Art Evaluation - The Ark by Melissa Miller

Taylor Mercer Boatright 11:15 October 6, 2014 Art Evaluation Essay Art, "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power." Between visiting the Kimbell Art Museum and the Modern Art Museum, the Modern Art had more to observe, and in my opinion was a better overall experience. The work of art I chose from the Modern Art Museum to evaluate was The Ark by Melissa Miller 1986. Miller was born in Houston, Texas in 1951 and in 1969 she attended the University of Texas in Austin. From there she attended the Museum of Fine Arts School in Houston and in 1974 the Yale summer School of Music and Art. Each piece of art is displayed on big walls and very spaced out. The Ark was hung on a long wall and the medium of this painting was oil on linen. The details created by Miller are very specific and tedious as each animal pain

Impact of the Great War on Germany

The Great War itself had detrimental effects on Germany and her people ranging from obtaining little control over hyperinflation being invaded by the French. In addition it was all down to the leaders at the time as well for the outcome, and altogether what really made Germany such a country, stripped of its back-bone after the war. One of the most significant problems of the war for Germany was the financial implications and reasons to its unfortunate history during the war. This was mainly because of a severe case of Hyperinflation (where the price increases where so dramatically out of control, that the value of inflation was meaningless). The government at the time predicted and constituted a solution to the problem and it was to simply increase the quantity of production in money printing making. However this then meant that for the people of Germany at the time, the price of money itself had gone down and it wasn't done on a single basis, as it was maintained and continued until

Underage Drinking - Who's Responsible?

Alcoholism is a disease that includes drinking alcoholic beverages at an uncontrollable level where an individual's profession, education, family relationships, or personal safety and health are seriously jeopardized. Today in the United States, a debate about serious health care issues in young adults cannot be completed without discussing underage drinking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, young adults aged 12 to 20 drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States even though drinking is illegal under the age of 21, "creating negative health, social and economic consequences for adolescents, their families, communities and the nation as a whole" (CDC; Office). The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)'s research, which mainly focuses on the prevention of drunk driving, underage drinking and alcohol abuse, advises that alcohol beverage advertising along with lack of parental guidance and peer pressure is what urges youths to drink

Capitalistic Modernism

Henry Hudson's discovery of high quality furs in New Netherlands, in the early 1600's, directly influenced merchants' ideals of capitalism in North America. Following Adrian Block's, the commander of the Tijger, disclosure of the land and the quality furs discovered, a charter was issued to merchants to begin trading, and a settlement was planned around the commerce of furs (Marsden, unit 6). The significance of this can be seen through understanding that a relationship exists between socio-economic development and bureaucratic capitalism. Essentially, this relationship is a main factor behind the powering of modernism. Modernism describes the process whereby which societies progress through time, due to increases in the complexity of technology and social organization (Streeter, 2009). Many theorists would attest that economic modernism has progressed though theses stages of development: the hunter-gatherer stage, the agricultural or agrarian stage, the feudal stage and the then th

Aboriginal Sentencing

What is your perception on an Aboriginal offender/non-offender? How does the society portray Aboriginals? How does the Criminal Justice System sentence an Aboriginal? The Criminal Code of Canada has made a lot of adjustments. Generations continue, and society changes furthermore. Sentencing has been changed beneficially over the years for Aboriginals offenders, to have a different outlook on society, and for society to have a restored outlook on Aboriginals; whether they be offenders or non-offenders. Even though there are still some major alterations to be made in the criminal justice system on behalf of the Aboriginals, Gladue has been one of those changes that could be the answer to all problems. Through the process of the courts and the Canadian Criminal Justice system it's required that the cultural considerations be a focus when sentencing offenders. Specifically in the case of Aboriginal offenders, Aboriginal peoples backgrounds such as history regarding residential schools, ch

Student Athlete Life - Negative Concepts

From being a student athlete from my 4-year duration at high school, sports have had a negative effect on my school life. The factors from sports that I've had to deal with are physical stress, mental hardships and time away from school. These factors are the things that I have noticed the most that differentiate me from non-athlete students. Playing on a high level hockey team, I am on the ice 4-5 times a week, and have off ice training 2-3 times a week. The amount of time training and practicing has a physical effect on my body. As being an elite athlete, your expected to constantly be building strength and endurance to be able to perform and succeed at your sport. This ties into my school like because after hard workouts and long games, the next day can be a struggle. It can be really hard to wake up for my morning classes because I get so tired . My legs feel like cement from the muscle fibres being all swollen and such trying to recover; so sitting down in those awful plastic c

Movie Summary - The Misfits

When The Misfits was released, in 1961, it flopped at the box office. Despite the presence of three Hollywood Stars, a Pulitzer Prize winning writer, and an Oscar winning director, the film barely broke even. Why did The Misfits fail to find its audience? In my opinion, this is due to the fact that it was not a typical Hollywood film; nor did it fit the usual roles played by the movie's stars, whom were otherwise box office gold. Marilyn Monroe was a sex symbol known for her roles as a dumb blonde in romantic comedies. And Clark Gable was known for his heroic roles as the debonair leading man. The Misfits, however, takes a darker look at life. Monroe, Gable, and Clift's characters are troubled and struggling to find their place in a changing world. Perhaps, this portrayal was too dark for an America still experiencing an illusion of optimism and overconfidence. More importantly, is it accurate to still consider The Misfits as a flop today? Although the movie did not find its audience

A Short History of Brazilian Film

Brazil is a very complex and interesting country. Not only is it, the largest nation in Latin America but in addition it is the most varied in geography, climate, population and culture (Rist 1). The people of Brazil are from many different backgrounds due to it being colonised by the Europeans and then the high number of African slaves as well as the indigenous people. Therefore, each unique aspect of these peoples' customs and practices blend together to constitute Brazil's the rich cultural diversity. Brazilians main language is Portuguese, however, since it comprises a mixture of indigenous and African words it is very different to the Portuguese spoken in Portugal. The indigenous influences are seen in the names of places and food items, the Portuguese Catholicism is still practice while the African slaves' effects are seen in the rhythmic percussion for the dances and pageants also it is seen with the ingredients of many dishes especially in North-eastern Brazil (Poelzl viii). For Captain Phillips school was "... a place to ogle gir

Spike Lee - Great American Film Maker

In the film Do The Right Thing Spike Lee exams the life in the Bedford district of Brooklyn on the hottest day of the summer. The struggle for supremacy between both race black and white in Lee's film is a battle from beginning to end. Sal mentions how long he has had his business up and running in the neighborhood. The Italian run restaurant caters to all who reside in the area. Battles of ethnic power at Sal's transpire as they do in a boxing ring, literally. Throughout the course I've ask myself the famous question 'what it means to be an American?' and after thinking about this for a while, I truly believe it means opportunity. In America people have the opportunity to do whatever they want, and in the film Do The Right Thing Spike Lee shows what it means to be an American, but he also shows why opportunity changed his view on oppression in the city of Brooklyn, New York. I also believe Spike Lee throws in a little side notes on how Americans need to be aware of the things th

Country Risk Analysis - Qatar

History Qatar was once controlled by the sheikhs of Bahrain, but in 1867, war broke out between the people and their rulers. To keep the peace in the Persian Gulf, the British appointed Muhammad ibn Thani al-Thani, head of a leading Qatari family, as the region's ruler (Infoplease, 2013). In 1893, the Ottoman Turks made a brief attack on Qatar, but the Emir successfully prevent any damage (BBC News, 2013). In 1916, the Emir agreed to allow Qatar to become a British territory. Oil was discovered in the 1940s, bringing wealth to the country. About eighty five percent of Qatar's income from exports comes from oil. Its people have one of the highest per capita incomes in the world (BBC News, 2013). In 1971, Qatar was asked to join the other emirates of the Trucial Coast to become part of the United Arab Emirates, but both Qatar and Bahrain decided against the merger and instead formed independent nations (Infoplease, 2013). Qatar allowed international forces to use the country as a base d

The Virtue Theory and the Ethical Issue of Climate Change

The ethical issue of climate change is how we should respond on a global, national, and personal level. For example, there is a rise in global temperature which can lead to the melting of polar ice caps. This will that result to a rise at sea level and it will also speed up the process of evaporation and cause more rainfall, the issue here is how can it be slowed down? A problem with using a deontological approach to climate change is that it focuses on duty and moral rules to make moral decisions. This is however difficult to apply universal laws globally to the population to decrease climate change. For example, banning cars globally to reduce co2 in the atmosphere would not be practical because many people have a NIMBY approach. A problem with using a teleological approach to climate change is that it focuses specifically on consequence, and doesn't consider the minority and therefore the poor would suffer first. 'The greatest good for the greatest number of people '.

The dominant ideology of romance films make the romantic love story or the search for strong and pure love and romance the main plot focus. Occasionally, romance lovers face obstacles such as finances, physical illness, various forms of discrimination, psychological restraints or family that threaten to break their union of love. As in all quite strong, deep, and close romantic relationships, tensions of day-to-day life, temptations (of infidelity), and differences in compatibility enter into the plots of romantic films. Romantic films often explore the essential themes of love at first sight, young with older

In Lower New York by Jerome Myers

The piece "In Lower New York" was painted by Jerome Myers an american painter born in Petersburg, Virginia and raised in Philadelphia. Jerome lived from 1867-1940. During this era he would have experienced the lows of the lows influencing his works of drawing and painting of urban slums. He also lived in these areas as a young boy and was influenced by european paintings when studying abroad. The medium was oil on canvas a very popular way to paint in this period. The size is 30"x 25". The current location is in Portland, Oregon at the Portland Art Museum (PAM). "In Lower New York" has presided in Portland Art Museum since Jerome Myers sold it. In spite of humble features such as the hanging laundry,

The Benefits of Air Conditioning

America's quality of life drastically changed 111 years ago with the invention of air conditioning and refrigeration. One might often think of air conditioners as machines that conditions (cools) the air around us. The effects of the air conditioner go far beyond simple cooling from where one might live to recent advances in technology. Refrigeration allows food to be stored for long periods of time, and with the advent of the cooled box car, raw food could be transported from state to state. Air conditioning is typically taken for granted until a system breaks down causing people to suffer, and food to spoil. The term "air conditioning" did not exist prior to 1906; before that "beat the heat" was all people wanted to do, and methods such as snow/ice storage and fans date back to ancient times. Ironically, the invention of air conditioning was intended for the benefit of paper, not for the American people. The first machine resembling a modern air conditioner was b

Zimbabwe - Colonizing and Imperialism

In 1888 an imperialist named Cecil Rhodes controlled the area of Rhodesia, which today is called Zimbabwe. Rhodesia in 1923, then became a self-governing British nation. The imperialism rule of both Rhodes and the British was detrimental to the nation of Zimbabwe social, politically, and economical. There was both positive and negatives effects, but in the end the negatives prevail over the positives. The British brought modernization to Zimbabwe, but their rule drove people out of their land, took away their rights and made them work in factories.1 They exploited the land and its natural resources affecting the economy dramatically. In the colonizing of Zimbabwe the British modernized Zimbabwe by bring technology to this undeveloped nation. They brought essentials to a civilization such as sewage systems, railroads, and mail delivery systems to Africa.2 This transformed the nation through

The Effects of Social Networking

Social networking is a revolutionary part of our society. Social Networking sites have given us many ways to connect to each other. From email to instant messaging social networking has given us and array of ways to communicate. However, the social impacts are both negative and positive. The most recognized social networking site in the last century is Facebook. It was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg as a way for college students. Facebook since then has become a phenomenon in social networking moving just from the U.S. to worldwide. A major advantage of social networking is being able to connect with others from around the world. I have family around the world and to connect with them I message them on Facebook. It makes it easier because there is no need for a calling card. Another advantage is being able to find people that have same interest as you. "Like " pages allow you to find people that have the same interest i

Carnage and Culture by Victor David Hanson

Carnage and Culture, written by Victor David Hanson, is a very informative and intellectually honest work that was capable of tackling some of the touchiest subjects regarding the history of Western warfare by professors and historical authors alike. Also taking a method which has been seen to be somewhat loathed by critics, he has made Carnage and Culture work in such a fashion that Jean Bethke Elshtain, author of Women and War wrote that, ˜ Hanson is courting controversy again with another highly readable, lucid work Together with John Keegan, he is our most interesting historian of war[Jea01].' His work is written differently in the sense that it does not inherently have any relation to the dark hearts and minds of humans and their reasons for war and battle, but rather the science of warfare, and all of the tactics and underlying explanations involving government politics and discipline in warfare. The information that Hanson has gathered and compiled delves into the deep r

How to Play the Saxophone

In order to play the Alto Saxophone, you need to go to a music store around you, and ask them for Alto Saxophone V12 3 inch reeds. After the Employee hands you the reeds, you will then need to ask for a neck strap. A neck strap is used to carry/hold the Saxophone, the Alto Saxophone weighs about 5.7 pounds; and therefore it can get very heavy and uncomfortable after awhile of playing. Once you get the neck strap you want to take the Alto Saxophone out of the case, make sure not to grab it from the bell the big circle looking thing where the sound comes out. Once you pick up the Alto Saxophone, you want to figure out where to your hands. You will grab the top of Saxophone with your left hand. On the Saxophone there will be 3 pearls where the left hand goes, we will call the top pearl number 0, then go down all the way to 4. Once you have the saxophone in your hand, you want to put your pointer finger on Pearl number 1, the one directly under the top Pearl, your middle finger is going t

Political Typology and Socialization

In a country heated by the debate of just who should be elected as our president or our government officials, tension rises among parties giving us a look into the way different parties work and how they align themselves according to different political issues. From the time we are very young we are first introduced into political ideas by the people who care for us, leading us on a journey of figuring out exactly where we lie on the line between Democrat and Republican. After taking the Pew Typology Quiz my personal typology happened to be Libertarian. Libertarians believe in balancing their conservative views with liberal ideas in social matters. They believe that each person should be responsible for their own body and what they choose to do with it as long as it is not violating others rights in the process. Libertarians believe abortion and gay marriage should be allowed while they also believe cuts in government spending would be a great motion to put forward to reduce the defi

Raising the Minimum Wage

Our country has been experiencing one of the worst recessions ever for quite a few years now. Many people are just making enough money to live on. The working class has been struggling the most because they don't have the best jobs out there and if you don't have a good job you are probably making minimum wage or something close to it. Raising minimum wage has become a political battle but President Obama has recently addressed that he is working on gradually raising it. If this plan works, not only the economy but people's lives will improve. I myself currently work for minimum wage but yet I'm waiting on my next check to be received. I feel that the federal government should see the problem and fix it. The United States fell into a recession around 2007 and even to this day, many people are still having income problems. For a long time, people were losing their jobs and it became increasingly hard to find a new one. Companies and business owners could now use this to the

Nehemiah - A Man of Great Leadership

In order to be a true leader, one must show many different traits in what they say and do. Some of these traits may include boldness, sensitivity, compassion, and encouragement. In order to be a godly leader, one must also be both strong in their faith and help strengthen the faith of others. Some of these traits may include prayer, godly concern, and regular worship. The book Nehemiah portrays the prophet Nehemiah as a very godly leader both by himself and in the company of others. As Christians, we should strive to be like Nehemiah and live our lives as Christian leaders. Nehemiah showed godly leadership through his use of prayer. When Nehemiah heard about Jerusalem's walls being broken down and its gates set afire, he prayed to God. In the middle of his morning and fasting, he went to the Lord for comfort in prayer. He prayed about how loving our God is, and how he keeps his ears op

When Adoption Isn't the Answer

To some people, abortion is something that is debatable and to others it is not. In my opinion, abortion is something that should be allowed because it can prevent physical pain, it can be as solution for those who had a baby through unconventional or non-consensual means, and it is considered a reliable practice of the medical profession. Abortion may not be the most humane alternative, but it is still a safe choice for the mother and child. Thinking about abortion itself is a tough and decisive process that requires more effort than anything else. Although abortion is a painful process, if one decides to go down this path it can be found to be very rewarding, because it can prevent physical pain of both the baby and mother. Abortion is not a clean process. There are many consequences to abortion if one decides to have one. For example, if someone had a previous abortion, then having another one can cause problems towards future conception. Also, it causes great mental pain as well. T

A Token Economy - Positive Reinforcement

When dealing with children or people who have trouble controlling their behavior it can sometimes be very difficult to sway their performance. With the Token Economy system it allows the individual to work towards a goal by positive reinforcement. The participant is given a token which is later traded in for something they are working towards. A person with a mental handicap might have an outburst and you would like them to work towards calming themselves down, instead you may want to set a goal to do something productive that day. If the outbursts continues a token is taken away, and when a goal is complete a token is added. Behaviors we would like to change for a client may include changing a negative attitude, not complying with tasks asked of them, and failure to listen when being talked to. Behavior is a fundamental way a person may act or the way they present themselves to others. Behavior is also the way a person responds to life situations and stimuli. Some people have a
