put in what they consider to be a life or death situation. Therefore, beca

Life of the Apostle Peter

St. Peter was born in Bethsaida and was the son of a man named Johannes (John 1:42-44). The real name of St. Peter was in fact Simon and it changed later on when becoming a disciple (2 Peter 1:1). He also had two brothers, Andrew and Philip. Peter lived in Capharnaum in a house with his mother-in-law (Luke 4:38) before knowing Christ and at the beginning of the Gospel. Peter was married and was a fisherman in Lake Genesareth as the owner of his own boat (Luke 5:3). Simon is introduced to Jesus through his brother Andrew who was a follower of John the Baptist (John 1:40-41). When Jesus sees Andrew and Peter fishing in the Sea of Galilee, He asks for them to follow Him and they drop everything to do so (Matthew 4:18, Mark 1:16-18). Jesus travels to Peter's house and heals Peter's ill mother-in-law (Matthew 8:14-15). When Peter throws a net into the ocean under Jesus's request. He doubts that he will catch any fish because they have spent day and night and there was no success. But when

Interpersonal Communication Paper

Deciding which elements of the interpersonal communication model that I believe to be the most important is difficult. I think this model was created with each part serving a unique purpose and importance. Every part of the model is needed to effectively communicate. With that said, I believe there are a few that stand apart from the rest. While they are all important, I feel that some could be left out and all good communication would not be lost. However, there are a few that, if removed, would be detrimental to the process of communicating. I believe these to be the sender and receiver of the message, the channel by which the message is sent, and then lastly the feedback given after the communication has taken place. The sender plays an essential role in any communication process. Without a sender there would be no message. The sender has to do, in my opinion, the most work. They have to decide what the message is, what method they are going to send it in, to whom they are sending

Anglo-Saxon Culture in Beowulf

The Dark Ages was a time of immense violence and corruption, but it is also a time that very little is known. It started around the time of the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 A.D. and lasted until about 1000 A.D. During these five hundred years, very little information was written down which makes it hard for historians to conclude anything about this time period. However the few pieces of literature that made it out of the Dark Ages provide a more insightful understanding as to what this murky gap in history was really like-one of these pieces is the heroic epic of "Beowulf". Throughout "Beowulf" the reader is given a more in depth view into what life was like back then, especially life for the Anglo-Saxons. Even though it is a work of fiction, the role of women, warriors, and mead halls in Anglo-Saxon culture is reflected in "Beowulf" through Wealhtheow, Beowulf, and Heorot. Despite the fact that "Beowulf" revolves around the accomplished mal

Symbolism in The Snows of Kilimanjaro

One of the most well-known writers of the twentieth century is Ernest Hemingway. He played a crucial role in developing modern fiction, since he includes his thoughts and reflects on the times and circumstances of when his stories were created. The representative story is "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," which shows Hemingway's life and times through Harry, who is the main character of the story. The story focuses on Harry and his wife as they are waiting for a plane to come and take him to a doctor or hospital, but Harry anticipates his imminent death. The reason why "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" handles the vanity of human ambition in the face of death so capably is that, through the story, Hemingway is trying to express his own concern for himself. Hemingway regrets and examines himself through Harry's confrontation with death, facing the final hours and thinking back upon his past dissipated life as an artist distracted by women and money. In other words, the story reflects both Harry's an

Documentary Film - Waiting for Superman

"One of the saddest days of my life was when my mother told me Superman did not exist. I was like what do you mean he's not real? And she thought I was crying because it's like Santa Claus is not real and I was crying because there was no one coming with enough power to save us." This was the first of many quotes from the film that truly pulled at my heartstrings. As I watched the stories of five students and their families, I became infuriated by the injustice. I was naive in the sense that I was unaware of how much of struggle it is for many families to receive a decent education. These are good, motivated, smart kids who were simply born into unfortunate circumstances. Their parents (and grandparents) want what every parent wants for their children, and that is the best for them. I was inspired by the great measures these families took in order to properly educate their children. These five children were lucky to have families to continually fight for them, even when the school system had already failed them. But what about the children wh

From a Name to a Number by Alter Weiner

64735. This is what Alter Wiener, survivor of the Holocaust and author of From A Name to A Number, learned to respond to at several concentration camps during the Holocaust. After being stripped of his family, friends, religion, and any personal belongings, Alter had only his name left - and Hitler managed to take that, too. "64735" was the final step it took to turn these tortured humans into subhumans, just as the Germans desired. However, From A Name to A Number is Alter Wiener's story of how he overcame "64735" and regained his identity while overcoming many struggles and hardships that he endured under Hitler during the Holocaust. When Alter was thirteen, the Germans invaded Poland and killed his father. He could no longer attend school or practice his faith, and he had to wear an armband with the Star of David on it, indicating that he was a Jew. Every time a German passed, he was required to remove his hat and bow or he would be beaten senseless. Every human

England and the Industrial Revolution

Industrial Revolution, the era of technologic, economic and social changes, dramatically impacted the working class. It changed not only the machinery and work organization, but also the location of workplaces and home, the size, composition and relationship of the family. Workers were used to work in the small shops or at home, on their own pace and interest, but undisciplined work style was not acceptable in the big growing factories. The rural and agricultural life turned to urban industrial with longer working hours and away from family. The industrial revolution started in Great Britain and the years 1740-1860 are considered to be the most important time of its beginning. At that time the British cotton textile industry was most productive in the world and Britain did everything in their power to stay in the top position. Meanwhile, there were new machinery invented which gave Britain ability to exceed quantity and quality of textile production. In 1733, John Kay invented a ma

Marijuana Issues in Colorado

Ever since Colorado Government passed the laws to bring legal marijuana to our state there has been an uprise in conflict throughout the state, because there are many people for it and there are many people who are against it. The problem is what has occurred and how marijuana has affected people in our state since the legalization has occurred and what the future outcomes look to be such as it becoming to much for people to handle and how easy it is for almost anyone to access it. This is a very complicated issue because the Colorado Government as well as the citizens of Colorado have seen how much revenue legal marijuana has brought to our state and because it is almost impossible to reverse the laws. According to Ferner, Matt "Legal Marijuana In Colorado Has Already Generated 15 Million for Schools" Huff Post 20 Feb 2015. Saudi's In Bikinis by Nicolas D. Kristof

There is always controversy that lies within cultural traditions and practices around the world. Many people scrutinize the small percentage of African tribes that practice body scarification as a barbaric, yet their own people view it as heroism and art. Even in the United States- a country with a stereotypical vision of freedom of culture, can be seen as a place where chaos and sexual objectification occurs on a day to day basis. This is the occurrence of controversy, the difference of opinion based upon social and cultural upbringings, though who is to determine one is "better" or "right" over the other? Nicholas D. Kristof voices his opposing opinion in his essay "Saudis in Bikinis" observing and interviewing women of Saudi Arabia and their roles in society. In comparison to the United States, the women of Saudi Arabia are generally seen as inferior and subordinate to men, but in their defense there are always two sides to each story. Kristof makes a

2015 State of The Union Address

In president Obama's State of the Union speech, I think the main topic he addressed was issues surrounding middle class economics. The medium I choose was the video because a visual is better for me to be more engaged if I am watching a speech and to try to determine ethos versus just reading a speech; and also to witness the emotion and passion they have for the topic they are discussing, which I may not be able to do just by reading the speech. His main point is that middle class economics and expanding opportunities works and will continue to work. Helping people afford childcare was one of the issues he addressed. In America, we need childcare because usually both parents in a family work, or there is a single parent household and the parent works. Raising minimum wag

However, Hamlet procrastinates throughout the play and does not seek revenge until the end, when Hamlet finally follows his instincts and kill's the murderer of his father. Hamlet's uncertainty causes delays in seeking his revenge, and ultimately fulfilling his destiny throughout the play. Hamlet needed to be sure that the Ghost was telling the truth before he sought revenge, Hamlet procrastinates killing Claudius while he is praying and lastly his trip to England further delayed his revenge. Throughout the play, Hamlet has failed to realize that his true destiny was to kill the one who murdered his father. The Ghost delivered his news by saying, "The serpent that did sting thy father's life/ Now

Gender Violence in Bangladesh

One cannot understand the problematics of gender violence solely by referring to the relationship of power or authority between man and women. Rather one needs to consider the problem by relating it to the specific social formation. In this context, the role played by the state, both its coercive and ideological apparatus, is thus to be considered as well. In order to clarify our perspective on the problem, it is also important to note that violence against women is to be considered as being essentially related to the more general problems of women's oppression. So instead of conceptually isolating the phenomena, we shall consider oppression to be the wider term, and take violence to indicate, the actual exercising of or the perpetuation of those oppressive roles which are dictated by the male-dominant values of society. As such violence can take both physical and nonphysical forms and may be affected both through coercion and consent, the latter being elicited through various social

Business Case Study - UMUC Haircuts

Myra Morningstar is the owner of the small business UMUC Haircuts. It is a small shop in the college campus area and Myra is looking to expand her business to meet the needs of customers. In order for her to be successful in her new adventure she will need to consider the needs of her customers, use of technology, and competition with the new local competitor. Barriers to entry in the Hair Care industry are very minimal. When it comes to barbershops and salons, there are a few already in the area with a couple more potentials. High customer volume creates much competition in the market. The only barrier to entry is licensing. Barbershops and salons must have a business license along with a few permits (Barbershop Business Guide, 2014). The fixed costs are minimal and no special products are needed. The competition amongst salons and barbershops is moderate to high. Not one company dominates the industry. Besides the spa across the street, most are comparable in prices. The biggest

Anne Carson and Paulo Freire

After reading "Short Talks" by Anne Carson and reading "The Banking Concept" by Paulo Freire it became evident that there was a lack of similarity in content and each style of writing. When reading "Short Talks" you immediately notice that Anne Carson has broken her work into short thoughts that are difficult to understand. After clearing your mind and rereading what she has written you will be able to understand most of her thoughts. Paulo Freire has written "The Banking Concept" in a much easier to read paragraph form. In reading "Short Talks" by Anne Carson, I found it very challenging to interpret what the author was trying to say. In "On Sunday Dinner with Father" Carson gives us insight on the rude remarks her father would make to her during a typical Sunday dinner. Carson quoted her father saying, "Are you going to put that chair back where it belongs or just leave it there looking like a uterus" (Carson 142

Chemical Defense In Red Algae

All animals and plants have different defense mechanisms that they use to give them an advantage in their environment. Animals, like a sea urchin, may have spikes, while hippos have large jaws. The red alga Bonnemaisonia has a chemical defense that prevents harmful bacteria from growing on it. In this experiment, the defense production in Bonnemaisonia hamifera was manipulated in multiple cultures in order to measure the cost and fitness benefits in which producing those defenses has on the plants algae. For one culture, the control was the impaired chemical defense of the alga, but it was exposed to an externally controlled epibacterial load, while the other culture was exposed to a natural epibacterial load. After measuring the length and observing the condition of the leaves after weeks, the experiment was concluded. The first culture resulted in significant plant growth while the second culture resulted in reduced plant growth, along with bleaching of the leaves, signaling bacterial

Rave Culture and Youth in the UK

Introduction Nowadays the nature of youth culture in the UK is constantly changing owing to various factors. The Ideologies, aspirations and attitudes of young people are different in comparison to those in the 20th century. One of the key factors that has played a part in this transformation of younger generations and society is "Rave culture." Usually, this is the live performance involving electronic dance music and is accompanied by a huge "flock" of people. Furthermore, the revellers, members of rave party, were also infamous owing to the use of drugs such as alcohol, MDMA and LSD. In addition, the use of narcotics has made the parties unique because the perception of music is different, while an individual is influenced by drugs. Thus, M. Collin (2009) maintains that it was phenomenal type of entertainment ever known in the 1980s. Historical Background - Emergence In the early 1940-1945, the economic status of the United Kingdom was severely damaged due to

Research Paper - Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Poe was born January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts. He was born to Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe, Jr. His parents were traveling actors, so he didn't really know them. By 1811, his father had abandoned the family; Poe was two years old at the time. That forced Elizabeth Poe to raise Edgar, his elder brother Henry, and his infant sister Rosalie alone. Things seem to get worse for Poe. On December 8 1811, Elizabeth died of consumption (today known as tuberculosis). Later news arrived that David Poe had died days later from the same disease. All of the three Poe were split up. Edgar was then adopted by the family of John and Frances Allan. Poe then made his foster family's name his own, becoming Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar was more attached to his foster mother, Frances, instead of his foster father. Poe enrolled in at the University of Virginia
