Factors Which Encouraged Slavery

The growth of slavery was encouraged by several economic, geographic, and social factors. Economic factors were the Slave Trade, the cost, and the size of the plantations. A main geographic factor that encouraged the growth of slavery was the type of crop that was being produced. Social factors encouraged slavery as well. There are more factors that encouraged slavery but the more important ones are the economic, geographic, and social factors because they show how the growth of slavery affected the economy of the southern colonies. A particular economic factor that encouraged slavery was the Slave Trade. This trade brought African Americans from Western Africa to be sold off at auctions. Male slaves who were young sold for more money than old and female slaves. By buying a couple slaves, the strenuous labor that the plantation owner would have had to do, was eliminated. This

Short Stories of Native Americans

The Ojibway story "The Path of Souls" brings a sense of endearment. Readers see that the husband goes to the Land of Souls to visit his wife hoping he could somehow bring her back. Readers also see in "Blankets," by Sherman Alexie, that this short story about Native Americans also brings a sense of endearment, but towards parents instead of lovers. The son in this story respects his father. an alcoholic, enough to let a complete stranger sing a healing song to the blanket that was to be given to his father. Both men in these stories show feelings towards the ones they love, they even go to the extent of doing things that are not allowed to help their loved ones. Throughout each story, the main characters make mistakes but those mistakes do not hold either men from understanding and respecting their cultures. The author allows the reader to focus on the idea of love and endearment by starting &qu

My Very Difficult Life

Storming down the hall with tears burning my eyes red, I stopped near the door at the top of the stairs. My anger was hot in my chest; I felt like I was going to burst with an overwhelming amount of resentment and anger. I turned to the wall next to me, blasted a huge hole in it with my foot, and ran to my car, whipping out of the driveway to find the most secluded place I could think of. Not many people think that verbal abuse comes close to physical abuse. I can argue, however, that it is just as bad-and honestly in my opinion, much worse. My parents divorced when I was very young. At least fifty percent of people in the United States get divorced each year, so it's not too much of a special case with my parents. They had resentment towards each other, and each chose to date other people; my mom met a man named Erik in 2003. It was routine for my sister and me to meet our parents new love interests, and Erik initially seemed fine. As long as my mom was happy, I was content. In relationships, there are bou

The Story of an Hour – A Glimpse of Freedom

Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" is a short story which exemplifies a woman's dream of being free from the constraints of an unloving and undesirable marriage. This story, through vivid descriptions, portrays a woman's tormented lifetime and then exposes the momentary joy she feels when that torment surprisingly vanishes. Louise Mallard, the main character or protagonist, is a frail woman with a heart condition who upon being told her husband has died in a railroad accident, grieves for a moment, then becomes immensely delighted because she will be free to live her own life, that is until her husband walks in the door. At that moment, Mrs. Mallard passes away, and as the events unfold, it becomes clear that the theme of this story is not her physical death, but ironically, it is her short-lived, emotional resurrection. Kate Chopin cleverly reveals a lifetime of self-sacrifice by emphasizing the literary elements, symbolism, imagery, and foreshadowing. Through these th

Glaucon and Injustice in Plato's Republic

To be Just or Unjust? Throughout Book II of the Plato's Republic, Glaucon is extremely infatuated about understanding the exact meaning of justice; this is important because through courage, Glaucon will go on endlessly about how highly he speaks of injustice, in order to get Socrates's refutation on what the true meaning of justice is. First I will begin to present the positions in which Glaucon is arguing for: what people believe justice is and its origins, how people practice justice unwillingly as something necessary and that people who live an unjust life, live a much better life than a just person. Then I will provide my analysis on these arguments, relate these arguments to real examples of my own and evaluate his Glaucon's claim that those who don't act unjustly when they can do so with impunity are "wretched and stupid". Thus, Glaucon's argument of a natural man, who has no conscience to refute injustice, holds exceptional amount of truth through the evidence tha

Analysis of a Short Story - Duel by Richard Matheson

Hidden meaning in stories have been around since we have been able to make stories. Though throughout the years, they have progressed and so has the meaning behind them to fit the current society that it was written in. Short stories will almost always have more of a meaning behind them as since the plot will revolve around it. But what is the meaning to the short stories and do they reflect on the author's life who wrote the story? Take Richard Matheson and his short story known as "Duel" which revolves around a man named as Mann. In this story we see that there is multiple cases of deeper meaning in the story but exactly what are those cases? In the story, Mann is a travelling salesman who is married and has children. He is on his way to a deal which he views as very important but is side-winded but a truck who he views as a nuisance and wants to get in front of. But no matter how much he tries he fails every time since he speeds up and slows back down. As the story progresses we see how crazy it gets and he starts losing his mind just to beat this truck and get to the deal, though the same process repeats the same time again and again, it passes him. He ev

Character Development in The Chrysalids

In The Chrysalids, David Storm's character develops significantly from the beginning of the novel to the end. In the beginning of the novel, David does not know he obtains the power of being telepathic, he lives in Waknuk, and he likes Sophie. Whereas at the end of the novel, David has learned a lot about his powers, escapes to Sealand, and loves Rosalind. David changes and develops throughout the novel by learning substantially more about himself and figuring out where he belongs. Thus David's character develops from the beginning of the novel to the end in terms of his understanding of his telepathic powers, where he chooses to live, and whom he decides to love. The first way David's character develops from the beginning of the novel to the end is that his understanding of telepathy becomes greater. In the beginning, David does not yet realize that he is different from what is considered the norm in Waknuk. "Other people, as far as she knew, did not have such pictures in

Socially Responsible Song Lyrics

Rap music and the hip hop culture have been under attack since their creation. Parents, teachers, news media and even the Supreme Court have joined the fight against hip hop music and lifestyle that comes along with it. Hip hop has been blamed for gang activities, school shootings and isolated incidents around the country for decades. Hip hop music has been criticized for its violent nature and hip hop music has also been under scrutiny for its objectification of women in its lyrics. In her essay In Defense of Hip Hop, Cathleen Rountree states, "hip hop music frequently assumes the central role of scapegoat when violent words and deeds erupt among the young".  Typically, artists are rapping about how much money they make, what kind of fancy cars they drive and how many women they've had sex with. Rappers talk about drugs and guns in their songs with regular frequency. Fortunately, not all rap songs are about guns, drugs and sex. Lose Yourself is a rap song by the artist Eminem a

The Isreal-Gaza Conflict

Catastrophic, traumatic, life shattering, tragic; these are all words that describe the Israel-Gaza conflict. This paper will include a brief history and explanation of the conflict, and give examples of impacts on everyday life from different perspectives, then, I will tell how I believe Israel and Palestine can achieve peace. The conflict has been around for centuries. Generations of people have come and gone living through the horrors of the wars and violence between Palestinian and Israeli suffering.. will there ever be peace? Let's start in 1918 at World War 1 when Britain won the land over the Palestine from the Ottoman Empire. The area becomes known as British-mandate Palestine (a mandate is an authorization to govern over conquered territory). Britain governs over the Jews and Arabs living in that territory for thirty years (1918-1948). In 1921 Britain gave the area of British-mandate Palestine east of the Jordan River to Emir Abdullah who then ruled as king over the Hashe

The Impact of Autism on Parents and Siblings

Abstract In recent years, there has been an alarming concern about the growing problem of Autism in the United States. There are many misconceptions surrounding the cause, behaviors of those with the disorders, and ways to interact productively in the society without much emphasis on its impact on individuals and family members. Being a parent can be stressful, but raising a child with an autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) can be an overwhelming experience for parents and families. Compared with parents of typically developed children and children with other developmental disabilities, the pervasive and severe deficits often present in children with ASDs are associated with difficulties in caregivers, decrease parenting efficacy, and increased parenting stress, as well, as mental and physical health problems in parents. In addition to significant financial strain and time pressures, high rates of divorce and lower overall family well-being highlight the burden that having a child with a

The Meaning of Hope

What is the real meaning of hope? This word can be so strong to some they believe that without hope we have nothing and to others it may mean something totally different, is hope just wishful thinking, or is it as some would say optimism. To have hope in something or a situation is a good feeling it lets us look forward to the next day, hope lets us know that there is something good to come. One of the lady's I take care of was diagnosed with cancer she has never had a major problem in her life until this hit her. But yet she is always smiling and making jokes, she has such a positive attitude towards things in her life and the situation she is going through. I have talked with her plenty of times and she has always told me that she has god and hope on her side and these two thing is what makes her look forward to the next days to come. because of her having hope it brings her spirits up it changes the way she views her situation, other people and the world. Hope helps people liv

Loneliness and Solitude in Of Mice and Men

Loneliness and solitude are recurring themes in 'Of Mice and Men'. This essay will be focused on how these themes relate to the characters George, Crooks and Candy. The book is very heavily focussed on these issues and John Steinbeck has this by naming the town itself Soledad, which in Spanish means loneliness. All of the characters in the novel have an ongoing battle with loneliness and they each have their own way of combatting it. George has an ongoing struggle with loneliness throughout the novel. He is unable to establish relationships with people due to his father-like role looking after his disabled friend Lennie. He is lonely because he does not allow himself to form emotional attachments to people because he is constantly on the move every time Lennie makes a mistake. Although George thinks Lennie is holding him back in life, he clearly values Lennie's companionship as supported by this interaction: "I can go off into the hills and find a cave" &qu

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Overhaul

Honestly, the SATs have the ability to invoke fear in me the same way the boogeyman makes little kids afraid to go to sleep at night. Just thinking about it makes me want to faint. My experience with the SATs was so awful. The day already started off horrible because I lost my glasses. I had a teacher walk me ALL around the school so I could look for them. I got super annoyed that I had to take a test in addition to the stress that I was already feeling from every other aspect of my life. I thought about all this stress and decided. When the teacher dropped me off at the testing room after our 2 minute conversation about the various breakfast foods I figured I I don't believe that a simple score on a test reflects on my ability to be studious in college. The test does not show what I have learned during the past three years in high school but it does show my ability to regurgitate the information I learned during $5,000 SAT training classes. The thought of the SATs cause anxiety in c

Justice in the Works of Aeschylus

In Aeschylus' two plays Agamemnon, and The Libation Bearers, he demonstrates that a crime committed cannot go without being noticed and without everyone getting the justice they deserve. As read in Agamemnon, Clytemnestra believed she had to get justice for her and her city by murdering Agamemnon because he abandoned them for ten years, sacrificed their daughter Iphigeneia, and was unfaithful to her. This way of justice being served is also seen when Orestes slays his mother Clytemnestra and her lover in The Libation Bearers, due her killing his father Agamemnon. Both of Aeschylus' plays show the idea of justice being served throughout them all by way of murder, and it is usually driven by revenge and vengeance. "To avenge [Iphigeneia's] death, Agamemnon is killed by his wife, Clytemnestra, " (Buller). Revenge is not always the best form of justice, but to Clytemnestra it was perfect. We see how Aeschylus highlights the " revenge in classical Athenian attitudes to punishment and justice " (William) when Clytemnestra is more than happy to lead Agamemnon to his death. Getting news of her husband

Fritz Scholder: Native American Artist

Fritz Scholder, a controversial Native American artist forces his audience to look at traditional Native American portraiture in a new way. The oil painting Mad Indian No. 3 is a perfect example of the voice that Scholder gives to Native American artists. His color scheme and abstract style, with the use of contemporary American Indian issues in a traditional portrait setting compels the viewer to question their own beliefs and views of the historic Native American and the modern one, and their place in westernized America is today. Frtiz Scholder born in 1937 from Minnesota is not your typical Native American artist. His grandmother was Lusieno tribe of Mission Indians, but Scholder himself was not raised as an Native American and does not consider himself to be Native American. Brought up in westernized society, Scholder has a unique view of American Indians in the western world. His interpretations are the dominant subject throughout his art work that has left lasting impressions in

A Claim for a United Ireland

Ireland, not the country, but the island, is an island of Irish people, inhabited by Irish people, and yet, not owned by the Irish people. The entire island encompasses thirty-two counties, of which twenty-six are owned and governed by the Irish. These twenty-six counties make up the Republic of Ireland; however, the other six counties located on the northern most part of Ireland make up a dependent country of the fully owned and controlled by the U.K. Until the early 1900s Ireland was under complete control of the British Crown, as it had been for many years. The people of Ireland have historically been Catholic, but there has been, and still is, a small minority of Protestants whom mostly live in the northern section of the island. The Catholic Irish have long considered themselves Irish people, independent from Britain, and subjected to oppression by their British Invaders. On the other, hand the Protestant Irish generally consider themselves less Irish than British, often identif

The Gold Bug and The Goonies

There are many obvious similarities and differences between 'The Gold Bug' and The Goonies. In English class we read 'The Gold Bug' and watched The Goonies. The Gold Bug was about a little boy whose father died and his mom sends him to live with his uncle. While living with his uncle he comes across Sullivan's Island, a seemingly deserted island. As he is on the island he befriends 2 grown men. Together they work to find treasure. In The Goonies a group of kids are getting evicted from their homes. They find a treasure map and go on an adventure to find the treasure. There are many obvious similarities and differences between 'The Gold Bug' and The Goonies. There are many similarities between 'The Gold Bug' and The Goonies. One big similarity is that in both stories the protagonist is after some sort of treasure. In The Goonies the treasure was on a ship, located in a cave, hidden by One-Eyed Willie. In 'The Gold Bug' the treasure is hid

Young Goodman Brown and The Devil and Tom Walker

1824 to 1835 in America was a period of bitter evil. Living in a time of slaughter, witchcraft and immorality, authors Washington Irving and Nathanial Hawthorn were influenced immensely. Both writers display differences and similarities of how these tragic events embarked them physically and mentally. Irving's "The Devil and Tom Walker ", and Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown " both generate gothic stories by expressing the misfortune of the devil's presence through seemingly alike stories using themes to show consequences, the importance of symbolism and the impact of tone. A prominent literary device, theme, replicates itself throughout both passages. It creates a personal connection between the reader and the story. In Irving's story people who lie, steal or cheat money hold an essential topic, which ultimately leads Tom Walker's afterlife into hell. Hawthorne's main character also concepts that pertains to committing sin. The main character, Young Goodman Brown commits one of the seven deadly sins, pride. Likewise, he ends up in hell. Taking Business Risks

Risk taking is an essential part of any kind of business. Before we apply risk taking in the case of a business, it is important to understand that life in itself is a risk, even though most individuals have not figured this out. Nonetheless, when people take risks in business, they face their risks and address them in different ways. Larsen (2006) believes that all business is risk, and that a company should be skilful enough to address its risk factors. Most people do not want to hear the word ˜risk,' because associate it with some sort of danger or failure, and therefore, a large number of people in society have failed to address the various risks they are faced with in the most appropriate manner. As Rees (1977) notes, risk to many is not viewed as a thing that can result to anything positive. Some view it as a danger and others as some form of tension and to the extreme; some would view it as a possible loss. Nonetheless, risks are part of business, and any businessperson

Love - A Biological Constitution

Perhaps of all the mysteries in life one of the most baffling is the concept of love, specifically human love and the many aspects within it. Even psychoanalyst Eric Fromm stated "there is hardly any word which is more ambiguous and confused than the word love " (Thims, 2007, p. 517). With love being so complex and mysterious it has inspired professionals from poets to scientists for thousands of years to explore its wonder, research its affects on our lives and marvel at its magic through countless stories, plays and books written on the subject. So what is love? Many psychologists have presented arguments to show love as a series of biochemical components, while others simply view love as a social response. By presenting the science behind the physiological responses of the brain, some early ideas on love that are still held today, and by outlining the evolutionary and social views on the nature of love, it will be argued that the best explanation of love does not come from taking a

The Significance of Grendel in Beowulf

A lot of us make decisions based on the things we want. Humans are, and will always be the most selfish animals to exist. However, there are certain situations that deal with emotions and self-esteem that sometimes take control of you. More often than not, this motivates you to do more harm than good. These similar thoughts can be identically felt in the mystical creature Grendel in the epic of Beowulf. Grendel wasn't treated properly and was always frowned upon. He suffers grinding loneliness and the burden of being hated and cursed, and all for nothing. This leads to him causing chaos and being cold-hearted when he witnesses happiness. "For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. " (Proverbs 6:34) Grendel displays the most primitive human qualities. He's intelligent, capable of rational thought, and feels emotions. "The monster of evil Greedy and cruel " (Beowulf, line 5, 2nd story) Grendel's childhood is

Finding Happiness

One of the biggest misconceptions about money is that it can make us happy. "We all struggle to get richer and we hope it will make us happier; that doesn't even mean it will. " Happiness is what everyone is looking for, but they might be looking in the wrong place. I'm going to introduce happiness; finding it is easier than people think. Some of the main sources of happiness come from experiences, such as traveling, exercising and getting together with the family. Basically anything one can enjoy doing, rather than buying material things. We have to learn how to love the basics, experiences are the best choice: "More stuff doesn't equal more happiness; we have to do things instead of buying things. "(Lindsay Abrams) Traveling, enjoying our relatives and exercising are good examples of things we can do. I'm going to prove my point with valid information from research, "Can Money Buy Happiness? " by Sonja Lyuboming, the article "Buy Less Do More " by Lindsay Abrams and finally "7 Benefi
