A Northern Light and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Timeless Themes in Literature: A Northern Light & A Tree Grows in Brooklyn The value of literature is immense. Literature exposes readers to new ideas and causes us to think. This is can be done through literature's timeless themes. A Northern Light and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn share the same theme: education is important. These two books include characters with a strong desire towards education for themselves and others. A Northern Light is a book about a young girl named Mattie Gokey. Mattie lives in a small town where money is scarce and working hard on the farm is a way of life. She steps up to the "mother" position, taking care of her three younger sisters and father after the passing of her own mother. Mattie believes in the importance of education. Her desire to want to further her education is evident. In chapter nine, Mattie says, "Weaver and I had spent most of the year preparing for our exit examinations. We are going to take the hardest ones." (Donnelly, pg 59). Mattie kept attending school and working hard while most kids her age had already dropped out to work on the farms. This shows her determination towards school and how strong her des

Prisons and the Goal of Resocialization

The present paper aims to discuss the role of prisons in the resocialization of the people kept in the incarcerated after their turned out to be guilty of committing some offence and the announcement of sentence against them from the court of law. The study will be conducted in the light of Conflict, Structural functional and Interactionsit perspectives in order to define and determine the role played by prisons in the rehabilitation of the offenders. The Paper It is a fact beyond suspicion that every social establishment of the world has introduced law and judicial systems in order to maintain order within its jurisdiction. As a result, the individuals found guilty of committing crimes are arrested, tried at the court of law and if found guilty, the criminals are restrained in the prison houses in order to punish and penalize the offenders on the one side, and protect the society by discouraging the criminal acts on the other (Siegel, 2008:471). The prisons are regarded to be reforma

Family, Nature and Nurture

My family was a middle class family, we were not rich, but we were not poverty stricken either. My childhood was filled with happy times, such as family and social gatherings. We went to church every Sunday, which was usually followed by big a family dinner. When I think back on those times, there was never a dull moment. As children the only responsibilities we had were to keep our rooms clean, do well in school, and take care of our 4-H animals. Other than that we just enjoyed being kids. My father always said to "enjoy your childhood, because when you become an adult you will have to work for everything you have." I think that my understanding of self and gender began when I was about 10 or 11 and I realized that most of my girlfriends we into wearing dresses and hair ribbons and such. I was kind of a tom-boy up until that time so I was usually in jeans with my hair pulled back into a pony tail. I wanted to be like the other girls and wear pretty dresses and such, so that was the time that I became a little more interested in the girlie things, I would also have to say that that was th

Beowulf - Strength in Battle

In the epic story Beowulf, the epitome of the character Beowulf faced three battles in which tested him in areas of power, weakness, and death. Beowulf was known as a courageous warrior in so many different situations. Throughout the story of Beowulf the reader can depict from the battles that Beowulf dealt with finding his true power during his battle with Grendel, the adversities of weakness with the battle with Grendel's mother, and then the ultimate battle which was his death which resulted in the birth of a new hero. Beowulf was considered a hero for many reasons. In his youth, he displayed strength and courage as defined by the Germanic heroic code that showed loyalty, pride, and courtesy. Even though Beowulf grew up as somewhat a king in training, in his youth he never stopped showing the noble characteristics that were needed for a genuine and dedicated warrior. Beowulf showed several reflections of help for the needy and willing to sacrifice his life for the benefit of others

Requiem for a Dream - Substance Abuse Paper

After watching the film, Requiem for a Dream by director Darren Aronofsky (2000), my initial reaction was thinking how depressing and lonely life must be for an addict. At that moment I realized the importance of reflecting on my own values and biases prior to working with substance abuse clients. Bracketing my own beliefs and understanding my cultural identity is a step towards attaining multicultural competency (Brooks, 2015, p.15). The protagonists in the film; Harry, Sara Goldfarb, Marianne, and Tyrone, experience addiction in various ways. Their relationships with each other appeared to be negatively affected by their addiction and each experience consequences to their addiction in different ways. As a counselor, I would need to consider each of the protagonists' cultural background, obtain a clear understanding of the substances that are abused, and bracket my own values in order to provide goals of treatment. In the film, Harry is a white male character whose age is not reveal

Costco - A Strategic Review and Assessment

Introduction Consumer choices for products and services differ greatly. Not unlike the consumer changes and differences, our retail marketplace has also evolved. Long gone are the five and dime stores, general hardware stores, corner pharmacies or even small town candy stores. Even grocery needs are fulfilled differently today than previously. It is likely that the changes from just a few decades ago will continue over the next ten years or more. One significant change has been the growth of the warehouse club – a discount retail model that has captivated the buying public. The warehouse club market is a 438 billion dollar industry that achieved 4.5% annual growth rates from 2008-2013 (Everett, 2013). A market share leader in the warehouse and wholesale space, Costco Wholesale Corporation, operates with a successful strategic approach. The work herein documents Costco's strategies, links to other strategic concepts, the firm's success, the industry maturity level and expe

Nationalism and the Weimar Republic

Nationalism was an integral factor in the downfall of the Weimar Republic, which in turn ensured the failure of democracy in Germany during 1918-1934. The sense of loyalty and devotion to one's nation that the German people felt in their militaristic past, was ultimately devastated by the consequences of WWI. Nationalism hence became the driving force of many other factors that lead to the failure of democracy, including the Treaty of Versailles, the Reparations Bill and the occupation of the Ruhr. Several attempts to install nationalistic beliefs back into the government manifested itself into the violent Kapp Putsch by the right-wing nationalists and the Munich Beer Hall Putsch by the Nazi Party. The disillusionment felt by the people of Germany and their need to restore pride in their nation can thus be perceived as the most important factor, as it influenced many other events and ideas that led to the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Adolf Hitler. The shattering def

Film Summary - The English Patient

Many people would agree that desperate times lead to desperate measures. This is seen in many situations, involving friends, lovers and even strangers. In the film, The English Patient, Anthony Mingehella suggests that individuals often overlook the extremities of their actions when they are faced with unfamiliar circumstances. This is seen throughout many parts of the film, circling pieces of aggression, lies and revenge. In the film, Laazlo de Almasy, is portrayed as a handsome, smart man; he is a map maker and explorer in the Sahara desert. Almasy carries the book Herodotus everywhere he goes, showing his value of history. The book acts as a companion to Almasy, even surviving him through a disastrous plane crash. As Almasy is placed in circumstances of desperation, his character illustrates true feelings of aggression and fear towards those around him, as well as himself. During these times of uncertainty, we see that Almasy goes to great extremes to save Katherine, his beloved. Ka

Foreshadowing and Building Revelations

In "The Swimmer" and "The Purloined Letter," writers Cheever and Poe, respectively, employ foreshadowing before a significant plotline revelation. Their vastly unique applications of this literary device create heightened feelings of suspense, yet at the same time make the revelations predictable. "The Swimmer" subtly doles out it foreshadowing in the form of minute environmental clues that slowly drag the reader away from light comedy into a nightmarishly believable revelation. "The Purloined Letter" provides an obvious foreshadowing in the beginning, so that when arriving at the revelation readers can only chuckle at themselves for not seeing it coming. Early in "The Swimmer" Neddy establishes that the name of the "quasi- subterranean stream that [curves] across the country" is Lucinda (Cheever 174). As keen readers will o

Food Chains, Webs and Pyramids

I currently am a social studies teacher at a special act school for emotionally disturbed, delinquent teens. For the sake of this lesson, I have chosen to create a science lesson for an imaginary inclusive 8th grade science class. Since the class I currently work in is a self-contained contained setting, I am pretending to teach a science class in the Bedford Central School district; which is my former place of employment. In 2014, there were a total of 1010 and 1394 students in Foxlane Middle School and Foxlane High school respectively. This accounts for 2404 students in the Bedford School Districts secondary education programs. These students are comprised from a very diverse population. White/Caucasian student make up the largest ethnicity represented by the student body with a 1579 students. Hispanic students make up the second largest ethnicity of the student body with a total of 548 students. Black and Asian students are almost tied for the third largest population of the secon

Conflicts in The Lottery

"The Lottery, " by Shirley Jackson is a story about a small town that participates in an annual untraditional lottery event. Traditionally, the word "lottery" usually involves winning something like money or prizes, but in this particular story, the untraditional lottery winning means someone will lose their life. Each head of household, usually a male, is require to draw a paper from a black box. The family representative who draws out the slip with a black dot will then redraw. This time, the black box contains enough white slips representing each member of the family minus one, which will be replacing with a slip containing a black dot. Whatever family member draws the paper with the black dot is the final winner but their winning will result in being stoned to death. Jackson's central idea is that the societies blindly follow traditions, cultural practices, and/or myths without questioning the validity or need of these traditions. Mrs. Hutchinson is a middle-aged h

To Die with Dignity

In October last year, there was a viral video going around on social media and even on the news about a woman who was raising awareness for death with dignity. Her name was Brittany Maynard, she was a 29 year old with terminal brain cancer that didn't want to go to her illness. She wanted to be able to die on her own terms surrounded by her family and her dog Charley. In order for her to be able to die on her own terms she and her family moved from California to Oregon. She and her family had to pack up everything they had because their home state didn't support death with dignity. Brittany didn't want to die from her brain cancer, from what her doctors told her it would be a painful and long process. After the move Brittany approached Compassion & Choices and volunteered to make a video to raise awareness about death with dignity. Brittany passed away on November 2, 2014 with her family and dog by her side. In the textbook the author brings up questions of whether or not this is considered a form of euthanasia, along with is it a morally justifiable practice. She mentions that euthanasia in

In Defense of Legalizing Marijuana

Marijuana is the most popular illegal drug in the country. According to drugpolicy.org, "an average of 65 to 70 million Americans currently smoke the drug." Ballot Measure 91, set to be voted on here in Oregon in November, legalizes personal possession of marijuana within specified limits. I feel that Measure 91 should be passed for many reasons, including, that marijuana is an effective medicine and it has the potential to generate millions of state tax dollars that could be used to help fund Oregon schools and infrastructure. It is also the cause of far less violence, death, and health issues than its legal partner, alcohol. There are many people in the US that believe marijuana use and possession should be against law, yet they see no problem with alcohol use. Perhaps what I have to report would make those who feel this way change their opinion about marijuana legalization. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that there are more than 37 thousand deaths per year from liver failure, alcohol poisoning, kidney failure, and

The Politics of Realism and Liberalism

William Shakespeare once said that "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players". It is well-known that it is almost impossible to play a game if one does not fully grasp the rules of such game. That is where the study of world politics comes into action, to help us understand the events happening around us on a daily basis. We develop our understanding of world politics by putting events within the context of theory to see blueprints and make generalizations about the conduct of international affairs. Realism, liberalism, world systems theory, environmentalism, feminism, islamism and constructivism help organize our views of world politics theoretically. What are the differences and resemblances among them? According to John Rourke, realism focuses on the self-interested promotion of the state and nation. Realists believe that for that main reason, conflicts among nations are unavoidable and basically only the strong will survive and win. Countries sho

Understanding Rhetorical Structures

Argument as an entity is the most fundamental piece of concept in the field of critical thinking. The imperative aspect of arguments to critical thinking is that it makes every Tom, Dick and Harry to familiarize with the "nitty gritties" that surround the term and its bearing to other basics of critical thinking. Notably, an argument refers to a set of statements or propositions that are designed to convey some convincing to listeners or readers of a given claim or any conclusion and which has in it, some reason or premise supporting the acceptance of the said claim. In any given scenario, our strongest of feelings and convictions about a given subject is not enough to dissuade or convince anybody else to conform or agree with our argument. It requires that our audience is met with the very reasoned and thoughtful arguments bearing in mind that they meet the threshold, just like being earnest is bei

Daddy's Little Girl

Growing up in a household of divorced parents definitely made an impact on my childhood and adult life, my father was a very difficult man to love and continue a relationship with; you never know who someone is until you experience their downfalls and learn things about their past. You live, you love and eventually you learn. From early on I knew that something wasn't right in my world, of course we loved my parents, but behind closed doors it was obvious somethings weren't right. Drinking was a problem, going out was a problem, fighting was a problem. When you are young you do not understand things as you would as an adult. You have to learn to live with what is being handed to you and take away as much as you possibly can so you do not grow up being in the same kind of situation you grew up in. My father was my best friend, daddy's little girl, to say I loved him was an understatement. You do not figure out until you are a teenager what really happens or what happened to end your

The most common eating disorders presented today in society are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. Making Choices in A&P

Sometimes it takes the smallest situations to show how big a person truly is. Sammy was unaware of the fact that this very day, was the day he would discover a back bone he never knew existed. In John Updike's "A&P", the author depicts a boy who lives an ordinary life and decides to dig deep within himself to stand up for what is right; not allowing his low position in the hierarchy to cloud his morale values. That key transition Sammy makes from a boy to a man relies on these three things: making a decision, dealing with the results of that decision, and moving forward in life; regardless of the outcome. Throughout our daily lives choices to made. Whether they are small or big, decisions could impact the whole dynamic of our daily lives. Although these three girls in bathing suits weren't exactly seeking attention, Sammy being so bored at work decides to use this moment to entertain himself. Sammy observes, "In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits. I'

Profiling a Serial Killer

Introduction The following material illustrates the profile of a possible serial killer of four given crime scenes that have specific patterns using profiling techniques to identify possible characteristics of the perpetrator. In the first crime scene, the victim is a female college student whose body was found outside her apartment near Cal State Northridge with no signs of outward trauma. The second victim is a young male college student who was found in an alley behind a campus cafe with his throat slashed. The third victim was suspected to be a female based on the skeletal remains found at the scene near the campus field equipment shed whose age is unknown. The skeletal remains suggest a possible stab or gunshot wound to the head. The fourth victim was a male college student found in his car slumped over the steering wheel in the auto campus maintenance shed with no visible wounds. The following victims were recently found in the above stated order over the period of about two wee

Drug Policies and the War on Drugs

The United States of America, a country that is often said to be the greatest nation in the world; a nation where opportunity does not cease to exist, and one that has a history of overcoming adversities that lie within its premises. It is ironically the same country that has been battling with what President Nixon first declared a "war on drugs." This war is a campaign by the United States government in an effort to end the production, import, sale, and consumption of illegal narcotics. The degree to which the war on drugs is being fought has been put to question due to the ineffectiveness of prohibitions and regulations that have been placed by the government. While it may appear that certain government actions adequately tackle the drug trade, it is obscure to many how deficient the efforts truly are at ceasing the drug market. With analysis of how drug policy evolved in the United States, it is safe to say that the war on drugs is indeed a failure, hypocritical and the c

Ecumenism in Australia

Ecumenism is a vital aspect of contemporary Australian society as it is the driving force for the unification that Jesus had wanted. God intended for one universal church however it was inevitable that this would not be the case. The Historical events of the Church such as the Dark Ages and Inquisition are examples as to why ecumenism is necessary these periods of time caused fights, death and discrimination aspect of society that Jesus had not desired. Sectarianism is the strong devotion to a particular sect or religion and can lead people to be unreasonable and unfair. The information, drastic period of change caused great controversy amongst the Christian faith and key people such as Martin Luther, John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli contributed to the different denominations of the Catholic Church. Anti-Discrimination and Freedom of Expression

Discrimination is treating someone differently due to their race, gender, or age. Discrimination, especially discrimination against colored man and women, has been around for a very long time. Only in recent times, many countries began to create anti-discrimination laws in order to stop discrimination. However, there are no laws restricting potentially offensive expressions. This leads to the question: should anti-discrimination laws restrict freedom of expression if what is expressed is potentially offensive for some people? First of all, we should look at the anti-discrimination laws and learn why they are in place. Anti-discrimination laws are in place in order to reduce the amount of discrimination happening in our society. History

The Shaping of America

Noble Cunningham's book mentioned two of the most important people who influenced politics and government in America after the independence. Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton were occupying important and sensitive position during that time in the American government. Thomas Jefferson, a man born on April, 1743 in a rich family that afford him an excellent education in Virginia (3). However, Alexander Hamilton was born in an uneducated poor family in West Indies on January 11, 1755 (3). Each one of these two politicians had conflict views on issues concerning government that were generated from the environment they lived in. As a result, each of them shaped a political party and was the head of that party. Jefferson was the head of the Democratic-Republicans, who aimed to increase people's task in the government while Hamilton represented the Federalists, who wanted to promote a strong central government to lead the country forward. Both of these political parties aimed to build a

Concepts of Bureaucracy

In the following paper I will show you concepts that relate to bureaucracy at work and give you a better understanding of these concepts and make them easier to identify. Aggregate is the term used to describe a collection of people who share a physical location, but do not have lasting social relations. We would identify this as people who are in the same place such as crowds, audiences, etc. In the article I believe aggregate is exemplified in the monthly meetings. The passage states "we have a monthly meeting with Jeff and he gives us a report of the district." I believe this passage applies due to the fact that, it is a crowd of workers meeting to get the report and after this it is back to work. They do not form lasting relationships here, it is all business oriented. Group, which can be identified as a family, fan group or in this case a grand jury. A group, is a collection of people who share some attribut
