Stone Butch Blues by Leslie FeinbergAt first sight, Stone Butch Blues might appear to be a straightforward narrative fiction that follows the sexual tails of lesbian Jess Goldberg. However, this compelling novel is startlingly rich in theory in the sense that it foregrounds the interrelationship of class structures and gender constraints. Feinberg forces a debate about whether society's strict gender categories are truly necessary or not. Haunted by herpes of being, beaten by her father, and raped by a high school football player, Jess leaves home in search of others like herself, By meeting other manly women in the factories, Jess continues to grown, and learns more about love from prostitutes and about survival from her older butch lovers. However, there is no security in her new home, as vicious policemen raid the gay bars regularly. From the late 1940s until the early 1960s, erotic communities whose activities did not fit the postwar American dream drew intense persecution. Homosexuals were, along with communists, t |

Breathless by Wilfred NoyceI believe that Noyce is writing this poem for himself. This poem is a way for him to express his feelings of desperation and loneliness and get those feelings out of his system and continue on his journey. Noyce shows despair in the poem, he feels hopeless, lost in the mountain. He uses short sentences and monosyllabic words to express his physical difficulty, his breathlessness, and at the same time to link back to the title, Breathless. The use of rhyming words in some lines but not others shows the disordered state of mind that the author is in. However, this poem does not only focus on the poet's physical difficulty on scaling the mountain, but also his emotional turmoil and the conflict within himself. We can see clearly that Noyce is in two states of minds, the first one being his feeling of desperation, his wanting to give up. The second is his determination to finish climbing the mountain. These two different feelings of Noyce forms an emotional struggle. We can clearly see h |

A Letter to a Congressman - ObamacareDear Congressman Dan ____________, I am writing you about the Obamacare and insurance crisis in this country. I know we all need health insurance the start of the New Year. There are many people that are for Obamacare but, more and more people are struggling to afford insurance. I myself being one of the 15% of Americans that do not have insurance, I am only 20 years old and cannot afford to live on my own, being that both of my parents have passed let alone afford health coverage for myself especially when I would never use it. I live in Northern Michigan and I am Native American. I go to the tribal clinic for everything I need. No they don't have emergency coverage but I get a yearly appointment for free, as well and my dental, vision and prescription taken care of. I am an average healthy young adult, but yet I have to buy insurance when I am already going to the tribe for all the services that I currently get for free, but now I will have to pay for insurance for all of these serv |

Review of Midwestern State University's GymThe highly-celebrated Bruce and Graciela Redwine Student Wellness Center is a remarkable addition to the many recreational opportunities available at the Midwestern State University. This building is about 51,000 square feet, has two floors, an outdoor area and is located near to the school's campus. A lake is situated right next to the center which contributes to a calm, relaxed atmosphere. This center exceeded my expectations. It offers the basic services one would expect from a wellness center and more. It definitely has something for everyone. While approaching this wonderfully designed architectural structure, the interior of the center is immediately clear. The glass walls circling the building allows people to get a peek of some of the workout machines available and also an idea of what to expect without even entering the building. Upon entering, the Vinson Medical Center is immediately seen. However, the entrance to the gym is located on the left. The basketball and volley |

The Divisive Topic of Prisoner EducationIt can be argued both ways when the topic of education in the United States prisons is being discussed. As I began to talk about this with both peers and other people it became clear to me that it is a divided topic. One of my older relatives said to me that we should absolutely not educate criminals because all we are doing is creating "smarter ones " when the get out. I, myself, do not believe this and tend to agree with the school of that that shows by educating prisoners, both intellectually and vocationally while they are incarcerated will lead to a decrease in recidivism and help to create more conscientious, productive members of society when there are released back into their communities. With the number of inmates climbing to numbers over 2 billion, the number of those without high school diplomas is estimated between 40% and 60% which is the main reason why the recidivism rate is roughly 50% of the population (Harlow, 2010). It is a for gone conclusion that education factor |

The Inevitable Consequences of Global Warming"We the human species are confronting a placatory emergency- a threat to survival of our civilization that is gathering ominous and destructive potential. . . The earth has a fever. And the fever is rising. . . Indeed without realizing it, we have begun to wage war on earth itself. . . "-Al Gore, Nobel Prize acceptance speech, 2007. ("| Climatism." Climatism. N.p., n.d. Web. 16 Jan. 2014.) For the past few years, there has been an active debate whether there is such a thing as Global Warming. Many people have argued that our earth is gradually getting hotter while others have said that it is just a coincidence. Many unusual things have occurred in the past few decades and centuries. All of these actions pointing to one cause, Global Warming. On Earth, Global Warming is happening at a rapid pace. The Medical Legacy of Henrietta LacksIn 1951, Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Without asking or informing her, Henrietta's doctors at John Hopkins took tissue samples from her cervix and attempted to grow them and keep them alive. After she died, these cells, known as HeLa cells, became essential to scientific research, contributing to developments like vaccines and other medical advancements. However because of their race and socio-economic status, Henrietta Lacks and the rest of the Lacks family were exploited by doctors, researchers, and the media. Rebecca Skloot's book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks explores these issues, without taking advantage of them herself. The doctors at John Hopkins, specifically Richard TeLinde and George Gey, exploited Henrietta by taking her cells, growing them, and giving them away without letting her give informed consent. From Immortal, exploitation by the doctors is explained as doctors doing unnecessary and invasive procedures on vulnerable patients, de |

The Merchant of Venice: Shylock - Villain or Victim?William Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice was written around in 1600. The play takes place in the 17th century. The play is about the bloodthirsty Jewish moneylender who lends money to the Merchant of Venice, Antonio, a Christian. And later cannot pay it back. In the Merchant of Venice, Judaism and Christianity aren't just religions; they are constructed as racial (and even nation) identities as well. The central themes of the play are justice and mercy, love and hate, appearance and reality, and value and worth. After watching the play, the common question that comes in audience's mind is "Is Shylock a villain or victim? " In my opinion, I think Shylock is a victim. I think Shakespeare was clever when he designed Shylock's character because he is a fully developed character that dually is a stereotype. Shylock is a victim as a result of the bad treatment he is getting from the Venetians because of being a Jew. His overreaction towards the bad treatment is what makes him a villain but he is not actually a villain. Life for the Jews in the Elizabethan period was often very hard. They were not given equal rights as the Christians. There were many restr |

Arthur Miller and Madness in Salem, MassachusettsQuestion How does Miller use the ending of each act to make the audience feel the madness in Salem? Response Miller is able to portray the madness of Salem in a variety of ways, throughout the whole of the play however the ending of each act allows the audience to fully feel the hysteria. By incorporating changes of key themes and ideas as well as using links throughout the text and a variety of dramatic techniques towards the end of each act, Miller is able to leave the audience with a sense of this madness. The ways in which he reflects the madness change from scene to scene however each technique is just as important as others. Occurring frequently throughout the play, but particularly predominant at the end of Act I is the use of stage directions to increase tension and hysteria. After Tituba confesses to allegiance with the Devil, Abigail realises that this has saved her and so she decides to repeat Tituba's actions in order to save herself. She understands that in order to pr |

Punishment and Reward Systems in ManagementControlling is part of leading people but sometimes, it has bad effects. Punishment and reward can be used as a tool in motivating people especially in a team. However, if either of the two goes beyond its limit for the employees, there might be negative effects that could happen. People could earn fear if they are punished that could lead to inefficient work habit or even worse. But in some instances, employees get to be motivated with the help of putting punishments on them because they tend to meet their goal under pressure in a short period of time. For me, it is not good to push your team to the limit because they will be stressed out and they might lose their confidence and self-esteem due to the manager's negative criticism about their performance and the not so good outcome of their work. Informative Essay - Birth Control PillsThe birth control pill is an oral contraceptive for women, containing the hormones estrogen and progesterone that inhibit ovulation, fertilization, or implantation of a fertilized ovum, causing temporary infertility (dictionary.com). Today, the demand for birth control pills has risen over the years, and this has become very important for many women. With this point, getting birth control pills with parental consent is a debatable topic. Discussed in this paper, are reasons teenagers should not seek consent from their parents before getting birth control pills. First, if women were told hundred years ago that they will be able to take a pill that will prevent them from getting pregnant, they would not believe it. Teenagers should not have to get consent from their parents before getting the pill because it helps prevent unwanted pregnancies and also reduces the number of pregnant teenagers. According to the Britannica Academic, "when oral contraceptives are used correctly, they ar |

Abortion and ChristianityI am a Christian.I try to follow the pathways of life and morality that is upheld by many Christians. I believe every single word in the bible, so I will always use biblical text to support my arguments in life. In the bible, it says," Truly children are a gift from the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward" (Psalm 127:3). This verse sparks several pro-life supporting arguments. For starters, god is giving you a gift. You should never deny a gift from god. If god is giving you the gift of a child, then he obviously feels you are mature enough to handle that responsibility. If god thinks you are ready, then the argument "I'm just not ready for a child" is automatically invalid. Most of us know the cliche quote, "if god is for you, then who can be against you," so if god is giving you a gift, and you can turn to him in desperate times to hadle that gift (the child) then the things in life that make parenting "too hard," will start to look like nothi |

Race Theories and Inequality - Creation of the White ManBeing as old as civilization, slavery has shaped the way people live their lives today. The first idea of slavery was prevalent after 1550 when English traders traded the slaves of West Africa. A big debate overtime, which is still not settled is the idea of race being constructed essentially meaning natural, biological and inherent OR being constructed socially which means humans create categories such as race and gender. Race has been constructed due to hierarchies and white people having power over African Americans. Back in the 1800's, if an African American could not speak a language similar to the Englishmen, they were considered to be illiterate resulting in that person becoming a slave. Due to the construction of racism, unconscious racism is a trait in today's world that has become socially acceptable to obtain. For hundreds of years, the idea of race and racism has come up in people's everyday lives. Living in a society where the idea of racism is accepted is difficult because I see it in my everyday life and do not know how to approach the situation or how to solve it. 1 American Nativism is the hierarchies of wh |

Actus Reus, Mens Rea and Concurrence in LawDiscussion 1 Actus reus, occasionally referred to as the objective element of a crime, is a Latin word that refers to the guilty act. It is a criminal act that results from voluntary bodily movements describing a physical activity that leads to harm to another individual or damages to property. Another aspect of actus reus is omission, that is an act of criminal negligence, that involves not taking an advance action that would otherwise prevent an individual from being injured. Additionally, an omission can also be failing to warn the public that you have created a dangerous situation or not completing a certain task properly, which would result to an accident or a public disaster. Mens rea, is a legal term that describes an individuals mental state while committing an offence or a crime. It can be described as having a ge |

Improving Our Planet's Environmental HealthAs the fragile beauty of our earth continues to be forgotten, we must truly ask ourselves- what is more important, our personal needs or the environmental health of the planet we live on? It seems as if we are becoming more and more oblivious to the value of goods and services delivered to us, without being fully aware of its environmental impacts. For that reason, as citizens of this nation we must be aware of the steps we can take to reduce these harmful effects. "Reconnecting with the Earth,"" by David Suzuki creates persuading arguments that allow us to genuinely interpret our world's cry for a better future, beyond our negative impacts. Firstly, many people in today's society take advantage of everyday resources. At the same time, they are unaware of the negative impacts that are exposed to our earth. For example, we easily dispose items without questioning if they can be reused or not. Even items such as paper, plastic containers and even grass clippings can all be reused for something else. In the article, Suzuki says that "Even with Toronto's vaunted blue box program the output of unnec |

Equality, Difference and InferiorityEquality, difference, and inferiority amongst individuals are topics that are currently very controversial. In The History of the Peloponnesian War, The Apology, Phaedo, and The Republic, it is evident how Thucydides and Plato define each of these aforementioned ideas. Thucydides and Plato have differing opinions about what makes equality existent or nonexistent in a society and how this equality or inequality creates inferiority and difference between individuals. In The History of the Peloponnesian War it is clear that Thucydides is in favor of equality. Pericles' eulogy shows that it is his belief that all men should be viewed as equal in the eyes of the law. Warfare, public matters, and immigration are a few examples of citizen's equal treatment before the law. Athenian soldiers held great deals of respect in society and no matter their position or rank were buried with the same honor and respect. The men that serve in the army are seen as brave and as a result are treated equally |

The Waste Land and Other Works by T.S. EliotModernism in literature appeared at the end of the 19th century, and the beginning of the 20th one. It was a counter move against traditionalism in poetry, and modernist writers experimented with the poems style. New methods were introduced, such as "fragmenting " the poem, language-blending, use of allusions, and of the free verse. One of the greatest writers of the period is Thomas Sterns Eliot. Some of his greatest poems include "The Waste Land ", "The Hallow Men ", and "Four Quartets ". T. S. Eliot was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. "The Waste Land " was published in 1922, and is thought to be one of the most representatives works of modernist literature. The poem incorporates many elements of the said current. T. S. Eliot renounces traditionalist methods and creates a fragmented work that is filled with unrelated references to mythology, history and religion, with many languages blending together. In this essay I will comment on some of the referenc |

Video Games, Children and Violent BehaviorVideo games and gaming consoles are the newest technology that every kids and teenager in the world is or will be exposed to. Violent behavior in children is often linked to violence in video games. There have been many studies to prove this to be false. Most children are able to tell the difference between right and wrong. Video games are made for entertainment purposes, not as models on how to act in society. A parent or guardians' more active involvement in the daily activities of their children is more responsible for a child's actions then what they see in a video game. By blaming video games for a child's violent behavior, misdirects energy away from eliminating the actual cause of the behavior and allows the behavior to continue. If played properly and with proper supervision, video games can have a positive effect on children and help prepare them for the future. In the 1990's children television shows were very wholesome and always had a happy ending. Something would go wr |

Chinese Civilization - On the SinicizationChinese civilization has a reputation not only for strengths of economics and military but also for a seductive culture. Historically, Chinese culture has a thousand-year depth of development. Qin Shi Huang conquered all Warring States and united China. Since then, China owned a variety of cultures from those states. Those cultures were integrated into one unique culture after four hundred years under the splendid reign of Han dynasty. Then, these native Chinese people continued to enrich all aspects of their culture from ideology to art in next feudal dynasties. Due to this depth of development, Chinese culture became rich and seductive. The seduction of Chinese culture has an extraordinary strength in spreading to other races beyond China's border. With enough contact, those races would adopt Chinese trappings. Yet, they were always aware of conserving unique points of the heritages and cultures left by their ancestors, and even enrich Chinese culture. In the consideration of foreign |

Knowledge and Ethical ResponsibilityWe as humans are constantly learning and never stop once we are brought into the world and this leads us to the question, does the possession of knowledge carry with it an ethical responsibility? And if so, what ethical considerations? The statement, "The possession of knowledge carries an ethical responsibility,"" does hold some validity as most people would agree with this statement however some skeptics might argue that not all the knowledge brings with it ethical responsibilities. The knowledge you may receive might be a minor detail of something that is not of any significance and will not affect anyone in anyway and therefor this may be seen as not carrying any ethical responsibility. This is why we need to look at the possession of knowledge as a whole and not just as single case scenarios. There will always be some information that requires more ethical responsibilities than others. This makes it difficult for us to answer the claim, "The possession of knowledge carries an eth |
