Men, Women and Communication

Bill Cosby once said, "Men and women belong to different species, and communication between them is a science still in its infancy. " Through observation and personal experience, I have realized the validity of this statement. The way men and women communicate are on complete opposite sides of the spectrum. Even though men and woman speak the same language, they often fail to communicate due to the different ways they speak. This phenomenon is known as genderlect. While observing and listening to the everyday communication between men and women, there is often a lack of understanding because of different ways communication is developed and the way relationships are built. Let's talk!- Girl talk! Relationships between girls are focused around talking. There is not a thing a girl can not share with her girlfriends. Less talk- more action! Boys have other approaches to building friendships. Their main focus is on activities rather than conversations. Boys keep their problems to themselv

Abstract The following essay is about psychology and the different people who made it possible for us to comprehend and being able to learn about what psychology is and how it affects our everyday life. Each person has a different point of view and each one made a huge impact on today's society, with this essay we will be able to see how their discoveries has helped us understand everyday life, but in order to understand our life we must first learn about their life and their upbringings. The Many Faces of Psychology Many people have had many impacts in today's society but no one has ever been as worldwide known as Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution. Charles Darwin was born in March 12, 1809 in Do

Ecuadorian Pasillo

Pasillo is one of the most popular music genres in Ecuador. It embodies the culture and it is considered the musica nacional. In the 1800's it was characterized by its influence of ¾ waltz, the requinto, and its poetic lyrics about national pride and idealized women. Today it continues to have the same charecteristics. It started in Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador, but only continued to thrive in Ecuador. In Venezuela it is still called the valse. The "national sentiment based on sadness, loss, and nostalgia is expressed through pasillo lyrics, vocal style, and tempo. These musical and national sentiments would become particularly meaningful after Ecuador lost half its territory to Peru in 1942 "(Martin-Frost, cite). It is not just music, but a sense of connection and pride that ties all Ecuadorians. "The Ecuadorian development of cultural nationalism, like that of many countries throughout Latin America, reveals a shift from exclusion to inclusion of the masses "one that moves

Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now

Heart of Darkness, a novel by Joseph Conrad, and Apocalypse Now, a movie by Francis Ford Coppola are two works that parallel one another, but at the same time reflect their own era in time and their creator's own personal feelings and prejudices. It can be compared and contrasted in many ways. By focusing on their endings and on the character of Kurtz, contrasting the meanings of the horror in each media emerges. In the novel, the horror reflects Kurtz's tragedy of transforming into a ruthless animal, whereas in the film, the horror has more of a definite meaning, reflecting the war and all the barbaric fighting that is going on. Conrad's Heart of Darkness deals with the account of Marlow, a narrator of a journey up the Congo River into the heart of Africa, into the jungle, his ultimate destination. Marlow is commissioned as an ivory agent and is sent to ivory stations along the river. Marlow is told that when he arrives at the inner station, he is to bring back information about Kurt

Legal Motions in a Court of Law

A motion is a written or oral application made to a court or judge to obtain a ruling or order pointing that some act be done in favor of the applicant in a legal matter. An application to a court by one of the parties in a cause, or his counsel, in order to achieve some rule or order of court, which he thinks becomes compulsory in the progress of the cause, or to get reassured in a sudden manner from a matter that would cause injustice. When the motion is made on some matter of fact, it must be reinforced by an affidavit that such facts are true; and for this purpose, the party's affidavit will be received, though, it cannot be read on when the hearing is scheduled. A motion is a written request to the court. When a party asks the court to take some kind of action in the possibility of litigation, other than resolving the entire case in a trial, the request is made in the form of a motion. Motions are often made before trials to apply or amend judgments. Motions may also be made to

Socrates and Death

I believe that Socrates has defended himself cleverly, but he was unable to unequivocally prove that he is indeed innocent of the charges. He has provided some decent counterarguments, but they were not sufficient to overturn the charges. I will demonstrate this first through Meletus' charge that Socrates does not believe in the gods (Apol. 26c9-10). I am of the opinion that Socrates does not fully believe in our gods because he questioned the oracle of Delphi when he claimed, " ˜What ever is the god saying, and what riddle is he posing? For I am conscious that I am not at all wise?' " (Apol. 21b3-5). He then acted upon his doubt by searching for others who are wiser than himself (Apol. 21b10-21c2). This sort of questioning is threatening to our society, as Athens is fortified and built around the gods, and we should live in order to please them and avoid their wrath. To further confirm our decision that Socrates distrusts the authe

The Great Gatsby and America in the 1920's

Secretary of commerce Herbert Hoover described the rise of a freewheeling economy and a heightened sense of individual liberty after World War I as the "New Era " . When World War I ended in 1918 several young Americans who had fought in the war returned to America with a heightened disillusion of reality, as the horrors of the war made everyday life and social morality of the early 1900's seem trivial. Following the recession of 1921-1922, the nations economy grew spectacularly, which led a new age of consumerism and materialism as one newspaper announced, "The first responsibility of an American to his country is no longer that of a citizen, but of a consumer. " During the 1920's the perception of the American Dream was that an individual could achieve success in life regardless of family history or social status if they only work hard enough, yet the families with old wealth belittled those with new wealth who rose to riches and this created a large social class division. Deaf Children and Acquiring Language

It has been said that reading requires two related capabilities, first you must be familiar with a language and second you must understand the mapping between that language and the printed word (Chamberlain & Mayberry). Children with a prelingual deafness are at a disadvantage for both counts, but some of these children can read fluently. Research suggests that deaf children with good signing skills may be better readers than those with poorer signing skills. This indicates that knowing a language may facilitate learning to read. However, skill in signing does not guarantee an ability to read; reading must be taught. Although the process is much more complex, the ability to acquire language is possible for prelingual deaf children. Prelingual deafness refers to a person who was or becomes deaf before having learned a language. Roughly 12,000 babies are born with prelingual deafness each year, which is roughly 4-11 out of every 10,000 babies born. A child with a profound hearing l

Richard R Wright never waited for things to come to him, he would always make take the first steps to get what he wanted. He never wai

The American Dream in The Great Gatsby

The American Dream and How it is portrayed in The Great Gatsby By: Emma Macklin The Great Gatsby is a novel published in 1925, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and is narrated by a character named Nick Carraway. The story follows a man named Jay Gatsby, who is Nick's neighbour; he is a man who has wrapped his life within the past five years around his sole desire to be with a woman named Daisy Buchanan. The Great Gatsby is a novel of tragedy, love and rich vs. poor. In this novel, the American Dream is a concept that is consistent throughout the entire story. The author portrays the concept to the readers to show that people will go through many levels of extreme situations to ultimately achieve what is known as the American Dream at that period in time. Fitzgerald shows this through several different examples of literary devices and elements of fiction, but the three that made his portrayal of the concept stand out the most were symbolism, motifs, and setting. The first l

Influential Movie - Remember the Titans

Remember The Titans Remember The Titans may be one of the most influential movies ever made. It taught us all about how life used to be and how to come together as a group of people. It is a classic football movie filled with many obstacles and challenges that young kids must go through. These obstacles vary from racism to dealing with death. It is based on a true story that took place in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971. What makes this movie classic is how the players and coaches were able to overcome the issue of segregation and build relationships to form a championship team. Building relationships, overcoming differences, communicating, emotional intelligence, etc. are all interpersonal communication concepts that we see in this amazing movie. What started all of the need for these things to happen is when the school board announced there will no longer be any form of segregation in schools. The black and white players on the football team had a hard time accepting each other and

Analysis of Tennyson's Ulysses

The poem "Ulysses " is a dramatic monologue written in 1833 by Alfred Lord Tennyson. Alfred Tennyson was born in 1809 and is seen as one of the most prolific Victorian poets. Tennyson wrote this poem as a means to cope with the death of a dear friend. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Tennyson depicts the myth of Ulysses to portray his desire to move on beyond the death of his friend and go on with his life. Much like Ulysses upon returning back to Ithaca, it was not sufficient enough for Tennyson to simply reach a state of peace. Tennyson shows that he wants to continue to move forward and brave the turmoil of life. Tennyson's "Ulysses " draws aspects of two existing tales of Ulysses, one by Dante in his Inferno and the other by Homer in his epic The Odyssey. Tennyson's poem is a long speech given by Ulysses telling of his intense boredom in Ithaca and his thirst to get more out of life like he did in his travels. This is displayed while Tennyson mingles the two earlier versions by

Diversity and Ethics in the Workplace

Abstract In recent years, ethics have become a focus in the business world. The Bernie Madoff case is a prime example of an unethical leader and what can happen when a leader does not have any moral integrity. Ethics programs have come a long way, but there is still much more work that needs to be done. This paper focuses on the effects that unethical behavior can have on an organization, while highlighting some of the traits of ethical leaders. This research shows that ethical leadership starts at the top and ethical corporations need to hold everyone within the organization to the same ethical standards. The determination of a corporation's ethical values should be based on the way that they conduct themselves in all business dealings, not only with customers, but also in the way that they treat everyone within the corporation. This author concluded that the implementation of a solid ethical program is a sound business decision, regardless of the field in which the company competes.

Three Good Women

There are many themes of Middle English literature that are very prevalent in the many narratives surrounding King Arthur and the court he leads, which contributes heavily to the category we know as Middle English literature, but chief among them are considered to be courtly love and religion. However, the evil portrayal of women is a theme that is just as dominant in the literature of the time and is one that should always be examined for the problematic certainty that it is presented with. The absurd idea that all women are dangerous and reason for the ruin of men branches from the idea that they are the direct and therefore influenced descendants of the first woman to ever be perceived as evil: Eve. The women of "The Wife of Bath " and "Noah's Flood " fall in perfect alignment with this theme as their independent thinking is perceived not as a quality that should be praised for its radicalness, considering the culture of the time, but instead is shamed and used as evidence of women

Parables - Moral and Spiritual Lessons

According to the Oxford English dictionary, a parable is a simple story that is used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. In the Christian Bible, Jesus Christ often uses parables as allegories to teach and to communicate the hidden values of God's kingdom. In Luke 15, Jesus is responding to the challenge of the religious leaders of why he would make friends with the sinners and even eat with them. Jesus then tells a series of parables of a woman who has lost her coin, a man whose sheep is lost, and the story of the lost son. With all three parables, Jesus conveys his ideology that God is more interested in finding and celebrating what was lost and is now found than in all the good behaviors of the religious leaders. In particular with the parable of the lost son, the story creates a sense of the "unfairness " of the father's extravagant celebration over the repentant son. However, the deeper message Jesus wants to express to the audience is that God's favor is not based on how go

The End of Gun Violence

What I choose to propose is that the United States should ban all personal use of firearms.Gun control is one of the most controversial topics within the United States. With growing gun violence there has been a push in the American people to have stricter laws controlling guns. With recent casualties such as Trayvon Martin a young African American teen who was unarmed was gunned down by neighbor George Zimmerman ultimately just because he looked suspicious. Some people think more gun control laws are necessary to put a cap on violence, while others think they should have that right to freely and legally protect themselves with guns. I feel the laws controlling guns are too lax.The minimum age for purchasing a firearm such as a rifle is eighteen, just because a person has reached that goal that is stated to be the start of adul

Finding the Beauty in and Accident

When an artist creates a piece of art, he or she usually has some sort of plan for how the piece will turn out. Often times however, the piece will come out differently than imagined. This piece could then turn out to be a masterpiece, a work of art that has endured and been regarded as an excellent piece of art, in the eye of the critic, and the artist would receive praise for creating a masterpiece even though the end result was not what was planned. An artist's intention in is not always seen in the final piece, but still plays a factor in starting creation, and beauty in art is defined on an individual basis, therefore it is independent of intention. In "The Accidental Masterpiece On the Art of Life and Vice Versa, " Michael Kimmelman tells the story of Bob Ross, a painter who hosted the TV show The Joy of Painting. Ross instructed his viewers on how to paint with the motto that "you may feel hemmed in by work or by family, but before and easel you are your own master. "1 Kimmel

Civic Responsibility

Civic responsibility is a social commitment that is beneficial because it supports the community's well-being by applying personal contributions. It is based on the knowledge that the health of local, national, and global communities are dependent on people's interactions. Simple actions such as helping someone in need and being a good citizen to more complicated acts such as addressing millions of people for a worthy cause are all examples of civic responsibility. Civic responsibility is seen throughout our history, but one of the most monumental acts would be the famous "I Have a Dream " speech. Martin Luther King Jr. took up a noble cause and decided to act upon it. He fought racial discrimination peacefully and sought to better his community for his family and his people as well as future generations. This is civic responsibility because he

Two Worlds Collide - America and Japan

There are a number of connotations that are often used to describe a people's culture. But culture is generally accepted as the way people chose to live their lives whether it be by their traditions, languages, notions, dress or eating habits, or even their lifestyle. Any comparison of two cultures would produce a wide range of cultural differences. A comparison of American and Japanese cultures reveals numerous variations and some similarities. Japanese, as well as American cultures are heavily influenced by the people and the kind of society the people living in any region of either country. For instance, the society in Japan is largely homogeneous and middle class, whereas the American society favors a majority heterogeneous. This style is due largely to the increased levels of immigration, and as the reform continues to press forward this will continue to leave America with their diverse ethnicity a country with an inequality gap so large that no other country will come near it. These two varying trends have profound influence on the cultures of the two societies. Due to the divergently ethni

Modernization in Africa, Asia, and Latin America

Cyrus Veesers idea in Great Leaps Forward: Modernization in Africa, Asia, and Latin America is to simply explain how less-developed nations across the planet tried to catch up to "the Wests " rise to power. "The West " is referring to the world's major military-industrial powers, including Britain, France from 1800 on and later being joined by Germany and the United States in 1850. The main goal of this book is not to explain how the West rose to power but rather how the less developed parts of the world such as China, Mexico, Ethiopia, and Turkey, understood and responded to this new power. Portfolio Diaz is the most famous modernizer in Latin America's history, he ruled from 1876 to 1911. After having to prove himself to fight his way into power, the first order of business he focused on was bringing order to his country because after many years of war the nation was in a delicate state. He used two thirds of the country's budget for law enforcement and an army because there coul

The Colonists and the Constitution

After the succession from England the colonies attempted to govern themselves as sovereign nations. It was clear that this system established under the Articles of Confederation wasn't working. In order to unify this new nation the Framers of the new constitution were given the monumental task of creating a new form of government. The Federalist, No. 7. proclaimed "America, if not connected at all or only by the feeble tie of a simple league.. would be gradually entangled in all the pernicious labyrinths of European politics and wars " (pg.). They envisioned a system that was equal and fair for everyone. A system that had the interest of the people at its core with a strong central government to protect the liberties and freedoms they had fought so hard to obtain. The original constitution was a frame that mostly favored a strong central government and did its best to include the citizens in its rule, but still possessed the ability to infringe on the rights and power of the peo

Preparing to Meet Odysseus

It is the way other people perceive your character that identifies who you truly are as a person. Homer's, The Odyssey, tells the story of a man, Odysseus, who has been stranded on an island, prohibiting him from his safe arrival home from the Trojan War. The brave soldier is now trying to return home to Ithica, to reunite with his family, and reclaim his estate. The first four books of The Odyssey prepare the readers for the introduction of Odysseus, as he is seen through the eyes of his closest friends and foes. His wife, Penelope, patiently awaits his return, while his son, Telemachus, eagerly seeks out to find him; neither of them knowing what to expect. Even the Gods speak highly of Odysseus, despite his falling out with Poseidon, and attempt to give him a safe return home. King Nestor is among the friends of Odysseus who accounts for his character. Nestor was pleasantly surprised by the arrival of Telemachus to his quarters, but took no time to realize that Telemachus was Odys

Revealing Realism

Imagining the horrific events that so many experience everyday simply to ensure the safety of citizens they have never even met is unfathomable. The mental hardships the select few face are overwhelming to the human mind and sometimes even lead to extreme mental turmoil such as post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. There are so many risks for those that have stepped forward to fight for their country, yet so many continue to do so. In "Dulce et Decorum Est," Wilfred Owen utilizes gory and haunting imagery, reminiscent figurative language, and gruesome diction to unveil the unfortunate truth that mainstream propaganda wrongly glorifies the life of a soldier in combat. Owen employs the use of startling and memorable imagery to depict the unforgettable account of a faction of soldiers searching for a place to rest after combat to demonstrate how the media and other forms of propaganda falsely represent combatants. The soldiers are "bent double, like old beggars" which is contrary to
