Honor Killings and Discrimination in Africa and UK

Intolerance as stated in the Oxford Dictionary is "unwillingness to accept views, beliefs or behaviour that differ from one's own." Prejudice is feeling or having a negative attitude towards a certain person, group or groups. Prejudice can be towards class, age, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicities or stereotypes. Being prejudiced or intolerant is what one may think or feel towards a group whereas discrimination is when one may act upon these feelings, turning thoughts into actions. An example of this is the Steven Preddy and Martyn Hall case. They are an openly gay couple who were denied use of a double room by the hotel's Christian owners. The owners who, due to their religion, are prejudice to same sex couples acted upon their beliefs, disregarding current legislation (Equality Act 2010) making this an illegal act. This is prejudice turned to discrimination. In Tanzania, albinos are being persecuted and targeted by groups who believe them to be "gh

Case Study - Linear Programming Model

Introduction The case study is based on a Banana Republic Outlet Store located in Cypress, Texas. Banana Republic is part of a leading international specialty retailer with six brands – Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Piperlime, Athleta and INTERMIX – almost 3,700 stores and more than 150,000 employees. Gap Inc. founded by Doris and Don Fisher opened the first Gap store in 1969. The reason was simple. Don couldn't find a pair of jeans that fit. According to the Gap Inc. official website, "while many things have changed since 1969, the principles on which we were founded have stayed the same: creativity, delivering results, doing what's right and always thinking of our customers first." The case analyzes and examines the optimal sales of three top selling types of pants; Aiden Slim Fit Khaki pants (men), Emerson Chino pants (men) and Sloan Fit Ankle Pants (women) Ankle pants (women). Linear programming is an effective quantifiable tool used to assist operation ma

Wage Negotiations at Maritime Solutions Ltd.

In this justification report, negotiations outcomes between Management and Union Representatives of Maritime Solutions Ltd (MSL) will be discussed. The negotiations took place on the 26th of November 2014 soon after the employees of the company had threatened to go on strike. The skilled workers in MSL demanded a 60 pence pay rise increase per hour and an extension of the paid holiday period from 4 weeks to 5 weeks for those with 10 years' service or greater. The GOU representative and the shop steward were representing the interests of skilled workers to two service managers – the General Manager and the Human Resources Manager. At the end of the negotiation session, both parties reached an agreement. The negotiation steps will be explained and justified in this report. The agreement outcomes can be of interest, in particular, to the employees of MSL as they will be affected by the Managers' and Union Representatives' decisions. The Union was requesting a 60 pence per hour incr

Poe and the Motif of Madness

With his masterly art of depicting bizarre and mysterious atmosphere, Edgar Allan Poe is considered the most distinctive personage of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his short stories flooded with mystery and the macabre, Poe is recognized as one of the foremost masters of horror that United States has ever produced. One of the key components to his horror stories is the motif of madness which pervades almost all of his tales. There are many possible reasons why Poe so often employs the motif of madness. The aim of this essay is to discuss several possibilities why the motif of madness is frequently used in the short fiction of Edgar Allan Poe. In the essay "The Philosophy of Composition" Poe argues that work of literary art should attain unity of effect, which he view as a point of the greatest importance. Furthermore, in his review of Hawthorne's Twice Told Tales, he defends short story as preferable to the novel and states that the ideal short story should

The Growing Epidemic of Chronic Lyme Disease

Abstract Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the United States, and Europe. It has been migrating throughout the continents since 1976, after the discovery of the bacteria. There is no cure for the disease; however, there are antibiotic therapy treatments offered for different stages of Lyme disease. Most human cases are caused by the nymphal, or immature, form of the tick. The ticks are about the size of a poppy seed. Because their bite is painless, many people do not realize they have been bitten. If a tick is attached for thirty-six hours, it will have completely manifested within the victim, making them Borrelia burgdorferi positive when diagnosed through laboratory testing. There are three stages: early, recurrent symptoms with no sign of infection, and chronic stage. Chronic Lyme Disease symptoms can occur at random within months or years after your infection, but the symptoms are severe and might cause permanent damage to the nervous system, muscles, joints, an

Causes of Human Migration

Various factors drive people to migrate. There are three main pulling factors which attract people to emigrate from their homelands. Pull factors are defined as positive characteristics of a place which attracts people to migrate there, in order to enjoy the respective benefits offered. In my opinion, a wide range of economic opportunities are the most important pull factor. Compared to other pull factors such as better healthcare, education facilities, and political stability, a wide range of economic opportunities have the greatest impact on a potential migrant. Economic opportunities serve as the most significant factor in terms of impact on the migrant. A wide range of economic opportunities is one of the reasons which influences migration. People who migrate to more developed countries will experience generally higher wages, and an abundance of job opportunities to consider. Research has shown that in the United Kingdom, the minimum wage is about twice of the average wage earned

Haiti Doesn't Need Your Old T-Shirt by Charles Kenny

In "Haiti Doesn't Need Your Old T-shirt," Charles Kenny argues that dumping stuff that people no longer need to the poor is not an effective way to give charity. However, he introduces an issue regarding what type of charity is best and who should pay attention to it. By repeating the damage that inefficient charity causes, providing different negative examples and emphasizing what people really need to do about charity, Kenny educates businessmen and common people to give charity with sincerity instead of greed since they are all key players in constructing a perfect charity mechanism and win-win situation is impossible here. Using strong words to describe damages of inappropriate charity work, Kenny states that common people should pay attention to be altruistic when they are giving charity. In the beginning of the passage, Kenny illustrates an example which seems like a perfectly way to give charity. He makes this example look so reasonable by using words like "every

Art Review - Ten Possible Links and Rescue

The exhibitions "Ten Possible Links," by Matthew Ritchie and "Rescue," by Nick Cave, use different media and different types of installation presentations. We can see similarities in representational imagery, although there might be a big time gap in presentation and understanding of particular installations such as Matthew Ritchie's "Temptation of the Diagram" and Nick Cave's "Rescue". Looking at "Temptation of the Diagram", groups of mapped, digitized diagrams placed on the wall of the entrance between two rooms and going from one room into another room we are immediately attracted to it, wanting to get closer to it, to explore it and to see where it can take us. Starting in one and going into another room it is like a repeating cycle or never ending story. Although diagrams are representations of information and they usually look very neat and even simple sometimes, this one has a very confusing look. With thick lines going over thi

The Life of Harry S. Truman

In the story "One Tough Son-of-a-Bitch of a Man," McCullough describes what a wonderful president Truman is, but he also describes the many tough decisions Truman was faced with during his presidency. What was Truman's most difficult decision while in office? Why was this decision so hard for Truman to make? And did the "Lesson of Munich" have any effect on the way he viewed his decision? Well President Truman felt that his most difficult decision being in office was going to war with Korea, because he feared he might be taking the country into another horrible war, and finally, the "Lesson of Munich" put a great deal of pressure on everyone. Harry Truman was born in a small town in Missouri, and he grew up on a farm with his family. He read many books, played the piano, and wore glasses. He even memorized the eye exam board just so he could pass to get into the military. He then enlisted in the National Guard and fought during world war one. Truman, acco

Biography of Paul Cézanne

Cézanne was an innovative post-impressionist painter, and quite a troubled man. Tirelessly craving a better understanding of nature, he was constantly a la recherche. Every aspect of his lifestyle reflected his desire to achieve that objective: spending most of his time alone (away from his wife Hortense and son Paul), renting rooms or buying shelters in the middle of nature in the South of France, being self critical to the point of meditating for hours in between brush strokes, etc. As a result of living on the edge, he became quite psychologically unstable, pessimistic, and full of doubt in his late sixties. His inner conflicts reflected on his art, and this can be examined through comparison with works of contemporary impressionist artist Monet, Northern-Renaissance artist Bosch, and Dutch period painter Rembrandt. The Inscrutable is thought to have been painted between 1898 and 1900. Historians mention some correlation between some physiological aspects of Cézanne's

Culture and the Shaping of Society

Throughout the course, we have discussed many topics and points about Sociology. The key point of sociology is that we are all products of our societies. Personal life experiences shape who we become. From culture, social class, ethnic backgrounds to the neighborhoods we grew up in, we have be molded into who we are today. These things teach us who we are in society and how society functions. Culture, values, and society go hand in hand in making up who we are and who we will become. Culture has a big impact on how we fit in as individuals in society. Culture is ideas that shape the way a group lives. Television and internet shape the way we live; because of the Internet information is right there for us. The easy access makes us believe this is the way we should live life and that this is how everyone is living. Material Culture is a physical component; it reflects ideas of our nonmaterial culture. Our nonmaterial culture has no physical component; it connects to the ideas we live

Social Media and Social Development

"Social networking- generally a website (ex. Facebook, Myspace) where people can add "friends"and communicate with them through multiple ways such as leaving comments on posted pictures or blogs, or perhaps sending them a message that can read when they sign into the site at a later time."- Urban Dictionary. Social networking seems like a completely harmless matter, twitter especially; however this is not the case. It is everywhere, it has evolved from becoming an after school activity into an obsessive need to make sure you didn't miss anything. It makes one feel the need to constantly keep up with their peers' lives and never miss the latest gossip or dispute via Twitter. It can be helpful if used properly, however with the youth of America, it is simply being abused. It can control one's life, people put social networking before other things. Teachers believe that Twitter along with other social networking sites "are infantilizing the brain into the state

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Some people may not be the conventional 'beautiful' but there is still beauty in them. Shakespeare and Neruda were both the beholders of their women, and they loved them no matter what. Shakespeare and Neruda both take a different approach in describing the beauty of their women, and their affection for them. In their poems, "Mi Fea" and "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun" both poets show their affection towards the women by ridiculing their flaws and unattractive features. They show that love is deeper than the surface, that one can love more than just looks. These two poems are both love poems, but they are not your typical love poems, each take a different route than usual love poems do. In William Shakespeare's sonnet, "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun," he describes his mistress' flaws and faults. He compares her to other objects that are far more beautiful than her. Shakespeare uses imagery to point out the features his mistress is lacking in. He compares each of her featu

Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington

Booker T. Washington always had a longing for an education ever since he was a young boy. He went as far as comparing the opportunity to get into a schoolhouse with being allowed to study alongside boys and girls to that of living in paradise (4). Considering the fact that he was a slave for the first nine years of his life it was virtually impossible for him to earn a suitable development of knowledge by way of formal schooling. This all changed when the Emancipation Proclamation was set forth and schools in the South started to admit intelligent Negroes. Although he could not get an education right away, for the reason that he had to work in the salt mines with his step-father, he eventually climbed the steps on his journey to obtain one. This was all made possible by key figures in his life who he acknowledges in his autobiography, "Up From Slavery", who motivated and drove Washington to reach heights that he could have never imagined reaching. Significant people such as

The Importance of Teachers in Education

In today's world, education can take someone a long way. According to a study done at the University of Hawaii, a person with an associate's degree makes $400k more in their lifetime than a person with a high school diploma would. This is just the income gap between two of the lowest education certificates and it is enough to make people go back to school just to enhance their chances at being promoted or possibly even finding a better paying job. Some of these people going back to school have not had an instructor for years, in some cases even decades! As a result, this means that they are going to need all the help they can get and it all starts with their professors. Unfortunately, for students struggling, the help is not always there for them even though it should be. The reason for this is that sometimes they do not get the luck of the draw and are stuck with overworked or moody professors who often discourage students and make them unmotivated to learn. This is why it is crucial

Taoism - Meaning and Purpose in Life

"Providing meaning and purpose in life is a central role of religion." (Rossiter 2002.) Religion is a ready-made worldview or system of formal beliefs and structures that provides people with meaning, hope, stability, morals, guidance, support and spiritual fulfillment. The main purpose of religion is to give people answers to the main fundamental questions of life- who am I? Why am I here? Where do I come from? What happens when I die? Taoism (pronounced Daoism) is an ancient religion that originated in China over 2000 years ago. It can be described as an ancient tradition that consolidates a number of concepts and practices that make up the "Path", or "Way" of living. It provides followers of the religion with answers and meaning to life. The ongoing beliefs and philosophies of Taoism are sustained through rituals and sacred spaces, practices, deities and sacred texts. Taoism is based on the beliefs of nature corresponding with wisdom and practice, to achieve the way of l

Inclusive Education Setting and Service

Inclusive education means that "schools should accommodate all children regardless of their physical, intellectual, social, emotional, linguistic or other conditions" (UNESCO, 2001). In Australia, Disability Standards for Education 2005 under Disability Discrimination Act 1992 was formulated and to elaborate the legal obligations of education providers in relation to provision of education and training to students with disability as the same rights with dignity as other students in a supportive environment which values and encourages participation by all students (Disability Standards for Education, 2009, para. 3). The Department of Education also provides the comprehensive policies and guidelines for school practices against discrimination and toward social justice & equity, and for professional practice of all teachers to cater for diverse learners, whatever the level of their ability or disability, within regular education (Aniftos & McLuskie, n.d.). The trend toward inclusive education or whole schooling is likely to increase in recent years. McGregor

Stereotypes in The Mill on the Floss

George Eliot's The Mill on the Floss, tells the story of Maggie Tulliver's life as she leads with her passionate emotions through a time where a young girl had no true place in society. The novel encompasses many gender stereotypes that were alive during the nineteenth century. There are instances, however, where these roles are reversed or contrary to what one would come to expect. A clear example, is in Maggie Tuliver's character. Her features and behaviors foil that of a true Victorian woman while making her intelligence stand out to the reader. Eliot plays with the idea of physiognomy to highlight the faults in society's expectations, predominantly the expectations of women. Each of her ideals can be seen in the main characters, the most prominent case follows the young protagonist, Maggie. Eliot underline's Maggie's differences in the openings of the novel, by describing her features as contrastingly different from her family. Maggies's mothers side of the family is strikingly d

An Ethical Evaluation of Euthanasia

Most are familiar with the concept of 'putting an animal out of its misery' when it gets hurt, but what happens when a human life is struck with such tragic misfortune that the only way to find relief is putting that person out of his or her misery? Euthanasia has sparked quite the controversy, involving a broad scope of people affected such as patients, physicians, health care practitioners, lawyers, ethicists, and the general public. How does society learn to accept death as a viable option for patients in extreme pain? How does an institution of health justify a gentle procedure inducing death when being accused of murder? In this paper, the concepts of the right to die, death with dignity, and euthanasia vs. assisted suicide will be explored and dissected to show the dignity euthanasia can provide patients and the ethical justification of it. The core of euthanasia that scares society is death. Death is an inevitable fate that waits for all life at the e

Legal and Political Systems in Rwanda

Since the 1994 Genocide, Rwanda has undergone significant political and legal reforms that have been highly influenced by its colonial and postcolonial history. The now multi party semi presidential constitutional republic follows a civil law system that has its roots in the Belgian, and to an extent, the German civil law system, that has been moulded by Rwanda's own political and legal history. Currently, the Constitution is the supreme law in Rwanda, which was adopted on the 26th May 2003, containing major legislative and judicial reforms. Prior to WW1, Rwanda was a German colony, but upon German invasion of Belgium during the war, the Belgians retaliated by invading and seizing control over Rwanda in 1914. At the conclusion of the war, the League of Nations affirmed the existing state of affairs and Rwanda became an official Belgian colony. During this period of colonialisation, Belgian Authorities made all legislation governing the country, following their own civil and criminal

Network Security Measures and Recommendations

1.0. Introduction It is vital for any credit processing company to employ and invest in the most up to date security measures in order to tame cyber crimes. This will go along way in reducing lawsuits from banks, which may incur losses resulting from fraud and identity theft. After a thorough analysis of the company installed systems, the security measures put in place, the nature of the tasks handled and the general security of everything, I was able to deduce the loopholes and come up with the most appropriate findings and recommendation this report hopes to address and apply the most suitable mechanisms solutions that will be addressed. 2.0. The Bombing of Dresden

February 1945, over the course of three days nearing the end of the war, 800 British RAF and America USAAF bomber planes off-loaded 3,400 tons of explosives obliterating the people of Dresden. The event known as the Bombing of Dresden has always been named as one of the most controversial incidents and the single most destructive bombing of the Second World War. Why this act of genocide was committed, can only be told by the people in charge, nonetheless the stories of the survivors still horrifies and proves how inhumane war can be. Did the Bombing of Dresden follow the ethical right of conduct and stay just within retaining the rules of Jus in Bello? The closing of the Second World War was the upmost intent of the Allies, and all measures that would accelerate an ending, became preferred proposals. The Bombing of Dresden was such a proposal and the intension was to "hit the Germans where they feel it most, behind an al

Race as Viewed in Othello

For at least the last two hundred years, race has functioned as one of the most powerful and yet most fragile markers of social difference. Shakespeare uses the interplay of racial prejudice, and its religious and social significance to craft the corruption of Othello's relationship with Desdemona. William Shakespeare also uses juxtaposing colors through the use of animal imagery and racial slurs to show racial difference and illustrate the issue of race. As a black moor in a society of Venetians, Othello is subjected to racism stemming from three main sources. Prejudices held by the Venetian society as a whole are the first main source of racism encountered by Othello, followed by hate-inspired racism from the Iago, where he uses animal imagery to portray race. The final source of racism experienced by Othello is left vulnerable by his insecurities, Othello falls victim to racism, materializing within his own mind. These sources of racial prejudice evident throughout the play eventua

Neonatal Care at the Limits of Viability

The pregnancy results are in: there is a baby on the way! Over the next 40 weeks of gestation, a future parent is filled with different emotions. There are new hopes, big dreams, and many plans for the growing family. The child begins developing rapidly in the mother's womb; each week making important strides in his or her development. All too suddenly, those hopes are destroyed and parents are filled with desperation. Preterm labor has begun around the limit of the child's viability, generally 24 weeks. Parents are frightened and doctors are filled with factual information; to make a decision based on only one opinion is unthinkable. When it comes to preterm labor at the limits of viability, the decision whether to resuscitate the infant should be a joint decision between parents and healthcare professionals. In the 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, viability was established as a fetus being "potentially able to live outside the mother's womb, albeit with artificial aid [viabilit
