Rush Limbaugh - High School Students and Condoms

In Rush Limbaugh's essay, "Condoms: The New Diploma," he voices his opinion on the absurdity of distributing condoms to high school students. Limbaugh's article first appeared on his 1992 bestseller, "The Way Things Ought to Be." His argument is that the only method of birth control that should be taught in sex education classes is abstinence should taught as be the only sex education because having sex at an early stage of life could lead to increased teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The audience that this essay appeals to is the adult population who are concerned about the U.S. youth. The author's purpose is to convince the reader that condom distribution in schools can lead to an increased number of sexually active teenagers and encourage promiscuity. He wants the reader to understand that distribution of free condoms in public schools is ridiculous and misguided. Limbaugh's essay is a one sided opinion that maintains a constant thesis and is humorousl

Digital Nation Response

There is a common misconception that every successful company looks out for the best interests of their customers/clients. This may be true for some companies, but in reality, many could care less about their consumers. Just like the tobacco companies, the food industry has no ethical standards when it comes to serving the consumers who built and support their company. The relationship between consumers and the food industry is that of a completely unbalanced scale. Consumers continue to feed the food industry while the food industry takes advantage of them, and make profits for themselves especially our capitalist capital the United States. Steven Johnson, in his essay, "Listening to Feedback," delves into the topic of how positive and negative feedback plays a role in our society. The food industry has gone unchecked for too long. For this type of unjust to cease, the food industry needs to be remind that consumers are the ones that hold the power. Consumers must change this

The Hoax of the Amityville Horror House

American history is chock-full of mysterious, often horrifying, stories of ghosts and the houses they inhabit. An old, abandoned house with shutters unhinging can conjure feelings of fear in the bravest of men. But few homes in America have provided such an indelible, iconic image of the supernatural, as the house on 112 Ocean Avenue, in Amityville, New York; the heart of the infamous "Amityville Horror" hauntings. It was in this house, in 1973, that Ronald Joseph "Butch" Defeo Jr. took a .35 Marlin rifle and executed six of his family members while they were sleeping; and it was two years later that George and Kathleen Lutz, along with their three children, purchased the home on Ocean Avenue and moved in. What they thought as their dream home turned out to be everything but that. The family stayed in the house for a mere twenty-eight days. They claim that the supernatural was the cause of their departur

Abraham - God's Fulfillment of a Promise

The Bible's book of Genesis is known for its exposition of our beginnings - the first "five days" of creation ushering in the heavens, the earth, the seas and all the creatures who dwell within, the land and it's vast array of vegetation, insects, amphibians and mammals. And on the "sixth day of creation," before His day of rest, God performed what He deemed to be his most wonderful creation; a man - made in his image. well as for the initial fall of man. Genesis describes the re-establishment of a relationship between God and man, through the Jewish people. This book recounts how Abram and his descendants are promised a land, a nation and a blessing. (Genesis 12:1-2 Life Application Study Bible) Ultimately, fulfillment of God's promise would require substantial faith, patience, and devotion. Genesis provides an understanding of the relationship and promises between God and one man, who would become the father of the world's three greatest religions of Christianity, Judaism and Isl

The Just War Theory

Under the "Just War Theory," a conflict is deemed unjust if one of the jus ad bellum (the right to go to war) and in jus bello (the right to conduct war) is not met. In "The Moral Equality of Combatants," by Carl Ceulemans, he says combatants cannot be blamed under jus ad bellum responsibility. In the argument, Ceulemans concludes combatants only become unjust combatants when they are aware of their involvement in the illegitimate activity of an unjust war. He then provides different scenarios which give the discrepancies of adhering to ad jus bellum and the in jus bello responsibilities of combatants. Ceulemans divides the argument into three parts: military subordination, serving an unjust government and serving a just government in an unjust war. His anecdotal evidence leads to the conclusion that under a legitimate government, whether a war is just or unjust, a combatant has moral equality. Before breaking down Ceulemans' argument it is important to understand how he views the ro

Comparison - Macbeth and Wuthering Heights

It is evident that both the play "Macbeth," and the novel, "Wuthering Heights," are driven by the protagonists' incessant fixations with forces that are destructive to their existence; thus ultimately establishing obsession as a critical element in defining both works in the gothic genre. Macbeth's obsession is based upon his thirst for power, whereas Heathcliff and Cathy's is centered on their ceaseless desire for one another. However although both novels have been constructed with the characters' fixations playing a significant role, it is arguable that their obsessions aren't innate, and are rather the products of preceding events influencing their desires and disposition. Arguably the defining moment that commences Macbeth's obsession for power occurs in Act 1, Scene 3 when the witches relay their prophecies to both him and Banquo, naming him "Thane of Glamis," "Thane of Cawdor" and "King Hereafter." Shakespeare portrays Macbeth to display initial disbelief in the news, indicated

The Wife by Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson's, poem, "The Wife" reveals the poet's concerns for domestic femininity in middle-class families through expressing the gender roles of females and using the term "wife" frequently. Although she could never be a wife in her lifetime, the reflection of self-private and the domesticity of household females could be seen in the poem through the contrasts in the three stanzas. Evidently, the persona of the poem is female, and conventionalities of marriage are expressed from the perspective of a female. At some stage, Dickinson has the notion that to be a woman, who comfort the idea of being a "woman", marriage is an inevitable part of a girl's life as "it's safer so". As a matter of fact, Dickinson's notion of marriage would have treated as a norm of a woman's life in the early 19th century of American society. Once a woman was married, her life would be confined and bounded by the domestic sphere since the mainstream back then had th

Religious Symbolism in Borderlands

Gloria Anzaldua's "Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza," is a novel which encompasses the life of a Chicana living in the United States-Mexico border area. The life, culture, and viewpoints of the Chicana on the border are impacted by a variety of experiences, a specific culture, proud histories, and the physical surroundings of the border. A major factor in the life of a Chicana, especially in the border region is the folk-Catholicism that many of these women embrace. Folk-Catholicism is a form of Catholicism that embraces some of the ideologies of the indigenous Aztecs. Anzaldua goes to lengths to ensure that the religion of the Chicana woman is understood and even devotes a whole chapter in her book to explaining some of the facets of this area. The primary source of the Chicana religion traces back to the Aztec people and their beliefs. The religion that the Chicana embraces makes up her very identity, from her actions down to her very soul. The origin of religious symbolism

Greek and Roman Ancient Civilization

Ancient Roman Civilization Ancient Rome was a seaboard of civilization. In the last two centuries B.C., the Romans extended and strengthened the Mediterranean network created by the ancient Greek traders and settlers. Roman civilization remained dependent on the sea as its principal axis of communication and trade and along which travelled influences and people. Documented evidence shows that the Romans started as a small community of peasants, lacking in fertile soils, metals, and unprovided with port (Sacks, Murray, and Lisa 53). There is a common belief that they were essentially peaceful people, who acquired empire by mere accident and made their conquests in the course of self-defense. With time, they became warlike by necessity, as they had no other way of gaining wealth except at the expense of their neighbors. Roman power fast spread and once imposed, it survived by winning or forcing collaboration of local elites: magistrates of conquered communities, and chieftains of tribe

The Journey of Mahatma Gandhi

The name Mahatma is seen throughout the modern days for the remembrance of former leader, Mohandas Gandhi. Gandhi's call for world peace has caused him to be forever thought of as Mahatma; the 'great soul.' Gandhi recognized imperialism as a method to destroy one's peace of mind and their society because of the avarice ways of the human species. Gandhi assumed that a society based on civilization is but a goal for profit ignoring all possible factors of what might result in the country being stolen from. His writings and work ethics were influenced by the years taken from the imperialist era of the British over India. The process of India turning into a westernized civilization in Gandhi's opinion does not fit the definition of a civilization in which is a criteria based on positive acts. As reality opens his eyes, Gandhi's opinion of political overtaking by the British changes throughout his journey which is shown throughout the text of his book the Hind Swaraj. Gandhi's educat

Restructuring a Middle School Curriculum

When Great Meadows Middle School decided to restructure their curriculum, they chose to take an integrated approach to teaching across the content areas. While integration can be an effective way to teach middle school students, there are some inherent problems with implementation and maintenance of the system. Some of these issues are easily rectified by moderating the breadth and depth of integration; other issues are systemic in nature and can only be addressed by modifying curriculum integration to fit within established educational policies and practices. The term "integrated curriculum" can mean many things to educators; it can encompass enrichment in a discipline or connections between disciplines along topics or themes so that subject areas become secondary to the theme (Weilbacher, 2001). No matter the level of integration, there are advantages and disadvantages to the approach and using it effectively requires a delicate balancing act between the needs to address the requir

Walt Whitman and the Emergence of Transcendentalism

The transcendentalist perspective on life, as defined by Walt Whitman and Durand through their creative and artistic mediums, is an eternal and unbroken cycle that is void of a strict beginning or an absolute end. It's an experience where an individual continuously grows and develops. The illusion that both are separate is a misconception that Walt Whitman seeks to rectify through the sixth poem by stating that "all goes onward and outward, nothing collapses" (Line 37). Similarly, Durand uses the image of a continuous river, a path, providing life to a new generation of foliage and nature, which arcs back towards the beginning of the stream creating a never-ending circle for the process to undoubtedly continue. Whitman's choice of the words, "onward" and "outward," can be seen as a continuing onward cycle of life or spiral outward of increasing progress as time goes on, further indicating that life is not only an eternal process but that it compounds based off of growth made in the past. This interpretation, again, shares striking similarities to Durand's painting, in that the lifeblood of water given to the trees causes them to grow. And as the se

Foster Care and Child Welfare

One of the actions I took to promote a system change was to partner with The John Burton Foundation (JBF), The Children's Law Center (CLC) and Larkin Street Youth Services (LSYS) and go up to the Sacramento State Capitol and Lobby and inform legislators about SB 528 (Parents in Foster Care). First, I would like to give a brief summary of SB 528. The passage of this bill ensures access to child care by prioritizing foster youth who are parents for subsidized child care. Parenting and pregnant youth are 200% are more likely to drop out of high school than to graduate from high school, leaving them without the means to achieve economic stability. One key reason for this is a lack of reliable, affordable child care. SB 528 directs the Department of Social Services to collect data on parenting and pregnant youth. Currently, the number of youth in foster care who have children in California, either as custodial or non-custodial parents, is unknown. Knowing this information is nec

Labor Control and the Postwar Growth Model in Latin America

In the book "Labor Control and the Postwar Growth Model in Latin America," Ian Roxborough argues that the economic model known as import substitution industrialization (ISI) was employed amongst the Latin American countries after World War II as a compromise to meet the ever growing social and political demands within those countries. During this time period, there existed two main opposing forces, 1) the reactionary agrarian and mining elites that had majority of the political control for decades and 2) the mobilizing labor forces that demanded political reform. As these two forces engaged in this political struggle, Latin American policy makers were also seeking outside capital from the United States further causing the implementation of the ISI model to be more conservative. Many elites, having a desire to maintain their land and power, not

Gender as a Process of Social Construction

Gender as a Process of Social Construction As part of our society, we have classified the "natural" differences between sexes as gender. The classification of female and male is also contingent with age; we have boys and girls, men and women, grandfather and grandmother ( Goldberg and Adriano, 2007). We have become so accustomed to the classification of male and female that we tend to interpret gender strictly as a biological state of being. When examining the idea of gender it is easy to interpret it as a simple phenomenon. That is, gender is widely perceived as simply being a natural occurrence that happens at birth. Yet, studying gender as a social-economic driver rather than just a natural phenomenon, allows us to understand that there is more to gender than simply human nature. In reality, gender is continually been re-created through" human interactions, and is the texture and order of social life." In other words, we identify the differences between male and

US Army Soldier - Lieutenant Parnell

Lieutenant Parnell lived the Army values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, integrity, honor, and personal courage: 1. Loyalty Parnell knew what his unit could do. He didn't doubt their abilities when in combat and put 100 percent into them. 2. Duty If his job was to defend an OP when outnumbered, he did it. He didn't back away from the challenge. His job was to play along with the village elder, and even though he knew the elder was corrupt, he did it. 3. Respect Parnell was a walking example of respect. Everyone he encountered got respect, even if they didn't deserve it. 4. Selfless Service This is self-explanatory. Even when he was injured he still did all he could to help his platoon out of that firefight. He yelled at a captain to get his men treated. He lived for his men, which got them to fight for him in return. 5. Honor Parnell was honorable throughout his entire tour. Honor is more of a characteristic of quality. Living out the other Army values shows honor an

Bank of America - Too Big to Fail?

The ripples of the financial crisis of 2008 are still extending into the largest financial institutions in the United States. On August 23rd, 2011, rumors swept Wall Street that Bank of America may be get pushed into an involuntarily, government-orchestrated rescue by its smaller rival JP Morgan Chase. Bank of America is defending itself against an endless barrage of multibillion-dollar lawsuits and government investigations concerning their alleged issuance of defective mortgage backed securities. BusinessWeek described Bank of America as having "the year from hell" as their stock price dropped from $13.34 a share to as low as $6 a share on August 23rd. Through August 2011, Bank Of America has paid $40 billion in mortgage claims and settlements, and an additional $30 billion from the disastrous Countrywide Financial acquisition. These losses have led experts to question the amount of capital on Bank of America's financial statements. The mortgage onslaught has investors w

Obstacles for Women in the Workplace

Abstract Leadership is erroneously seen as possessing the authority and social charm needed to influence others to reinforce and support the completion of tasks. However, leadership isn't solely a matter of authority or talent, but a requirement to invest and inspire people. A leader's calling includes addressing the needs of the individuals being served, growing further into oneself and achieving results, while also building a team that produces. In today's world, men are handpicked to fill such roles, especially in health care organizations, because the perception is that men make better leaders. As of now, health care organizations are placing emphasis on decentralizing and have shifted focus to team-oriented management and there is a need for strong leadership and increased diversity. Women have the right communication skills and spirit to edify and such foster team-building relationships, which could meet the needs of the changing health industry. Studies conducted in the workpl

Museographic - Descriptions of Museum Collections

The tradition of historic and ethnographic museums evolved from the concept of the 17th and 18th century cabinets of curiosity (Benton, 2012, pp. 101), from which it inherited its focus on the display of objects to reconstruct the stories and habits of certain civilizations (Benton, 2012, pp. 101). A conventional display makes use of authentic objects accompanied by photographs, text, films and other contextualizing means. As these means are not objective and influence the view and opinion of the visitor, one could state that 'representation can be regarded as the active play between creating a fictional work and making reference to a real event' (Hornstein, Jacobowitz, 2003, pp. 3). This is what is considered problematic when it comes to commemorating the Shoah; where fiction comes into play there is not only the risk of anesthetization and mythologization, but also the fear not to do justice to the suffering of the victims. For both practical and conceptual reasons another rep

The Lady with the Dog by Chekhov

The "The Lady with the Dog" is Chekhov's short story about the love affair between two married people. The main character of the story is a middle age man who is married with two children already. Due to his unsatisfactory marriage, he started to have extra-marital affairs with different women. But he never finds true love until he meets the lady with a little dog. The entire story seems like a love story, but it also reveals a man who is trying to find his happiness and freedom in the society he lived in. Through the story, author Chekhov shows us that sometime the moral standards will stand in our way toward freedom and happiness we desire. It also shows us that sometimes our freedom and happiness is restricted by the society we live in. In the story Chekhov describes the main character of the story as a victim of the society. The main character of the story is a middle age man called Gurov. His freedom was restricted earlier in his life. He was talked into marriage when

The Benefits of Learning English

I began to study the English language when I was thirteen years old. My goal was that someday I would be able to communicate in English fluently, and more importantly, with confidence. I hoped that mastering the English language would help me not only to expand my personal knowledge, but to open limitless opportunities in my future. At that time, it  seemed  almost  impossible for me to be able to speak English. However, as most teenagers, I was easily drawn to anything that sparked my interest. Both at school and at home, I immersed myself in learning this foreign language and concentrated all of my attention in excelling in it. Although I had become quite proficient in reading and writing in English  by the time I was 18, I still believed I was one of the worst speakers. Doubt and nervousness were eating me from the inside as an acid. I was afraid to open my mouth and say even one word in English. However, one memorable experience had completely transformed

The Young Women's Christian Association

The organization I chose to write about is the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). The YWCA's mission is to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all (YWCA USA, n. d.). Many associated them with the Young Men Christian Association, but these are two totally separate organizations. It began in England back in 1855 and has expanded globally (YWCA USA, n. d.). According to YWCA USA (n. d.) the first goal of the organization was to be social support for women in England. YWCA is the largest women organization in the world (YWCA USA, 2013). YWCA's foundation of Christian principles is still prevalent, but their focus has been amended to include social programs and services. As the organization evolved they began working with issues such as refugees, health, HIV and AIDS, literacy, human rights of women and girls, poverty, education, racism, and youth (YWCA USA, n. d.). The organization has been a forerunner in movements for race, labor,

Gangs and Gun Control in Canada

Gangs and criminal organizations" come in many forms - street gangs, youth gangs, organized crime gangs, drug gangs, terrorist gangs, prison gangs, etc.. A gang is a static or fluid organization, network or collective, possesses identifiable leadership or a leadership structure, associates on a continuous basis. It has a main purpose or activity the facilitation or commission of a variety of offenses planned or undertaken to generate material benefits or financial gain, has the potential for violence or intimidation to facilitate its criminal activity and it consists of three or more members. Street gangs are different from these typical organized gangs because they typically identify with a particular geographic area (territory, or turf), largely feature individuals under the age of twenty-eight, have fluid leadership structure and member participation. They may display common colors, insignia and communication patterns like hand signs, graffiti and codes. They are also less sophisti

International Exchange Programs

The most common form of student mobility is the exchange program. These programs are designed to improve relationships between countries and by that balance the quality of the education in the world and enhance the offer of jobs within a particular country and abroad. Exchange programs allow secondary school and university students to study or work abroad. During these programs, students live in host families or in student's hostel and attend partner secondary schools or universities for one or two semesters or work for an international company, educational or research centre or any other qualified organization for up to a year. It has become very popular among students, because they could learn or improve their foreign languages, get a chance to meet new people and communicate with them, acquire experience and knowledge about different country, their traditions and values and gain skills, which is crucial for their future career. The most famous exchange programs in the Czech Republi

The Case for Educational Inclusion

Abstract "Special Education" is not a place. It is supports and services brought to students through their individualized education plan. The word "inclusion" in terms of education generally means that students with disabilities are supported in general education classes within their schools and that the students receive the specialized instruction they need within the context of the core curriculum. This paper will attempt to persuade the reader that the inclusion of children with disabilities within the general education classroom is a benefit, not a detriment, to the education process. Position Statement First there was mainstreaming, then integration, and now inclusion. At first, it may seem silly to keep revising the way services for children with disabilities are described. However, the words used describe the prevailing attitude. While the words themselves may not be terribly important, the attitude about including children with disabilities in activities
