America's War on Sex

What I Learned This book was incredibly eye opening in that saying there is a war on sex is not slanderous or hyperbolic. In fact there are indeed a great many dangers and even casualties in this assault on everything from the act of having intercourse to educating young adults on the safest ways to be intimate with one another. Misinformation and censoring keep people from even learning the correct processes a body goes through to satisfy their needs. Described in "The Governments Attempts to Control Your Access to the Net" is a very brief list of some people who have been attacked for their refusal to conform to the sexual agenda much of the media seems to adhere to. In this list are described some proposals which if passed could use tax payer dollars to fund public censoring software to be installed on computers available in libraries and schools. I find it incredibly galling that an arbitrary definition of "indecent" created by a group of people in some far off

Fitzgerald's Life - A Reflection in Jay Gatsby

A great deal of the adulterous and scandalous behavior described in The Great Gatsby is reflective of F. Scott Fitzgerald's personal life at the time in which he wrote the novel. The Great Gatsby, a novel written by Fitzgerald, includes many autobiographical elements of the author's life. On the surface, The Great Gatsby is a story about disillusioned love between a man and a woman. However, the novel also portrays the American Dream of the 1920's and how it begins to crumble, much like what was happening in Fitzgerald's real world. Fitzgerald explored many aspects of his own emotions and experiences through the characters he created in The Great Gatsby, specifically Jay Gatsby and his relationship with the woman he devotes his life to pursuing; Daisy Buchanan. Both Fitzgerald, the man, and Gatsby, the character, share in their ambition to achieve the American Dream through the relentless pursuit of a "perfect" woman whose unworthiness leads to the disintegration of that dre

World Religion - Hinduism

Hinduism, is defined by the dictionary as a major religious and cultural tradition of South Asia. This is the religion I found to be most interesting out of the ones we talked about in class. One of the many things that intrigued me was the polytheistic aspect of the religion. When I was in High School I studied a lot of Greek mythology and I really enjoyed it. I like the idea of people having a different God or Goddess for each kind of aspect in life. For example each religions has a god of fire. The Greeks had Hephaestus and the Hindus have Agni. I am not sure if Agni and other gods like that are mythological or if they still praise them. Those are the kind of gods that I like. Another one is Bakasura who is known as the Great Devourer. I did some research on my own because I enjoy this religion that much. I like that each god has a purpose and I like how they are dressed and what they look like. There are many more aspects of Hinduism that are enjoyable outside just the polytheisti

On the Rainy River by Tim O'Brien

"Rainy River Literary Analysis" The short story, "On the Rainy River", written by Tim O'Brien, presents behaviors where the main character acts in a fainthearted and fearful manner. Tim, the main character, is consistently blaming other individuals for his mistakes and he frequently makes irrelevant excuses in order for him to access what he desires. Being courageous is the most important trait a young person can develop and Tim does not attain that mannerism. Through several occurrences where Tim believes to be under crushing stress, he proves by the way he manipulates the situations that he can't handle being a person of courage. He labels himself a coward (O'Brien 9). On any occasion where a conflict rises, Tim continually reverses the accusation by making an excuse in an attempt to cover up his true colors of cowardice. Tim inputs, "The sight of blood makes me queasy, and I couldn't tolerate authority, and I didn't know a rifle from a slingshot" (2).

Rhetorical Analysis Essay - The Military

Going into any part of America's military is quite an experience, an experience that only those who are actually a part of the military can truly understand. These soldiers, who become veterans if they can make it past war, go through scenarios unlike anyone could ever imagine. Not even today's Hollywood movies can fully put into perspective the horror that unfolds in front of these soldiers' eyes. But, writers can use rhetorical devices in short stories and articles to help us get a glimpse of what it's really like to be in the military. Sibohan Fallon, the author of the short story, The Last Stand, uses many rhetorical devices to get a peek into what it's like for wounded veteran Kit to com back from a tour in Afghanistan. Chris Adams, author of the article "Large numbers of veterans with PTSD live near military bases," also uses these rhetorical devices to help get his point across. Fallon indirectly faces the issue of what it's like for veterans to live on a military base with PTSD

Religious Freedom in Nepal

The Italian priests first passed through Nepal on 1662A.D on their route to Tibet. The Roman Catholic Church in 1703, the Capuchin priests were asked to go back and evangelize in Tibet, India and Nepal. The Newar community, indigenous group of Kathmandu valley, was the prime target of these missionaries whose basecamp was in Patna, India. They came to work several times from 1707 to 1769. Prithvi Narayan Shah, after the unification of Nepal expelled the priest condemning them of trying to impose colonial power. From then until 1951 a policy was introduced that did not allow any foreigners and Christians in the country. The reason for this policy was to maintain independence and keep the Hindu structure of society unaffected. The nations were closed from missionaries for two hundred years following this policy. The Nepalese who lived outside of the country tried to work on missions outside the countries. People from Nepal often visited India. So most of the Nepalese were converted rig

Exploring the Depths of the Oceans

It is a bold statement that we have explored less than five percent of the Earth's oceans and seas (Earl 7). But why is that? I've always had a problem with not knowing something, whether it be an ending to a movie or just about the latest current events in the paper. When I don't know something, I become obsessed with it until I do know it. Five percent of anything is considered to be a minuscule amount even for a waiter's tip let alone the entire ocean. Water makes up over ninety percent of the Earth and the fact that we have only explored about five percent of its entirety concerns me deeply. Knowing so little about something that is as large as the ocean makes me ask the question "Why have we explored so little of Earth's total water?". So I have decided I am going to get to the bottom of this overdue question and preferably the ocean as well. When people think of the earliest time people explored the oceans, they typically think of Christopher Columbus (Rozwadowski 1).

Miscommunication in The Yellow Wallpaper

Imagine being diagnosed with a disease which forbids you from any creative activity, stops you from going out, and limits your forms of expression. That's not even the worst part! There's also no guarantee you'll get better but all you are required to do is blindly follow orders given to you by your doctor and if you decide to go about your normal daily routine, you are forced into an undesirable cure. Charlotte Perkin Gilman's famous short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper", starts out with the protagonist speaking in first person about her husband's profession as a physician. Right off the bat, we can see that she is skeptical and disagrees with his methods of treating her so called mental disorders. Gilman uses the literary device of character to convey the lack of communication between the narrator and her husband/society. Throughout the story, we are exposed to the thoughts of a woman who is diagnosed with nervous depression and hysteria. She is frantic and unorganized with

Methods for Evaluating Historical Sources

In this essay we are going to look into the problems that can occur when recording history, and some of the different methods a good historian should adopt to lessen subjectivity. The aim is to evaluate source material, in order to provide an honest representation of historical events. Almost everything that we believe about ourselves and the world in which we live, is rooted in time. This can be, on one side viewed on an individual level. We would have no idea how to function in day to day life without past learning, constantly reviewing every experience. Without doing this we would have no understanding of the world and nothing would have meaning to us. As Tosh, J (2010) states this also happens collectively, being where the importance of the historian comes in. The historian is shaping the world view in which the collective think within, at the present day. Whether people are aware or not, their day to day lives will have been affected by the way in which history has been evaluated

Sports Funding in College

Athletic departments at the high school and college level should have more funding due to the success student athletes show during and after schooling. Firstly, athletic departments should get extra funding solely from the effort and time that coaches and student athletes invest in their specific field. On average, student athletes spend "15-18 hours a week in high school, and up to 40 hours a week in college"(Robinson) training and practicing for their sport; however this does not included competitions which for some high school sports, would place these hours in the twenties. For high school student athletes, this is almost an extra half-day of schooling time dedicated to their sport. This proven dedication shows how the athletes have earned extra funding for their programs. Student athletes show their desire for success not only on the field or track, but in the classroom as well. Over the past decade, student athletes have seen a "12% increase"(Gorman) in their GPAs. Along with th

NYS Gets Rid of IEP Diplomas for Special Education

Until now, students receiving special education in New York State would be working toward an IEP (Individual Education Plan) diploma throughout their years of high school. With the final decision well on its way, the Board of Regents has proposed that the state get rid of the IEP diploma, and instead replace it with a "skills and achievement commencement credential." Sure, this certificate will allow the state to continue receiving federal funding, but how exactly will special education students benefit from the change? The Board of Regents believes that the IEP is a "misleading" safety net allowing students with special needs to not work to their full ability (Phillips). This generalization created by The Regents Board has sparked a flame of fury amongst the families of special needs children, especially since the commencement credential could potentially hinder their child's chances of employment or going to college in the future. Not only is the new skills and ac

Upheavals in the Enlightenment Period

The Enlightenment was a time of upheaval in many aspects of life, both secular and religious. Major historical characters appeared during this time thanks to the anonymity given by the "clandestine literature" that sprung up during this period, including Le Philosophe. This was one of the first works to anonymously appear in the 1700's and it was one of many that contained some of the most controversial, and progressive thinking of the time. It is during this time that we really start to see a break with religion more decisive than we had ever seen before. It is during this time that Voltaire, Locke, Diderot, Kant and Mendelssohn all made their mark on history. Each of these characters had a problem with the popular thoughts regarding religion and the state and each helped to change the definition of philosophe to mean "godless". One of the sources that caused the most controversy during this time was that of Treatise of the Three Impostors, which told the world t

Libman Company Advertisement Analysis

When flipping through the Home Goods Living magazine, one ad stuck out like a sore thumb. A woman in a karate stance wearing bright green colors, holding a mop in the center, is inviting the readers to get serious about what they use when cleaning their homes. This Libman Company ad being in the magazine, mainly focuses on female audiences, but can speak to any one of its subscribers. The purpose of the ad is to have these female consumers want to buy the mop since it will help them get their "vengeance" on dirt, while maintaining an emphasis on strong women. In addition, the woman in this ad is dressed like the Bride from the movie Kill Bill, to emphasize how effective the mop is at destroying dirt. The movie Kill Bill, features a strong female assassin, who takes vengeance against her ex-partner. This advertisement also plays on a social controversy of gender roles with the focus being on women as the ones that clean the house. The ad's argument is very effective through th

Women and Religion

The status, or "place," of women in society has been a well-debated issue that is as old as the earliest civilizations. The inequalities between men and women can be observed throughout society in varying areas such as income level, job opportunity, sexual double standards, and rights to hold offices of power, both politically and religiously. The idea of a woman's role being in the home as a housekeeper and child bearer has been violently combated by fierce feminist movements that claim there should be no divisions between the roles and abilities of males and females. The question of whether men and women were created equally or that women were created to serve men is an ideal shaped in society that can best be explained by the particular religious practices that influence them. In this paper I will be discussing two different religious practices from different parts of the world, Islam and Christianity, and how their views of women have shaped and influenced civilization.

Types and Uses of Fungi

Fungi are usually multicellular structures but can also be single cellular to, like yeasts. Fungi are also eukaryotes. Fungi are very peculiar because they can have qualities of animal cells but they also have qualities of plant cells which makes them unable to be classified as either one. They are heterotrophs like animal cells, but they have cell walls like plant cells. The cell structure of the fungus cell is very unique. Some are unicellular and others are multicellular. A example of a unicellular fungi is yeast, but a example of a multicellular fungi could be an underground fungus which can grow up to one thousand football fields! All fungi except for unicellular fungi such as yeast have cell walls. Some fungi are arranged in a structure with things called hyphae. Hyphae are thread like tubes that make up the structures of multicellular fungi. Some of the hyphae in various fungi can be long threads of cytoplasm that can contain many nuclei. The appearance of many fungi depend on

Theoretical Perspectives of Technology and the City

The first concept I believe to be of the most importance was presented in module 1 and deals with understanding the theoretical perspectives of technology and the city. There are four main perspectives discussed in the module which are technological determinism, utopianism, dystopianism, and social construction of technology view point. The reason learning about the different perspectives of a city are critical for this course are that it will help one understand how they view technology and its impact on the city. The first perspective, technological determinism deals with the relationship between telematics technologies which are the integrated use of telecommunications and technology and the community. This theory is straight forward, as the changes in the city are seen as a direct result of the changes in telematics. We can see this relationship in a city like Toronto, where changes in the physical form of the city can be determined by what kind of technologies were available at a

South Asian Culture Studies

South Asian culture is still full of distinct and undefinable aspects. In the movies and popular literature it is represented as the culture of silence, religion and spirituality. This paper is aimed to discuss the representation of South Asian culture in the movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. On the contrary to traditional representation of India as strictly traditional country, this movie performs both traditional or historical component of Indian culture and the impact of western civilization on it. The movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is rich for the representations of South Asian culture, Indian metaphysics and Indian spirituality. The key product of Indian culture is respect to traditions that is expressed via numerous forms (Hogan15). For instance, Hinduism is a religion of daily life, which means that Hindus practice daily rituals and follow the will of the parents. These rituals include the worship to gods by lustration via sacred food, sweets and flower petals. When Hindus appr

The Wrong Path to Equality

Feminism, in theory, is excellent. Social, political, and economic success should not be gender specific. The U.S has taken many steps to enforce this form of equality with the constitutional amendment that allowed women the right to vote, the Equal Pay Act which attempted to abolish wage disparity, and the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade where women were granted the option of first term abortions. As we progress through the twenty- first century, American women have virtually the same liberties as men. However, feminists of both genders have taken an aggressive and sometimes counter-productive approach to eradicate the few outliers that remain. Some elements of the movement extend past logical boundaries and constrict the rights of men. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and the link that is holding back gender equality is feminism. The people of the United States should abandon feminism to benefit future generations. The international definition of feminism is &qu

The Impact of Immigration on America

Introduction What do birds do when the weather begins to turn cold? They fly to another country where the weather is warmer. This move from one place to another is called migration. The birds migrate to a better climate. The same thing happens with immigrants. They move from one place to another for a safer, more reliable environment. But the US today is arguing whether immigration would be good for us or not. Some think that immigration will make us more money, whole others think that immigrants will take our money rather than make it for us and give us a bad name. Well, Immigration is good for the U.S because it supports our natural rights, it gives us a boost in the economy, and it even allows us to be a more diverse country. It is important to think about how immigration can positively affect our growing nation as we begin to stand out from other nations as well. Thesis To begin with, immigration promotes our natural rights because it enables "pursuit of happiness", as

Research Paper - The Things They Carried

Often times in literature, an author will focus on a seemingly insignificant aspect of a character and their journey rather than the prime aspect which weighs heavier throughout the text. They're are many difficulties that men in the Vietnam War face, but not only does it exhaust ones physical state, but also it mentally affects these men. In Tim O'Brien's short story entitled "The Things They Carried", the setting and characters are used to acknowledge the theme that the Vietnam War takes a toll on ones physical and emotional state. In the story, each man has a different object that they carry that affects their intellectual view on the war. Throughout the story, the author gives us examples of what the land was like, the actual things they carried, and the things each one needed to keep them sane. In the end, we see that each of these items has a different meaning to each soldier that goes along with their mental state. "The soldiers also carry stories: stories that c

Dysfunctional Communications

What comes up to your mind when you hear the word Love? Well you must think about happiness, about those butterflies in the stomach when you see the person you like. But when you hear Love, do you ever think about when problems start to occur? As most of us know Love is not all happiness and butterflies, kisses and a happily ever after; it's much ore that that. And what better example than the book with the title What We Talk About When We Talk About Love by Raymond Carver that introduces in his stories Love in many different ways and forms. Carver includes the impermanence of love and the inadequacy of verbal communication between couples. He remarks in his stories how love can be demonstrated which is reflected in his characters that share through out the stories. He highlights something in common in each of these stories, that is the inconstancy of love. He also focuses on the lack of communication that as a consequence starts to bring problems. Although Carver has a unique way to d

Sexually Transmitted Infections - Multiple Source Essay

Sexually transmitted infections are not new issues within the human population. In 2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that 19 million new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occur each year (Wasik). Although, people have advanced in educating others about the risks, prevention methods and treatments, the occurrence of STIs continue to increase. There are many ways to prevent STIs and risk factors that one should understand before becoming sexually active. It's vital for a person to understand the information in their education of sex, lack of understanding can result in a person coming in contact with an STI and potentially being diagnosed with something more serious, like cancer. Researchers have been looking for ways to diminish STIs altogether and continue to do so every day. Teaching the risk factors of contracting an STI is a very important way to prevent them from spreading, and indirectly preventing more causes and cases of cancer around the
