This will only benefit the student in preparing for continuing education, or successful integration into our society.
As I see it, a math teacher has one major dilemma. Adolescent's live for the present, mostly aiming to survive through to the end of the day. The high school student perceives mathematics as concepts that are utilized far in the distant future, whether in college, or in a future occupation. I believe that this dilemma leads to increased apathy in the classroom. If I notice indifference taking hold of the student, I will use my best judgment to relate my material to that student. I will try to develop a connection with the apathetic student to eventually build validation, recognition and status. I will explain to the students that improving math skills is a form of exercising the brain, and therefore, increasing the general intellect of the student. The benefit to the student is a broader knowledge base, which leads to popularity and greater job opportunities. I must keep the students aware of the boundaries that I set, by continually reinforcing and "shaping" the acceptable classroom behavior that is conducive to learning. .
Classroom Management Plan.
The classroom management plan is crucial, and in support of this, I will find clever ways to spark their imagination while paying special attention to the varying abilities of the students. .
I will encourage interaction between student and teacher, therefore, my desks will be arranged in the traditional manner in rows to maximize the number of students in the room and maintain order. I must have full view of everything that goes on, in and around the room. A courteous and challenging engagement between student and teacher is the main focus of this classroom set-up. Having studied the negative effects of punishment, I will be swift at reinforcing orderliness in order to strengthen behavior. To assist in a positive first impression, I will encourage open questioning of material that is not fully grasped by the student.
