Poetry SlamPoetry has a long history, dating back to the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh. Early poems began as part of an oral tradition, from folk songs to focusing on uses of speech in rhetoric, drama, song, and comedy. History goes back to later attempts on features such as repetition, verse form and rhyme. The mid-20th century, poetry has sometimes been more regarded as a fundamental, creative way of expressing language. While studying literature, you will notice that poems comes in many, many different forms. One that seems to be trending lately is a type of genre called "poetry slam. " Poetry slam is "a competition at which poets read or recite original work. These performances are then judges on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience. " In 1985, a construction worker and poet named Marc Smith started a poetry reading series at a Chicago jazz club, the "Get Me High Lounge, " trying to discover a way to breathe life into the open mic, in a poetry format. In 1986, Smith approached the owner of "Green Mill, " with a plan to host a weekly poetry cabaret on the club's slow Sunday nights. Jemilo (owner of the Jazz club) welcomed him, and on July 25, the Uptown |

A Family PortraitThis picture of my family shows the unity within my family members and I. My family is very important to me, because they are the people I go to when I need advice. I trust them more than anything. What this portrait says about my family, is that despite our differences we still manage to maintain sanity amongst each other. In a first person perspective, we fight often, more than we probably should. My parents are seen as the mediators of the family, especially when my sister and I are not getting along. My family does have flaws. When we work together with our different strengths amongst us, we can get things accomplished. Despite these differences, we can continue to remain unified at the end of the day. They all have different personalities, making them different from each other. In this picture, my family and I are smiling together. This is symbolizing a happy family. In reality, my family is not as happy as you would think. Behind the smiling faces, are tongues that speak hurtf |

The Victorian Hairwork AgeIntroduction The Victorian Age gives the impression it was an age for proper formal behavior, and that behavior is upheld by modern popular culture through movies and television. It was an age where men and women courted with chaperones. The language men and women used in writing letters to one another were flowery and passionate. Rich people had mansions or palaces full of servants. It is an age where womens clothing bound and tortured countless of them with wire bustles covering their behinds. The bustles were made that way to emphasize womens hips as suitable for childbearing. Womens torsos were bound in whalebone corsets made to trim a womens waist down to eighteen inches so that her tiny waist was a contrast to her hips. They were so bound up with corsets that at times the tightness could make women faint for lack of air. It was an Age where women suffered from vapors. It was an era full of dark wallpapers and heavy velvety drapes in dark colors. The furniture was also d |

Ideal Ethical TheoryMoral and ethical theories are systems which attempt to provide reason, guidance, or judgement of an action or non-action. The system attempts to make a statement about whether an action is moral or immoral, just or unjust, often with the goal is for the vast majority, ideally everybody, to conform to a given moral theory so that the best, most ethically sound world would come into existence. The topic of my essay will be to develop a balance between opposing moral theories. I will not be developing a moral theory of my own, but creating an account of some, but not necessarily all, key characteristics that would, arguably, be necessary for a moral theory to possess in order to not fall to contradiction or other such fallacy while still refraining from contradicting general intuition about the vast majority of subjects, cases, and dilemmas. Addressed issues, and questions, may consist of, or relate to, isolating which factors are critical in determining the moral obligation of a situati |

The Texas Voter TurnoutWhy is voter turnout low in Texas? Texas is ranked the 42nd in registration of voters and 44th state in the number of people discussing politics or contacting public officials. The low civic participation and voters turnout in Texas can be explained with the following factors. Firstly, the two-party system dynamics contribute to it, since citizens can be unable to understand the differences between the candidates from the opposite parties concerning the issues, particularly when the candidates converge to the middle of the political spectrum. Unlike in swing states, where the turnout of voters is higher, in Taxes the complete control is gained by the Republicans, Democrats also |

Rhetorical Analysis: Photographing EmpathyWater is an organization whose main focus is to build wells in parts of Africa, Asia, and South America where clean water is unavailable. The water that children and adults alike have to drink is often contaminated with many different types of bacteria. Many people in the developing areas of sub-Saharan Africa, Indonesia, and South America are forced to walk very long distances to get water for their families and for themselves. The charitys website informs people of the risks that are associated with drinking contaminated water. Some of this water has tragically caused the death of many people who are forced to drink it by causing diseases such as E. Coli, Cholera, Hepatitis, and others. The great majority of the deaths caused by drinking contaminated water are in children under five years old. Also, the time that it takes for some to walk and get the water is time that could be used to get an education or to work to provide for other needs that said people might have. This crisis is |

Healthcare Reform - Stakes and PositonsU.S. Healthcare Reform I.) Stakes and Positions Healthcare reform continues to be one of the most contentious subjects of debate in American politics. Healthcare accounts for over 16% of federal expenditures, forecasted to increase in the years ahead1. The two main political parties represent the interests of an array of interest groups and providers at state and national levels. Republicans protect private interests, promoting the view that healthcare should be a privilege, and quality should be preserved over expansion. Democrats champion reform, seeking to expand single-payer networks, and promote healthcare as a moral right for every citizen. The main tension in the reform debate is that the expansion coverage through a single-payer system leads to higher government expenditures and lower quality of care, while private insurers leave many Americans uninsured. Political partisanship between groups and parties fuels a circular debate over what constitutes successful reform. |

Pablo Neruda - Separation and LoveNeftalí Ricardo Reyes Basualto, more commonly known as Pablo Neruda, began his widely renowned career in poetry as a young boy. Neruda was born July 12, 1904, in Parral, Chile and later moved to Temuco, in southern Chile. Neruda's father was a railway employee and Neruda's mother died only two months after his birth. His father remarried. Neruda spent his childhood surrounded by the beautiful nature typical of southern region of Chile. Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basualto, changed his name to Pablo Neruda as a pet name that was named after his favorite Czech poet Jan Neruda. Neruda sought this pet name so that his parents would not know or recognize their son's input in poetry, which they frowned upon. According to Isabella Sobejano, author of "Author, Poet, Thinker, Chilean Politician and Diplomat," she stated that on her visit to one of three homes Neruda had, the majority of his time was writing and living in Isla Negra (meaning Black Island). Isla Negra is a very small town |

Attending a Poetry ReadingWalking down 10th street, I was surrounded by small townhouses that all looked pretty much the same; the whirling, chilly breeze of autumn tingled at my bare neck and causing shivers down my spine. Wearing three layers of clothing I was still freezing. I constantly shifted from one foot to another impatiently looking for my final destination. I stopped in front of a beautiful, historic townhouse that read ' the Lillian Vernon Creative Writers House". As I stepped inside, I was greeted by a wave of warm air that calmed my nerves. The host and director of the program "Deborah Landau" welcomed us inside. The hall was filled with people chatting away; white clean walls surrounded me, as if they had just been newly painted. 24 striking black and white portraits were displayed throughout the house, capturing artists such as John Ashbury, W.H Auden and Phillip Roth to name |

Bearing Arms in AmericaGuns are weapons primarily made for protection when facing danger, ever since the war periods. Like everything man made, guns have its disadvantages, especially when in the wrong hands because it can be misused, immediately, going from protective weapons to murder weapons. Guns can promote violence or enforce order and safety in certain places like a bank if seen with a police or any law enforcement agent and at the same time could cause problems if it was seen in the hands of a masked individual who ran in the bank demanding for money. According to the second amendment of the United States constitution, it states that, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed". This gave citizens in the United States the right to own a gun, hence making everybody a victim, who means anybody and everybody is in danger of getting shot at anytime. In America, guns are usually used to promot |

Architectural PrecedentsArchitectural precedents shape the way we design and engineer buildings. As human beings any time we smell, hear, touch, or taste anything, we equate it to something we are already familiar with. Precedents work the same way; you cannot have design without first having precedents. Architectural design process as well as structural design process must be thoroughly understood before a design can begin. Research on various forms of architecture are also necessary. Whether it be neo-classical, modern, Greek revival, or Italianate, these examples allow designers to create spaces properly so their functions will easily be realized. Las Vegas is known for its opulence. Completed in 1996 at 1149 feet tall, the Stratosphere Tower sets the precedent for being the largest observation tower in the United States, as well as the tallest freestanding structure west of the Mississippi river. It is even taller than the Eiffel Tower and more than 400 feet taller than Seattle's Space Needle. The S |

Discovering the Good LifeCuriosity as defined by Webster, is "a strong desire to know or learn something." The concept of achieving the good life relies entirely upon this inquisitive value, without it, the basic question of how one attains the good life does not exist. Curiosity can be seen in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Siddhartha through two separate and unique depictions, both of which prove its essentialness in attaining the good life. In the first work, Rebecca Skloot critically examines curiosity through her description of George Gey, but still values it's importance, and in the latter work, Herman Hesse embraces curiosity's importance through Siddhartha's journey towards enlightenment. Rebecca Skloot was initially intrigued by HeLa cells in her high school biology class. She sat as her professor, Donald Defler, briefly introduced HeLa cells, but failed to answer any of Skloot's follow up questions. This inspired the journalist to journey towards discovering where, why, and how |

Human Nature - Good Vs. EvilFrom the very beginning of human existence, humans have been ever so curious about the nature of their own beings. Over the years the civilizations have found ways to research this idea. How do we solve it, how do we know what is good what is evil, how do we cleanse ourselves, how do we get better. These all are questions derived from the original, if we are innately good then do we need salvation, if we are innately evil, how do we get saved? We have addressed this problem over centuries of questions and debates some of which have caused wars and famines. As mankind has developed and evolved our way of discovering what is our innate nature and what is learned has become a part of almost everyone's lives. The human condition as it were is as researched, debated, questioned, and discovered, as God himself. It could be argued in fact that the human condition and god are quite the same. We have attempted to address the dichotomy that is our nature and each to their own, however some end |

The Role of Dreams in Identity ConflictSwami Vivekananda advises those who seek eminence to "Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life; dream of it; think of it; live on that idea. Let the brain, the body, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone." Romantic as this may seem, there are consequences that come in its stead. Placing too much significance on dreams causes a person to misguidedly equate his identity with his desire to attain those dreams. Common themes in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, James Thurber's short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story Winter Dreams establish that infatuation with dreams causes conflict, confusion, and loss of identity. In Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, protagonist Jay Gatsby assumes an alias and conceals his past in order to attain opulence, resulting in the equivocation of his identity. For Gatsby, or Gatz as he was once known, the past was a barrier to an |

Literacy PracticesLiteracy by definition is simply the ability to read and write, though when put under analysis it can seem much more complex. If literacy truly was just the ability to read and write then where does comprehension come into play, also why do we seek to learn it, and not only that but where is the application of literacy as well? Literacy has an array of uses affected by many circumstances, and cannot be defined so simply. A literate person can read and write which is great for them, but what do they do with it from there? According to the authors of "Literacy Practices", David Barton and Mary Hamilton, literacy is used as a set social practices. These social practices of literacy are simply called literacy practices (Barton and Hamilton 22). With literacy being a social practice, it will be affected by social status, and the world around you. For example someone very wealthy that has had a top notch education may have a hard time having a conversation with an impoverished man from a third world country that has a very minimal literacy. Literacy is seen on different levels because of the availability to learn, and how strong the a |

Cairo's InfestationPride, a word so strong that the feeling of it rushes through a person by merely saying it. The Egyptian people claim to have this great pride for their country; in fact they revolted twice in the past 4 years in order for it to improve. However, how can such citizens be so proud of a country when its visual image does not represent pride? The people themselves destroy this exotic land in so many ways, although one of the major ways is through the excessive use of street vendors scattered across the country. While some argue street vendors are necessary, they bring Egypt's appearance into a 3rd world abyss. Egypt has suffered great misfortune in the past 4 years, switching from one leader to the next in order to provide a strong united country. The people have grown to see protesting as second nature event, they have a great sense of nationalism, which leads to the extreme events in order to gain what they want. "Many observers note that vendors' presence has significantly inc |

Limitations of Slave OwnersIn the article, Plantation Society in the Antebellum South, Faust makes the case that there was a plantation "system"" that slave owners used to control their slaves. To a large extent, this was done by undermining their society and culture. There was also a need to be lenient and caring so that the slaves would feel an obligation to the owner. Throughout the text it gives us almost a guide of major do's and don'ts of what you are supposed to do when you are a slave owner in the south. The guidebook explains such rules as undermining slave society and culture, and establishing domination over the slaves. Further, the author suggests that it was also important to be kind to them, and trick them into thinking that they had an obligation to the master. In other words, this article makes the assertion that slave owners dominate their s |

Oedipus and SufferingAs King Oedipus and the Theban Legend incorporate many themes, one particular themes sticks out. Does suffering make one wiser and stronger? Throughout the play Sophocles forces us to read between the lines to solve the question. Oedipus's fate and decisions lead to the suffering of himself and the citizens of Thebes and lead us to decide for ourselves: does suffering build you up or wear you down? Sophocles disagrees with this statement because if he were to agree with it, I believe he would not have made the ending so tragic. It is clear to the readers that once Oedipus discovers that he fulfilled the prophecy; his entire life spiraled out of control. The constant stress that followed Oedipus wherever he went did not make him any stronger. It wore him down. As Teiresias states, "You are the cursed and polluter of this land " (Sophocles 35). By |

Disneyfication and ConvergenceMedia and Marketing go hand in hand, this can be seen when reading "Convergence: News production in a Digital Age " and "Disneyfication of Children's Culture They also play a key role in what type of audience is targeted and influenced. In "Convergence ", the author Eric Klinenberg discusses the evolution of media in the news from 1970 to the 2000's. He uses a company called "Metro News " as an example and shows the company's evolution of different types of news media. While in "Disneyfication ", author Henry A. Giroux states that Disney films or animated films in general inspire as much cultural authority as public schools, family and religious institutions do. (pg. 66) Analyzing Disney as a corporation and its films, he is able to explain to us how Disney shapes children and to a certain extent; America. Both of these readings allow us to notice the change in media and its power in society. As mentioned before, "Convergence " mainly discusses the evolution of media in the news. Kline |

The Art of Letting GoSometimes, we wait so long for things that we thought would come. We invest so much time in waiting whether for a person, for a thing, or for an event. In my case, I can very well say that waiting is what I do best. I already had experienced so many instances wherein I had to patiently wait even if most of them ended up in disappointment. Although I would like to write about them all, I guess I will just focus in a certain experience which stood out among the others because of the pain that went with it. I was in my junior year back in high school when I first experienced how it was to be wooed by someone from the opposite sex. Being courted wasn't a usual thing for me so I really had no idea back then of how will I respond to him. What I did was that I just didn't mind him. I constantly ignored him, I even did silly things just for him to be turned off at me, but he just stayed by my side even if I kept on shoving him away. Although I liked the feeling of having someone who always ma |
