Why We Act the Way We Do

I decided to examine my life using the cognitive perspective because I'm easily able to relate my choices in life, to the way cognitive thinking is applied, and under the umbrella of the cognitive perspective, stand Piaget's theories, directive therapy techniques, and the ABC method. These have proven to be the best explanations for my actions. A cognitive quote by Arnold Bennett (1995), that I consider very relevant to the way I see life, says "There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added the experience of the soul." These 3 sentences tell us that our emotions are the core of all our actions, and as you may know, the cognitive perspective is all about our internal processes. Cognitive perspective is a school of psychology that focuses on mental processes, such as creativity, perception, thinking, problem solving, memory, and language. Cognitive psychologist

This giving Americans our first ten amendments. From here every American was guaranteed certain rights such as freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, and the right to a fair trial. Tod

Apollo - God of the Silver Bow

"Hear me, he cried, O god of the silver bow, that protectest Chryse and holy Cilla and rulest Tenedos with thy might, hear me oh thou of Sminthe. If I have ever decked your temple with garlands, or burned your thigh-bones in fat of bulls or goats, grant my prayer, and let your arrows avenge these my tears upon the Danaans. Thus did he pray, and Apollo heard his prayer. He came down furious from the summits of Olympus, with his bow and his quiver upon his shoulder, and the arrows rattled on his back with the rage that trembled within him. He sat himself down away from the ships with a face as dark as night, and his silver bow rang death as he shot his arrow in the midst of them." (Homer) Apollo Apollo, as referred to by the father of Chryses in the quote, is known as the God of the Silver Bow. Apollo can be as described in this quote can have no compassion on people who have crossed him. Another example of this is when the woman Niobe said she was superior to Leto, because Niobe

A Soldier's Symphony

War is a terrible thing. A terrible thing that is necessary to keep my country safe. I joined the military so I could give back and protect my loved ones and my country. I knew war was going to change my life but I never thought it would be this dramatic of a change. My name is Axle Steele and I served in the United States Marine Corps from the years 2002 to 2008 in active duty. My father died in the Vietnam War and I always felt it was my calling to complete his mission and join the military. I took my duties in the military very serious, as a man should. I was neither the strongest man nor the biggest, but I've always told myself, "It's not the size of the dog that's in the fight, it's the size of the fight that's in the dog." My best friend Cooper Jones has been my partner in crime for as long as I could remember. He joined the Marines with me because he could not foresee himself as a scholar attending a fancy university. We went through everything together from hustl

I Do...For Now

Boy meets girl, falls in love and gets married, exemplifying the classic love story that every little girl dreams about. Some young girls even begin to plan their wedding before they receive their first kiss. What is never planned is divorce. One never hears a little girl tell her mommy, "I just can't wait to get divorced!" Unfortunately the taboo associated with divorce has been stripped from current societal norms. There has been, and always will be, serious circumstances, such as abuse, abandonment, and adultery, necessitating divorce as an option, however without the stigma attached to divorce, a plethora of young, and even older couples, frivolously enter into the bonds of matrimony with the thought that "if this doesn't work out divorce is always an option." Peter Kramer wrote "Divorce and Our National Values" claiming that "Once both partners are allowed to be autonomous, the continuation of marriage becomes more truly voluntary. In this

Choosing a Path - The Poetry of Robert Frost

Robert Frost is famous for his ability to ask the reader about their life with the use of simplistic words. Frost does this by using the poetic technique of duality. Duality is the contraction of two opposite qualities; for example light and dark or left and right are two dualities. Along with the use of dualities throughout his poetry, Robert Frost uses nature to make his poetry to connect dualities with symbols that ordinary people can relate to. In Robert Frost's Poems "Fires and Ice", "The Road Not Taken" and "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening" Frost asks deep questions about the readers life through the use nature and metaphors. I believe that Robert Frost's poetry makes the audience think about his or her life without using vocabulary that scares off the average reader. Even though he uses this simplistic language, he adds complex questions that made me ask about my own life. This is the reason I believe that most of his poetry is misunderstood by

Look in the mirror, what do you see? In IV, Klosterman interviews American pop culture icons, athletes, and writes about his experiences too. He often tries to look beyond a person's image and discover their real personality. He interviewed pop culture icons like Britney Spears and Bono and he looked for what's beyond their image and how they viewed themselves. Throughout the book he analyzes many aspects of American mainstream media. These pieces are all connected because of the common theme of looking for the significance of how these people see themselves and how self-aware they are of their public image. "U2 is the most self-aware rock band in history. This generally works to their advantage(Klosterman 21). In this piece Klosterman interviews Bono, the famous singer and songwriter of U2. Analysis Essay - Water Pollution

Water is essential to life. About forty thousand years ago that is why most human settlements occurred near a water source. These people bathed and drank out of the same water which caused outbreaks of various diseases. Unfortunately the importance of clean water was not understood until the second half of the nineteenth century when modern development took place. (Adi R. Ferrara) One could say water pollution began as early as the first humans appeared but it really started to show significance in the last two-hundred fifty years because of high industrialization and urbanization. Water pollution has been a one sided topic rather than a controversial topic because many agree it has caused a harsh impact on the environment. This issue basically boils down to what are the effects of water pollution on the environment and how has it changed at the local, national, and global level. Water pollution can be defined as any "physical, biological or chemical change in the quality of the

A Class Trip to Boston

Usually nothing happens when I go to a new place, but there was this one time when I went to Boston. This was a class trip I took in 8th grade that was 3 days long. I was scared because I thought I would get lost or the class would leave me. So on the first day we went on a duck tour. It was very cool because it went on land and water and to me it was very interesting for me because up until that point in my life I've never seen something like that. We were typical tourists; we went to see the oldest naval vessel, Paul revere's house and the old north church. On the second day was the day that something unexpected happen. On that day the teachers gave up permission to roam around the Quincy Market. Of course me and my friends were excited because the teacher was letting the whole grade go anywhere to eat and shop. My friends and I tried to go into all of the shops. I got my name written on a grain of rice which I thought was so cool and I paid 30 dollars for that. Now that I think o

Becoming a College Hockey Player

Ice hockey is a sport that my family has played for many generations. I was around two years old when my parents put my into skates for the first time, I loved skating. I would go to hockey everyday with excitement to get back onto the ice. Pat Cranston, my uncle gave me a hockey helmet when I was about 4, I would wear that helmet everywhere I went. Within that two week period I wore that same helmet all day all night, I slept with it on! My parents knew I wanted to become a hockey player. The idea of becoming a college hockey player was unrealistic for me for a few years, I really thought I had 0 chance of ever becoming one. I really started to realize that it was possible in the last 2-3 years, once I started playing with and against some of the best players in the Minnesota. I can't wait for the day that my "dreams"

Foundations of Kinesiology - Occupational Therapy

Sports have been a part of my live ever since my existence here on earth. My father enrolled me in karate as a toddler and from there competition has been instilled in my body every since. Basketball entered my life a few years after karate in a neighborhood association program for youth sports. Not only was competition instilled in my body but it was also in my mother and father, also. He did not have the opportunity to play sports like many of his youngers siblings did, so you can kind of say he lived his love of sports through me. On the other hand, my mother was very fortunate to have the opportunity to play sports. In high school, she ran the 100 and 200 meter hurdles in track and she was a starting shooting guard on her varsity basketball team, as a freshman. She also qualified to represent her high school in the regional finals for track. Unfortunately, she did not make it to the state finals. But as you can see, sports have been embedded in my life ever since I entered in

The Power of Literature

In higher education, the focus shifts closer to the math and sciences and farther from the arts and humanities each year. Most dystopian novels show the loss of the arts and the major advance in science. In Margaret Atwood's novel Oryx and Crake there is a display of the vast decline in the knowledge and importance of the arts. The main character, Jimmy (Snowman), is looked down upon and even sent to a lesser university for his love and extensive knowledge of English. In this world of genetic advancement that Atwood created, individuals were looked down upon if they did not happen to be a "numbers person " (Atwood 74). Following the story of Jimmy, the reader is able to see Atwood's emphasis on the importance behind English and all other arts and humanities to the human race, without them the world turns into a number driven, dangerous place to survive in. In the beginning, there is clearly something off about the land presented. As the novel progresses, the reader is given informati

A Theory of Knowledge

"The ultimate protection against research error and bias is supposed to come from the way scientists constantly re-test each other's results. " To what extent would you agree with this claim in the natural sciences and the human sciences? The quote above is indeed correct in the way that scientific societies constantly re-test and preform tests again to see if they will yield the same results. Scientists perform these replicated experiments to further know the purpose and methods in the experiment. In the process, scientists are finding percentage error and minute differences in their results. In this essence, scientific tests will almost all end up with a high percentage of variability and never reach a firm conclusion. It can then be reasoned that the re-testing of experiments and results do not protect against researcher error and bias. This does not work because it is almost impossible to replicate conditions and results exactly, bias is always a factor in research, and many scien

Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis

In Lewis' rendition of Till We Have Faces he presents the reader with a new and refreshing perspective of the ancient Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche. However, this interesting tale is much more than a myth retold. Lewis' central theme in this book is obsessive love. The sick and twisted love that Orual has for Psyche clearly depicts the obsession she had with Psyche, which is mirrored in her vindictive and manipulative schemes to hold her captive to her. Lewis draws a parallel of this type of love and explains it more in his book The Four Loves. In this book he outlines what possessive love is and how it is laden with selfish ambitions and can easily turn from love to hatred. When Lewis speaks of love in The Four Loves he first presents the reader with two main types of love, gift-love, which desires to provide and give safety and security, and need-love, which loves because it needs and depends on the other person (The Four Loves, 11). Lewis makes it clear to the reader that the Divi

Personal Statement - An Independent Child

Usually it's the parent taking care of their child; in my case it was different. I was seven when I realized I was independent. As a single parent, my mom had three jobs, so by the time I woke up for school my mom was already gone. When I would get home, the house would be exactly how I left it in the morning, lonely and quiet. It wasn't until recently that I understood what my mother went through to put a roof over my head. It was then when I truly felt compassion for her and our situation. Throughout my childhood, I didn't know what it felt like to get in the car with your mom after school and get asked, "How was your day? What did you learn today? " I never was able to receive homework help from my mom because she didn't speak English. It almost felt like I was living alone. I spoke English most of my day, and then I had to come home and attempt to speak a whole differe
