Business Tool - Switching Costs

A switching cost is a business tool that exists in nearly every consumer market. (Klemperer, 1987) Firms attempt to build competitive advantages that allow for large profits while being shielded from market share incursion. (Dhanorkar, 2012) The extremely successful business investor, Warren Buffett, originally coined the term 'moat' and subsequently applied it as a competitive advantage strategy. (Cebrzynski, 2007) The MorningStar investment company teaches that switching costs are a type of moat (2005) and investors seek them out when choosing potential investment opportunities. (Dhanorkar, 2012) This specific advantage, or moat, is very desirable from a business manager's perspective. However, these varying kinds of switching costs prevent consumers and end-users from freely utilizing products or services at their discretion. This paper will identify those switching costs that exist in a consumer market. According to a MorningStar, Inc. investment course, switching

Sex Trafficking in New York City

A crime such as human sex trafficking seldom appears on newspaper headlines, yet is a problem that is ongoing around the world every single day. This problem appears in big cities around the world, but the hustle and bustle of big cities mask these crimes. A city that has been plagued with undercover sex trafficking is New York City. A lot of people in the U.S. are aware of the crime that is sex trafficking, but most of them are not aware of the gravity of this issue and its daily ongoing underground operations. People might think that they have never witnessed sex trafficking but the reality of the matter is that it can happen during the light of day and because most of the victims of sex trafficking do not really attract any negative attention from the police or other authorities, the crime goes on in front of people's eyes. The city of New York is plagued with this quiet and inconspicuous crime and there has been an ongoing campaign that aims to reach these victims and to empower th

The Fear and Rush of Skydiving

Skydiving experience outweighs all the fears engendered by this sport. It calls for a great deal of emotions during the jump and a very relaxed feeling once you are back on the land. It is one of the best experiences in my lifetime. I cannot compare this experience with anything else. I will start off by describing what I felt when I was at the airfield ready for getting on the plane in Arizona. My forehead spews forth sweat as I gazed at the monstrous silver-plated bird in front of me. It is a DC-3 and even its shadow is threateningly voluminous. I'm going over in my mind the seven steps: count, grab the controls, check the dome, note the position of the other skydivers, locate the jump area, determine the direction of the wind and prepare for landing 1500 feet above ground. Everything appears so easy, but, how to know it if I have never done it before? The risks of responding to that question could be disastrous. As I board, my final thought is that this will be the first time that I

Soil Moisture Levels and the Porcellio Scaber

This experiment was conducted in order to investigate the preferred soil moisture levels of the Porcellio scaber (Slater), because they had recently been observed on a farm in Waikari and it was interesting to find out further information about them. The main focus on the Slaters within this experiment was their soil moisture, and that is why they have been investigated to see what soil moisture levels they will prefer to live in when given the choice of very dehydrated soil (Soil Sample no.1 containing a very low soil moisture level of 0 mL water (dehydrated)), dehydrated soil (Soil Sample no.2 containing a low soil moisture level of 20 mL water), relatively dehydrated soil (Soil Sample no.3 containing a relatively low soil moisture level of 40 mL), relatively moist soil (Soil Sample no.4 containing a relatively high soil moisture level of 60 mL), moist soil (Soil Sample no.5 containing a high soil moisture level of 80 mL) and very moist soil (Soil Sample no.6 containing a very high

The Polish Resistance of WWII

Poland stands apart from other nations who fell prey to the wrath of Axis aggression during WWII in that it was the flashpoint of the war in Europe; not as a match that lit a powder keg but rather a foot that stepped on a landmine. In 1939 Poland found itself consumed by Hitler's sweeping blitzkrieg warfare from the west as well as the Soviet Union in the east who had agreements with the Germans to divvy the nation up amongst themselves. The uniqueness of Poland's unfortunate geographic location led to a variety of political, ethnic, and other unified groups who all brought their personal agendas to the fight. The top players in the resistance movements of Poland where the exiled Polish government, the British Empire whom the Poles heavily relied on for support to combat their various aggressors, and the Soviet Union who would prove to be a wild-card ally at best. Despite many efforts including a grandiose rebellion known as the Warsaw Uprising, the Nazis maintained relatively secure c

Decision Making and Borderline Personality Disorder

The modern concept of the diagnostic entity has emerged from influences starting from the late 19th century. The diagnostic term "borderline" came from English psychiatrist C.H Hughes in 1884, which wrote an article called "Borderland Psychiatrist Records" where he mentioned borderline for the very first time. Symptoms of BPD were not clustered by either neurosis or psychosis. Borderline Personality disorder is a psychological condition characterized by interpersonal dysfunctions, unstable relationships, emotional dysregulation, suicidal behavior, impulsive aggression, and rapid switched between idealizing and devaluing relationships. Severe psychiatric conditions are characterized by a pervasive pattern of marked impulsivity and instability in affects of oneself image and interpersonal relationships. Borderline Personality Disorder is formed from impoverished self-image, internal emptiness, stress related to dissociation, instability of goals and plans, hyperse

Theatrical Costume Review

Costumes play a key role in making a successful play. They are able to set the mood, add realism to the storyline, not to mention they give you an idea of what the character is like. Costumes also give the audience an idea of a character's personality or attitude, the time frame of the show, and make the show more convincing for the audience. Costumes are also important because it helps an actor find his/her character. And when it comes down to it, if the actors are not believable as their characters then the audience won't suspend their disbelief. At the Ark at Eight is a beautifully written and humorous story about two penguins who smuggle their third penguin friend on to Noah's Ark. The costumes in At the Ark at Eight are exceptional. Penguins are known as flightless birds that are mostly in the water. They spen

Concepts of African American Literature

African American literature is an extremely dense and rich form of literature that contains many types of similar tropes. These tropes can be seen throughout many of African American works of literature. A few that will be discussed thoroughly in this paper, that are majorly common in these types of works are: the idea of double consciousness, the question and search for identity, the Sankofa experience, the Great Migration, and lastly the return to the South. These tropes may seem very different but they all tie into the question of identity and the struggle that African Americans faced and still to this day face due to slavery. It is important to read works of African American literature in order to be able to understand the trials and tribulations that slavery brought upon this particular group of people. Reading African American literature ranging from spirituals and slave narratives, to works written during and after the Civil Rights Movement provides readers and scholars with a

Water Purification Research

Water purification is the process of taking contaminated water and putting it through a cycle that will end up cleaning and sterilizing it. There are many different ways to carry out this process in order to make the water healthier and safer to drink. What many people don't know or don't really care to think about, are the pros, cons, and cost of each choice of purification systems. Four specific purification systems are activated charcoal filters, ozone and ultraviolet light purification, and chlorination. Water comes from many different places that can cause water to be contaminated with germs and bacteria, which is why chlorination is used in many cases to provide safer drinking water by killing disease-causing bacteria and pathogens that could be present in the water. Even though it gets rid of bacteria, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides information on their website, www.cdc.gov, that states chlorination is not as effective in the same way towards some protozoa. Overall, the chlorination is proven to reduce diseases by around 22-84%, which is a huge improvement, but the numbers could be even better if the protozoa was also killed

The Adoption Choice

In the past, children were raised mostly by their biological parents. In the rare case that they were not, they had to either to survive on the streets or live in orphanages. However, times have changed, and today children can be raised in single-parent families, by grandparents, foster parents, stepparents, or other parenting figures, all this is due to the procedure of adoption, which has become common worldwide. However, the occurrence of adoption has a number of features which distinguish it from a simple residence of a child in a family. Adoption has been practiced throughout history. In the past years, adoption seemed to be a working solution to problem situations. In recent times, adoption has still become a distinct benefit for thousands of children in need of parents. It enables the lives of many children to be transformed. For many people today adoption is a way to create a family, or to others, it is a way to expand a family. It is a lifetime decision that should be made ver

Biography of George Fredric Handel

George Frederic Handel was born in 1685 in Halle, Germany to his father; George who was a barber surgeon and his mother Dorothea. Handel showed interest in pursuing music at an early age which was said to have been encouraged by his mother and discouraged by his father who didn't believe that a career in the arts was a realistic source of income. When Handel was only 7 years of age, he played as an organist for the Duke of Weissenfels, here he met his first teacher; organist/composer; Zachow. While Handel studied under Zachow, he skillfully learned the organ, oboe and violin all by the time he was 10 years old! In his teenage years, Handel composed cantatas and chamber music for church and sacred purposes. Although Handel was clearly dedicated and talent

Plato and Descartes - Methods of Philosophy

When looking and examining both Plato and Descartes method of philosophy, we can see that both had similarities and differences to their approach. Both Plato and Descartes approaches conclude that knowledge must be what is certain and opinions or other ideas are what must be uncertain. They both believed that the mind and body are separate from each other and that the mind is immortal. We see this come to life with Plato in our reading of Phaedo. Socrates (Plato) believed that the body is attached to the soul but that the soul can live independently from the body. He even goes as far as to say that the body drags the soul around, confusing the soul with its senses keeping it from completely knowing what is certain. The only way that the soul finds what is certain (wisdom and Knowledge) is through separation from the body. This is where we find out why he does not fear death for that death only allows the soul to be freed and to gain what is truly certain. We also see the belief that t

The Federal Communication Commission (FCC)

The Federal Communication Commission or FCC is an independent government organization that was created to regulate radio, television, satellite, wire, and cable in the United States. Throughout the history of structured communication, broadcasting regulations have sparked a significant amount of controversy that has been debated by many Americans. The reasons for these controversies and disputes have to do with licensing issues, meeting the public interest standard, and First Amendment violation. In this paper I will be discussing why the FCC is allowed to restrict ownership of broadcast stations, as well as to why I am in favor of regulating how many licenses can be owned by a single entity. The United States began its early instances of regulating communication during the early 1900's. The intended purpose for the regulation was to allow multiple companies to get their signals/programs placed over airwaves without any interference. The Radio Act of 1912 is a federal law that ordered

Types of Protein Molecules

Proteins are the most complex biological molecules. They are made up of C,H,O,N, and a little S (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and a little sulfur). They accomplish all life functions. Proteins are polymers of amino acid monomers. Amino Acids are joined by peptide bonds. A peptide bond is when the carbon in the carboxyl group of one amino acid connects to a nitrogen in the amino group of another amino acid. This happens through dehydration synthesis, a process when a molecule loses water. Once all the amino acids join together or connect by peptides bonds, they form a sequence of amino acids also known as a polypeptide chain that become the primary structure of a protein. Once one or more polypeptide chains twist into a 3-D shape to form a protein. Hydrogen bonding helps aid the atoms in a protein hold together and and giving it its shape. Hydrogen bonding is the attractive force between the hydrogen attached to an electronegative atom of one molecule and an electronegative atom of a different mol

Relationships and Depression

Marriage and closer relationships are considered as a bond of comfort and support. In this case, important factors or consequences that call for physical and mental health or emotional leverage is adjusted for the well-being of the relationship overall. However, depressive symptoms caused by elevated depressive disorders have a harsh outcome for marital adjustment. Research studies have shown that depression is a consequence in marital relationships and that this type of consequence can mainly cause difficulties among the couple than it could actually contribute to the relationship. Although depression can be a valid reasoning for a lower relationship quality, it can bring more of an outcome involving effects that overlook effective characteristics of depression especially anger and sometimes hostility may arise depending on how mild to hot the situation arises. "This issue has only been recently examined. In a sample of middle-aged and older adults, angry, hostility, and depr

The Use and Abuse of Drugs in the Military

Imagine the person defending our country, armed with an automatic rifle, a grenade and high as a kite. For many of our service men that is the case. Soldiers are under an enormous amount of physical and mental stress, many use prescription drugs, street drugs, and a combination to cope. According to a 2012 Department of Defense study of military lifestyle, while the overall civilian rates of prescription drug misuse for all populations of civilians was 4.4%, the rate for the Department of Defense was 11.7%, over two-and-a-half times higher than the civilian rate. According to another study done in 2012, 43% of active-duty military self-reported binge drinking within the past 30 days. Many active duty soldiers and veterans use and abuse drugs to cope with pain and depression on the field, and post traumatic stress of of the field, due to these numbers increasing yearly more treatment programs and prevention programs are being established. In earlier days where drugs were first becomi

The Role of Death and Last Rites

The right to die and euthanasia, also known as physician-assisted suicide, have long been topics of passionate debate. Euthanasia is simply mercy killing while the phrase "physician-assisted suicide" regards the administering or the provision of lethal means to aid in the ending of a person's life. The right to die entails the belief that if humans have the governmental and natural right to live and to prolong their lives then they should also have the right to end their life whenever desired. Articles such as Gary Cartwright's "Last Rights" and Margaret Somerville's "The Role of Death" provide the life support for these two topics will likely never fade away. Both articles cover physician-assisted suicide and the right to die. Cartwright's article is much more personal and easier for readers to relate to while Somerville's article is very aggressive and tries to persuade the reader with exhaustive vocabulary and unproven facts and statistics.  To begin

There are thousands of arguments for and against this topic and both sides of the argument are firm on their beliefs and argue extensively. Abortion is a topic of immense complexity and so, to convince opposing sides in a clear and concise manner may be very challenging. Pro-life Across America started in 1989. The Narrative Style of Jamaica Kincaid

The story being analyzed, for narration, in this paper is author Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl". The simplest way to understand narration is to read a story and understand the way it was being told. This story, "Girl", is basically a set of instructions from a mother to her daughter. But, the way the instructions are given is what makes the story. In fact, it does not make a story it makes a tirade, a rant. By definition, a tirade is a long, violent, angry speech. In this story, which is not much of a story, tirading is exactly what the mother is doing. The mother is giving a long, angry speech to the daughter about how to, essentially, act like her. The directions are given to the daughter in a demanding way and the daughter only interjects to say something twice. Even after the daughter says what she says, the mother does not acknowledge it and continues to give her instructions. The story is very interesting because there is no action, of any sort, being performed b

Company-Driven Expatriation

The term normally describes professionals or skilled sent for limited-time assignments (1-4 years) in other countries, rather than all the 'immigrants' or 'migrant workers', thus giving the definition a narrower sense. Company-initiated expatriation can be described as a way for employees to get the opportunity to have a different perspective and role inside in the big picture, to enlarge their professional network and to further develop their skills inside the company. It is a process initiated by the company itself, with the employees being sent to different subsidiaries around the world, both old and newly founded. Starting at the end of the last century, through globalization, a global market for skilled professionals has emerged that contributed to the equalization of income for professionals, relative to cost of living. This means, it became more affordable and even rewarding for employees to travel to other countries. Nonetheless, with the financial problems linked with expat

Pride in The Old Man and the Sea

"Fight them," he said. "I'll fight them until I die," (Hemingway 115). Santiago is a man eager to follow his calling and willing to take chances in life with his strong pride. Ernest Hemingway uses dialogue and thought to develop the theme of pride. Throughout Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway illustrates Santiago as a prideful man through his dialogues. In the battle full of hardship between the marlin and the old man, Santiago comments, "A man can be destroyed but not defeated" (103), Santiago's body has nearly reached its limit- his hand is cramped, cuts over his face and hands, sore muscles. The old man did not give up, since to him a man's body can be shattered but being defeated is more shameful. Santiago ignores all of th

A Single Family Household

The obstacle that I faced in my life is growing up in a single parent household. This is my greatest obstacle because I grew up watching my mother raise three children on her own while taking care of her blind mother. The pain that my mother has endured has had a great effect in my life. Loneliness, hardship, and stress were obstacles that occurred in my life. Though some of these obstacles may cause little distress, others have left me hanging like a wet towel. Countless couples have gone through divorce; however it is not the same from a child's perspective. In my case the split between my parents' had led me to grow up feeling alone. Although I had my siblings and my grandmother as well as my mother, it was difficult to comprehend what was going on; for all I knew my father was nowhere to be found. Growing up all I ever wanted was to have my father take me to the park, as I had seen many of my friend's fathers take them to the park. This had led me to grow up isolated, and closed off from the people around me. As much as my mother has tried to participate in my life she could not fill the void in my heart that was

The Importance of Reading

Reading is an amazing communication channel that human being has invented. By reading, people can basically communicate with each other regardless of their locations. They do not need to physically meet each other to learn from each other's experience. This is the way that human have been able to transfer knowledge from one generation to another and let the science advance and grow gradually. We would not be where we are today if we were not able to read and write effectively. Today, we are even able to read and interpret three thousand years old notes from our ancients, which helps us to learn from the experience of the past. Being said that, reading skills have had significant influence in our life in all aspects on this planet. As the memory is essential part of our brain for our daily life, reading the experience of others from the past and present is absolutely important part of the modern human life. Reading is so important in our today's life that parents and teachers encourage kids to read from their early ages. My classmates, Shujin and Barbara, told me that they have started reading when they were about five years old. As a result, Sh

The Legalization of Medical Marijuana

In the United States, it is against federal law to possess, sell, or grow marijuana for any purpose if not prescribed. Alaska, California, DC, is the few states to have recognized the better use and the value of marijuana for medical reasons. Today Marijuana is still classified in many states as an illegal schedule1 drug alongside Heroin, Cocaine, and Morphine by the controlled substance act. Marijuana is a drug that comes from dried and cut leaves called the hemp plant, which has an active ingredient in it, called THC also known as Weed, Pot, Reefer, grass, and Mary-Jane. A new survey shows that 53% are all for legalizing marijuana, while 44% are opposed (Pew Research Center). Does Marijuana pose as a medical value? Is Marijuana harmful enough to remain illegal and how does it compare to other forms of illegal drugs that are not classified as legal? Lastly, what is Marijuana effect on our country and does making it leg
