All God's Children by Fox Butterfield

In the book "All God's Children" author Fox Butterfield delivered his point of view and his theory on the Bosket family and the American tradition of violence. Fox Butterfield was born in 1939 in Lancaster PA, graduating from Harvard University, Fox Butterfield became a famous journalist and author working with Times bureau chief in Saigon, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Boston and as a correspondent in Washington and New York. Around that time Butterfield was honored with the Pulitzer Prize as a member of The New York Times team that published the Pentagon Papers, the Pentagon's secret history of the Vietnam War, in 1971. He also wrote All God's Children: The Bosket Family and the American Tradition of Violence about the child criminal Willie Bosket. A few days later Willie would go on to take another man's life on another subway as well as attempting to rob two othe

The Power of Feeling Worthless

Imagine one feels as if they have lost all the sensation in the areas of their hand that would be covered by a glove. The doctors will tell the patient that this is not physically possible. However, many people have had this happen to them before; this is called Glove Anesthesia which is a form of a conversion disorder. This somatoform (body) disorder does not happen all at once, though; it requires different psychological processes in order to take place. In The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor Samsa goes through a series of psychological disturbances which leads him to his literal transformation into a human-sized vermin. In this novel, Gregor, because of his psychological disturbances, experiences conversion disorder. The word 'vermin' in and of itself has a negative meaning; these creatures are viewed as diseased pests. For a human being to alter into this monstrous creature is saying a lot about Gregor's psyche, how he was treated by others, and the relationships he ha

Criminal Justice in Germany

Diverse systems of politics, and forms of criminal justice can be found spread throughout the entire world. Moreover what becomes even more significant is the ideals that each of these systems provides to the world community. With different developments of law enforcement related to each individual country's individual development throughout history, new innovative strategies in regards to law enforcement constantly arise. In particular, I will be focusing on the country of Germany in this paper. As such, I will be providing a brief historical background of the nation, as well as its government, criminal justice system, and its current role in the world today. Germany is located bordering the North Sea as well as the Baltic Sea with Denmark situated at its most northern border. To its west it finds its border with France and to the East its border with Poland. Moreover Germany can trace its origins very far back into ancient times during the decline of the Roman Empire. The first doc

Buddhism and the Concept of Ataman

At their core, the world religions that originated in South Asia known as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism share a common idea about the fundamental problems of humanity and the transformation necessary to end these problems. The ultimate goal of each of these religions is to be liberated from the cycle of rebirth, which is caused by the attachment to the karmic self, ruled by desire and spiritual ignorance. However, the key to understanding the religions shaped from this perspective lies in learning the significant ideas that distinguish them from one another. Buddhism, for example, suggests that there is no permanence, even in the cycle of rebirth, which is the opposite of other South Asian religions that claim the existence of an eternal self and reincarnation. Buddhism emerged in India in the sixth century BCE when a privileged man named Siddartha Gautama sought out to discover an escape from suffering and the path to spiritual enlightenment. Initially Siddartha studied t

The Cold War Containment

By the mid 1940's, the United States and Soviet Union were in a feud. This feud led to the Cold War which didn't really consist of official battles, but more of disagreements and uncompromisable disputes. The largest dispute was about communism and capitalism. At this point, the Soviet Union, eastern Europe, some countries in Asia, and Cuba were all Communist countries and each of them believe strongly that communism was better than capitalism. However, countries like the US, Canada, Southern Asia, and Eastern Europe believed strongly in capitalism. "The Sources of Soviet Conduct by X states "In these circumstances it is clear that the main element of any US policy toward the Soviet Union must be that of a long term, patient but vigilant containment of Russian expansive tendencies". X turned out to be George Kennan, an American Foreign Service officer stationed in Moscow. These beliefs led to no compromise,

History and Uses of Botox

We live in a culture that is obsessed with looking young and beautiful. As women and celebrities age they feel the need to maintain their youthful appearance to live up to the standards of our society. In our youth crazed society, millions of people try to get rid of their wrinkles through the use of Botox cosmetics every year. Since Botox as been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, its use as a wrinkle reducer had grown exponentially. The age of women seeking Botox injections is decreasing and tabloid headlines often read something along the lines of " Ashlee Simpson is getting Botox at 23!" In 2003, doctors administered nearly 3 million Botox injections, making it the most frequently used cosmetic procedure. Despite the fact that the use of Botox is increasing every year, most people are not aware of how it affects the body and what side effects is may have. Botox was first discovered by Dr. Justinus Kerner in the 1820's. Dr. Kerner studied a batch of spoiled b

The American Dream in Of Mice and Men

In the novel "Of Mice and Men," by John Steinbeck, one can see that being pulled in separate directions for ones desires can make that choice mare difficult. Desires and dreams are the main distractions for most of the characters, and you can see that through their actions. As you read, it is clear that no-one's desires or dreams made it through, they all ended in disaster and destruction. This book shows this through Candy and his dog, Curley's Wife, and George and Lennie.  Candy had a dog and the desire to keep him and everyone else's desire to put him down was too much to bare. "'Well-hell! I had him so long. Had him since he was a pup Carlson said 'The way I'd shoot him, he wouldn't feel nothing' At last Candy said softly and hopelessly, 'Awright-take 'im.'" (Steinbeck, 44, 45, 47). Candy had no intention of letting them kill his dog. But, it is important to realize that everyone in the house was telling him that he needed to put him down due to the sme

Idealist and Positivist Views of History

The idealist view of history is that all history is the history of human thoughts. Historians learn about human thought intuitively and immediately. Historians can put themselves in the place of who they are researching or studying while scientists cannot do the same. Meanwhile historians can re-enact the past in a very different way than scientist. A study of history is a study of unique events that happened. The historians immediately hold on to what happened without applying any general's laws. All history is the history of human thoughts. An idealist say that what a person thinks about they put in action. They also say that a person's mind is like the controller of what the person ends up doing. They say a person's history is the way the person thinks of it to be. That a person history comes out exactly the way they have thought of it to be and even if the person doesn't know they start to act on their thoughts. The best objection to idealist view is that one will never truly unde

Andy Warhol and Humanistic Theories

Introduction Theoretical Background Humanistic psychology focuses on the individuals meaning of life. The humanistic approach focuses on phenomenology, which comprises everything a person hears, feels and thinks, and which is at the center of her humanity and may even be basis of free will (Funder, 436, 2013). This type of psychology is all about how your behavior is linked to inner feelings and self concept. One important thing to understand is that man is in contact not only with things but with his fellowmen and with himself as well (Van Kaam, 1961). You are constantly around people and things that influence your construal and help shape your experiences. George Kelly's studies on constructs enforce that you actually choose the constructs you use because your personal reality constructs your mind (Funder, 457, 2013). You create your own reality which is unique to yourself and your experiences. There are three parts of experience; biological, social and inner psychological. The biolo

A Feminist Approach to Much Ado About Nothing

Beatrice in "Much Ado About Nothing," by William Shakespeare, is unlike any other women in the play, especially Hero. Unlike Hero, who obeys the sexist laws of society, Beatrice is witty, outspoken, and sarcastic. Despite living in a time period ruled by men, she refuses to fall into the norm of society. Marriage defined social class for women during this time, so it was important for girls to get married so they could have an acceptable life. Beatrice hated that marriage defined a woman, which made her stand out among the other women in the play. Beatrice's character symbolizes independence and courage that women of this time lacked. Although Beatrice's boldness is what makes her stand out the most, some people may portray her as a bitch. She can be stereotyped this because she is a women that is very dramatic and is not afraid to speak her mind. Beatrice uses her sarcastic and dramatic behavior to define herself in society but is also perceived negatively by many for this reason be

Africa and the Case for Foreign Aid

Why is Africa so poor? This is not an uncommon question because it seems as though Africa has not developed very much at all and continues to be impoverished. Poverty reduction and ultimately eradication is a central concern for developing countries and developed counties alike. Economists, specifically those that focus on development have been asking how to alleviate poverty for a great deal of time. The solution up until now has been foreign aid. However, considering the trillions in foreign aid that have been poured into developing countries the results have been disappointing. Especially in Africa, as of 2012 the population of Sub-Saharan Africa was 910.4 million, but 48.5% of the population was living off of $1.25 a day as of 2010 (World Bank). This is disillusioning because the majority of African nations are aid dependent and yet the average African citizen has such a low standard of living. Although, progress has been made and some African countries such as South Africa, Botsw

Character Development in Hamlet

In William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, the protagonist undergoes many different character traits that develop throughout the play. Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, is the son of King Hamlet who is murdered before the play begins. Prince Hamlet's mother Gertrude, the Queen of Denmark, moves on with her life very quickly after her husband is killed. She gets remarried to no other than her brother-in-law, Claudius the very next day. In the beginning of the play, Hamlet receives a visit from a ghost that is perceived to be Hamlet's dead father. This ghost then tells Hamlet that his new stepfather, Claudius killed King Hamlet. The rest of the play is Prince Hamlet seeking revenge upon King Claudius for killing his father. In the beginning of the play, Hamlet is very emotional at the fact that his father was just killed. In this matter, when he was visited by the ghost that claimed he was

US Government and Special Interest Groups

During the 1930's, the New Deal was established to supplement democracy and to promote the formation of interest groups. Policies were made by the government in order to minimize economic disparity in the United States after the Great Depression. Over the course of eighty years this resulted in a dramatic increase in both the number of interest groups wanting to play a role in the American political process and in their ability to influence government decisions. When introduced, interest groups were intended to provide equal opportunity for all groups and gave poor people a chance to be politically active. However, interest groups today do not properly represent average American's as intended, and oppositely, pose a threat to American Democracy. This can been seen in interest groups ability to influence public officials who hold power to fulfill their wants rather than what the party as a whole wants or what the people want, the majority of interest group members being people with high

The 1960s Counterculture

The United States in the 1960s was a time of cultural change and social movements throughout the country. The youth movement was characterized by young college students that had become political activists and were against political suppression by the government. They were also were majorly involved in the civil rights and antiwar movements. Others that were apart of the youth movement simply separated themselves from the mainstream ideals of the society. The social, cultural, and political impacts of the counterculture that took place in the 60s had a very large impact on United States history and today. The people of the counterculture were young college age men and women. Majority of these students were middle-class and attended nice universities across the country. With the growth of the counterculture these students dropped out of school and out of the mainstream United States society to join this alternative style of living. The people of the counterculture were more commonly cal

The Influence of Pop Art

For Integrative Studio and Seminar: Avatar, we were paired with fellow classmates and tasked with selecting an art movement to summarize and reimagine as a 3D art piece. I was partnered by Melissa _________ and we both were inspired by the Pop Art movement of the late 1950's to the early 1970's. Before I left home to attend Parsons, I experienced a show of the work of later Pop Artist Tom Wesselmann at the VMFA (Virginia Museum of Fine Art). I was instantly inspired and amazed. The challenging idea behind the Pop Art movement was so incredibly intriguing to me: It was a brash, young, fun, artistic sensibility and I instantly identified with it. Luckily, Melissa had a similar experience, attending her own Andy Warhol exhibition, and we agreed that the Pop Art movement was what we wanted and needed to explore. Via research, we learned the many nuances of the movement; its influences, inspirations, effect on society, and how no single Pop Artist was the same in technique, execution or c

Alexander Pushkin and Russian Literature

How would it feel to be the most beloved writer of all time in a country known for their literary talents? Even today, Alexander Pushkin remains Russia's most beloved writer. His works have left a lasting impact on Russian culture and literature. No other writer throughout their history made such an impression on the way Russians live their lives. He set the bar to a new level that has yet to be matched even to this day. Alexander began to make a name for himself at a very early age in his life. While Alexander was growing up he was given the best education you could have received during the time period. As he went through his schooling something was definitely unique about this young man. On one occasion Tsar Alexander made a visit to his school, and while a majority of the students applauded in bewilderment, Pushkin had other thoughts running through his head (Massie 203). He immediately drew up a picture that portrayed the Tsar mockingly. His classmates got a great kick out of thi

Short Story - Coming of Age

I woke up to the buzzing of my alarm while it was still dark. Any other day I would condemn that atrocious ringing, cursing everything in the world that has led me to get out bed at 3:30 in the morning. Today though, is different. Today I woke more alarmed than my clock, eager to shut the singing buzz off and start my day. My wife groaned as she heard my bustle out of the bed, and around our room. I slowly walked to Sam's room down the hall to act as her own personal alarm clock, hoping I would be met with a good mood-Sam had never been keen on mornings, but I hoped this was a special occasion, as it was for myself. "Sam, baby, it's time to-"I couldn't even get the words out of my mouth before she quite literally jumped out of bed and went straight to the bathroom where I had laid out her clothes for our excursion. As she turned on the shower I couldn't help but to feel a wave of optimism inside myself. She's actually excited for this. "Don't forget to use the scent

Dance Critique - Kaleidoscope

Thursday April 2, I attended an event that in all honesty was not too thrilled. I am writing this critique to admit that I was wrong. Held at the RCC Auditorium at Bridgewater State University I attended the Dance Kaleidoscope 2015 was genuinely an artistic and creative experience to be a part of. It was full of life, incredible movement, and distinct colors and music portraying the very emotions being spilled out by performers. Although I was only able to stay for Act 1, I'd to recall two pieces which I thought was the most unique and relative to me. Let's start with "Touchdown". Stepping aside from my love for the game of football and all sports alike for that matter, "Touchdown" to me was a very unique piece. What it focused on primarily was the great American tradition of a celebration dance in the end zone after a touchdown. It definitely sparked a light and influential mood. Very victorious and almost patriotic even. There was no distinct story as it illustrated the common tradition as a generality. The choreographer, Larry Souz

The Whale Watching Trip

Everyone has a day that they wish they could have back. I have had days that would shock some, and inspire others, especially in the Marine Corps. July 4th, 2008, is a prime example of how chaotic a day with me can be. What started off as a planned trip to Huntington Beach for whale watching; and ended with a shocking memory. That was a nice way to celebrate my Fourth of July. I was asked to go whale watching with some Marines in my squadron. We were based in sunny southern California, on Marine Corps Station Camp Pendleton. The group that we had going with us was small party of five. Bethany, Eric, John, Chris, and I were going to heading to Huntington Beach to meet our tour boat, The Calm Dew; but nothing about this trip was calm. The car ride there was full of life and joy. We sped up the I-5, music was being blasted, heads were nodding, and we were having fun and acting up like young adults. It didn't take long to reach our destination, which left us with some sometime to kill

Fundamentals of Macroeconomics

The study of macroeconomics examines interactions of individuals on a very large scale. Our society is based on trends in spending and our behaviors are analyzed and put in to numbers. This paper discusses a few scenarios that we see every day including purchasing groceries, massive layoffs, and decreasing taxes that show the importance of macroeconomics. Purchasing groceries Most of the goods we see at our grocery stores are grown, produced, and shipped from foreign countries, and is influenced by the global economic system. When we shop for groceries, we see foods from Mexico, Brazil, Chile, China, France, and as well as many other countries. All of these countries have some type of advantage in the international trade market and makes it more efficient to source grocery product from all over the world. It would be far less efficient for us to attempt to produce these goods ourselves and would adversely affect supplies and prices. As consumers, we create a demand for these products and those countries with the advantage are the countries that are able to succeed in this free ma

Literature Review - Anthem by Ayn Rand

In the science fiction novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, who had been raised in the Soviet Union, a time that the populace was under a system of coerced 'Equality'. She promotes her ideals of human nature by engendering a dystopian society in which individualism is maleficent. The protagonist of the novel Equality 7-2521 is born into a nation that abolishes the word 'I'. Rand's philosophy of human nature is prodigiously precise in the sense that a higher power taking away society's rights to think for oneself would not only lead to a dystopian world but there would always be someone rebelling. The Soviet Union is only one example of the horrific incidents that have taken place due to collectivism and a totalitarian regime. Rwandan Genocide, the Westboro Baptist Church, and Nazi Germany are other examples from sundry timelines that demonstrate the hazards of individual conceptions being abolished from a population. The first example of a group such as this is a recent event that

Instructional Television: Status and Directions

"Instructional Television: Status and Directions" was written by Vladimir K. Zworykin, and edited by Jerrold Ackerman, and Lawrence Lipsitz. Vladimir states, "TV has shown us many things, on, and off of earth. Into our homes, and our schools, it has shown the best and worst of us. It has bored, distracted, and even insulted us. Yet it still has yet to be properly implemented into our lives for our educational and instructional purposes. (Page 3, Instructional Television: Status and Directions)." Vladimir understands how important television can be, and also how destructive it can be at the same time. Like he mentions, television can show us milestones in technology, and gives us news from around the world, but it also hasn't failed to display our shortcomings as a society, and as a country. Riots, failures in our government,

Personality Traits and Leadership Styles

This synthesis paper will discuss three different articles that had a common theme of how personality traits and different types of leadership values that will help a person to be successful in the career path, no matter what that path may be, whether a president of the country, president of a company or an employee of either of these two, you can be a successful team player. In the three articles that were reviewed for this study, we were able to see that there are psychopathic traits that help lead to successful leadership position whether in politics or in the world of business. In the article written by, Lilienfeld, S. O., Waldman, I. D., Landfield, K., Watts, A. L., Rubenzer, S., & Faschingbauer, T. R. (2012), entitled "Fearless dominance and the U.S. presidency: Implications of psychopathic personality traits for successful and unsuccessful political leadership," we are able to look into the lives of the US Presidents to see how their levels of psychopathy helped them t

Sea Levels and Global Warming

There are several aspects about the effects of global warming on the environment. What is global warming? Global warming is the process of gradual growth of average annual temperature of the atmosphere of the Earth and World Ocean. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "Earth's average temperature has risen by 1.4 Fahrenheit over the past century, and is projected to rise another 2 to 11.5 Fahrenheit over the next hundred years." As a result of global warming, the expansion of ocean water is increasing, argues James Hansen, a physicist, an astronomer, and the head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, in his article Global Warming Threatens Massive Sea Level Rise. He states where the sea leve
