The Formation of Colonial Societies

The United States is virtual melting pot of different cultures and races. Some of the first ingredients in this pot were introduced in the late 1500's and early 1600's when the formation of the British colonies of New England and the Chesapeake occurred. Due to the nature of those who were settling in the region and the differing environmental characteristics, two distinct British colonial societies were formed in these regions that differed in the composition of their societies, economies and forms of governance. Even though New England and the Chesapeake regions were settled largely by people of English origin, there existed two different groups of settlers that founded each colony upon two different purposes. Those who settled in New England, the Puritans, were trying to escape persecution in England from the Anglican Church and founded the colony for religious reasons. As the definition of the word "Puritan" in page 70 suggests, these settlers wanted to reform the E

The Protesting of Westboro Baptist Church

As a member of a Christian church and the United States Army, I feel as though people should not feel the need to express their opinionated hate towards others for various reasons. A good example of people expressing such feelings is the conflict with the Westboro Baptist church protest. Many members of the Westboro Baptist church feel a very strong opinion about homosexuals and decided they would demonstrate their strong feelings at the funerals of several fallen troops. These people give the Baptist community a bad name and personally, I feel as though we should love the sinner but hate the sin. People need to be pointed in the right way to turn from destruction. Everyone has their own struggles in life and everyone needs some guidance every once in a while. Some people use such a reason, to convince others, they are going in the wrong direction. Christ came to show us love and that he has come for us all. Picketing these soldiers who gave all for you to have your freedom is morall

My Little Home

My little home is probably the oldest house on my street. It was built in the late 1930's and still has much of its original trappings and architecture intact. My little home is white with green trim and has a beautifully paved driveway, which stretches from the street all the way into the backyard. There used to be a lovely matching white and green two car garage in the backyard of my little home, which not only complimented but also completed the beauty and elegant style of my home, but it has over the years deteriorated and was torn down as an eyesore. The little home and the property itself belonged to my grandfather Abraham Brown a decorated WWII veteran, and was later passed down to my father upon the death of my grandfather who willed it to me upon his passing. It sat for years in disrepair with its windows busted out, plumbing, electrical wiring and internal fixtures being stripped by neighborhood "scavengers!" When you first entered the my little house you could

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's)

While chemical pollution has been the scourge of the 20th century, biological pollution from GMO crops poses even more hazards as we enter the new millennium. Unlike chemicals that are released into the environment, GMOs are living beings that will reproduce and spread uncontrollably, with no possibility of containment or clean-up. The consequence of GMO's is the increased use of chemicals. An analysis of thousands of field trials has shown that farmers who grow GMO soybeans use 4 times more herbicides than farmers who grow natural soy varieties. The biotech industry claims that no one has been harmed by eating GMO food. But doctors and scientists warn that there is not enough evidence to ensure that these foods are safe in the human diet. In fact, there is ample evidence of the risks of GMOs. Transfer of allergens through the genetic engineering process has been documented, yet GMOs now on the market contain proteins that have never been assessed for allergenic potential. The rise o

Energy - Consumption and Development

The energy we use varies from year to year. As our central heat and air units age, they will require more energy to operate. If it stops working in the winter, then you implement space heaters to heat your home. This will create a higher energy usage. The weather will always play havoc with your energy usage on a daily basis. If it is extremely hot in the summer months or extremely cold in the winter, your unit will work harder to maintain the set temperature for your home. Sometimes the age of other appliances will also increase your energy usage over time. Last month we replaced our washer and dryer, with newer energy efficient models, this month our electric bill was $10 dollars less than last month. There are many ways to reduce your energy usage; changing your lighting from traditional bulbs to fluorescent bulbs is costly but they use less energy than traditional bulbs and

Laws, Loopholes and Gun Control

Through a comprehensive study of war-related deaths, the Congressional Research Service was able to determine that over 1.1 million Americans have been killed at war since our nation was born. According to Mark Shields of Politifact in 2012, they were able to confirm the total number of gun-related deaths in America since 1968 is over 1.3 million. This shows that since 1968, more Americans have died from gunfire than were killed in all the wars of this country's history combined. It also establishes that the topic of gun control is a controversial issue that has been widely discussed in the media as of late, as well as in politics. The issue becomes a hot topic following recent high-profiled shootings. These events, as well as many others in the past, led to a public outcry for Congress, as well as President Obama to push for gun control. This country should not be having this debate every time there is a shooting. What we want to do as a country is to prevent these types of events fro

The Unessacery Death of Ashley Smith

Abstract Ashley Smith had severe behavioral issues and was placed in segregation after she threw a crab apple at a postal officer. She was transferred to several different facilities but received no treatment. Ashley had a history of self-harm and would choke herself until she passed out. The correctional officers had been told to not go into her cell if she was "still breathing, talking, and moving." This had a significant impact on the outcome of her stay in the correctional facility. On October 19, 2007, Ashley Smith tired a piece of cloth around her neck and laid on the floor as the correctional officers watched. They did enter the cell once Ashley had stopped moving but it was too late. Ashley had committed suicide while the officers were standing outside her cell. This was a very preventable incident. The officers were charged and the warden and deputy were fired but the charges were dropped and Ashley Smiths family file a lawsuit against the federal government for 11 million dol

Common Causes of Revolution

A "revolution," as defined in class (HI 469, NCSU) by Professor Robins, is a radical and often sudden change in a stratification system, power relations, or paradigm. The terms of this definition are not only applicable to many events throughout history, but also specifically connectable to many of civilizations most notorious revolutions. When identifying what the major causes of revolutions are, hence the causes of a change in a stratification system, power relations, or paradigm, it is most effective to analyze a few of the revolutions that we can agree are unanimously "textbook" and see what the major causes of those were. In the French Revolution of the late 1700's, there existed a strong economic divide between the rich and the poor. The majority of the people lived impoverished while the French elites, most of which were aristocrats of the Monarchy lived much more privileged lives. This eventually led t

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," focuses on two character's wild, drug-addled pursuit of the American Dream. The movie is an adaptation by Terry Gilliam of Hunter S. Thompson's book by the same title. The book is a travelogue of a trip Thompson took to Las Vegas in 1971 as a journalist reporting on a motorcycle race in the Nevada desert. His companion, who in reality, is Oscar Zeta Acosta, his attorney, accompanies him to offer "legal advice " (F&L). Raoul Duke, played by Johnny Depp, is widely accepted as the alter ego of Hunter S. Thompson, and Dr. Gonzo, is the pseudonym for Acosta. The movie is subtitled A Savage Journey to The Heart of the American Dream, however when this movie was filmed, I do not think that Gilliam ever intended to show any of the characters actually attaining the American Dream. Rather he used Thompson's account of his trip to Las Vegas to show what has truly happened to this dream in the early 1970s. J. Hoberman who is a senior film critic for The Village V

An Overview of Information Technology

1. Introduction The terms "information technology"" and "IT"" are widely used in business and the field of computing. People use the terms generically when referring to various kinds of computer-related work, which sometimes confuses their meaning. With all the current remarkable development of information technology, it has played an integral part of other. Wherever, information technology (IT) is very important for human. It has been very helpful in the present, and also in the near future people can connect with people in a different place or time, no longer separated by geographical distance. For example, from the past, if people want to communicate from long distance, they had to send mail by doves, which was uncomfortable way. Later, computer was invented. Then, laptops come along and become one of the most popular technologies that are favored by almost everyone, especially teenagers. With information technology the way people communicate together is much better. People can see

Gravimetric Analysis of Chloride Salt

Purpose Determining the Chloride amount in an unknown salt with explanations of the techniques used in the process of gravimetric analysis. Theory: The Chloride in the unknown salt is precipitated by the reaction of Chloride ions with Silver ions producing Silver Chloride which is insoluble in water making it possible to collect it as a precipitate later on through filtration. The above process is shown in the equation below: Ag+(aq) + Cl(aq)  AgCl(s) Though the produced salt is insoluble, some small amount of the precipitate does dissolve in water as shown in the equation below: AgCl(s)  Ag+(aq) + Cl-(aq) Looking at the above two equations it is clear that the precipitation reaction is reversible. As a result some of the precipitate returns back to separate Silver and Chloride ions. The greatest chance of solubility of the precipitate back to ions occurs when the exact amount of Silver ions are added to precipitate the chloride ions making

Ecological Problems and International Security

The aim of this essay is to assess whether ecological problems are increasingly affecting the international security. My supporting argument is that it is true that the environmental problems are becoming a dominant security threat. The logic of my thesis is that ecological problems such as climate change and environmental calamities deeply affect the economic growth of a country as well as its political and social development. Considering how the climate change and the environmental issues are nowadays one of the principle topics in international organizations' and State's meetings' agendas, the objective of this paper is to show how this issue is becoming a dominant threat to international security. In this paper, I will examine three aspects involving international security. First, evaluating the notion of "international security ", in order to understand how ecological problems can affect it. Next, I will take into account the effects of climate change, providing examples of how

Philippine as an Archipelagic State

The Philippines is a strategically positioned and rich in resources archipelago, lying at the maritime intersections of Northeast and Southeast Asia, and linking the South China Sea with the Pacific Ocean. It has been called a typical shore state and is an archipelagic and nautical nation with over 7,000 islands, exclusively bordered and interconnected by seas. Not many towns or cities in the country are more than 100 km from shore. 78% of its provinces and 54% of municipalities, almost all major cities, and 62% of the population are coastal. Just as the seas have moulded our history and the foundation of the nation, we continue to depend on them for our livelihood and welfare, for communications and transportation, for defense and security, for leisure and the enjoyment of nature's blessings.1 A country that is being an archipelago has its own superiority and deprivation. The discreteness of the various regions, from islet to islet, from island to island, and being detached by huge a

Art and Literacy - Autobiography

Many people have a misconceived conception of what literacy is. I used to believe that literacy was only the ability to read. I was wrong. I have learned another very important sense of literacy. Drawing. Literacy is about being able to comprehend and interpret different "languages". What is meant by different languages is unknown terms to the common ear for certain hobbies, a way of communicating and learning new things. Drawing just seemed so simple and comprehendible to me when other pieces of literacy were not so easy. Literacy is a tactic used to discover a way to learn that best suits your ability. I am a college freshman and I feel that my literacy is still evolving. Drawing has changed my life, forever, as it will continue to do so. As I will demonstrate through this autobiography of my literacy, experiences gained through the process of "growing up " really do help build a person's identity. My earliest memory of literacy was spending time as a young, curious child, with a

The Long Journey of the Hobbit

Although the destination is significant, the journey is far more important. A person's identity and the destination itself are shaped by the obstacles and experiences encountered during their journey. The experiences and obstacles are necessary to the journey, whereas the destination is not because sometimes one journey leads to another, and the destination doesn't exist. When I was a young boy, I would always go to visit my grandparent's farm. I would walk the fields with my grandpa checking on the crops, trotting along all the way to the other side of the farm where the cows were. I would always complain about how aggravating it was to do this every morning and how much I desired to get it done and be back at the house. One day, while I moped querulously along with my grandfather, he turned to me and said "Why do you always complain about our walk? " Being the "wise " child, I was retorted "Because we do this every morning and we never even find anything wrong! What's the point of a

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County by Mark Twain

"The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," written by Mark Twain in 1865, is an American short story in which Twain portrays the era of the American Wild West during the gold rush of the mid nineteenth century. Twain accomplishes this through his use of regionalism in which he uses the setting, customs, and native dialect of the time to tell a humorous tall tale. He pulls from his own experiences as a gold miner and refers to his fellow gold miners as people who often went mad from their labor (mibba.com). The story itself is set in the ancient mining camp called Angel's, which is located in Calaveras County. The narrator of the story finds a man named Simon Wheeler in an old tavern and he spins the humorous and exaggerated tale of a man named Jim Smiley, who was known for his outrageous betting schemes. Twain's humorous, exaggerated and satirical writing depicts the American westerner of this time as somewhat uneducated and stupid, in comparison to the narrator, who is from

And Overview of Influenza

Introduction Influenza, commonly known as the "flu", is an acute viral infection of the respiratory tract caused by influenza viruses. Although it is often confused with other influenza-like illnesses, especially the common cold, influenza is a more severe disease caused by a different type of virus. A virus is a cluster of genes wrapped in a protein membrane, which is coated with a fatty substance that contains molecules called glycoproteins. Strains of the flu are identified according to the number of membranes and type of glycoproteins present. Although Influenza is not as severe as many viral infections it's almost the worst for viral infections of the respiratory tract. When you get the "flu " in the lungs, the lining of the respiratory tract is damaged by becoming swollen and inflamed. But the damage is not always permanent, and tissue heals within a couple of weeks. It is a respiratory disease, even though it infects the whole body. Every year, influenza strikes millions of

The Proper Timing of Prophylactic Antibiotics

Definition and Description of Clinical Nursing Problem Despite evidence of effectiveness of antimicrobials to prevent SSIs, previous studies have demonstrated inappropriate timing of prophylactic antibiotics within one prior to surgical incision. Studies performed in the 1960's and 1970's demonstrated that a common reason for failure of prophylaxis was delay of antibiotic administration until after the operation. Recent publication of the National Surgical Infection Prevention Project supports established guidelines for prophylactic antibiotics within one hour prior to surgical incision, yet timeliness is not regularly achieved" (Backster, Teo, Swift, Polk, & Harken, 2007). Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a major component to patient injury, mortality, and health care costs. Mortality rates are 2 to 3 times higher in patients in whom an SSI develops compared with uninfected patients, and hospital readmission rates are significantly increased. Surgical site infections "increase len

Religion as a Conservative Force

There are numerous ideas about whether religion acts as a conservative force or as a cause for social change. Some believe that it is a conservative force as it is seen as being traditional and defending moral values and it stabilizes society and preserves things as they are. However there is a paradox here as religions such as the Roman Catholic Church, who are very conservative, would welcome change in the form of a backwards step to a more traditional society. Others would argue that religion is a force for social change for example with liberation theology in Latin America, a movement wanting change for the poor. Functionalists believe that religion maintains social stability and that through the act of collective worship it helps unite individuals because it acts as a "social glue" that promotes value consensus and social solidarity. Durkheim argued that in order to see religion as a conservative force you need to look at three aspects. It maintains social solidarity, protects t

A Catalase Lab Report - Enzymes

An enzyme is something that helps to speed up a chemical reaction. The enzyme changes from reaction to reaction, but it always has the same impact. However, certain variables may cause the enzyme to have a more or less significant impact on the speed of each reaction. One of these variables that changes the effectiveness of an enzyme is temperature. There is an optimal functioning temperature for each enzyme in each reaction, depending on the desired change in speed. For some, this temperature is higher, and others lower. However, once this optimal temperature has been passed, the enzyme becomes less effective. A good comparison for the impact of temperature would be running. There is an optimal temperature at which every runner runs. If it is too hot or too cold, the runner may not run as fast as they could if it were, for example, 10 °C. However, the reason temperature impacts enzymes in that matter is due to kinetic energy. As the temperature increases, the kinetic energy also inc

Strength Of Southern Civil War Generals

In the beginning of the Civil War, the North believed that they would stomp out the South very quickly. Northerners quickly realized that this "little revolt"" would take much longer than expected because of the superiority of the Southern generals. Robert E. Lee was one of the greatest military minds of all time, The South had excellent military education and a reason to fight, and also had much military experience from the Mexican War. Robert E. Lee was an outstanding Civil War general. Before the war outbreak President Lincoln asked him to help and fight for the north but he had respectfully declined and took command of The Army Of Northern Virginia. Lee had a very timid style of command. Lee would not be and aggressive fighter and wait for the Union to come to him because he knew that it was harder to attack then it is to defend. Lee learned all of his war tactics the West Point where he graduated second in his class. General Lee's superiority was

Bank and Supervisory Responses to the Debt Crisis

The financial crisis that affected European Union's (EU) economies between 2007 and 2009 began in the United States. The crisis was due to the foreclosure of subprime mortgages that resulted in a sharp increase in losses, incurred by large banks in United States. European Union's economies were mainly affected due to the Large European financial institutions primarily adopting similar business models to those operational before the crisis in the United States. The severity of the crisis, the huge losses and costs incurred by private shareholders and bailing out banks has prompted a "Never Again " chorus (Herbamas, 2012). Several countries have since called for a review of bank supervision and regulation within the European Union. The new policies primarily concern bank liquidity, capital, and corporate structure. This paper discusses these measures while considering the imperative necessity to preserve the economic functions executed by banking and supervisory structures. It also evaluates whether the banking and supervisory structures at European Union prove to be adequate in responding to the debt crisis. In order to respond to the debt crisis, European Un

The New Deal and Financial Relief

The purpose of the New Deal was to provide relief (providing jobs for the unemployed and to protect farms from foreclosure), recovery (to get the economy back into high gear), and reform (to regulate banks, to abolish child labour and to conserve farm lands), and overall to save capitalism and bring back faith in the American economy. The New Deal was successful in meeting its aims of recovery, managing to aid the economy in its growth. For example, the dams built by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), a policy implemented as part of the New Deal in 1933, provided a hydroelectric power plant which generated cheaper electricity as compared to the state electricity (by the end of 1940 the 21 dams were producing 3.2 billion kilowatts of electricity each year) through hydroelectric energy, which was beneficial to all electricity-related industries due to its low pricing. With the low electrical cost, these companies could cut their production costs needed for manufacturing, allowing th

Tribes - Study of an Online Community

"Tribes" is an online multiplayer game where different missions, worlds, weapons, and players are utilized to defend and destroy. Players use mouse, keypad, and voice commands to target and destroy the enemy as they sneak around trying to capture the other team's flag and return it to their own base. But it is more than just a game that these players have created with "Tribes" They have created a whole online community with an interactive website leading to discussion forums and chat rooms, where the action really takes place. Call it a behind the scenes look at "Tribes." Teams are put together, players are taught and assisted, and even more so, long-lasting friendships are made. I studied the discussion forums of Tribalwar.com and continually entered the Tribal war chat room hosted by the server irc.dynamix.com for a period of two weeks. I found an online community full of life constantly being infested with anything from small talk to serious gaming talk. In the article "Log on and
