Overview of Homegrown Terrorism

Abstract The following paper explores the phenomenon of home grown terrorism, and what homegrown terrorism is, how it is detected and if it is growing throughout the years. The method of analysis used is literature review. Through literature review it addresses the way secrete agents organize ways to detect terrorism, what methods terrorist use to commit their attempts, and how much it has grown over the years. The research shows that over the years homegrown terrorism is more common than people would think. Keywords: homegrown, terrorism When you think of terrorism you think of the September 11 attack on the New York Trade Center. The September 11 attack was a form of terrorism similar to that of homegrown terrorism. What is homegrown terrorism in reality? Well according to Rascoff (2010), homegrown terrorism is, "the phenomenon whereby individuals and groups carry out attacks (or attempt to) within their native or adopted country or society" (p.1716-1718). The Bible and the Book of Exodus

The bible is made up of sources, and many authors composed the bible. The bible will sometimes recognize its sources, but usually doesn't make it clear who was the author. The best way to view the bible authors is as editors. Exodus is the second chapter in the Old Testament after Genesis, there also seems to be at least four hundred year time frame between these two chapters. Since Egyptians didn't keep good records, this makes piecing together the reasons for the time gap difficult and is left mainly up to assumptions, based on other parts of the bible and other historical records. Exodus tries to tell us who Yahweh is. This is important enough to be placed as the second section of the bible. I will be selecting only a few sections of Exodus to focus on answering three important questions when trying to understand the bible. But I will also cover how we can read Exodus and gather an understanding of the meaning based on when it was written. I'm also viewing Exodus as not having one a

Racism and Open-Minded Children

Children should be taught to be less judgmental based on accidentals. Children grow up learning from their parents that it's all right to judge a person based on skin color, religion, and culture. Children need to stop following their parents' ways of thinking and branch out on their own and make their own decisions. As a parent, one needs to show a child that having physical experiences with a person is the correct way to make a judgment about that person. Not only should parents show children to be more open minded but teachers as well should show children to be more open minded. Assistant Professor Thayer-Bacon states, "If a person has no realization that there is more than one point of view, and what her point of view is,

A Study in Recycling Water

Water accounts for roughly 70% of the earth. It also makes up about 60% of the human body. Although there is an abundance of ocean water, freshwater is very scarce. Out of all the water on earth freshwater accounts for about 3%. In New Jersey the water reservoirs in the Highlands provide water to nearly half the states population. In Union County, people in residential areas and office buildings waste potable, drinkable water on activities that can use grey water of rainwater as a substitute and have the same result. On average people use about 80 gallons of potable water a day. This number could be almost cut in half if people would recycle grey water and use it in bathrooms, for land irrigation, and also for washing cars or the outside of their house. A short time ago Hurricane Sandy destroyed parts of New Jersey and also contaminated a number of freshwater lakes and reservoirs with raw sewage, which carried high levels of bacteria and viruses in it. This caused these freshwater basi

America and Societal Racism

In a recent study they found 75% of white Americans believe that there is no issue with the criminal justice system and that racism is not a problem in the world we live in today. Racism can be broken down into three basic categories: economic, governmental, and societal. Economic racism is the idea that the color of your skin can help you or hurt you when trying to gain wealth. Racism in the government is prejudice against people of color in traffic stops and the criminal justice system and the education system. Lastly and most importantly the racism in societal is the labels we put on people based on their skin color. Societal racism is the most harmful and influential because it involves economic and governmental racism. Societal racism is in the books we read, the movies we see, in schools, and even in jobs. Tatei Thomas says "Racism, especially in our society is a di

Companies and Dividend Policies

Introduction Dividend policy refers to a set of procedures that are established for a company towards sharing its profits realized among its shareholders using a concrete procedure developed and consented to under legal review and considerations. The shareholders are always entitled to benefits so long as the organization is making profits within the timeframe of its operations. However, the procedure with which the benefits are shared is drafted and assented to by the management with the consent of the stakeholders to the company (Lehmann & National Bureau of Economic Research. 1991). The following represents a dividend policy and execution for a company called Missouri Hospital (Private) which is a hypothetical company. (i) Introduction to the Organization The hospital was designed and developed by community volunteers as makeshift solutions to high prevalence of maternal mortality to address a range of complex and critical care requirements unique to the Community. Life is Beautiful - The Abortion Dilemma

Life is a beautiful thing. The way a fetus is produced is beyond magical. Having a child is a miracle that happens more often than usual in America. There are people who are overjoyed with happiness when they find out they are pregnant, and people who dread the thought of carrying a child in their stomach for nine months. To many women pregnancy is miraculous but to others it is a nightmare. According to abort73.com. "Half of pregnancies among American women are unintended; about 4 in 10 of these are terminated by abortion. Twenty-one percent of all U.S. pregnancies end in abortion." Meaning innocent children full of life, opportunity, dreams, and a chance of existence is being torn away from them. Abortion is an evil and unlawful act. One terminates a life that does not belong to them. To end an innocent child's life using a more so heinous procedure is not only unconscionable for doctors to perform, but overall morally wrong. Murder is the killing of an innocent human lif

Video Games as a Sport

Video games have moved past a trend or a fad of the late 1990's and early 2000's. There is clearly something going on with video games. Should video games be considered a sport? Google defines sport as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment." In the literal term Video game are not a sport unless you count moving your fingers as physical exertion. Esports are also known as e-sports, competitive gaming, and electronic sports. Esport is defined by Dictionary.com as "competitive tournaments of video games, especially among professional gamers." The earliest known video game competition took place on October 19, 1972 at Stanford University for the game Spacewar. Stanford students were invited to an "Intergalactic spacewar

Frankenstein and Les Fleurs du Mal

The contextual circumstances in which a literary work is composed have a profound effect on the ideas and opinions that composers express within them. This is most notable when examining Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal (1857) and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1817). Both texts allude to the theme of religion and the role of women in society. However due to the 40 year gap between their respective compositions their views on the movement are quite apparently different. These polarisations are largely the result of the differing social contexts of the composers, and are illustrated by their uses of literary techniques. Firstly, we see these two composers discuss their opinions of religion and its place in their contemporary worlds. In Frankenstein, we see Shelley convey her Romantic religious view that man can never overcome the divine and sublime power of nature. This means that Shelley characterises mother-nature to be omnipotent throughout her novel. We see this omnipotence wh

The Significance of Music

"Music, when soft voices die, vibrates in the memory."- PB Shelley Music is the only art form which can be felt. We can't touch music, but music touches us. It is an expression of certain aesthetic ideas through rhythm, tune and language. Music is that bridge which connects our soul-that inner self in us which is hidden from the society and even our conscious selves, to the outside world, or more specifically, to other people's souls. We have National Anthems for every Nation, religious hymns and even songs that we choose as a group anthem or as a couple song-to mark our years of togetherness as friends or as couples. When we sing our National Anthem, on a day of National importance, all the citizens of our nation feel connected together through our hearts and souls- and it is that music called our National Anthem that brings this feeling of togetherness within us. Our religious hymns make us feel united to God. Our group songs make our friendship special to us-it connects o

Dirt Bikes and Street Bikes

From the first time I watched motorcycle racing on TV, I was hooked; I made the decision to save my money so I could purchase my first new motorcycle. I didn't know what kind of motorcycle I was going to purchase, so I did some research and found there are two main types of motorcycles: dirt bikes and street bikes. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to own your own motorcycle, but you can't decide if you want to ride a dirt bike or if you want to ride a street bike? Activities, engine type, and cost were the main focal points I used when I compared a dirt bike to a street bike. When one is deciding whether to buy a dirt bike or a street bike, the type of activities you can do on each of the motorcycles is an important point to consider. On a dirt bike, one can enjoy the wilderness by riding in open fields, mountains, or even riding on trails that go through beautiful forests. When one is r

The Inevitable Changes of Life

"Laziness is the engine of progress," stands a Russian proverb. Indeed, all the times human-being aimed to make his life easier; people have invented various tools to cultivate fossils, invented automobile and plane, and also have created economical and political systems in order to live better and increase humankind's utility. Let's try to figure out what benefits and drawbacks has Communism, political system, which in the beginning of 20th century promised to make people's life easier and better. "Animal Farm" written by George Orwell in 1945 is a parable about the Russian Revolution. It describes farm animals banding together to overcome their farmer, who exploits their work and products. So animals take control of the farm and create principles of Animal

Caring for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Care for Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune, chronic, progressive, disabling, inflammatory condition of synovial joints which follows a remitting and relapsing course. RA is more common in women than men and usually occurs between the ages 40-50, although it can affect at any age. Patient with RA may report increase in pain and stiffness in the morning that can last about thirty minutes to an hour and is often accompanied by swelling of some of the joints. The onset of RA will vary from person to person and may be rapid or occur over a period of time (Chamberlain, 2014). Pathophysiology Etiology RA is an autoimmune disease that affects the population worldwide. The etiology of RA is complex and uncertain, with both genetic and environmental factor that influence the predisposition (Madsen, 2011). It had been suggested that the disease is initiated in a genetically predisposed individual by the activation of a T-cell-mediated response to an immunologic tri

1984 - Chapter 4 Analysis

For some period of time, Winston has experienced how it was to be tortured. Therefore, when he has been moved to a more comfortable room where he has more space to think and freshen his mind, as the torture eases. The passage shows that Winston is "writing down the thoughts that came into his head" and the first slogan is "FREEDOM IS SLAVERY" almost without pausing this gives an expression that he rushes his mind to think in that essence. So with a continuous way of thinking he restricted his mind to think forward and not looking back and changing his mind to his old beliefs, so then he immediately writes the second slogan which is "TWO AND TWO MAKE FIVE" it is rather bizarre or unexpected because, those were the things that he opposes to. And there is when he began to assess himself in order to think the way the Party wanted him to behave. It was clear that he made the decision by forcing his own thought

Strategic Management Principles and Pratices

Introduction The helicopter services industry in Trinidad and Tobago is a market with many stakeholders, but very few providers. Some of these stakeholders include, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago (GOTT), National Gas Company (NGC), EOG Resources, British Gas and many more petroleum and natural gas companies that operate on a short and long term basis within Trinidad and Tobago. Among the leading providers are the National Helicopter Services Ltd (NHSL) and Bristow Caribbean Limited. This paper will look into the NHSL company to critically analyse the strategy used by the company to become one of the leaders of helicopter services not just in Trinidad and Tobago, but regionally. The paper will also justify what are some of the strategic options that can be taken to sustain growth, profitability and competitive edge within the aviation market. History of NHSL National Helicopter Services Limited (NHSL) formerly the Air Division (Helicopter Unit) of the Ministry of National Secur

The History of New York

New York is a city that has undergone various changes throughout history to become what it is today. This is seen from the ancient times when the Dutch make the Governors Island their base of operations in 1964. The base then grew so fast that after one year they turned it into a fort signifying the tremendous change in the island. They even had to cross the water from the island to the port (Paumgarten). The change is also evident in the change of ownership of the Nutten Island in 1937 from the natives to the Wouter Van Twiller after purchasing it. He built a mansion and looked after his goat but later returned to Holland after being summoned due to incompetence where the island ownership was back to the public. It then switched ownership to the colonial governors, Dutch and then the British Lord Cornbury. Possession then passed to Continental Army after the Lord went to prison, then to the state o

Gender Roles as Perpetuated by the Media

The intended audience for this paper would be the instructor and also my classmates. The proposed assignment was to choose an issue that I feel the audience needs to be informed about and relay this information to the audience. The more narrowed scope of this essay is to inform the audience of how gender roles are taught and perpetrated by the media as a whole, but on television in particular, but also from a more sociological aspect or viewpoint. Thoughts and opinions are expressed, most often, from the viewpoint of a symbolic interactionist. While gender itself is a universal idea, what constitutes a person as masculine or feminine changes with the culture, and also the times. Many other social issues, such as racism, for example, are far more prevalent in some regions than in others. Gender roles, and their often complicated consequences are present in virtually every society on earth. Their prevalence alone makes them one of the most important social problems we can discuss as

Deviance and Feminism

Norms and deviance shape everyday culture. A norm is something usual, typical, or standard. Deviance is any behavior, practice, or condition that results in disapproval, hostility, or sanction. It describes actions that violate social norms and are frowned upon (Chambliss, William J., 129). Every society has its own values, and a sense of what is right and wrong. Regardless of modern developments, theories of deviance still contain a very large gender bias. Male supremacy has been prevalent in many societies throughout history. The Bedouins, a typically Muslim nomadic group of the Arab deserts, are a patriarchal society. In their culture, men are highly respected; for example, when a male guest shows up at a family's home, every female

Fast Food - Leading Children Astray

We all know that fast food is really bad for us, but we still eat it. We know all the statistics and we still eat it, partly because it is tasty, but also due to the fact that is readily available and convenient. Fast food is not an everyday choice but ,on occasion, it is a nice, greasy treat. Under no circumstance would we eat it every day. Food industries target our fast pace lifestyle with advertisements of delicious food and the continence of obtaining it. We have a choice and still give in a lot of the time, but what about our young people? Imagine the fast food industry as the Pied Piper and our nation's children as the rats being lead to an unhealthy life style. The piper used a flute to lead the rats and in the same way the companies use advertisements to reel in our children. These companies rely heavily on advertisement to reel in their young customers. Our children are constantly being bombarded with advertisements that have been strategically placed where kids will surly see th

Forced Mobility and Energy Resources

Introduction Mobility is an event that is perceived by many as beneficial to the accumulation of new relationships, experiences, and opportunities; however, this may not always be the case. In classifying a mobility event as 'beneficial,' a crucial component that must be determined is whether or not it is voluntary or involuntary for the parties involved. Many bodies of power, such as governments working in conjunction with transnational corporations, have forced the movement of individuals from areas that they would have otherwise wished to remain, either for its importance to their culture, community, or to their economic livelihood. One may ask then, what could be the justification for forcing mobility?, as this action, in many cases, has been seen to consequently cause turmoil for the population being forced to move. This paper will argue that a key driver of forced mobility is the increasing desire for energy production and resource extraction, which is propelled by a neolib

Why EQ is More Important than IQ

1. For centuries intelligence has been thought to be what separated humans from animals. The ability to reason and continue to learn and better himself has been the standard that we measure all creatures against. However, in recent times the idea that emotion rather than intellect could be the fine line between man and significantly lower forms of life has become popular. Emotional Quotient (EQ) is a way to measure how a person recognizes emotions in himself, herself or others and manages these emotional states to work better as a group or as a team. Intelligent Quotient (IQ) is a value that indicates a person's ability to learn, understand and apply information and skills in a meaningful way. One of the major differences between EQ and IQ is what part of person's mental abilities they measure: understanding emotion or understanding information. The book "Emotional Intelligence" which is written by Daniel Goleman in 1996 suggested that Emotional Intelligence is might actuall

Parenting in The Glass Castle

The Glass Castle portrays poor parenting throughout the text. Although Jeanette and her siblings had to deal with their parents' selfishness, inability to provide stability for their children, and the lack of supervision to their children, the walls children were able to go against their odds and break away from what could have turned into a cycle of poverty. To start off with Rose Mary, the mother, and Rex, the father, both exhibits selfishness. One prime example of Rose Mary's selfishness would be her hiding food from her children while they basically starving. "We had nothing to eat we were trying not to think of food, mom kept disappearing under the blanket. Brian yanked the covers back next to mom was one of those huge family-sized Hersey chocolate bars. She'd already eaten half it" (174). Rose Mary is able to feed herself while her children are hungry and not feel any type of guilt about this action. Another example that brings Rose Mary's selfishness to light would be

Tour of the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH)

The night before our much awaited tour is the feeling of excitement but I'm a little bit nervous too because we will meet people with mental disorders and to see what life they have inside the mental hospital and of course how we will be going to interact with them. And it's so interesting. And this is the day. It's March 26 when I experienced a very memorable event. Even though it's my first time to go to mental hospital, I felt very happy and very excited. Before the bus arrive at National Center for Mental Health, there are lots of things that came into my mind. Asking questions to myself like "What's inside the mental hospital?", "How do they interact with each other?" And there's one thing that always come up to my mind when I hear "Mental Hospital"- "Kapag mental hospital, parang lalong lumalala ang mga pasyente dahil mga baliw din ang kasama nila." And our adventure started. We went to National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) that is est

Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase

In 1803, Thomas Jefferson purchased the territory of Louisiana from France. Jefferson original plan was to purchase New Orleans and West Florida from France, but things took a twist and he purchased all of Louisiana instead. When Jefferson first wanted to purchase New Orleans and West Florida, he sent Robert R. Livingston to make a deal with France. But there was a complication and France soon realized that Louisiana was meaningless for them. They soon decided to sell the whole territory to the United States. It was sold for about $15 million dollars [ CITATION Mar l 1033 ], the cheapest land ever. This was known as the Louisiana Purchase. There were advantages and disadvantages to the Louisiana Purchase for President Jefferson, which were: more land but more people, what congress said and what the constitution said, in debt or not, and what the Indians wanted and what the United States wanted. Jefferson wanted to make to expand the United States. When the opportunity came up, he did
