Private Prison Industry - All for Profit

"There are approximately two million inmates in state, federal and private prisons throughout the country. According to California Prison Focus, 'no other society in human history has imprisoned so many of its own citizens.'" The United States has jailed more of its citizens than any other nation. In the past 35 years the amount of inmates has grown from 300,000 to the current two million. The disastrous "War on Drugs" and rise in immigration detentions continue to aid this enlarging number. Due to this exponential growth, the state prison systems are relying more heavily on private prisons to house these criminals. Private prisons are contracted by the state government to imprison given criminals. These private penitentiaries are managed by large industries such as the Correction Corporation of America (CCA). The industry of private prisons profits billions of dollars annually and holds little to no regard for their inmates. The prison industry's sol p

Synthesis Essay - The Consequences of Cheating

Everyone at some point in their life has done it. That moment when you sneak a peek at the person's paper right next to you, so you can get a good grade. It's human nature to want to do well and succeed. People feel entitled to cheat because it's ok at that moment or it is not wrong. Who is going to care, right? As meaningless as it sounds, cheating has become rooted in our society and individuals have come to believe that it is ok and not ethically wrong, on the contrary it is fine if it will help you be successful. Though it may seem alright at the moment it something that we should all work on to eliminate by staying true to ourselves and others. Cheating is not going to get you anywhere in life, even if it helps you get that A+ or to make your life easier. A true example of cheating or lying getting you nowhere in life is using drugs to win a race or accomplish a life goal. Lance Armstrong confessed to the public through Oprah Winfrey that not only did he use EPO and blood dope throughout his career, but that it was impossible to win seven tours de France as he did, without drugs. Cheating his way through with drugs was Lance's way of winning all of those races. Armstron

What is Your Reason for Living?

Every time I come across the question "What is your reason for living", I get extremely frustrated because I don't really know what my reason for living is. It seems like only God has the answer to this but every time I am asked this question, I have 3 answers. The first answer that I have for this question is "I live for God". Most of the time that is the cop out answer. Some people find it to be a sufficient answer, the die hard christians find it to be sufficient. I don't find it to be sufficient because no matter how big of a christian you are, I think it is hard to say that you are living for someone that you have no idea what they have in store for you. It's like walking into darkness. You don't know what is in front of you but you keep walking because you hope that nothing bad is going to be in front of you, but you walk in fear. I live in fear. Fear of failure, fear of death, and fear of not succeeding.  The new generation has a burden to succeed put on them. The Americ

Women in Early America

States Rights Living in the North or the South gave exceptionally different recompenses and exposure to the political atmosphere for the women in the early republic. A women's ability to acquire an education as well as an opportunity to advance on a social, political and economic platform was dependent on where she lived, how wealthy and educated her father may have been and most importantly the color of her skin.1 The divide between customs and traditions were entrenched in the social hierarchies that persisted in the south. It is important to understand how the development of Human rights and liberties were so closely associated to the traditions and customs that persisted in the south such as race. Marylyn Salmons study of the legal status of women in the early republic reveals that the literacy skills in the south amongst women were much lower than their northern counterparts. Even then the statistic

Summary of The Jungle by Upton Sinclair

Upton Beall Sinclair, Jr. was born on September 20, 1878 and became an American author who wrote close to one hundred books in many genres. He achieved popularity in the first half of the twentieth century, acquiring particular fame for his classic muckraking novel, The Jungle that was written in 1906. Before his success at the age of fifteen, he began writing to support himself and help pay his college expenses. During his college years, Sinclair encountered socialist philosophy, the influence of which is evident in his writing throughout his life, and became an avid supporter of the Socialist Party. In 1919, he published The Brass Check, a muckraking exposé of American journalism that publicized the issue of yellow journalism and the limitations of the "free press " in the United States. Time magazine called him "a man with every gift except humor and silence." In 1943, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The intended audience for The Jungle was the general public, in an a

Short Story - Missed by Inches

The date was December 25, 2004 and I was driving home from the extended family dinner, when the unexpected happened. I was never a fan of waking up early on Christmas, mainly because I knew it was a day I had to spend with my twenty-eight cousins, in addition to all my aunts and uncles. The day started out as my mother bellowed across the house for me to get up. It was a hectic day for all of us, but I got up and walked to the living room. Under the tree awaited multiple presents, cards, and the one "box " my brother and I got every year. It's always the gift that we share. That year it happened to be a desktop computer. After, we thanked my parents and I went back to bed. Hours later, I'm re-awoken by my dad, it's that dreaded time. Every year we drive two and a half hours to spend "quality time " with the family my father says "we never see ". Funny, twenty-eight cousins means twenty-eight different birthdays. Sure dad, we never see them. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have such a large family or if we just lived closer

Triumph of Christianity in the High Middle Ages

Assignment Analyze the forces that shaped Christianity and caused it to triumph in Europe.  Be sure to include the problems that Christianity faced as well as the factors that favored it and explain how the early church evolved.  Be sure to cite specific examples. Response The triumph of Christianity began with the spread of the Christianity as the Roman State declined. As the borders of the Roman Empire collapsed Christianity was able to enter into Western culture and become the dominate religion. To better understand the factors inhibiting the growth of Christianity, the origins have to be explained. The first Christians were the Jews, and as the religion spread through Judea, soon gentiles, those who weren't born Jewish, became believers as well. The beginning had its problems too. Gentiles were seen as the lower people, or really those that weren't God's chosen people. After Christ turned Christianity into a universal religion, his apostle Paul set out on his mission to the g

Apple and Mac OS X

OS X is the newest of Apples Mac OS line of operating systems. Although, under its original name of Mac OS X, it was officially designated as simply "version 10" of the Mac OS, "version 9" had a completely different codebase as well as dramatic changes in user interface. Mac OS had been Apple's primary operating system since 1984, and the family was backward compatible, so OS X could virtualize Mac OS 9 until version 10.5. Unlike its predecessor, OS X is a Unix operating system built on technology that had been developed by NEXT through the second half of the 1980s and up until Apple purchased the company in early 1997. It was first released in 1999 as Mac OS X Server 1.0, with a desktop-oriented versi

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

A Sunday Afternoon (or Island of La Grande Jatte) by the French painter Georges Seurat is a horizontal painting in great format that measures ten point five feet in height and nineteen point 6 inches in length. There isn't a main figure in this painting, but a heap of important figures altogether in different planes in the painting. The artwork is inspired by Sunday afternoon in this famous island that was also known as "Big Bowl Island": the perfect escape spot for the bourgeois to escape from the commoners. All the figures are carefully and strategically placed throughout the painting so everything stays balanced and proportioned. We can appreciate this in the pseudo hierarchy of characters in his art; for example the boats of big size in the river that are counter-balanced by the bigger ladies' figures standing close to the edge of it, along with the weight of the background bushes. Another good example of the weight balance in this painting is in the first

The Basics of Hypnotherapy

Have you ever wondered if hypnotizing people really worked? Well, I'm about to give you some facts on how it works and what it works for. It is not something one can just go out and practice on someone. It requires knowledge of the technique. In the eighteenth century, a man named, Franz Mesmer, from Europe, was the first person who came up with an unchanging method for the use of hypnotherapy. It was said that he used "animal magnetism" in his method. He would have his patients' line up together, linking them with a rope, so that his magnetism could pass through them. During this procedure he would wear a cloak around his neck and play dark wave or gothic music on a glass harmonica. This was considered to be dangerous for anyone wanting to make this a career. Around the nineteenth century, Surgeons and physicians started using hypnotherapy in the medical fields. The ones who decided to use this therapy risked their reputation by giving it

The Red Cross and American Aid

Aid for America Blood, fatalities, tears the American Red Cross has seen it all. They are an organization centered on helping people in time of need. They take donations and put them toward helping people during rough times such as after natural disasters. In the United States, they play a huge role in the cleanup and aid after terrorist attacks, freak accidents, droughts, and even when the economy is poor and citizens are struggling. Since the American Red Cross was founded due to the necessity to have an organization that can respond quickly and efficiently, there have been many effects on our country, all good. The idea of the American Red Cross is based off of the Red Cross, which started in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1863, The Red Cross was started to provide care to the wounded and sick. Clara Barton used this basis of idea, and created a similar organization within United States borders, called the American Red Cross (Founder Clara Barton). The American Red Cross accepts don

Latin American Culture - Points of View

Latin American culture is associated with idealized gender roles for men and women, known as Machismo and Marianismo. These dictate norms and expectations for male and female members of the society respectively. Achievement of these gender roles has long influenced behavior and interactions within families and communities around Latin America. Marianismo is the female role in Latin American society coming from the beliefs of the virgin Mary. Marianismo is the idea that all women should show femininity, the traits are to be modest, pure, faithful, motherly, and eternally self giving. Women are suppose to be the ones to take care of the house by cooking, cleaning, nurturing the kids and serving the husband. Machismo is masculinity in the most extreme way. Machismo is the idea that men must be the 'macho' man. Men are suppose to be strong, dominating, aggressive and bring money home. In the three works of Child of the Dark, Adios Muchachos, and Strawberry and Chocolate, Marianismo

Hera - Headstrong Queen of Olympos

Throughout Homer's The Iliad, Hera's unwavering determination and resourcefulness from the poem's start to finish is a testament to the goddess's character. Particularly in book fourteen, Hera exemplifies her power and audacity by manipulating several gods so that her favored Achaeans can gain the upperhand in the war. The epic centers around a conflict of powerful men with an underlying theme of the helplessness of women, yet Hera transcends the gender-based limitations by exerting her powers and taking full advantage of her sexuality in order to achieve her merciless goal of trumping the Trojans. The most all-encompassing display of Hera's cunningness and competency is in her manipulation of several gods, including Zeus in book fourteen. In order to distract Zeus from seeing Poseidon's helping the Achaeans, the quick-witted Hera resorts to trickery, bribery, and seduction respectively to recruit Aphrodite and Sleep then ultimately occupy her husband, Zeus. Hera begins her mission

Jealousy and Judgement in The Crucible

The Crucible is a play about the Salem witch trials in which the author, Arthur Miller, relates himself to the protagonist, John Proctor. They are both condemned for beliefs they did not practice and the refusal to name others who did the same. The young girls in The Crucible used slander to ruin people's good name for revenge and attention. The most prominent of them was Abigail, who wanted revenge on Elizabeth Proctor, both for kicking her out and being John's wife. The Crucible is a play that accentuates the consequences caused by jealousy. Abigail Williams was a very smart young girl, but she only cared about her reputation. She worked at the house of John and Elizabeth Proctor. While she worked for them, Abigail had an affair with John Proctor. When Elizabeth found out about this, she "relieved

My Road to Literacy

"Wow Philippe! This paper you wrote is really good! You scored one of the highest grades in class!" That's what my teacher said when I was in third grade. I remember that when I was young, I used to be a great writer. From then on my papers were usually really good during all that year. My fellow classmates would always congratulate me and usually ask me for advice. I remember how it all started... Stephen King once said that; "Quiet people have the loudest minds." I believe that saying because in school, I was always shy and quiet. Even though I never really talked, I was always thinking about things. Since I didn't talk much, I found it easy to put everything on my mind into words. I did very well on my first essay because of this and from then on, I started to open up a little more in my class because I was starting to gain a little popular. I have m

Education - Boys Will Be Boys

The American educational system has become increasingly familiar with the expression "Boys will be boys" from as early as kindergarten. Many parents are aware of the differences in cognitive abilities, within an academic setting between male and female students, starting from a young age. Female students were found to be more attentive, eager to learn, and independent workers, while their male counterparts were found to be more restless and unfocused. Primary school teachers and the education system provide more focus on the female students who are more willing to learn and give them the resources necessary to succeed in academics. At the same time, these teachers are dismissing the troublesome and inattentive boys, as it may be difficult to educate those seemingly unwilling to learn. It is this attitude and decreased allocation of resources for the male students that leave them behind their female classmates, which then affect their performance in learning on through high sc

Obesity in the United States

Have you ever thought about how unhealthy our nation has become? During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States and rates remain high. More than one-third of U.S. adults (34.9%) and approximately 17% (or 12.7 million) of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years have obesity ("Overweight and Obesity "). Poor nutrition is a huge precursor to obesity. If your body isn't getting the proper nutrients that it needs, it is going to begin to slow down, making it even harder to lose weight. Poor nutrition has become an increasing problem due to the convenience of fast food restaurants. Many Americans depend on fast food on a daily basis because they feel too busy to slow down for a healthier meal. Lack of exercise is another contributing factor to the obesity epidemic. Without a balance or deficit in the number of calories consumed, and the number of calories burned, weight gain will occur. The recommended amount of exercise is only 30 minutes of ph

The Policy of Segregating Military Units

Leading up to World War II, minority Americans have had a long history facing racial discrimination in the United States, such as slavery and the Jim Crow laws against African Americans after the Civil War. When the United States entered World War II in 1941, its British Empire and Soviet Union allies were desperately holding their own against the Axis powers. At the time, the Axis powers defeated France, invaded the Soviet Union and controlled much of Europe and the Western Pacific. In order to win the war, the United States needed to fully mobilize its resources and recruit soldiers. Despite the Axis powers being on the verge of victory and the dire need for soldiers, the War Department was concerned that complete integration of soldiers would hurt the war effort because of racial issues. Instead the War Department allowed minority Americans to join the military and then segregated these soldiers into their own units to fight during World War II. Although the United States governme

Soccer - Success and Failure

In order to get to the rainbow you must be able to deal with the rain. As an athlete, you must be able to deal with both success and failure. Soccer is a sport that has taught me that nothing is guaranteed, that nothing is impossible and most importantly, that nothing comes easy. When dedicating yourself to a sport you learn that you're not only making a physical commitment but a mental commitment, it takes skill to master a sport, but it also takes heart and desire to motivate yourself through the good and bad times. The challenge of pushing away the voices that simply tell you to give up was one of the most excruciating parts I had to deal with when I was playing soccer but now looking back at these past experiences, I learned that the greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after you fall. Just one example of this was a soccer tournament I participated in when I was younger. The game was tied and we eventually went into penalty kicks. The round didn't start the

Concepts of Drama in Desiree's Baby

"Desiree's Baby," by Kate Chopin, is a story of a young woman is victim of both love, and rejection. The story beginning with an abandoned, nameless young lady, whose future was uncertain until the Valmonde family rescued her. Later on the story, Desiree marries Armand, a wealthy slave owner. The tension rises when their child was born and his skin tone seems to be darker. Armand blames the color of the child on Desiree. Armand rejects her and the child for fear that this would harm his family name. The most obvious and crystal clear theme of the story is racism. The story also centers on the presumed inferiority of women and dependence on a husband. The 19th century was an extremely difficult time for women and blacks, socially and economically speaking, because of the domination of white men. The short story is narrated by an omniscient third-person po

From Power to Peril: The Fall of Ancient Rome

In the late fourth century, the Roman Empire went from being one of the largest empires in the world, to ruin. Rome's success initially started off due to its network of overland trade routes. Initially, it established the Republic in 500 BCE which was governed by a Senate. It wouldn't have its first emperor until 27BC. Three and a half centuries later, the Roman Empire stretched to the Mediterranean Sea; and was ever expanding. Around 300 BCE, the expanding empire gained control of Italy by defeating the Samnium tribes and also gained control of the eastern Mediterranean by winning the wars against the Hellenistic kingdoms. As Rome successfully created their empire, it led to the failure of the Republic as a system of government. The Romans also had advances in technologies, creating arches, concrete, and aqueducts. The Roman state continue to prosper for two and a half centuries after Emperor Augustus's reforms. However, after the third century came along, Rome began to crumble. Man

Part of life involves overcoming obstacles. The Myth of the Latin Woman:I Just Met a Girl by Judith Ortiz Cofer and On being a Cripple by Nancy Mairs are both focused on overcoming obstacles, and while both essays express tenacity and love for books; they are also very different in the type of obstacle they face and the culture that surrounds them. Having an obstacle in life it's hard. Both characters show a great way to handle situations in which their hardship can bring them down. On "The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl ", the author describes how the character reacts when being offended by someone because of her condition. Advertising to Hungry Americans

Everyone is aware of the ongoing feud between Burger King and McDonald's. Both fast-food companies make more money a day than any of us could even imagine. But what makes them so popular? Perhaps it has to do with their marketing strategies. Both fast-food companies make excellent use of their advertisements, using color, font, and imagery to appeal to their target audiences, but which billboard is more effective? There are a lot of interesting billboards and ads for these fast-food companies, but the selections for this essay include the third billboard image from each Google Images search, to have an impartial and random sample. These images are as follows: The first one, a red McDonald's ad featuring an Egg McMuffin, employs several different strategies to convince the target audience "hungry Americans "to eat their food.
