Imperialism in the World Today


            Imperialism That one word has caused chaos on this planet that is earth. It is in the human nature to support and act on imperialism. Webster's dictionary defines imperialism as, "Im*pe"ri*al*ism, n. The policy, practice, or advocacy of seeking, or acquiescing in, the extension of the control, dominion, or empire of a nation, as by the acquirement of new, esp. distant, territory or dependencies, or by the closer union of parts more or less independent of each other for operations of war, copyright, internal commerce, etc." This definition of imperialism is a bit confusing. Basically, imperialism is the taking over of other countries or territories that one desires through the use of force. There have been numerous examples of imperialism throughout the world's existence. But, not all imperialism has to do with countries.
             The most basic form of imperialism takes place in our own backyards and bedrooms. If a child has something that another child desires, the second may try and take said object by the use of force. This is as simple as imperialism can get. Someone taking something else from someone to further enhance their happiness. .
             This also happens on the corporate level. Rockefeller was the largest oil tycoon in the late 1800's. He had a monopoly over all oil consumption and sales. If there was somewhere that had a small, family owned, or even a chain gas station, he would move in, and drive them out of business. That's imperialism mixed with competition. .
             Even before Rockefeller was the oil king, and decided to monopolize the oil market, Britain was imperializing the world. In the 1700's, Britain was starting colonies .

             around the world to expand it's Empire. That's where the 13 original colonies of the United States come from. The people who traveled here from Britain and all over Europe to start colonies had to rid themselves of the Native Americans that lived here before the Europeans even knew that there was another continent.
