The No Campaign and the Scottish Independence ReferendumNotably, the Scottish Independence Referendum was an illustrious political landmark, marking history with its turnout of 84.6%, the highest after universal suffrage since the 1950 general election. One could argue that the Yes campaign, led by first minister Alex Salmond, had potential to succeed given the domination of the SNP in the Highlands, in the Scottish Parliament elections of 2011. However, the proposal to grant Scotland complete powers over the legislature, and executive, as well as spending and taxation, miscarried; this was because the arguments of the No campaign highlighted the plethora of financial uncertainties and risks which would implicate for the nation deleteriously, given the independence of Scotland. These uncertainties included most importantly the future currency of an independent Scotland, and the true size of North Sea oil reserves. Furthermore, the risks of independence were the increase of retail prices, and the possibility of the deterioration of the ec |

Pulp Fiction and The Kite Runner"The past is prophetic in that it asserts loudly that wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrow" (Schladweiler). Although it refers to the Vietnam War, Martin Luther King Jr.'s quote accurately communicates that a stormy, war-torn past will scarcely presage a favorable future. Challenges and hardships may obstruct the efforts of even the most robust protagonist on his journey through life, and even when overcome, they leave a permanent mark on the resultant quality of life. This theme, the "tragic past," presents itself in both The Kite Runner and Pulp Fiction, two noteworthy pieces, albeit in separate media. In the former, Amir, as a young boy, witnesses the horrific rape of his most cherished childhood friend, but he fails to profess his guilt until this friend passes away. To amend, Amir contends with his childhood enemy, the rapist himself, to gain custody of his deceased acquaintance's son. Pulp Fiction, on the other hand, depicts a gang member, |

Founder of Wendy's, David ThomasRarely in modern society can one find an example of a truly honest yet successful individual. The founder of Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers, David Thomas, fits such criteria. Thomas was born in on July 2, 1932 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, but he was adopted soon afterward by Rex and Auleva Thomas. Much of David's early life was spent moving around the country while his father searched for employment; his mother died when he was only five years old. A highlight of his childhood involved visits to his grandmother in Michigan, who taught him the value of hard work and treating people right, Thomas's first job was at a restaurant in Knoxville when he was 12. This job made an obvious impression on him, as he was quickly convinced that the restaurant business was meant for him. He dropped out of high school to work full-time at a restaurant in Ft. Wayne. Relocating the Utah State PrisonThe Utah State Prison will soon be overrun by prisoners. Although we are below the nation's average in criminal activity, our crime rate is increasing at an alarming rate. If we do not act now by building a new and better prison, our current facilities might just prove how inadequate they really are. Also, by building a new prison we will be improving two very important things - the welfare of the prisoners and the growing population of the Wasatch Front. We need to move the prison. Utah's prison is terrible. First of all, Utah's current prison facilities are not functional for our growing criminal population. If Utah continues at its rate of criminal growth, the number of inmates is estimated to grow 37% in the next twenty years. The current Gunnison, Draper, and 22 County facilities do not have the space to hold more than 7,000 people, but at this rate we will have over 10,000 prisoners by 2033. If we were to just expand our current buildings it would cost more than $700,000,000, |

The Art and Times of Edgar DegasEvery impressionist painter had their own contribution to the style of art known as Impressionism; Monet had his water lilies, Pissaro his romanticized rural workers, and Degas had his dancers. Though each painter may be known for a certain subject field and style, most explored and had interests in other elements of life. Degas for example, before his work with dancers, had a fascination with the newly imported sport of Horse Racing. In the included painting by Degas, "Le Champ de courses, jockeys amateurs près d'une voiture", he depicts the exciting moments right before the beginning of a race. This is undoubtedly a great example of impressionist artwork, whether it be the nouvaux subject matter or the colors and styles of brushstroke used, the elements are all in place to create an impressionistic masterpiece. Before Degas began his seeming obsession with dancers, he worked in the newly popularized and uncharted world of horse racing. With the new Longchamp racetra |

Voiceover Internet ProtocolOver the past few years, data networks have been growing at a much faster pace than that of voice networks. This continuing trend is most commonly attributed to the rapid growth of Internet networking services. Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP is a technology in many modern technology systems that enable users to use data to carry voice traffic. The term IP as we know stands for Internet Protocol, which is a language that computers use to communicate with the internet. VoIP is basically a comparatively innovative modern way of digital voice communication that relies on many communication protocols, technologies, and transmission techniques for delivery over a data network. The distinctive feature of VoIP is that communication happens over the Internet. The most common network of VoIP is the Internet but also, it uses networks such as a business's private data network. VoIP is increasingly prevailing over traditional analogue telephone. The attractive rates in VoIP telephony have lo |

The Evolution of Horror MoviesI. Introduction The horror movie has been a curiously gratifying medium for over one hundred years due to its almost paradoxical effects on the human mind. Since the first horror movie in 1896, people of all ages have spent precious hours of their weekends making their way to the local cinema, spending their hard-earned money on movie tickets, finding a seat in one of many crowded rooms, and sitting down in darkness for hours, all in the hope that this newest horror release will genuinely disturb them. Perhaps some in the theater just want to experience the thrill associated with death and despair. Humans are attracted to these bizarre images, so horror movies have been known to push the limit of socially acceptable entertainment. As horror veteran Stephen King puts it, the horror film "has become the modern version of the public lynching . . . It deliberately appeals to all that is worst in us" (King 498). In any case, horror movies have seen immense success around the |

Education and Socio-Economic ClassesI've always wondered why social class isn't a topic that is much discussed but we all think about often. Who hasn't ever wondered what it's like to hit the lottery and live lavish? The categorization of social classes and the division between them has always had an eminent impact on America. This categorization of class has not allowed for the equal opportunity for all Americans. In Gregory Mantsios article, "Class in America – 2009," he uses statistical evidence, data and many examples to dismember four common myths Americans still believe about social class. It could not be any clearer, that citizens from different social backgrounds live a different lifestyle in comparison to other classes, and each class provides different opportunities to its affiliates. The higher within the pyramid of class a person is ranked, the more advantage an individual has in comparison to a lower class individual. The responsibility is on everyone to eliminate this division and restructu |

The Influence of Economic Thought on NAFTAHas economic thought influenced international policy initiatives? The topic of trade and especially free trade is a well-established in economics through classical economists Adam Smith and David Ricardo. International free trade agreements are comprised of regional trade agreements (RTAs) and preferential trade agreements. According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), a regional trade agreement is "a reciprocal trade agreement between two or more partners and they include free trade agreements and customs unions (WTO). There are also preferential trade agreements which are defined as "unilateral trade preferences" (WTO). The North American Free Trade Agreement is a regional trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada. Nearly twenty years after it was signed NAFTA remains a divisive topic. I will be exploring the influence of economic thought on NAFTA and my primary focus is whether or not it has been successful in its goals specifically in regard to |

Narrative Essay - My College ExperienceOn my list of colleges that I wanted to attend while I was still in high school, UMKC was not first or even second. I wanted to attend a college that was not so close to home because I wanted to experience college the right way. Another reason that I did not want to attend UMKC was because pretty much anyone who had went to college from my dad's side of the family went to UMKC at some point. I had an uncle who attend UMKC back in the 90s and five cousins other cousins who attended UMKC in the recent years before I did. I wanted to start my own tradition in a way, however it never ended up happening. If I look back to when I was a freshman, all I can recall is going to classes and returning home everyday. It felt a lot like high school because I was not involved in any other club, activity, or extracurricular activates, so I did |

An Overview of CyberbullyingWhat is cyberbullying? Cyber bullying occurs when one employee uses email, blogs, text messaging, instant messaging, or social media to harass another employee. Cyber bullying is becoming an expanding crisis in the workplace because people are becoming increasingly dependent on 'social' technology. The underlying issue is that employees misuse company technology for personal satisfaction/gain. According to the American Management Association, 'nonproductive or potentially dangerous' messages account for nearly 35% of all company email. Not only is it personally detrimental to the victim, but the company suffers from every instance of cyber bullying as well. Why do employees engage in cyber bullying? Employees engage in cyber bullying to intentionally harass, humiliate, intimidate, or sabotage a fellow employee. Pornography and CensorshipWhat is pornography? According to Merriam Webster, dictionary online pornography is defined as "the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement". Yet, many people have different definition of what they consider pornography and what is not. Susan Brownmiller is a feminist activist who wrote an essay "Lets Put Pornography Back in the Closet" argues that pornography should not be protected under the First Amendment. Jacoby on the other hand, disagrees with Brownmiller and says that any form of censorship of pornography is not right. So, should society, let government censor pornography just because they do not have an exact definition of what is considered pornographic? Pornography has no place in society as a whole and therefore should not be censored by our government. Society has a different opinion about pornography and some say that it is unhealthy or bad. According to Wicclair states that "different people h |

TV Show - How I Met Your Mother"How I Met Your Mother" (HIMYM) is a television series following a man, Ted Mosby, and his friends through their late 20s in New York City. The show is narrated by Ted who has sat his children down to tell them the story of how he met their mother. As Harold Mendelsohn stated in his mass entertainment theory, "TV provides an inexpensive, convenient way for people to satisfy various psychological needs"(Baran & Davis, 2015, p.120). HIMYM is a very popular show because it satisfies viewers' various psychological needs by allowing them to experience life and love in NYC and feel a sense of belonging with the group. For nine seasons HIMYM took its fans on a roller coaster of Ted's happy relationships and heartbreaks all leading to him meeting the mother of his children. According to the uses and gratification theory, consumers use media for five reasons: to gain knowledge, to identify with characters, for simple entertainment, to enhance social interaction and to escape from the stresses of daily life ("Uses and gratification," 2015). Viewers watched this show to learn about relationships, friendships, and love, as well as to experience life with a g |

The Concept of Computer ConsciousnessIt is widely accepted that a rock is not conscious. The same can be said for a tree, single cell amoebae, or a cell phone. Many people believe these claims, but there is really no way to prove any of them. The question of whether or not something can be considered conscious has been present throughout the history of Epistemology and Philosophy. As technology has advanced through the years, the issue of consciousness has started to be applied to computers. If a computer was developed that showed signs of intelligent life, what is to say that such a computer is not conscious? And if this computer is not conscious, is it possible that a computer could be developed that would be considered conscious? The reason for the persistent appearance of the question of consciousness is because there is no way to prove that something is conscious. This is what is known as the problem with other minds. In regards to the consciousness of other objects, or people, any statement you make is little mo |

Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-TimeMark Haddon's novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, is a bildungsroman about a 15-year-old boy with Asperger's who prefers dogs to humans because "dogs are faithful and they do not tell lies". Animals are a motif that represents his fear and lack of connection to people. For Christopher, the truth is paramount in helping him understand the world and people around him. Through the author's portrayal of not only Christopher but also the characters, honesty is presented as vital in building trust in relationships and in understanding people's individuality. Nonetheless, the novel also delves into the complexity of telling the truth-sometimes, honesty is difficult to achieve and may even be necessary to help people cope with difficult issues. As the protagonist Christopher Boone demonstrates, honesty develops trust, which is fundamental for healthy relationships. Lies hurt relationships; this is most evident in Christopher and his father's relationship. Chri |

Dropping the Atomic Bomb on JapanIn the aftermath of World War II, there were few people who questioned President Truman's decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After all, the Japanese had provoked the United States by bombing Pearl Harbor, not the other way around. However, in later years, people began to question the obvious reason that "Truman was saving lives," by putting forth revisionist theories of their own. When examining Truman's decision to bomb Japan through the perspective of 60+ years of history and the results of the atomic bombings versus the potential results of the alternatives available to Truman at the time, it becomes abundantly clear that he made a correct and justifiable decision and ended the war. Truman resolutely defended the atomic bombings. On August 9, after Nagasaki was bombed, Truman made a public statement on why the atomic bombs were used: Having found the bomb we have used it. We have used it against those who attacked us without warning at Pearl Har |

SABC External Environments1. INTRODUCTION. The main aim of this discussion is to describe and analyse the external environment in which the SABC operates, in order to determine which type of market structure can be found in the market. The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is South Africa's national public broadcaster with a strategic purpose of broadcasting for the total empowerment of its citizens. As such it is obliged to offer the public a comprehensive range of distinctive programs and services. The Amazon and Congo RainforestsWhen people think of tropical rainforests; wet, lush, green, exotic and preserved lands come to mind. Unfortunately, the rainforests throughout the world aren't as preserved as we wish they were, once before. We often associate an environmental issue with one particular subject. For tropical rainforests, there's a series of different environmental issues going on, all at once, every day. Climate change (global warming, fossil fuels, greenhouse gas), conservation (ecosystems – biodiversity, habitat destruction, illegal dumping; fishing; forests – clear-cutting, deforestation, illegal logging; natural resources – exploitation of natural resources; species – endangered species, poaching, species extinction, wildlife trade), ozone depletion (CFC), and pollution are some tropical rainforest environmental issues, to name a few. While we boast about what we have done to help the global environment, it's a mere fraction versus the actual damage that we've done and what we continue doing. Rainforests are identified by their climate, controlling factors, geographic distribution, distinguishing characteristics and related features. Tropical rainforests coole |

The Lost Honor of Katharina BlumThe use of language in the novel encourages the reader to respond adversely and form an attack on the horrendous journalistic practises of "the News". There are numerous instances of modality (indirect author opinion) which have the verbal function of telling the reader what the speaker's attitude is about the News whilst supposedly maintaining a "scrupulously fair" (p. 106) "testimony" in his "report" (p. 8). Boll directs the reader's response by introducing sarcastic and scathing words, such as "bias" (p. 8), when referring to the paper and suggesting "The News [which is] all lies" (p. 139) is a "rag" (p. 40), an insulting term for a newspaper, and is both full of "lying and fraudulent statements" (p.61) and composed by "murderers and character-assassins" (p. 108). The News is personified as wild, out of control, animalistic, monstrous, beastly and therefore, as the reader is positioned to see, |
