Louis XVI and the Downfall of the Absolute Monarchy

Louis XVI was partially to blame for the downfall of the monarchy and was used as a scapegoat for the political, economic and social problems that was already existing in France, however Louis XVI exacerbated these problems. The most fundamental reason for the downfall of the monarchy was due to the financial situation of France in 1789 although this was not solely his responsibility as he inherited this debt when he came to power. However there were many other interconnecting factors that also contributed to the downfall of Louis XVI. The most fundamental reason for the fall of the monarchy was due to the financial situation of France in 1789. Although the debt of France cannot solely be pinned of Louis XVI as he inherited the debts of the war of the Spanish, Polish, Austrian, and the Seven Year War; which put a huge financial strain on the country. However he handled the situation terribly leading to even more severe debt therefore angering the third estate due to the burden of taxe

Facing the Fire

Little flickers of flame dance through the dense smoke over a firefighter's head, visibility is nearly zero, and the temperature is rising to 1100 degrees Fahrenheit; suddenly a shout comes through the smoke "Open 'em up!" The two doors fly open in the rear of the container and in just seconds you and everyone you're with is completely surrounded by flames. This natural phenomenon is known as a flashover, which if unrecognized can lead to firefighters burning alive in building fires. The scientific definition of flashover states it is caused by the radiation of heat. Heat from the growing fire is absorbed into the upper walls and contents of the room, heating up the combustible gases and furnishings to their ignition temperatures. This buildup of heat in the room triggers a flashover when everything rapidly and uniformly ignites causing a near explosion. I attended the College of the Siskiyou's Fire Academy in the fall of 2012, and a flashover was one of my very few fe

The Influence of Islam on Europe

If Islam's "Golden Age" had never existed, then Europe would have been a continent in chaos. In today's world, it is often forgotten how much Islam has fundamentally impacted and changed our lives. In fact, Islam has given Europe architecture, medicine, math, astronomy, music, art and literature. These disciplines encompass all the important aspects of our society and everyday lives. When studying the details of the Islamic contribution to European society over the last millennium, it is easy to understand its vast influence and will leave no one unmoved. It is clear that without Islam's extraordinary methods and translations Europe would have. As Islam grew many educated people decided to translate the work from Greek genuses. One very noticeable translator was Hunayn Ibn Ishaq. He lived in the 9th C.E and many of his translations can be found in almost every public library around the world. He translated the writings of Galen, Dioscorides and Aristotle. One of his most impressive translations were the De Materia de Medica. The book was originally written by a Greek named Dioscorides, who is the founder of herbal med

How to Avoid Plagiarism

Although plagiarism has been a problem throughout history, it is especially important now for students to give it their prompt attention. Students often times plagiarize and they do that by unintentionally plagiarizing which simply means they were copying and did not document correctly or they did not have enough knowledge on exactly what it is that they were writing. (Hult, Huckin) (Page 238). Unintentionally or intentionally both of them have a consequence. According to The New Century Handbook, "plagiarism is defined as the unauthorized or misleading use of the language and text of another author." "Whenever you use the work of others, paraphrase or summarize another author's work you must acknowledge them and give credit where it's due." (Hult, Huckin) (Page 238). "When you acknowledge the work of others it's called documenting the sour

Charlie Chaplain - A King in New York

Introduction Charlie Chaplin, the English comic actor, filmmaker and composer was one of the biggest stars of the silent film era. Appearing in short films just as the Great War was getting started, he would be one of the world's biggest stars by the time it ended. In the ensuing decades he starred in numerous popular feature lengths including The Kid (1921) and The Gold Rush (1925). His relationship with the world's major conflicts became more direct with the release of The Great Dictator (1940), a direct parody of Adolf Hitler right as World War II was getting into full swing. Meanwhile, Chaplin's huge level of popularity and lifestyle began attracting suspicion in an increasingly paranoid United States of America. Right-wingers and moralists, fighting a war of their own against Communism suspected Chaplin was associated with this movement due to the messages in his films and some of his personal friendships. Similarly, Chaplin had been vocal in calling for a second front to be ope

Criminal Justice and Due Process

Justice is defined as the process or result of using laws to fairly judge and punish crimes and criminals; the quality of being just, impartial, or fair (Merriam-Webster, 2014). This to me is what I think of when I think of what justice should be. Equal treatment under the law is something that this country aspires to accomplish, but does not always meet. I realize that this is a rather cynical way of viewing the criminal justice system but for certain demographics in this country, the justice system is a source of despair as rather than a source of light and hope. One day, I would like to be a source of light for someone seeking justice for wrong done to them. Everyone seeking to better themselves by pursuing a degree in the criminal justice field should feel the same way. Police, courts, and corrections are identifiable as the main components of the criminal justice system (Intro to Criminal Justice, 2014). In order for the system to function effectively, all three factors must work together. Years past, the public played a role in the execution of justice, but with the advent of prosecutors, they assumed the role

Memoir - The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

There has always been much controversy regarding the relationship between parents and children through the ages. While some consider that parents are responsible for their children's material upbringing and that they need to provide their offspring with the basic needs, others believe that parents primarily need to focus on the intellectual upbringing of their children. Jeannette Walls' situation is self-explanatory when considering parents who would rather instill creative thinking in their children instead of trying to provide them with basic needs. Most people are inclined to associate parents with teachers and children with pupils; yet, not uncommonly children also take on the role of teachers. Through adopting such attitudes they can construct the limits and responsibilities for their parents. As Jeannette's parents, Rex and Rose Mary, attempted to provide their children with a different way of parenting, it was difficult for Jeannette and her siblings to understand what their ro

IKEA and Green Supply Chain Management

1. Introduction Owing to the rising greenhouse emission and the environmental pollution, a company's ecological footprint is seriously influencing the world's ecosystems, and the poor global environmental problems are changing a corporate strategy of a company (Saul et all. 2013, 42). "Green supply Chain Management (GSCM) is an approach to improve performance of the process and products according to the requirements of the environmental regulations" (Hsu and Hu 2008). Logistics activities and environmental developments are two major elements in GSCM. In short, logistics is defined as the management of the flow of materials, goods, services, money and information (Zheng 2012). The purpose of this essay is to evaluate a multinational corporation-Swedish home furnishing IKEA, which considers green supply chain management (GSCM) as an important strategic management to reduce environmental impacts in all the elements of the supply chain (Hsu and Hu 2008). The strategy is to minimi

Abstract This paper covers one of the most famous school shootings in American history; the massacre that occurred at Columbine high school. The increase in security on school campuses and the severity of policies regarding intruders also is covered throughout this paper. Before The Shooting April 20, 1999 was supposed to be a normal day for the students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the shooters of the incident, had this plan for 15 months that they were going to shoot down the school and everybody in it. In Eric's journal, he wrote that "he was left out of many activities, even when he tried to be involved" (Zero Hour). He even made a website t

Triggers of Juvenile Crime and Delinquency

Juvenile crime has always been so serious issue in many countries. In order to understand juvenile crime, it is important to understand who is juvenile. Juvenile is children or teenager in other words anyone who below the age of eighteen. Juvenile crime seems like innocent and harmless but it becomes more complicated and deadly in recent years than people's thought. According to statistics, juvenile crime arrest rate increased in the mid-2000s (ojjdp.gov) and juvenile delinquency is more than adult ones (nber.org). Although these rates decline in recent years, it is a still critical and universal problem for many countries (aic.gov.au). Generally, various article and study on juvenile delinquency may often focus on different reasons. There could be many reasons why juveniles commit crime but generally there are two main reasons which are psychological and family based. First of all, the role of psychology are considered to be important aspect to explain why juvenile commit crime. The first theory to explain children delinquency is psychodynamic theory (Freud, 1890-1930). According to Freud, our unconcious mind determine our behavior. He talked about three

Perspectives on Crime Control

Question 1 What roles does the crime control perspective play in your thinking regarding the application of the constitution? The primary concern of the crime control perspective is to protect the society and maintain law and order. It enforces the laws as outlined in the constitution. In exercising the various crime control procedures, the law enforcers are also expected to obey the rule of law. The constitution clearly spells out the rights of rights of suspects and the consequences of breaking certain laws. What the crime control does is to ensure that, as they handle various criminal suspects or punishing the law breakers, they must do so in a fair and just manner. In the case where someone is suspected of a crime, the constitution allows the person to undergo an investigation to ascertain if the charges are correct. The constitution grants the law enforcement officials the power to collect evidence in order to prove beyond reasonable doubt whether the person charged has committed

Short Story - The Psychiatric Hospital

She sat there in an empty field with the overly tall and too skinny boy who she calls "love" as he placed the white and lilac wildflowers carefully in her hair, being cautious as to make sure the others wouldn't fall out. His eyes, the color of smoked wood, were filled with awe and stretched wide, concentrating on the way her brightly colored hair twisted down her shoulders and back. The contrast of the pale flowers to the neon colors spread throughout her hair brought a delicate feel to the almost rough appearance of the young girl's exterior. Jack was the name of the boy she called "love," and her smile grew as he finished the arrangement of flowers that was placed in her hair. His smirk was evident, proud of the work he had done in the girl's hair, but that smirk was replaced by a large smile as well when he saw the look on her face. "Beautiful," he whispered to her even though they were the only two souls within a mile of the grassy land. She inhaled

Responses to the Syrian Civil War

"Officials of the United Nations describe Syria as the worst humanitarian disaster since Rwanda in 1994."1 The Syrian Civil War has gained much public support at a national and international level for various reasons depending on the interest of the groups involved. The roots of the Syrian revolution lie in the torture of the students who by declaring anti-government statements, rebelled against the Assad regime. This resulted in street protests that have gained a great deal of media attention. President Bashar al-Assad's response to these demonstrations was ruthless, evident in the number of causalities till date. Many have died due to the numerous government led massacres, while others have been displaced. The atrocities the Syrian people have faced and still continue to face have been characterized as crimes against humanity and violations of international humanitarian law. What began as a peaceful protest swiftly turned into a malevolent bloodshed sustained by a collectio

Gun Control is Not the Solution

Violence is inevitable. No matter what precautions are taken by society, Americans will always be faced with a vast problem of violence in the streets. Criminals have been overlooked for many years because society has decided to focus on the brighter pictures in life. Proper actions should be taken to stop these individuals, however, having gun control in the United States is not the way to go. Gun control must be made stricter through more thorough criminal background checks and probing interviews of people buying guns, thus preventing gun purchases by those with criminal records or less than good intent. The United States has had a chaotic relationship with guns and their role in society. As stated in the Second Amendment, the ownership of a gun is legal and therefore is a right to all Americans willing to obtain the proper gun license and registration needed for their state of residency. Guns were used for hunting and self-defense when the amendment was first set in place and are still used for this purpose. Overall, guns in the United States are used eighty-times more of

Arts, Craft and Design

"Simplicity, carried to an extreme, becomes elegance."- Jon Franklin Many individuals agree that Art, craft and design are the same thing. This paper will examine the slight differences within each category. From one of the readings, Howard Risatti wrote A theory of Craft: Function and Aesthetic Expression. Howard Risatti wrote A theory of Craft: Function and Aesthetic Expression. This is an inescapable book for anybody interested in Craft. Risatti explains that there are logical groupings that tell little about the objects, which can be included in several categories. He then goes for a technique- based classification. He examines the issues by comparing handmade ceramics, metal works, turning, blowing, throwing, weaving, and furniture to painting, glass, sculpture, photography, and machine-made designs. Howard Risatti's argument is that craft objects are defined by having a connection to the body, and being formed aroun

Is Torture Ever Warranted?

Introduction The Oxford dictionary states that torture is "The action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or in order to force them to do or say something". In the past prisoners would be tortured to an unspeakable degree to obtain the information they require, some countries still condone this action today. Alan M Dershowitz believes that torture is acceptable in some scenarios where time is essential. No matter how pressing the situation or its urgency torture should never be a used as a means to prevent potential terror attacks. Rather than using torture, through shared intelligence terror plots can be prevented. There will be three parts to this essay, the first being the argument reconstruction and analysis. The second part will be a counter position to Dershowitzs torture warrants and the third will be how the value theory would assess the ethical issue. Part 1: Argument Reconstruction & Analysis In Alan M Dershowitz's The Case for Tortu

Norse Viking Ships

The Norse Vikings found importance in expansion and the seizing of land and goods, the way this was done was by taking control of the sea with their powerfully built ships into different countries. Even today, these Viking ships from the past are found and researched about the possibilities of the reasons of the uses of these ships, including raids and travelling. In "Njal's saga", there were many instances of how these Vikings got not only physical and valuable items, but as well as honor and loyalty from their friends and family. Vikings have not only become the most successful early explorers but most famous of pillaging and raiding among other historical people. Viking ships are the way that we can look at the past of the Vikings and contemplate their way of life through observations of historical archaeology of ships that have been found all over different continents. How these ships were built and how they were used creates more imagination of how Norse Vikings behaved

Ethics in Business Research by Darlington Tawanda Chigori

The role of ethics should never be underestimated. It is what makes the societies that we live in, businesses, governments and at large the world that we live in .Ethics are fundamental to the existence of different bodies to operate and continue in operation, even to times indefinite. Some such as Velasquez, Andre, Shanks and Meyer (2010) shared that ethics are a code of conduct that governs between what is right and wrong. However there is more to ethics than just a view of right and wrong. The question then is; what is ethics? Ethics can be fully described as the backbone, life blood that supports every living thing (people, businesses, institutions, countries and other organizational bodies) to discern a conduct that enables them to live in congruence and co-ordination devoid of doing any harm through recognizing issues that might cause clash and inharmoniousness within an existing body. Ethics play a fundament

The Ash Garden - Indoctrination

Growing up in the many diverse homes as children do, many of which grow, filled with different beliefs on how they should look at life. Indoctrination refers to instructions given through a system of beliefs. Indoctrination is similar to psychologically grooming a person to believe something which may or may not be true with little to no evidence, which can be simply known as brain washing. In the Dennis Bock Novel, The Ash Garden, Protagonist Emiko is experienced with many examples of indoctrination throughout her young stages of life. Emiko is groomed to believe that all Americans are not to be trusted, the best way to deal with pain and shame is silence, and death is inevitable and it is to be faced. Through the anlayzation of quotations and details from the novel I will support the theory of how Emiko's beliefs are based through the indoctrinating experiences she underwent. Believing only what she was taught, Emiko was brainwashed by the teachings from school to believe that

Issues of Welfare Reform

Welfare is the provision of a minimal level of well-being and social support for all citizens, sometimes referred to as public aid. Welfare is something widely used throughout America. There are many different types of welfare such as; TANF (temporary assistance for needy families), food stamps, medical insurance, and utility assistance. A variety of people can receive these benefits under many different circumstances, which are unnervingly easy. The misuse of welfare is high, and welfare reform needs to be taken. When welfare is heard, it is thought that America is helping out their citizens who are in need but unfortunately this isn't the case. Welfare is provided by governments or their agencies, by private organizations, or a combination of both. Funding for welfare usually comes from general government revenue, but when dealing with charities or NGOs, donations may be used. Welfare is causing people to not obtain jobs, it is going to illegal immigrants and refugees instead of Amer

Short Story - The Last Wish

My face and neck perspire as I sprint away, my heart pounding so hard in my chest, I think it may burst. That thing-the thing with the narrow pupils-is after me. With any glance it steals my way, I shudder in fear as if those eyes could send me straight to hell themselves. The adrenaline pumps through my body, and my feet forcefully collide with the cracked, gray cement blurring away in my peripheral vision. It is an understatement to say I am terrified as I am running for my life. The thing grips a knife in his right hand that is in a coat of a crusty, brown substance of which I can only assume is dry blood. My mind is racing with all different kinds of thoughts, but all deal with an untimely end. What if I trip and fall, allowing him to catch up with me? What if I become short of breath and fail to continue escaping? What if he miraculously catches up to me and grips my neck until it snaps in half? What if he drives that knife so deep in my chest I can feel the blood drain so painle

The Problem of Income Inequality

The rich are more selfish. My mom she has to pay the rent at the end of every month or we would have to leave. One time my neighbor had a party and the smell of weed was so strong, the scent moved freely in my kitchen. We told our landowner and he did not do anything. The next day our landowner posted a piece of paper on our door saying that we broke the rules related to swimming hours and in fact, it was not even us. Lastly the rent is 1,300 plus all the other bills my mom struggles a lot, just recently my uncle stayed after school to work on a project and did not give me the key. When I arrived home I went to the office to see if someone could come to open the door for me. When I got there, there was a pink paper posted on the wall that said if the tenant forgot their the keys the fee to open the door would be 25 dollars. Not only did we get in trouble for nothing, he did not give the neighbors a warning for smoking and being loud at night, but we had to pay more for nothing the fact

Michael Jordan: The G.O.A.T.

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again. And that is why I succeed." Only a handful of athletes have ever had an impact so large on the game that they as individuals were bigger than the sport they played. Even more of a rarity is an individual who impacts not only their country, but are global icons. One of the most popular icons of our time is none other than Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan is one of the most iconic human beings our generation has ever seen, not just for what he did for basketball, but the impact he's had on society. This paper will examine Michael Jordan's on the court accomplishments, off the court accomplishments, as well as his legacy on the sport of basketball and society as a whole. Michael Jordan is at the top of the leaderboards and record books for just about any basketball related feat, proving why he
