Critique: How I Learned to Sweep The poem "How I Learned to Sweep" is written beautifully. I like the rhyme scheme and the pentameter. I think its very unique how the author, Julia Alvarez, ties together the sweeping with the broom and the sweeping of the weeds from a helicopter dropping off troops. The lines " our soldiers were landing in their helicopters into jungles their propellers swept like weeds seen underwater- gives you a beautiful mental picture. You can actually see weeds underwater swaying and also weeds being swept down from a helicopter. Another visually strong element is this "...

Epic" is a Greek word applied to the two great narrative poems by Homer. When we apply it to other works, we imply that these other works have something important in common with the Homeric epics. In the case of Gilgamesh, the ... common elements are a strong central hero and a central concern with the relationship between human beings and death, the gods, and fate. Like Homer's poems, Gilgamesh also seems to be a central document of its culture. Unlike Homer's epics, Gilgamesh is a somewhat disconnected story: a collection of episodes in the career of the hero, rather than a single ... ...

The theme in Borges" Borges and I is double personality. Throughout the work Borges seems to be describing himself as a normal person and as his true self, the writer. He has a problem with this other man who he describes. In the end Borges lets him self-go and shows us the writer. In the beginning of the poem Borges gives us insight into what he likes then wittingly states, "the other man shows these likes" This means that he possibly sees himself as two different people that like the same things. He then says "but in a showy way that turns them into stagy mannerisms" that is implying that he...

Disco Crowd I would have belonged to the "disco crowd", because the rhythm is energizing and simply ear friendly. The environment in which disco is played is unreal with its disco balls and lights like an outer space feeling. Disco has a magical way to make you feel good about yourself. It can make you feel sexy, when wearing those totally sparkly and flashy colors with ridiculous high boots that adds a little color to life; the kind of clothes and free attitude that I don't wear in my everyday life. Disco is easy to listen to. It is not a music that makes you reflect on life's struggles or th...

The Pine Barrens John Mcphee's "The Pine Barrens" is a unique descriptive novel, the novel deals with nature and all it's beauty. The story is easy to follow and easy to understand because it is being told through the eyes of a non-partial naturist. The novel was intriguing because it was so relatable to Philadelphia, the fact that the actually Pine Barrens are only about fifty miles away meant that whatever Mcphee experienced throughout the book was not far fetched form what I"d experience. The proximity on which Mcphee relates the Barrens to New York City meant that I've been past that value...

John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is filled with intense imagery from many sources. The characters and setting don't seem to be part of a story.
