Inside the Films of Richard Linklater

The year is 1991. A twenty-eight year old film club Austin hipster named Richard Linklater is shooting his second feature film, Slacker. Six years prior, Linklater co-founded "The Austin Film Society" where mentors such as New York City critic George Morris were able to teach film. Despite being a college dropout, Richard Linklater took all of this alternative education and community and made a film that includes a cast of characters familiar both with the movie theater and the movie camera. The explicit references to filmmaking and film viewing is a chorus that subtly runs through Slacker, as well as in Waking Life, and Boyhood; however there are additional implicit references to the concepts of filmmaking and film viewing in these films as well. For the past century, watching film has been a growing element of our culture, with new approaches to the medium arriving every year. In what could be considered an "experimental" film, Slacker is a relatively narrative-l

Keeping the Redskins' Team Name

In Ilya Shapiro's article "Loss for the Redskins, loss for free speech," published in USA Today on July 10, 2015, he address the use of Native American slurs in Washington, DC's NFL team name and trademark. Throughout the paper there are sound and logical arguments that appeal to the audience who may also be informed. Shapiro appears to be knowledgeable about the law including the First Amendment and how free speech should apply to the protection of names and logos used for team sports. USA Today is a nationally distributed newspaper whose intended audience are middle class citizens. While Shapiro's arguments may have an effect on like-minded readers sharing his opinion, most consumers of this publication may not pursue any further ventures into this topic after reading this article. There is no call to action to bring about change for this topic nor does Shapiro offer any suggestions of how to contribute to the debate. "Shapiro is a senior fellow in constitutional s

Universal Themes in The Great Gatsby

In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald utilizes many universal themes to make a classic novel, explaining the life in 1920's. In the novel, well-off citizens live everyday without care, celebrate every weekend by getting drunk and overall just live a reckless lifestyle. The way these people live is represented in the novel by Fitzgerald, who emphasizes the life of Nick Carrway, a single stockbroker living in New York, and shows us the world of the rich through his point of view. "Significant writers in the Twenties were above all dedicated to the imposing task of pointing out the error of living in terms of obsolete values-however useful those values might have been in the past (Trask 3)." Through Carrway's eyes, he uses different styles of satire to describe these characters throughout the text. Satire is seen, as humor, irony, exaggeration, and use of sarcasm to criticize other people's actions and lighten the situation in this book. "Satire" is defined as the u

The Bhagavad Gita

The Bhagavad Gita is one of the most read and studied religious texts in history since it introduces core teachings of Hinduism through a story, which is laced with different lessons that help devotees understand dharma. The Gita, like most significant religious scripture, is a heavily discussed since the original text in Sanskrit allows for several different interpretations of the same text. The nuances in translation do little to taint the message of the 700 verses about the samsaric cycle and the karma that a soul must pay off over several lifetimes. The Bhagavad Gita starts off by introducing the blind king, Dhritarashtra, who asks Sanjaya about the battle that will take place between the king's son, Duryodhana, and Arjuna. This opening line introduces the reader to one of the obstacles that Arjuna must overcome: Arjuna must fight against his uncle, the king, and his cousin Duryodhana in order to take back control of the kingdom that is rightfully his brothers. The Pandavas are outnumbered yet Arjuna asks Krishna to ride him into battle. Arjuna becomes hesitant to fight against his own family for a

Film Overview - The Black Hole

People always say that a man's necessities can be satisfied but never the greed. But how strong can greed really mean to him? When the protagonist discovers that the black hole could satisfy all of his wants, he becomes fearless. All of a sudden, the carefulness and concerns from before diminishes as he is driven by greed. The short film "The Black Hole" starts with the sound of a duplicating photocopier. The main protagonist's sighing sound, the sound of him kicking the photocopier, the irritated emotions on his face and the overall dull grey and black scale of the film all contributes to the frustrated and impatience's feelings of this short film. As the camera tracks toward the man, the overall costumes, makeup and hairstyle suits an average male between 25-35 years of age very well. Specifically, his business office attire of a worn out and messy white shirt, tie, black trouser and leather shoes all reminds the audience a typical working individual doing his daily wor

Short Story - Never Let a Freshman Take Your Spot

"I don't know why we became best friends. I'd trust Satan before I'd ever trust you again." Delaney and Kiara were best friends and nothing or anything could break their bond or at least that's what we thought; let's flashback to three weeks ago before the rift between Delaney and Kiara. Kiara and Delaney were both juniors in high school and they both were on the varsity basketball team. Kiara was a tall and skinny with short blonde hair while Delaney was the total opposite. Some may say they both were decent basketball players and that they both could join the WNBA. Delaney and Kiara were only a few days apart and they think that God put them that way for a reason. Delaney and Kiara were SpongeBob and Patrick when it came to their friendship. They might have had some bumps and bruises here and there but together they were an unstoppable force. If you said something harsh about or to Kiara just know that Delaney would be there and she would have her friends back. The two girls became friends in

One Child by Torey Hayden

Silence. Silence is all I have after finishing the book "One Child," by Torey Hayden. This book was beautifully written and took me on an emotional roller coaster. The beginning of this book Hayden brought the reader into her old, squished and inadequate classroom like we were right there beside her. She descriptively described the way the room was set up, exactly how many desks, chairs, bookshelves, and windows there were in this long narrow "classroom". This long narrow room became home for nine very different children. This new home for the students became an inspiring and discouraging place Torey. While reading the first section of this book I was astonished by the amount of control Torey had on her students, minus Sheila in the beginning of it all. All eight students, Torey had begun the year with, were clam, attentive and eager to learn. Torey had their full attention because she had developed a trusting relationship, a relationship that was rooted in her love for them

The Relationship Between Literature and Society

Literature itself has no defined meaning. In the beginning introduction of Literary Theory: An Introduction, Eagleton states numerous definitions of literature to prove the point that there has yet to be one specific definition. Eagleton's definition of literature involves a text that is written in a language that sounds different from the reader's one: "If everyone used phrases like 'unravished bride of quietness' in ordinary pub conversation, this kind of language might cease to be poetic" (5). Eagleton's definition connects literature and society by giving the reader the responsibility of creating their own definition, "the definition of literature [is] up to somebody [who] decides to read, not to the nature of what is written" (5). Through Eagleton's example, we are then introduced to society and its impact on literature. The influences of literature are universal and essential for society. To understand how society and literature relate, it is crucial to und

When Schools Extinguish Creativity

I believe Sir Ken Robinson makes an excellent point. I have seen on multiple occasions many highly intelligent people are put down because the education system simply doesn't favor their talents. Hundreds of years ago, subjects of academia such as mathematics, science, and language were set aside for only the elite to study. The arts was an excellent place for the common man to thrive. Being an artist was once something that held a high amount of esteem and pride. If we continue on this path of emphasizing mental skills, our culture will be lost to formulas and equations. But more importantly, knowledge will no longer hold any value. What's the point of knowing that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell if it doesn't mean anything special to hold that information. Especially because that information is just plain arbitra

The Penelopiad and The Souls of Black Folk

Throughout this essay, there will be an analysis of the context between the two stories The Penelopiad and The Souls of Black Folk. The attraction of the author's interpretation of Penelope and Odysseus, along with the intellect of irony is the primary interpretation of this essay. The readers of these two stories must appreciate the epics of both. Within the poem The Odyssey, Odysseus is construed as the hero that eventually returns to his wife, Penelope. After conquering Poseidon, Odysseus is plans to make a fourteen-year journey across the Mediterranean Sea; the journey that stands between his family and home that consists of overcoming the curse. Many of the suitors insist that Odysseus is dead while Penelope patiently awaits his arrival. The story The Penelopiad is told through the multiple aspects of Penelope's life. The original tale of Odysseus overturns while the essential style is accustoming. The reader begins to distinguish the original fairytale structure of the story. From the two different viewpoints of The Penelopiad, they are f

Debate Paper - Occupational Health

Introduction Safety in a workplace is important because it prevents injuries and illnesses from hazardous substances for the employees. Employers are supposed to implement safety policies and precautions to reduce physical, chemical and other workplace hazards that may occur. Employers are to make sure each employee's health is not at risk while working. The controversy about whether implying safety polices is actually keeping the amount of injuries to a minimum is a debate. Employees may follow protocol for precarious circumstances but it does not always prevent people from being incapacitated. People begin to wonder if safety measures are justly being used in the workplace and if the safety procedures are effective. How does workplace safety procedures affect employees' health? This question arises as people begin to wonder if safety polices are used efficiently. Cause of Injuries Occupational injuries are determined by working circumstances and the aptitude of workers to deal with

Fundamental Citizen Rights in India

Introduction Fundamental Rights is a charter of rights contained in the Constitution of India. It guarantees civil liberties such that all Indians can lead their lives in peace and harmony as citizens of India. These include individual rights common to most liberal democracies, such as equality before law, freedom of speech and expression, and peaceful assembly, freedom to practice religion, and the right to constitutional remedies for the protection of civil rights by means of writs such as habeas corpus. Violation of these rights result in punishments as prescribed in the Indian Penal Code or other special laws, subject to discretion of the judiciary. The Fundamental Rights are defined as basic human freedoms that every Indian citizen has the right to enjoy for a proper and harmonious development of personality. These rights universally apply to all citizens, irrespective of race, place of birth, religion, caste or gender. Aliens (persons who are not citizen

Life Writing Theory and Practice

On 12th Baisakh 2072, my cell phone rang at 8 pm. "Hello", I responded. "Madhav, we have planned to be gathered at this night at the field of Tribhuvan University; you should come at Naya Bazzar, we are waiting you here", Kaji was speaking. All the people of Kathmandu valley had become so frightened and they were out of control due to the disastrous earthquake. Many of them had lost their family members, relatives, nearest and dearest on the hand and on the other hand they had lost their homes and rented rooms too. Luckily, all my family members, friends, relatives, nearest and dearests one were safe and nothing had happened to my friends' family too. There was not safe to live inside the home because the houses were cracked and we were facing terrible aftershocks too. I was also staying out of home in an open space with my home mates, planning to have drinks to avoid the tremor of earthquake from our psychology. Again Mailo called me, "Oh Kaka, do fast come.&q

Pursuing and Living a Dream

As children we are told to dream big and nothing is out of your limits. "You can do anything you set your heart to" is what we are conditioned to believe. But didn't we all have dreams of what we would be when we were older. Doctors and lawyers, princesses and princes, hunters and vets, teacher and judges. We had, we have so many dreams but why don't we all pursue them? Is it that we are scared of failure? Or was it those very few that brought us back down to this earth with the biggest thump that our wildest dreams were crumbled beneath us. The contradictory messages that we are fed first as very young children, encouraged and urged us to believe in the impossible, but then the messaged delivered to us as we grow older that we need to be realistic. We can't all be what we once wished to be. We were told, 'maybe don't dream so big, remember, this is the real world' and 'no, seriously what do you actually want to be?' They were the broken souls that brought so man

Being an Ally to Transgender Coworkers

When I was fifteen years old, I had both my first job – working as a cashier in a local supermarket – and my first acquaintance with a trans* coworker. "Tamara," who had worked there for years, had transitioned on the job, and many of the long-time employees and customers had previously known her as "Keith." She also had the unfortunate distinction of having transitioned later in life – when I met her, she was around her mid-to-late forties – and had thinning hair, a five 'o'clock shadow, and linebacker shoulders. To say that "passing" presented a challenge for her would have been a serious understatement. Even now, understanding of the trans* experience is limited at best; back in the late nineties when Tamara embarked on her journey it was almost a foreign concept to people, especially in my Central Jersey suburb. At least from what I can remember, my coworkers and I were actually pretty polite to Tamara (more so, in fac

The Existence of God

Many arguments have been presented both for and against the existence of God and have been a very debatable question for many centuries. So what or better yet, who exactly is 'God'? Each religion has its own definition of God. This world has over 350 religions in this world, meaning there are more than 350 gods in this world. But in this essay, I will focus on the Christian god. The Christian God has three separate identities including the Son, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. Christians believe that God created their world from the very beginning. Who do you think created this earth and the whole universe? This is another question that has been around for centuries. Till this day, nobody knows the real scientific answer for it. Now I will be discussing the different arguments between the existence and the non-existence of God using different theories to support each argument. St. Thomas Aquinas (1224 – 1274) was philosopher, theologian, and Dominican priest, also known as

A Far Cry From Africa by Derek Walcott

Introduction Derek Walcott's "A Far Cry from Africa," published in 1962, is a painful and jarring depiction of ethnic conflict and divided loyalties. The opening images of the poem are drawn from accounts of the Mau Mau Uprising, an extended and bloody battle during the 1950s between European settlers and the native Kikuyu tribe in what is now the republic of Kenya. In the early twentieth century, the first white settlers arrived in the region, forcing the Kikuyu people off of their tribal lands. Europeans took control of farmland and the government, relegating the Kikuyu to a subservient position. One faction of the Kikuyu people formed Mau Mau, a terrorist organization intent on purging all European influence from the country, but less strident Kikuyus attempted to either remain neutral or help the British defeat Mau Mau. The ongoings in Kenya magnified an internal strife within the poet concerning his own mixed heritage. Walcott has both African and European roots; his g

A Look at Modern Society

As we know, we all are living in the modern society in today's world. People are choosing different types of education degrees, getting different kinds of jobs, taking a variety of transportation, tasting food from other countries, learning the news from the world through the internet media every day. We already get used to the way we live now but maybe some people will have such doubts: what kind of society that is before the modern society and how did the ancient people live? The following essay will compare the difference between traditional and modern society, specifically focusing on the change of family pattern, the role of women in society, child labour, mass consumption and other relevant aspects. By analyzing those characteristics of the two kinds of societies, it will become obvious that modern society has been more advanced than traditional society. In the first place, family pattern has huge difference between traditional and modern society. In traditional society, family

Causes and Symptoms of Shyness

Shyness impacts nearly every single person in the world and half of the world's population describe themselves as being shy, and between seventy-five and ninety-five percent of people have experienced shyness at some point in their lives. (Carducci 4). Many people think that it is not a serious matter but I think otherwise. My topic for this essay is about shyness and my research question for this essay is "How does shyness affect a person's identity development"? I have chosen this topic because I was a very shy person growing up. When I was a kid I hardly talked to anyone and was not very happy because I did not have a lot of friends, because of my shyness. I want to show my readers that shyness is a serious matter and that people who are not shy are more successful in life. People who are shy are usually sad and are more prone to depression than people who are not. I want people to know that shyness does nothing positive for them and that in order to really be happy and li

Musical Instrument Overview - The Trumpet

ABSTRACT This project is written on the trumpet, one of the most versatile instruments invented. This piece consists of the introduction and a discussion section. The discussion section will identify the various points that will be elaborated upon as well as providing the main bulk of the project. Above all this writing piece will educate its reader in the various aspects of the trumpet, furthering their knowledge as well as well as giving them the opportunity to discover the glorious and effulgent world of the instrument that is the trumpet. Here follows a quote by Tony Guerrero, a well-known jazz trumpeter, producer and song writer and above all, musician. "When you hold your trumpet in your hand, you may not realize that you're really holding much more than just a musical instrument – you're holding a part of world history. The trumpet has been around for thousands of years and has played a crucial role in nearly every civilization on earth." – Tony Guerrero (I

The Consequences of Pearl Harbor

In the morning of 7th December in 1941 at approximately 7:45 am, a surprise bombing attack on the United State's Pacific Fleet military base in Hawaii, by the Japanese Navy was conducted. Over 2,500 people were killed and 1,000 had casualties. 18 of America's ships were either destroyed or damaged and almost 300 airplanes were hit. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was a relevant event in history because it caused the US to declare war on Japan and quickly prompted countries to pick sides during World War Two. For awhile there had been tension between Japan and America, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, officially was the boiling point for America who was initially neutral, but chose to join the Allies and declare war on Japan. Ten years before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese, longed for a empire and in September 1931, began scouting and scheming to take over countries in Asia. The Japanese, first began their quest for countries in the region then known as Manchuria, which now, is more

Erikson and Identity Crisis

The well-used term "identity crisis," originates from Erik Erikson's fifth stage, identity versus confusion, in his eight stages of epigenetic personality development. Presumably occurring during late adolescence, the successful resolution of this crisis develops a healthy identity and a strong sense of fidelity. If not resolved successfully, this may result in confusion about one's role and place in the present and future life experiences (White, Hayes, Livesey, 2013). Developmental psychologist, James Marcia (1994, 2006), has extended on Erikson's stage five theory by developing his ego identity status paradigm. His model has been widely used as a means to assess Erikson's ego identity formation theory, which has received much criticism because of its lack of scientific ground. Marcia's extensive research finds that identity is formed through two dimensions, crisis/exploration, and commitment, in four different areas: politics, religion, occupation and interpersonal relationships. Based on the presence or absence of crisis/exploration and commitment, Marcia was able to identify a continuum of four different identity statuses: diffusion (no exploration or

Principles of Management Ethics

Principles of Management Ethics When it comes to ethics we know it as a code of moral principles. Values, that oversee our personal behaviors or even a group with regard to what is right and what is wrong. Ethics sets the requirements for what's good or bad with decision making as well. Overall, subordinates may have different opinions about most ethical views correct or incorrect performances that pertain to a situation. Moreover, managers usually come across situations where it's difficult, for them to come to a decision that is right for him and the subordinate. In addition, managers face a, disconnect between the bosses and the organization. At times, managers don't have the fortitude to stand up and take action not to bring un- necessary attention to them-selves or might risk losing their jobs. Ethics to my understanding is when behaviors are compared with and driven by the laws and by all means free choice. According to the textbook understanding management on page 112, Ethics

Peoples' Perceptions of Industrialized Agriculture

Summary Nowadays industrialized food has deeply influenced people's life all over the world. With the development of technology, the grain output has increased a lot and freed more and more people from hunger. However, different people hold different views about the modern technologies of agriculture such as the organic foods and genetically modified foods. Form the investigation of five people with different cultural backgrounds and ages, I draw a few conclusions of people's views about industrialized food and the modern technologies: 1. Starvation still exists in many places of the world. 2. People all support the organic food, thinking that the organic foods have more nutrition, better flavor and less pollution by pesticides and fertilizers. 3. Culture, technical level and food policies of a country really influence people's perceptions about the new technologies and the safety of food supply. People form developed country believe their food supply is safe while people from China a

Patterns in Marriage and Family

1. Introduction Marriage and family are key structures in many social orders. While the two phenomena have truly been nearly connected in most society, their association is getting to be more difficult. The relationship among marriage and family is a fascinating theme of study to sociologists. What can we understand by the term "marriage"? Well, this term has been defined by several sociologists at several times in history and for many societies. Out of hundreds of definitions for the term marriage provided by sociologists, the one we are referring here is [ CITATION Gen l 1033 ]; "A socially approved sexual and economic relationship between two or more persons that is assumed to be permanent and includes mutual rights and obligations." Getting married is a legally and socially recognized status that is actually a contract between the concerned persons (usually two). Traditionally, when two or more persons get married, that means they are in a sexual relationship an
