Summary of Laurence Reed's Auschwitz: A HistoryI thought I knew about the Holocaust before, and I thought I knew what Auschwitz was, but my reading taught me so much more than I would have ever learned in school. Holocaust, before World War II may have been used to define, as the dictionary states, "a destruction or slaughter of a mass scale." Now the word holocaust defines one historic tragic event, which impacted not only Europe but the entire world as well. Laurence Reed's, "Auschwitz: A History" taught me a lot about the progression of both the Holocaust and the famous death camp. Heinrich Himmler of chief of Hitler's secret police, recruited farmer/member of the SS, Rudolf Hoss, for a special job. Hoss' job would be to take on the first Nazi concentration camp in the small Polish town of Oswiecim, which translated in German to Auschwitz. Himmler became in charge of moving the Jews and ethnic Germans out of Germany, but he ran into a problem with space. Himmler had begun transporting hundreds of thousands |

Aaron Copland's Quiet CityOn August 18, 2014 Live.com played a Aaron Copland's original Quiet City performed by Christopher Brellochs on their classical music station. Although I only heard the end of this piece, I decided to research the composer of this music. Aaron Copland was born November 14, 1900 to Sarah Mittenthal and Harris Copland. Copland received his musical interest from his family. Almost everyone, except his father, were musical beings. His mother even sang and played the piano. Because Aaron was so shy, it was second nature for him to take up his interest in music. At the tender age of six, Aaron began to play around the piano at home and at the age of eleven, Aaron Copland sister, Laurine, began teaching him how to play. It was also at this age, he created his f |

Robert Reich on the Rich and PoorIn the essay, "Why the Rich are getting richer and the Poor, poorer " Robert Reich writes about the topic of global economic structure and each set of workforces in the social spectrum. Reich's essay seems to be warning the general public of what is happening all around us. We ourselves are classified under his hierarchy of social class and he effectively proves so as he addresses the economic gap with valid evidence regarding history and statistics. Robert Reich intends to inform the readers of the growing gap between the upper half of society and the lower half of society, by using a metaphorical structure, and effective examples and statistics in history. "Why the Rich Are Getting Richer and the Poor, Poorer"" by Robert Reich, states that we as Americans were once in the same economic boat, however, the three identities within the economy, being routine producers, in-person servers, and symbolic analysts are now classified as three different categories. Reich first states how routin |

One Night Stand, Long-Term RegretSex is considered a taboo up until we become college students. We have people whom want to remain chaste until marriage, we have people whom want to have experimental encounters with as many people as they can in college, and then there are people whom would only consider having sexual relations with their significant other. College parties are wild and it is guaranteed that at least 5 couples will end up hooking up at the end of the night. Most hook ups becomes one-night stands. If we were to ask those individuals if they regret their past encounters many would say yes because drugs or alcohol were involved. Drugs and and alcohol play an important role in sex. It is more likely for an intoxicated person to engage in sexual encounters than a sober person. In the magazine Psychology Today, there is an article called "If I Could do it All Over Again" that talks about the half-life of sex. A Reflective Memoir on My Trip to ChinaIn life, the experiences of an individual tend to shape his character and bring out who he is. When being involved in these kinds of experiences, embodied knowledge is embedded and becomes a major part of your life. A major event in my life was going to China with my high school and seeing things I never saw before. Although China has beautiful aspects, I also saw terrible parts of the country such as poverty and pollution. The beautiful aspects of China gave me the aspiration to travel the globe and learn about different customs while the horrendous aspects gave me the ambition to help out in the world and make a difference. A vital stage in my life, after visiting China, is when I volunteered at Lutheran Medical Center. This is where I helped people in need and helping people in need should be like second nature, and embodied knowledge plays a huge role. Although China was fascinating, I also saw many poor aspects. Poverty there was crucial, and you can sense the pollution as soon |

Planning My College Education"You are in fabulous shape, do you have any idea of what university you want to attend?" The excitement that I felt was speechless. Not having an idea what college was at that time, I never thought of hearing those words as a freshman. I was one of those kids who was smart, but thought college just was not for me. I kept my grades high, but thought college was not for me. I started to realize that I would be fine without college and could succeed in life, but I still managed to keep my grades up. Sophomore year I continued to excel in in my education, but college was still not clear. I had no idea what SAT or ACT tests were, but certainly I heard all of my peers sharing their scores amongst themselves. I remember my first progress report of my sophomore year being four A's and two B's. I achieved something I |

Iago - Machiavellian VillianIago, a character from Shakespeare's Othello, reflects Machiavelli's "the end justifies the means" (The Prince). Within the play Iago is no ordinary villain but a Machiavellian villain. The difference between the two would be Iago does anything needed to accomplish his goal. The great difference of a Machiavellian villain compared to an ordinary is the fact the villain will accomplish the task by any means. Regardless the morality the villain will use any means as long as the goal is achieved. An ordinary villain within most stories may have some kind of evil plot to accomplish; ways of the tasks within the plot to be accomplished are straight forward and planned. Most likely if a plan goes a story it is abandoned for its failure. Iago supports Machiavelli's statement "the end justifies the means" with his actions within Shakespeare's Othello. Iago accomplished his goal through a thought out plan in which he did anything necessary; even murder. The motive for Iago comes from the character Othello giving a job position to a man named Cassio. Iago believed he deserved the position from experience and seniori |

Where Are All the Children?Step outside your front door, look around, and ask yourself whats missing. It didnt immediately dawn on me, but a few weeks after moving to the suburbs of Staten Island, I noticed that the neighborhood was devoid of children playing outside. When I was a kid, I fondly remember riding my bike on the block, roller skating with a friend, walking to school, or just running around and getting dirty. Today, if I were to let my kid play outside on the block, I wouldnt be able to avoid the disapproving jaundiced eyed look from the neighbors. Take Lenore Skenazy, who in 2008 let her 9 year old son ride the NYC subway alone. After writing a column about it, a media storm ensued and she was labeled Americas Worst Mom. The controversy prompted her to start a blog about the insanity of helicopter parenting. She argues that there is no rational reason that parents who grew up free-range, having been allowed to walk to school, take mass-transit, play in the yard and get dirty, should be preventing their kids from doing the same. Parental neurosis is on the rise and spreading like |

Technology - Backbone of Society"Wifi and cell phones are slowly killing off the human race!" preached a crazy lady who lives on the rural Western Slope of Colorado. Cell phones and wifi might not be causing cancer or killing people, but technology might be more harmful than helpful. With every breath a new technological advancement is being put into place all across the world. Technology such as T.V.s, computers, and cell phones have become the center that society revolves around. The reasons why technology is harmful, for example, are cell phones keep us too connected, people rely on it too much, and certain parts of children's brains don't develop as well if they use technology too often. Technology by definition is the making or modification of tools, machines or techniques to solve a problem or issue. By that definition technology is a great advancement for people as a society. It helps people accomplish tasks easier on a daily basis. The most technologically advanced society would be the "best&q |

Beowulf and HerculesTwo great heroes from different times can be more alike than people may think. Beowulf is from the Anglo Saxon culture, and Hercules is from ancient Greece. In both of these cultures people were Pagans. This meant that they worshiped many gods. Anglo Saxons worshiped Germanic gods, and The Greece worshiped Greek gods. Both of their civilizations were based on war and battle. Beowulf and Hercules are also the same in many ways but are different at the same time. These two heroes have many things in common like how they are both brave and will do anything to protect their people. They both have to face evil monsters and kill them. Hercules has to face twelve deadly challenges, and Beowulf only has to face three monsters. Hercules has to kill the Nemean lion and bring back its skin, kill the Lernaean Hydra, catch the Ceryneian Hind, capture the Erymanthian Boar alive, clean the Augean stables in one day, slay all the Stymphalian birds, capture the Cretan bull, steal the mares of Diomed |

Sisterhood in Antigone by SophoclesThe relationship between sisters is not an easy one to understand. As sisters grow older their relationship evolves and changes with them. The older sister will typically continue to be the one in charge of situations involving both sisters. Sophocles does a good job presenting the relationship between sisters but fails at showing how real the arguments can be. Ismene should have fought harder against her sister in the opening argument and not waited until her sister was facing death to join her. As a sister I will sacrifice myself, guilt trip my sister into making a decision, and lie for my sister to protect her because of the love I have for her. I have a younger sister and there is nothing in the world that I would not do for her. My life has revolved around her since the day she was born. I often do not know what I would do without her in my life. I can understand Ismene having a change of heart when she realizes she will lose her sister forever. When she speaks of not having a re |

Analysis of A Midsummer Night's DreamA Midsummer Night's Dream is a play by William Shakespeare, which was believed to be written between 1590 and 1596. It depicts the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons. The adventures of four lively Athenian lovers and a group of actors are included, along with fairies that live in the forest in which most of the play is set. Act III is at the height of the excitement of this play, because Lysander has been affected by the fairy dust and no longer loves Hermia. Instead he is under the love spell for Helena. A passage in Act III, scene ii, lines 395-412 where a conversation between Puck and Oberon is going on, is a great example of Shakespeare's profound writing style. It holds many examples of figurative language, allusion, and sensory imagery. Figurative language can be categorized into metaphors, similes, and personification. Metaphors and similes can be similar in the sense that they both compare two things to each |

The Widespread Influence of ChristianityIn God the Father/God the Mother: The Gnostic Gospels and the Suppression of Early Christian Feminism, Pagels shows how political and social concerns shaped Christianity's treatment of women, but doesn't specifically state how. As a result of conflicting and contradictory teachings, early Christianity lacked unity. As a decentralized religion over a large empire, Christianity contained various beliefs and interpretations that appealed to both sexes. Early Christianity appealed mainly to the masses of ordinary people; however, as it gained popularity amongst intellectual elites, it rose in the social hierarchy. When the Roman empire experienced political turmoil in the 3rd and 4th century, church leaders attempted to unify Christians by creating a standardized teaching. The result was the formation of the Roman Orthodox Church, the loss of many diverse early Christian teachings, and a standardized teaching that subordinated women. Ultimately, Christian theology's rise in social and po |

Perceptions of Gender and Social NormsA reoccurring problem within our society is how women and men are perceived. The gender norms within our society have a lot to do with how people see one another especially the way one someone is expected to look and act. Women most often are stereotyped and are said to only be suitable for wearing and doing certain things to fit into the social norms of our society. In the article "Veiled Threat: The Guerrilla Graffiti of Princess Hijab" the author Arwa Aburawa describes the art work of Princess Hijab and how with painting hijabs on advertisements she tries to change the way women are expected to look and are supposed to meet certain cultural expectations. In Ayesha Nusrats article "The Freedom of the Hijab", she talks about her own experiences with wearing the hijab and how she believes that women have a standard based on how they look and dress especially in public when we see a women walking around wearing a hijab. Japanese Internment - Executive Order #9066Shortly after Imperial Japan's infamous attack on the United States fleet at Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had to make a decision regarding how to handle the sizable Japanese-American population on the west coast. The problem was that while they weren't enemy combatants, the question of national loyalty still existed, as did the possibility that any one of them could sabotage already strained military efforts. Roosevelt's infamous solution to this problem was Executive Order #9066, which authorized the internment of between 110,000 and 120,000 Japanese Americans on the pacific coast. Roosevelt justified this authorization on a legal argument that the need to protect the country from espionage outweighed the individual rights of those that were interned. Though we cannot know exactly what laws Roosevelt discussed with his counsel, we can retrospectively examine the rules that have in the past given the president this power to act. As Justice Hugo Black put it in his maj |

The narrative serves as a persuasive document, written to pass on the experiences and to help the abolitionist's cause with the optimism that these recounts would successfully lead to "hastening the glad day of deliverance to the millions of [his] brethren in bonds " (Douglass 125). Written by himself, Frederick Douglass provides detailed description of the troubles and challenges that he faced growing up as a slave in Maryland and insight into his development from a slave to a freedman by utilizing slave narrative techniques to produce sympathy and understanding. The narrative follows several themes as readers struggle through Douglass' difficult words, from the physical, mental, sexual abuse that served as a bind of slavery to the use of ignorance slave-owners would employ agains |
