... flight ninety-three which was seemingly headed for the Pentagon, were everyday men with a certain spark within them. These four individuals were apparently ordinary citizens who lived life just as you or I do. However, the background of these men seems to be a textbook hero story. All four men were athletes in high school or college ranging from a national collegiate rugby player ... never experienced any acts such as these. I do not believe it is common for ordinary people to have a certain spark about them to commit acts of goodness. I believe people rely on others to step in and take...

Second example of corruption in Hamlet is the environment he is surrounded by. Claudius killed the King, which was his own brother. The ghost appeared later to his son, Hamlet, and tells him "Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder (1,v)". This is referring to Claudius, because Horatio told Hamlet that he knew it was Claudius reason ... . Hamlet was talking to his mother and replied when he asked her if he had forgotten about her, "No, by the rood, no so: You are the queen, your husband's brother's wife; And,-would it were not so!-you are my mother (3, iv)". Lastly, corruption is shown thr...

The story of Cio-cio-san, the eternally faithful heroine, is one of the most wrenching (and well-known) in all of opera. A young geisha is so blinded by hope for a better life that she does not see the truth about the man she loves until it is too late. But look deeper, there is more to this story than we often see. The culture conflict between the East and West is just beneath the surface. In 1900, Japan was discovering the West, both the arrogance and the promise, for the first time. During that time, hundreds of Japanese women married American servicemen and immigrated to America. Countless...

Critique: How I Learned to Sweep The poem "How I Learned to Sweep" is written beautifully. I like the rhyme scheme and the pentameter. I think its very unique how the author, Julia Alvarez, ties together the sweeping with the broom and the sweeping of the weeds from a helicopter dropping off troops. The lines " our soldiers were landing in their helicopters into jungles their propellers swept like weeds seen underwater- gives you a beautiful mental picture. You can actually see weeds underwater swaying and also weeds being swept down from a helicopter. Another visually strong element is this "...

"In the higher world form of good appears last of all, and is seen only with effort." -Plato I think that this summarizes a part of life that at least I couldn't summarize in only one sentence. What Plato is describing is how if you work hard, put in lots of effort, you will see results. Goodness only comes when a person wants to see it, and doesn't take advantage of it. When a person works really hard toward something in particular, and is dedicated to it, they will get what they were working for. Plato realizes that this method of getting what you want is possible, depending on the size of t...

Granted I have been granted a life. A life guaranteed to be fulfilled with love, praise and perpetual freedom. Life has its faults, altercations and unfairness, But learning from the pain, the misery and the dereliction; It gives us strength to forestall from future problems that may surpass us during our frantic frenzy of an illusion. Fretful we may become, waiting on the dreams that we've longed for and the image our loved ones once wanted. Futile we may be, due to the fact that others are jealous of our accomplishments and refuse to see us in such a fortuitous state. Friendly we have to be,...

Stress is a huge problem for me in my time of life. Stress occurs when we adapt or adjust to the environment, mentally or physically. Every day there's something new that's stressful. My car will break, tests coming up, all at once of course. All of a sudden they"ll be a problem between me and one of my girl friends. How difficult the bad habit is to break depends on what it is, for example, it is a lot easier to quit biting your fingernails then to quit smoking cigarettes. The technique I will explain works well with smaller bad habits such as biting your fingernails, or cracking your knuckles. First, you must realize that you have a problem with your bad habit. Biting your fingernails for example, some people do this when they"re nervous. The best way to stop is to think about not doing it. When you catch you...
