The Joad Family in The Grapes of Wrath

Throughout history, humans have achieved amazing things when they work together. However, humanities history is also plagued with dark and dubious times filled with conflict. T.H White once said, "The destiny of man is to unite, not to divide. If you keep on dividing you end up as a collection of monkeys throwing nuts at each other out of separate trees." In this book, The Grapes of Wrath, there are many examples of people uniting, dividing and engaging in conflict. In the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, one can observe that the Joad family begins to divide and unravel as a family upon their epic journey. One of the first signs of this family separation becomes apparent after the death of Grandpa Joad. Near the beginning of the family's journey to California, after they meet Ivy and Sairy Wilson and shortly after Grandpa Joad dies, Ruthie solemnly says, "Grandpa's down under there" (Page 185). In this quote, Ruthie is looking down at a heap of dirt where Tom and Al ju

Children and the Invasive Influence of Television

Diana M. Zuckerman and Barry S. Zuckerman states that: children who watch more violence have more aggression (41). Although television is very popular among countries, there should still be time limits. Some people may ask if television is harmful to children. To some it may, but there are also shows that educate and teach lessons to not only children but adults as well. Watching television too much can show many actions from children. Many shows are there to improve children learning skills. For example, Sesame Street teaches children how to read and write. Today there are tremendous amount of shows like this that have intentions to help younger adults to stay focused. Starting children to watch positive shows at a young age, can lead to having higher grades in school than those who only watched shows for fun. Some shows may become boring to children as they get older, but they will always remember certain things that was watched when they were younger. Parents and children can make watching television an activity (44). Examples are talking about the difference between real and stories that are made up (59). Hero characters that are advertised on television ca

Major and Minor Characters in Crime and Punishment

In Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoevsky, there is a wide array of characters ranging from major and very important to the plot to minor and has almost no importance to the story. For example, some could argue Alyona Ivanovna, the pawnbroker, as either a major or minor character. Some would say that she is a major character because of the fact her murder was basis of the entire novel and what ultimately lead to Raskolnikov's demise. The novel was affected by Alyona Ivanovna because she helped test Raskolnikov's theory, showed duality in Raskolnikov, and exposed the mindset of an impoverished person. The first way the novel was affected by the pawnbroker was because the murder gave Raskolnikov a chance to test his theory. The Extraordinary Man Theory was Raskolnikov's theory. This theory states that there are two different kinds of people: ordinary and extraordinary. The theory states that ordinary men live in submission and can not go above the law. The theory also states that

Reflection Essay - Improving My Writing Skills

I am constantly trying to improve myself. I strive for better vocabulary, diction and sentence structure with each piece I craft. It takes precise skill and a mature writing style to create a truly exceptional piece of writing, the skill I desire to obtain. In review of the first grading period as an AP Language and Composition student, I would reward my efforts with the grade of B. When it comes to the process and time spent pondering the score I feel I have received, CEP's, ICE's and my Personal Narrative all come into play. In the dissection of each In Class Essay (ICE) I have written, I can see evident growth and retrogression. After reviewing the 2008 prompt (ICE #1) it wasn't challenging to spot the weaknesses in my writing, my structure and diction was lacking, along with the textual evidence needed to support a claim. In the 2006 prompt (ICE #2), though the score remained the same, the way in which I constructed my paragraphs and thesis

Critical Political Thinking - Russia and the Ukrainian Crisis

Personal opinion is the heart of the democratic set up. Personal opinion shapes the public opinion and the public opinion in turn influences the political outlook of the country. The opinion should be critically and politically sound. This is a political model in which the political events shape the public opinion in a critical manner. The Ukrainian crisis didn't start in the last couple of years. It was a former USSR member and after the disintegration of the Union, it became independent from parent Russia. The successive governments in Ukraine remained heavily influenced from its eastern super power. The presence of ethnic Russians and die hard pro-Russian supporters in the Crimean Peninsula and Eastern part of Ukraine including the major industrial city of Donetsk had always contributed towards the inclination of successive governments towards mainland Russia. But the western part of Ukraine including the capital Kiev had seen growing resentment towards the pro-Russian policies and

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Trace the psychological progress of Raskolnikov's mind from the planning stages of the murder through the final realization of love. Raskolnikov fights a constant battle with himself in the beginning of the novel, debating on killing the old lady for her possessions. Eventually, after deciding to undergo his original plan to murder, Raskolnikov's mind faces a series of stages in progression from the murder to his realization of love. Essentially, Raskolnikov puts his life of solitude upon himself; he has instilled the idea that he is above others and the law. Raskolnikov commits the murder for one main reason: to affirm his idea that he is greater than others, the laws, and life itself. Afterward, he denies himself the notion that he is guilty because of his need to feel superiority. Raskolnikov's insanity and apprehension only perpetuates as the story continues as he debates confession as much as he debated the murder itself. At the end of the story, Raskolnikov confesses for the mu

Money and Happiness

Question It is said that money is the most important thing in life. How far is this true? Response There is a common saying that 'money is the root of all evils' and because of this , most people often associate the love of money with negative characteristics like greed and corruption. In this industrialized and materialistic world, however, it would be naive to believe that money is unnecessary and unimportant. Especially in these tough economic times, money is important to everyone due to rising costs and unemployment. Besides money, however other things like health and happiness are also important in life. As such, although money is important to all of us, it is not the most important thing in life. Despite the fact that many people criticize money as evil, it is the

Medical Research and HIV

According to the report from World Health Organization, 35.3 million people in the world are currently infected with HIV and 7.6 million of people died of cancer because of the incurable diseases regarding to the immaturity of the medical technology. Because of the crucial importance of medical science contributes to the wellbeing of society, even a tiny error in it will be dreadful to the whole society. But unfortunately, as being reported from the article Lies, Damned Lies, and Medical Science, that indeed the majority of medical research, which up to 90% of the published works, are incorrect in terms of misleading, exaggerated and flat-out-wrong. This article is written by David H. Freedman as a summarization of Dr. Ioannidis' researches. In this article, it contains arguments through areas of knowledges of mathematics, which includes statistics needed when collecting data for his researches and retesting the incorrect researches he collected. It also contains natural sciences which

Birth Order as an Ideological Construct

Adler's birth order theory is very practical and useful. Alfred "Adler believed that parents' responses to their children were affected by the order of each child's birth into the family" "(Birth Order 2003). The difference in treatment is said to influence the child's developing personality. Children tend to behave differently based off of where they are at in the birth order. This is a very useful theory because it can help assess the personality and behaves of that child. It can always help with understand why they act a certain way and how to deal with it. I have noticed this within my own family and my friend's families. I know many families with one child, and families with five boys, and families that have two girls and three boys. Parenting plays a huge roll in how the children behave. According to Adler, the only child is considered to be very spoiled and retains 200% of the attention from both parents. The oldest child is said to have very high expectations set upon them because they are expected to set an example for the younger siblings. The second

The Brilliant Mind of Clive Staples Lewis (C.S. Lewis)

Clive Staples Lewis was one of the most influential Christian writers of the 20th century. He was known for his popular children's books, fantasies, and theological books. Owen Barfield, one of Lewis' good friends, classified his life in three categories. He was a distinguished literary scholar and critic at Oxford, and an excellent children's writer and science fiction author, and writer for Christian apologetics. Knowing Lewis in one of these roles easily could have meant not knowing his other two roles existed because of his excellence in what he did, Barfield said.2 He wrote more than 30 books that reached many people, touching their lives in a way that continues to this day. Lewis was born in Ireland. He had one brother. At 9 his mother died from cancer.1 His mother's death encouraged his excellence in scholastics and early story writing.2 Early in life he claimed the nickname Jack. Interestingly enough, the influential Christian writer Lewis, at age 15 became an atheist, and completel

The Curious Concept of an Omniscient God

In an increasingly secular society it is becoming more common to question the conceptions of God that are created through the Bible. One such conception of God in the Bible is that God is omniscient. In Latin, we can break up the word into 'omni + scire,' which means 'one + to know,' or one who knows all. So, the definition of omniscient could be: all-knowing. We see examples of the belief of God as omniscient in both the old and new testament. According to the old testament in the bible: "His understanding has no limit."[Psalm 147:5] Also, in the gospel of John in the new testament, it states that: "He [God] knows everything."[John 3:20] One can interpret the Bible in different manners, whether literally or metaphorically, however for this essay I will be using clear and distinct quotations from the Bible so as not to arouse confusion. In these former quotes it is clear that they mean: God is omniscient. Although some may try to claim otherwise, for the purpose of this essay we will

Going Down the Drain - The American Dream

According to the Declaration of Independence, "all men are created equal, they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."" Unfortunately, some people aren't granted those rights because of immigration. Latino immigration has become one of the government's major concerns. They've tried to control it by implementing a series of laws to criminalize the immigrant's presence and deport undocumented (and at times, documented) immigrants already in the country. The measure that has been the most controversial is Arizona's Law SB 1070. While the law is said to decrease crimes, drug issues, and overpopulation, this law must be changed because the steps the government is taking are brutal, unfair, and many Hispanics are affected by it. By punishing employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants, can reduce the flood of illegal immigrants who come to the country to find work, and therefore prevent unnecessary pu

Gun Control - The Opposing Sides

The biggest issue in the government right now is the issue of gun control. What is it? Gun control are laws set in place, put there by the government in order to help limit the usage of guns in the United States. The goal is to help limit crime and violence but in essence does nothing but restrict Americans from their natural-born rights as the right-winged conservatives would say. Gun control should not be implemented because guns provide a sense of security, help lower crime rate, and the second amendment states that the right to bear arms should not be infringed. First, gun control should not be implemented because the second amendment states, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed, "(Bill of Rights 2). America's founding fathers made this an amendment to protect the citizens from all enemies foreign and domestic. If this right were not set in place there would not even be an

Character Analysis - The Works of Lysley Tennorio

In Lysley Tenorio's collection of short stories, Monstress, characters in each story suffer from their lives, yet they find the motivation to hope and chase their dreams. Most of them are Filipino-American immigrants who are seeking the American Dream with their fantasy inference. Most immigrants are influenced by a fantasy, the life that they believe America has offered. Their dreams of a fantasy world are a way to comfort and escape their unpleasant pasts, but they lead them to chase unreal desires. In particular, this is true of Felix Starro in "Felix Starro" and Isa in "L'amour, CA" who have come to America hoping to obtain freedom. Since both have been struggling with their lives in the Philippines, they are motivated by the fantasy of America. Throughout their stories, they emphasize the process of transforming their personal life and making the decision to pursue American freedom. However, they both realize the huge sacrifice they have to pay in order to achieve freedom. In both

Management - Planning, Conflict and Bargaining Power

Talking Point I. Planning A mentor once told me that "a good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow". While reading this week's chapter, I kept that phrase in mind and realized that he was pretty accurate. Chapter 5 describes the benefits of good planning. It also explains the pitfalls and how planning is not a solution for all organizational problems. I was very interested in learning about how Nike was able to meet their 5 year (40% growth) objective by developing a good retail and apparel business plan. I can appreciate how choosing an effective strategy can enable you to achieve a goal since I think of myself as a good planner. Williams describes several benefits to planning, however I believe that persistence is the greatest one. Planning encourages persistence regardless of odds, talent, education and lack of resources. Persistence alone can help you stay in a course of action in spite of struggle or resistance. In the past, I have found myself managing diffi

Clashing Social Classes and Environments in Oliver Twist

Throughout the novel Oliver Twist there is a great discrepancy existing between the lower and upper class of society. From the onset of the novel it is clear that the upper class believe they are superior. They decree justice for the lower class but they treat them as mere criminals and petty thieves. Such actions demonstrate the clear hypocrisy of the upper class's actions. The first chapter of the novel details Oliver's birth and the tragic death of his mother while giving birth to him. Because his mother did not have a wedding ring on, it is inferred by the doctor that she was not married; this does not surprise him due to the fact that many poor people are not married. The middle class edicts what is moral and proper in society, and they establish houses and workhouses to aid the poor. However, this philanthropic and "moral " tactic is severely corrupted. No decisions are presented to the lower class when it comes to their well-being. For example, when Oliver is sent to a "baby

Education, Technology and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)

The effect of MOOCs on education is in disagreement amongst well known education writers of today. There are some educators that usher in new technology advances affecting education such as Thomas Friedman. Other education writers such as Neil Postman hold onto a more traditional view of how technology should affect education. Neil Postman and Thomas Friedman will serve as great examples of how education writers strongly differ on the benefits of technology in education and MOOCs. Neil Postman and Thomas Friedman would never find common ground regarding MOOCs. Neil Postman stands as a traditionalist when viewing technologies effect on educational methods and proce

Concepts of Tragedy in Great Works of Literature

Tragedy is one thing in life that everyone fears. This is what has made it such a popular literary device for writers for centuries and has made it interesting for audiences and readers. In order to understand what is meant by a tragedy, it is important to examine the differences between classical Greek and modern English examples. The two examples that are reflected on are Sophocles' Oedipus the King and E. Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. The characters of each are starkly different, but suffer similar sorrowful fates. What exactly is a tragedy? A tragedy describes a series of misfortunes in the lives of the main character(s) that bring to them to ruin as a consequence of a tragic flaw, a weakness of character or opposing circumstances. The thing that distinguishes tragedy from the other dramatic forms is the feelings of pity and fear that grief and sorrow arouses and the eradication of those feelings. The tragic character or the audience must come to some revelations of f

Research Proposal - Government Corruption

Democracy is a government system where all the citizens of a country have an equal say in government decisions that affects their lives. It supports their freedoms, rights and the ability for a person to have political willpower. Although democracy has either one person or small group of people leading everything, it differs from the political system of monarchy or dictatorship in that the people can control their leader. There are better ways to have an incompetent leader removed from the government without revolution or violence. Political corruption occurs when government officials abuse their power for personal gain or interest. When a country's leader becomes corrupt, he or she not only brings harm to him or herself, the people, but also to other neighboring countries and allies as well. Depending on the type of government system, political corruption and the effect of the scandal, this issue can create huge problems in other countries and people that are affected by the country

The Experiences of Two Soldiers

In war, soldiers tend to have different opinions on how the war affects them. There are a few things that they share as well as defer especially coming from different time periods of war. One thing that they share as well as differ in is how a soldier pays the price psychologically for killing another human being. Another similarity as well as difference with soldiers is how war explain home for those who fought as well as what do soldiers sacrifice in the name of an abstract entity such as "the nation " with in which they identify. By observing Paul Baumer from the book "All Quiet on the Western Front " participating in World War I and Ron Kovic from the film "Born on the Fourth of July " fighting in the Vietnam War, the differences and similarities will be explained. The prices that soldiers pay psychologically for being in a war which causes them to kill another human being are greatly expressed mentally as well as physically. There are certain factors that soldiers go through to

Shakespeare's Introduction to Richard III

Richard is in every way the most dominant character of the play that bears his name, to the extent that he is both the protagonist of the story and its major villain. Richard III is an intense exploration of the psychology of evil, and that exploration is centred on and in Richard's mind. Richard seems like a one-sided embodiment of evil. However, Richard proves to be highly manipulative and highly complicated "making his heinous acts all the more chilling. One of the first impressions of Richard that we have is his jealousy for his brother, King Edward IV. When Richard speaks about his brother "[capering] nimbly in a lady's chamber " and that he is not "shaped for sportive tricks " it suggests that he is constantly comparing his deformed body to his brother who is handsome, so is lucky enough to lure a woman into his bedchamber (even though he has got a wife). Richard is making the audience feel sympathy through this part of his speech because we understand his grief and pain fo

"My Papa's Waltz by Theodore Roethke

In the poem "My Papa's Waltz," by Theodore Roethke, the speaker is talking about childhood experience that involved his father. After reading the poem, some people may think that it is nothing but child abuse going on while on the other hand ,other may people think that it is just a playful, loving relationship between a son and father. I believe that it is a case of a good relationship between a father and son because of the language and imagery that is depicted throughout the poem. The reason why I believe that this is nothing but a playful relationship between the father and son is for example when Roethke says "My mother's countenance / Could not unfrown itself "(1l. 7-8) it basically means that if child was actually ge

Globalization and Development

During the 1990s, literature on the international political economy was dominated by the idea of globalization. Dramatic decreases in transport costs and the rise of fast and cheap telecommunications technology have made geography less relevant and facilitated massive increases in global trade and new forms of multinational production. Whether or not such developments are good or bad is a topic of ongoing political debate. Some argue that an expanding global economy provides new opportunities for the developing world to integrate into global markets and to achieve rapid rises in living standards "pointing" to ongoing global growth and a reduction in absolute poverty. Others argue that the expanding global economy has instead increased global exploitation and inequalities, and further marginalized the developing world. International politics has played a key role in converting new technological opportunities such as travel and communications (globalization in a narrow sense), into

Exploring the Conflicts in Romeo and juliet

In 'Romeo and Juliet' William Shakespeare writes about different types of conflict, and how the conflict affects those around it. Conflict is one of the main themes, throughout the play, and its presence is certainly felt in Act 3 Scene 1. This scene is a prime example of how playful banter, can turn to verbal warfare, which can turn to physical conflict, all in a matter of seconds. It is a mere twelve lines after Tybalt returns furiously, that he falls, after fighting with Romeo, to his death. What Shakespeare is trying to show is how easy it is to manipulate someone. All you have to do is use the right words. It is Mercutio's use of insults like 'rat-catcher' that really annoy Tybalt, and make him want to get out his sword. In this play Shakespeare shows how easily conflict can occur. He shows us this by creating conflict between family members from the same house. At the very start of Act 3 Scene 1 Benvolio and Mercutio are having a difference of opinion. These two are very good fr
