Cell Phones - To Ring or Not to Ring?

Imagine being in a classroom and a phone is constantly vibrating or going off. Annoying right? People argue that having a phone out in a classroom is a huge distraction and should not be allowed. While others argue that cellphones should be allowed and they're not a distraction whatsoever. Publicly ,people could do whatever they desire with their phones but a classroom isn't the time nor place for it. Perhaps in special situations, they should be prohibited. Outside of the classroom, cell phones are perfectly fine but within a classroom, they should not be permitted. Rules cannot be guaranteed to be followed by students due to the fact that some teachers allow their students to use their cellular devices so much that students think it's okay to use them whenever they feel like it. Cell phone use in the class varies depending on the teacher, the class and what you're doing in that particular class. Although, cell phone use should be limited to a minimum regardless of the class. Short Story - Safe Heaven

The morning I woke up knowing that I was dreaming, I convinced myself to write about Safe Heaven, the place I can't forget. I convinced myself to describe it before I could no longer remember its beauty and peacefulness. Safe Heaven was a place full of magic, fascinating views and it was a privilege being there. It was the summer of 1983 that I got lost into the dark forest with four of my friends. I still can hear my fast and frightened breathing and feel my heart pumping in my head as I ran along the others trying to get out of the dark. Back then I was a skinny 14 years old boy wanting to have some fun. That hot summer the five of us went looking for that mystic pond in the dark forest everybody talked about but no one could ever find. Well I did, and by mistake may I say. We got lost and spent hours trying to find our way back. The sun came down so it was dark, I just could feel the trees around me and smell the dampness. I felt sick and breathless, I didn't find my voice to call f

Nietzsche's Morality - Isaiah and Jacob

In On the Genealogy of Morality, Nietzsche introduces two types of morality: "master morality " and "slave morality. " Master morality, as the term itself indicates, is the morality of the masters, nobles, and warriors who view themselves and their actions as "good. " Hence, such attributes or qualities as strength, wealth, and power are considered good. These masters perceive the "pathos of distance, " a feeling superior to those who are poor, weak, or impotent. And, the masters address such undesirable qualities as "bad. " Those opposite to the masters develop slave morality. Essentially, slave morality is ressentiment: re-valuing of what master feels and values. Slave morality originates in the weak. As the inverse of master morality, slave morality is thus characterized by pessimism; it does not seek to exert one's will by strength and defeat the masters. The core value of slave morality is utility: the good equates to what is most useful for the whole community. Using Nietzsche's

The icons, the influences these icons had on both men and women's fashion, makeup and hairstyling, social groups and social statuses, economic trends and technological advancements will be analysed from a critical viewpoint. Summary This report will focus predominantly on the internal and external forces that influenced the cosmetics and fashions in the Egyptian era and the time of Cleopatra. To support my findings I will use references from various sources, reliable online sources will include, websites, e-journals and blogs. I will also be using various extracts from books. Horus Horus was seen as one of the most important Gods in Egypt, he had a falcon head and most Kings in Egypt associated themselves with this God, the Pharaohs' were supposedly the Horus of the earth.[Egy97]. The eye of Horus was believed by the Egyptians to have magical powers to help prote

Patriotism and Sacrifice in WWII Literature

Patriotism and sacrifice are two central themes that are explored in many poems centered around World War 1. Poets explore these themes to varying effects in their poems using a myriad of techniques and poetic devices. These themes are explored in many of the poems that I have studied including; Men Who March Away by Thomas Hardy, The Volunteer by Herbert Asquith, and Peace, The Dead, and The Soldier by Rupert Brooke. As the war progressed beyond Christmas of 1914, the public opinion of the war began to change quickly. The war was more horrific then originally thought and the sacrifices made soon began to outweigh the patriotic feelings of the public. The poems I will be exploring in this essay were all written in 1914 before both the poets and the public's opinion of the war changed. This is why such large amount of patriotism and pro war messages can be seen in each of the poems. There is a certain level of parallelism between Thomas Hardy's Men Who March Away, and several of Ruper

Drug and Alcohol Fueled Violence - The Coward Punch

The "coward punch" is a strike of the fist delivering a knockout blow which can be fatal. It has left people in intensive care with severe brain damage, crippled others and taken countless lives. The government has not taken this situation lightly by enforcing new sentences for Coward Punch offences. New laws founded by statute law enforced by the government applies greater sentences, this being set forth by the New South Wales Government regarding ˜one punch' assaults, with a 20 year maximum sentence who unlawfully assaults another who died directly or indirectly as a result of the assault. If the offender is under the influence of drugs or alcohol a minimum sentence of 8 years and maximum of 25 years applies. These new laws also increase sentence time on existing maximum sentences by 2 years, these are the most serious cases with a mandatory sentence of 8 years been introduced. Voluntary intoxication has been removed as a mitigating factor when d

Sports Marketing

The National Rugby League, like other sports, is seeking to expand and/or consolidate teams in Australia and New Zealand. Consider how restructure might be pursued from the perspective of the NRL. What scenario would you put in order to expand market reach by television and to improve crowd numbers? Your task is to consider what is needed for the long-term viability of the NRL. Introduction Rugby League has been one of Australia's most popular sports since 1908. However in recent years, despite increased levels in junior participants, the overall participation, development and recognition of the sport has plateaued and stagnated for various reasons. Like other sports, Rugby League is seeking to expand and consolidate teams in Australia and New Zealand. They seek to broaden their marketing expansion tools to cover a range of media platforms in order to expand their market reach and improve crowd numbers. The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) believes this is crucial in creatin

Socrates and the Laws of the State

Assignment Questions 1. What is Socrates' conception of the relationship between the individual and the State or Laws, as shown in the Crito? 2. How is this seen in the example of his own life? 3. What inconsistencies are there with his views in the Apology, and how might these be accounted for? Response The Crito is in many ways a confusing and erratic dialogue, with Socrates and Crito at odds over what many would see to be a straightforward proposal - that Socrates should escape from prison. The potential frustration of the dialogue is heightened greatly for the reader as we see the opportunity that Socrates has been fortunate enough to receive and yet still disregard, with his execution postponed until the delayed return of the annual mission to Delos. Essentially, the Crito is a discussion of the idea of one's duty to the State. One might say that it makes for somewhat odd reading, considering that Socrates reaction to Crito's argument is perverse to that which one would beli

Creationism, Science and Pseudo-Science

To fathom the notion of creationism, one must primarily understand the concepts of science and pseudoscience. Popper defines science on the criterion of falsification and this becomes the means of distinguishing what is considered science (disprovable) and what is pseudoscience (cannot be disproved) (Popper 1963, p.160). Philosophically, the notion of pseudoscience encompasses all that is not science philosophy, religion and other bodies of human belief (Ruse Summer1982, p.72). Is creationism hence, science or pseudoscience? Creationism is simply the belief that the universe was created by the acts of a supernatural power. (Beckwith 2003, p.460). Thus it becomes blatantly obvious that the conventional assumption among society is that creationism is not a science, as it is impossible to test and prove whether the divine power is true or not, it is simply a belief that individuals adhere to. This essay will correspond to the arguments of Ruse, Laudan and Gilkey raised about the Arkansas

Goals of Financial Management

"The goal of financial management is to take actions which maximize the value of a firm's stock.  Those actions will eventually appear in the firm's financial statement, so a general understanding of financial statements is very important for the manager." Given the recent failure of many financial institutions, do you believe business leaders really understand and use all of the concepts and principles we teach in accounting, finance, and economics?  In addition, do you believe financial managers are truly concerned about maximizing the value of a firm's stock?  Why or why not? No, I don't think that most non accounting managers understand and use many much less all of the concepts and principles that is taught in accounting, finance or economics. I do however believe that this fundamental understand, at least from a theoretical perspective is very important. Understanding at least the concepts and theories of accounting can help the non accountant to maximize the utility for which financial information will to help decision makers make more informed decisions in other

Celebrities, Politicians and Realms of Influence

Topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Celebrities have more influence on people's life than politicians? In our modern society, celebrities and politicians are two groups of people who have massive impact on our daily lives. Some people are of the opinion that politicians have greater power, as they can obligate people to obey the law. Nevertheless, I think that nowadays people's life is more influenced by celebrities. First of all, celebrities appear on the media very frequently. They are always the first target of the paparazzi, so we can constantly know what is happening with them, like what they are wearing, where they are going or what they are interested in. In addition, in this technological era, we have easier access to

Ghan and the Athenian Democracy

With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the concomitant demise of communism in the twentieth century which shed abroad a spirit of triumphalism through the West, came the euphoric impression that, "history had finally ended with the universal victory of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government". Put differently, Chandran Kukathas claims, "we live in an age of democracy fetishism" and "global political phenomenon of 'democratization." That is, Democracy was hailed as the best form of government hence, an increasing process of democratization in many parts of the world especially in Africa; Army Generals traded their military fatigues for suits to contest elections as politicians in an unprecedented era of democracy. The word democracy was coined from the Greek words demos, "the people," and kratia, "to rule." In theory, this was rule by the people for the people as opposed to rule by one (autocracy) or a

Levels of Analysis and Media Influenced Aggression

Introduction The 'levels of analysis' is a three part framework used in psychology to study and examine behaviour, relating to factors at biological, psychological, and environmental or social levels. It is used to integrate the different perspectives of human behaviour, while demonstrating a more accurate and satisfactory understanding of human behaviour. The analysis of the three levels of behaviour allows us to study behaviour that is influenced biologically in terms of the brain, hormones and genetic factors. It also explores the psychological perspective of human behaviour, such as how personality traits, memory and planning can influence one's behaviour, as well as environmental influence, by studying how the physical and social environment shapes behaviour. Through the use of the 'levels of analysis' framework, this literature report will analyse the effects of media violence on aggression, to help us to understand the specific factors that may influence aggressive b

Concepts of Honor in Othello and Much Ado About Nothing

In an Elizabethan context, the word "honour" means something very different for men and women. For men, there was a conventional "code of honour". This included honesty, reputation, heroism in battle, social status, and male camaraderie. However, this was a vague concept so it can be difficult to distinguish if a man was acting honourably or not, especially from a modern perspective. For a woman, however, her honour simply meant her chastity and devotion to her husband. There is a gender divide in both plays Othello and Much Ado About Nothing, and this may be due to the dual meaning of honour. Both plays Othello and Much Ado About Nothing start with talk of war. In Othello, a tragedy, they are on the brink of a war, and therefore there is a sense of urgency and anticipation from the beginning. In Much Ado, a comedy, the war is over and the soldiers are returned having honoured their country and not lost many men ("of name", at least, i.e. no one of a high

Analysis of A Clockwork Orange

Classical conditioning is a kind of learning that occurs when a conditioned stimulus (CS) is paired with an unconditioned stimulus (US). Operant conditioning (or instrumental conditioning) is a type of learning in which an individual's behavior is modified by its antecedents and consequences. Aversive Conditioning is the use of something unpleasant, or a punishment, to stop an unwanted behavior. Along with these three types of conditioning there are neutral operants, punishers, and reinforces. All elements of conditioning were used in the motion picture entitled "A Clockwork Orange." In the introduction of the film they use a set of operant conditioning which include sexual content and violence. Alex and his friends sexually harass a women on stage. There is no punishment to this type of behavior so they harass yet another woman in her home. Because there is no punishment to this particular act of violence the behavior is repeated. After getting away with these crimes on several

Exploring Judgment: Martin Luther's Peak in the 95 Theses

Thoroughly reading our class text and information given by Mr. David Lacey, the "right " idea behind one's background and lifestyle are hard to comprehend without first understanding who they really. In class, Mr. Lacey, spoke about life from an individual scholar to the year becoming virtuous. The certainty of oneself or the certainty of another can be defined only as unpredictable. To be more familiar with the right of one and the right of others, let us date back in history and speak about Martin Luther's "95 Theses ", the use of marijuana as medicinal or for street. Is it wrong for Martin Luther to speak against the selling of Indulgences? Is it right for him to speak what he believes is wrong but right for others? On the other hand, is it fair that those diagnose, with some sort of illness, use marijuana? The Collapse of the Macedonian Empire

Alexander III of Macedon, better known as Alexander the Great, is often regarded as the greatest military commanders of all time. From an early, he was destined for greatness. At the age of 20, in 336, he inherited the powerful empire of Macedon from his father King Philip II, which by then controlled Greece and had already started to progress through Asia. In 334 he invaded Persia, and within a decade he had defeated the Persians, subdued Egypt, and pushed on to Iran, Afghanistan and even India. Alexander the Great conquered vast amounts of land, and controlled the largest empire the world had ever seen at the time (approximately 5.2 million square kilometres). There was no doubt he was a military genius, with the god-king able to boast the accolade of never having lost a battle in his entire military campaign. However, the legitimacy of Alexander's title of "Great " is questionable by the standards of today due to the prospect of propaganda and the influence which Alexander has exert

Lutheranism and the Teachings of Martin Luther

Lutheranism is one of the largest Protestant denominations in the world. According to the statistics offered by the Lutheran World Federation, there are close to sixty-six million Lutherans worldwide. It was founded by Martin Luther, a German monk, who observed some obvious contradictions between the Bible and the practices of the Roman Catholic Church of his time. He also was concerned with many abuses within the Catholic Church. His goal was reform of the church. He did not initially want separation from it. When it was realized that it was going to be impossible, the Lutheran movement was begun. Martin Luther was from Wittenberg, Germany. He was a monk and a professor of theology. He taught that salvation was a result of grace of God and faith in Christ. He stressed not only these concepts, but also the authority of the scripture alone. He began to teach that the rituals and works the church ordered were unnecessary and a hindrance to salvation. He rejected the concepts of the rol

Graffiti - The Art or Vandalism Perspective

In order to understand whether graffiti is an art or vandalism, it is necessary to understand the meaning of art, graffiti, and vandalism in art. The definition of art is ambiguous as it can be defined in different ways while conforming to one meaning. In sanctity, art means the application or expression of imagination and creativity that can be seen in the form of painting or figure. The produced work reveals emotional power and accepted for their beauty. Graffiti is a form of colour, shapes or words scratched or drawn on the surface of a building, desks, overpasses, moving objects, among others. Graffiti is not permitted and is regarded as illegal because it is done without permission. In most country's law, graffiti is illegal as it is believed to signal crimes, street delinquency, and careless living. An art becomes vandalism if its intention is to damage property both public and private. Debate has arisen on whether graffiti is an art or vandalism. This paper intends to review var

Reducing Added Sugars

Although Americans love sugar, to lower obesity rates the amount of added sugar in common household foods should be drastically reduced. According to Ryan Jaslow, chronic diseases contribute to thirty-five million deaths worldwide. Over the past fifty years sugar consumption has tripled. Harvard School of Public Health Researchers believe that reducing sugar in beverages would reverse the obesity epidemic. As one can see, the majority of people admit there is an obesity epidemic and something needs to be done to help reduce and control it. Many people believe they are completely capable of choosing what foods to eat without a ban or regulation set. These people are usually the ones that are uneducated about what they are consuming. According to Dr. Mercola, nine of the ten healthiest nations in the world are also the nine of the ten most obese nations. The largest most successful companies are successful because of their excellent taste. For large companies it is easier to get a bet
