Summary of the Affordable Care Act

Brief Summary The three authors of the present article have jointly dealt with the practice behaviors of small (solo/dual) family practice of physicians. As result of enforcement of Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010. They also carried out surveys (nationally representative data) which portrays the trend of solo/dual practices. According to the authors small private practices are facing severe competition from larger groups of physicians and hospitals. They have adverse effects from the managed health care system and are rather forced to join health care organizations in one way or the other. Information about the authors: The authors Doohee Lee, Kelly James Fiack, and Kenneth Michael Knapp are well known within the medical field. Criminal Justice and Models of Policing

A man by the name of Herman Goldstein saw a problem with where police forces had their focus on. He believed that police should worry about what they are actually sent out to do, not about small issues involving employment and organization. Seeing this as such a large problem, Goldstein began to step in, spread his knowledge and findings with people of a higher rank than him. Goldstein did this because he wanted to prove a point and put the officers focus on the greater problems at hand. In efforts to replace standard model of policing, which was the main reason as to why Goldstein decided to step in, he presented an idea that people took very well to. The idea Goldstein had was to put in effect a new method that almost forced police to be more upbeat in trying to target crimes at their roots in efforts to stop them more efficiently. He had called this scheme problem oriented policing or better known as POP. Problem oriented policing does something very unique that was never done b

Harvard Business School - Case Analysis

Decision Silvio Napoli needs to alter his 'Swatch'-adopted strategy of focusing on inflexible low-cost elevators in favor of more flexible semi-customizable elevators in order to meet the needs of the Indian market. He also needs to utilize the knowledge of his field salesmen in order to further understand the market demand for what these small customizations should be. Finally, the local manufacturing network needs to be consolidated before any orders begin. Evidence Inflexibility in Product Design Napoli's market research clearly showed a customer emphasis on 'price' and 'service' when factoring in a purchase. His decision to opt for low-cost standardized elevators was backed by this analysis. Firstly, These elevators, the Schindler 001 design, would allow for economies of scale since it would involve mass production of every component, thereby saving costs. Secondly, the simplicity in a uniform design would allow for cheaper maintenance. Lastly, it would decrease the am

Summary of the Confessions of Saint Augustines

The Confessions is a very dense and spiritual book which chronicles the life of Saint Augustine of Hippo, an exploration and study of memory and his analysis and interpretation of the book of genesis. Books one through nine chronicles his life, in which he describes episodes of his life where he can find parallels to the Old Testament and other parts of his life that exhibit god's grace. Book ten is a contemplation of memory and an analysis of himself, where he observes the wonders of the external world and relates it to an introspective study of himself. The last two books are a study of scripture where he concentrates heavily on Genesis and the methods of god's creation of the earth. While many people throughout history have written many autobiographies and biographies St. Augustine of Hippo is very selective about which narratives he includes in his book The Confessions. Saint Augustine says "I pass over many things, hastening on to those which more strongly c

Chinese and American Mothers

Raising successful children has always been a goal for most parents. Some of the responsibilities of being ideal parents are setting high standards and giving a lot of guidance for their kids. In the article "Why Chinese Mothers are Superior," Amy Chua said that it is normal for most Asian mothers to set a very high bar for their children. When Amy Chua published her article, it created a controversy. A lot of readers disagreed with her point because they believed that there was a better way to educate and shape their children. In my opinion, Chua's way of educating her children is correct to some extent. My only suggestion to Chua is that she should have let her children explore the world by giving them some freedom. Amy Chua began the article by listing the things that her children cannot do, for example: attend a sleepover, be in a school play, and many more things. She also stated a really strong and provoking argument, ". . . when Western parents think they are be

The USSR, Europe and WWII

In this assessment I will be looking at why the USSR to take control over Eastern Europe after World War Two. I will also look at how the USA responded to the actions of the USSR such as the Truman Doctrine, the Iron Curtain, Marshall Aid, the Berlin Blockade and the Berlin airlift. The USSR were very keen in taking over Eastern Europe. Truman wanted to stop the spread of communism while Stalin wanted to take control over Eastern Europe. Even before World War Two had ended USA and USSR was suspicious of each other. One reason in particular was because Truman didnt tell Stalin about the atomic bomb and that they were going to drop it on Japan. At the Potsdam conference in July 1945 Truman was suspicious of Stalin and said that he was behaving like a bully in Eastern Europe by creating a buffer state. Stalin wanted to take control over Eastern Europe and doing so he created a buffer because Russia was invaded by Germany in 1812, 1914 and 19414. Stalin was keen to make sure this didnt ha

My Experience with College Stress

As a first year student at the University of Waterloo, my time here so far has been anything but relaxing. Transitioning from secondary school to university, living away from home, and receiving great amounts of homework of even greater complexities has been extremely difficult and stressful to deal with. I have found myself constantly worrying about assignment deadlines, lack of sleep, no social life, my health, my performance in my courses in terms of my grades, and meeting my parents' expectations of succeeding in school. To date, there have only been three to four days where I have had time for myself to do activities that I enjoy, as the majority of my time has been spent studying and completing assignments. When I am under stress, my current habits involve eating poorly, as I often miss major meals to do work, and sleeping very late at night. This has been having negative impacts on my grades as I have been unable to concentrate and focus in class. I have also felt extremely

Joseph E. Stiglitz - Self-Interest and Economics

Doesn't self-interest lead to price gouging, corruption and cheating? Sometimes it does, but most often it is held in check by competition. In today's American society the discussion of self-interest and competition usually results in a discussion of the proper role of government regulation. Our economy in which we have lived had worsened year after year and probably will not improve for some time. In our society today, the 1% influence is well established in our government, their (1%) future is so very linked to the 99%, even they don't realize that improving the 99% lifestyle will benefit them in the long run. Self-interest in today's American society is how pretty much is all set-ups from government to lobbyist to political campaigns. The 1% seems to have their hand everywhere making sure they get what they want and how they want it; like putting pressure on the senate, and congress to always get very generous tax breaks, to make sure their preferred candidate has the best chance t

My Amazing Sister, Diamond

Cerebral Palsy; also known as CP, is a condition caused by injury to the parts of the brain that control our ability to use our muscles and bodies (http://www.chasa.org/). Cerebral dealing with the brain, and Palsy meaning weakness or problems with using the muscles, often the injury happens before birth, sometimes during delivery, or soon after being born. On the morning of August 27th, 1999, my mother gave birth to beautiful and seemingly healthy baby girl. At about 5 weeks into the world, my sister, Diamond, suffered a stroke in the middle of the night which would later lead to her being diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. My mother, like any mother would be, was devastated by the news. She'd had very high blood pressure and was advised to have a cesarean section instead of the normal vaginal birth, but even then my sister showed no signs of unhealthiness so you can imagine how much of a shock this news was. Of course my mother's first thought was "is there a cure for this?" a

The School Uniform Debate

Do you think certain types of clothing promote violence or gang activities? Or do different clothing distract classmates from learning in classrooms. According to an article in Current Issues: Macmillan Social Science Library "School Uniforms": "...[A] case of academic improvement following a school uniform policy is that of the Long Beach California Unified School District, one of the first districts to require student uniforms in grades K-8 in 1994.crime in the K-8 schools dropped by 22 percent, while attendance increased. This is the conflict in todays world about school uniforms. Having uniform in school can decrease distraction in the classrooms and can cut down on violence in school; on the other hand, not having a uniform, children and teens can express themselves through clothing. But can also get bullied for the clothes they wear. Some students and parents favor the idea of school uniforms, while there is an opposing side as well. This feud of students wearing their own clothes has been a problem for years. Children as well as teens are exposed to fashion trends and different types of clothing through movies, music videos, and television;

The Presence of Evil in Macbeth

Children are taught through school and religion that such acts of murder, theft, and greed are sins and acts of evil in which can send them to hell. This goes to shape peoples ideology of what is right and what is wrong which affects many decisions made in life. This same mentality effects Macbeth and in Macbeth, evil is interpreted through Macbeths actions and the seed planted by the witches. The seed of greed, lust and power is a major topic Shakespeare emphasizes by dangling the Kingship Macbeth is dreaming of. To accomplish his goal, he needs to complete evil deeds that go against his natural morals. In the play Macbeth, evil is portrayed as an outside force that corrupts and takes away Macbeths free will and causes him to be engulfed in evil, changing him from a noble man to a bloody tyrant. The witches enact as the harbinger of evil by planting the seed that eventually takes over Macbeths will. In the first few scenes of the play, Macbeth meets these three wicked sisters, who a

My Experience in Professional English

English has been one of the worlds most influential languages for at least a couple of centuries now. Ever since the glory days of the great naval British empire it has been up there and now in the age of information and technology it is perhaps used more than ever before. Certainly it hasn't slipped past me unnoticed – I too have had at least some experience using English. My future field of expertise – information technologies is one of such unique experiences for me. First of all, let me state that in my humble opinion it is quite difficult to separate different aspects and layers of language. I would rather let linguists and philologists do such a bloody dissection. To me any language is almost a living, breathing thing that has evolved naturally in hundreds and hundreds of years through mouths, minds and hearts of thousands and thousands of people. I am no different – this language came very organically to me and I have built my English skills very gradually. I

Brainwashing and Reconditioning

Our prison system is like a pot boiling over. The amount of criminals filling those walls are growing at an alarming rate. In the movie, A Clockwork Orange, the government believes they have the answer. The government feels that they can lower the number of violent people in the system and make themselves look noble at the same time. Could something like this be possible? The government believes so. In A Clockwork Orange, the government shows us how and why they believe this to be true. Their agenda behind this is to make themselves look good in the public's eye. In A Clockwork Orange, they attempt and succeed in brainwashing a violent person, Alex. Can the government control people with brainwashing or reconditioning as they would like to call it? With my research, I have found that brainwashing is plausible. All you need is a reason, a person to act upon and the techniques to brainwash a person. Not everyone can be brainwashed or reconditioned. According to Memorise.org, &

Gender and Language

"We are all the same", But is this really true? For us humans, are we really the same? In this case when we say "same", it's about the way we talk, the way we communicate, about our civility, our own life style and our emotions. We tend to look through language and not realized how much power language has. Men and women has a very different distinct way of communicating. Gender differences reflected in language shows the differences of people's cultural traditions, thinking modes and values, researches on this issue have practical significances on the construction of a harmonious, successful language communication between men and women. Different dialect and that the best way to describe communication between the genders is in a cross culture format. Its called - " Genderlect theory of Deborah Tannen" . Steps to Ending Poverty

NO! Poverty cannot be removed from the world. People refer to it as the cancer of the planet. It can be decreased or minimized but to remove it is impossible. Thankfully we have organizations like UNICEF, UN, WHO and RED CROSS who are on the frontline to ensure poverty does not create havoc in the world. Statistics have shown that nearly one billion people have been taken out of extreme poverty in the last 20 years. Poverty is a condition characterized by severe deprivation of basic human needs including food, shelter and clothing. It also takes into account other needs such as sanitation facilities, safe drinking water, education and information. Up to now an estimated 1.4billion people live in extreme poverty and 90% of them are from developing countries. Africa and Asia are where we have the greatest number of poor people. Poverty reduction has been a very long and hard battle. With time, more efficient and simple ways have come up to alleviate the impact of poverty in s

McDonald's: I'm Lovin It!

Most of us have seen the movie Supersize Me created by Morgan Spurlock. In this video he tries to prove that McDonalds is a terrible place because they are "making America obese ". However I do not agree with this movie, I believe that only lack of self-responsibility can make a person unhealthy. Of course weight gain will occur if someone eats a supersized meal for breakfast lunch and dinner. Eating fast food in moderation it is not any worse for you than most other foods. It is common to see things in the news about fast food places, especially McDonalds, and the negative effects they are believed to have on the world. What you almost never see is what McDonalds is doing to actually help people across the globe which is much more important. McDonalds has done more good for the community in the last 30 years than most people know. I believe McDonalds is a great corporation that is helping people across the entire world. McDonalds does much more good than bad in the world. One of Mc

The Story of the Boston Massacre

The Boston Massacre was one of the most important events of the colonial times. But this controversial topic brings up the question of whether or not the Boston Massacre was really a massacre. I believe it was just a cold war that broke into few shots fired and a few dead carried off. I believe that this entire incident was a huge misunderstanding. Through reasoning and valid evidence I will clear up this misunderstanding and you too will believe that the Boston Massacre was not a Massacre. My first reason for proving that the Boston Massacre was not a massacre is that it had no massacre content. The evidence comes from the historical context. The historical context states that a mob started throwing snowballs at the soldiers. The soldier

Journalistic Essay - North Coast Music Festival

As I walked down Ashland Ave next to Union Park in Chicago my heart began beating faster when I heard the music of North Coast Music Festival on August 29 at 7 o'clock at night I knew my three day adventure began. After I got inside, the first thing that caught my eye was the lights. There are five different stages, and all play different music at the same time. Instead of using names for the stages they used Chicago area codes such as 630,708, and 312. Union Park was set up perfectly. Anywhere I looked I could have found a beverage because they were in every corner of the park. It was very convenient, but the only problem was when I went to get a bottle of water the line took forever. Not only was the wait long, but the workers were the complete opposite of affable. I bought a bottle of water for four dollars and let them keep my dollar change and they were still rude to me. It made me frustrated because I was nice enough to leave a tip when most people leave nothing. Next time

The Odyssey: Bravery and Strength

After reading The Odyssey, it is evident that no matter what obstacle he and his men face, big or small, Odysseus' character remains the same. In the epic poem The Odyssey Homer explores and describes the life of a man named Odysseus. Many of Odysseus' god-like traits are evident throughout the many challenges he and his men face. Odysseus is a very clever, brave, and strong man. Throughout this epic, there are many situations where Odysseus proved his cleverness that ultimately saved him and most of the times his men too. One example of his cleverness is in book five, Odysseus tells Calypso that he does not miss his wife, but that he was simply homesick. He did this so that she would not get jealous and help him home. In book nine there are many great examples of Odysseus' cleverness. First to escape the island of the Lotus Eaters Odysseus has to tie his men down preventing them from eating any more of the flowers. Later in book nine when he and his men are trapped in the cave with P

Mexican Culture and Diversity

The Mexican culture encompasses a broad range of fascinating customs and traditions. Varying cultural influences throughout history have extended the diverse nature of Mexican customs, of which origins lie in Aztec rituals, the Mayan civilization and European conquests (Zimmermann, 2013). Mexican culture has evolved over time and possesses a unique flavor. Areas of prominence that help give insight into the intricacies of the Mexican culture are language, values, holidays and celebrations, clothing, food, art, and rites of passage. Each of these seven areas of interest make up what is known as modern-day Mexican culture. Language is an important aspect of Mexican culture. The culture has shaped the language, while the language has shaped the culture. The history of language in Mexico gives a background into the creation of current day Mexican culture. This culture in turn has made its mark on the structure of the dominant language spoken. Looking at these two concepts in turn, we can g

Ethical and Information Security Dilemmas

Ethics and security are two very important building blocks to a business. Yet, many people neglect ethics as an important concept in the work place. As new forms of technology evolve rapidly into the workplace, it poses new challenges for our ethics "the principles and standards that guide our behavior toward other people (Baltzan 2014). In other words ethics helps distinguishing right from wrong, and good from bad. A study on Data Security Breaches revealed that sixty-nine percent of companies reported serious data leaks responded that their data security breaches were the result of either malicious employee activities or non-malicious employee error (Vontu 2014). Since the percentage is high, this makes employee involvement the first line of defense. Meetings and training sessions help ensure that employees are trustworthy enough to work for your business. Information and data protection is crucial, however information can be made more secure by training your employees. The

Differences and Similarities in Romeo And Juliet

Romeo And Juliet is a brilliantly written tragic drama written by William Shakespeare in about 1594. This oftenly pirated play of the time was carefully written about two young "Star-Crossed" lovers Romeo Montague(17) and Juliet Capulet(13) who fatally fall in love in the midst of a century old feud between the two very prominent and powerful rival families at the time who were known as The Montagues and The Capulets. What makes this story so interesting is the two main points of similarities, along with the two main points of differences between the handsome Romeo and his beautiful lover Juliet. The two noticeable differences between their rolls include how each of them interact with their parents throughout the play, and how this could possibly affect how Romeo fulfills this exaggerated image of an obvious dynamic character, while Juliet ceased to always remain as a polarly static character. In contrast to that idea, they also share many similarities that include each rolls pers

The History of Gay Men and Women in World War II

"Gays! Lesbians! YOU can join my military, receive benefits AND love the same sex!" Although homosexuality is still taboo, this is what homosexuals in the military get to feel today from "Uncle Sam". Allan Bérubé explains that, before 1940, there was no concern to screen for sexual orientation for men in military services. This changed when around 16 million men registered for the draft in October 1940 since the Selective Service officials were now able to have strict qualification standards and were able to exclude homosexuals from serving. Before this, it was only the act of sodomy that condemned soldiers or officers to prison. Even with these new policies in place, the patriotic need for gay men and women to serve their country was strong enough for them to risk being ridiculed or rejected by the military and society and they lied and hid their homosexuality in order to serve. Most gay men tried to imitate the manliest man in their unit in order to

Racism Summary

The term racism can be identified as a doctrine that accepts biological differences among various races should determine cultural or individual issues and because of some natural causes one race is superior to others and has the right of ruling over them.Racism exists since people confronted with other communities that makes it as old as human history.Racist actions went down in history as a shame such as Holocaust and Srebrenica massacre.Unfortunately, although there are significant developments for human rights racism continues even in most developed counturies. It can be only said discrimination based on race evolved into a 'modern' aspect that is appropriate to 'modern' world .As Sherman(2000) claimed modern racism is transformed from a hostile attitude towards 'the others' to a more masked prejudicial attitude. This modern racism is more difficult to realize; however ,its consequences might be more dangerous.Masked modern racism is made in favour of a politically correct racism thro

Military Conflicts of the 20th Century

World War 1, World War 2, the Vietnam War and the Gulf War are all 20th Century conflicts, with different backgrounds but similar causes. The causes of these wars have not yet been officially stated, but historians have their own prediction on the causes. Between these four wars I think the main cause was nationalism. I think this is the main cause of the 20th Century conflicts we studied because they show up in a variety of the sources we used like books, websites and classes. I think that the main causes of World War 1 were the assassination o Franz Ferdinand militarism. I think militarism is the most important cause of WW1. Militarism is an important cause because all the countries believed in a strong military so they all tried to increase the size and strength of their army to prepare for the war. Germany had the best army, but Russia's was growing the fastest so Germany was worried that they wouldn't be able to overtake them as easily soon. The second most important cause i
