Sandwiches and the Theories of Aristotle

As a single mother of 2, living in a small apartment with a large monthly rent in downtown Houston, having to decide what to do with the 10 extra sandwiches each day is a tough moral decision for Anne. She has all these sandwiches that she can keep to feed her children for a couple days, she can give them to the homeless people of Houston that have no other source of food, or she can do some mix of both of those solutions. All she knows is that she has to get rid of the sandwiches somehow to keep her boss happy. Throwing them in the trash is absolutely not an option, she has hungry children at home, and there are far too many hungry homeless people that could benefit from these leftover sandwiches. She is constantly struggling between whether she should keep the sandwiches to feed her children, or help feed the homeless population of Houston. She turns to the studies of Aristotle, who selfishly believes that people should do good because it makes them feel good, and Mill, who altruistic

Introduction Stoicism was first practiced as a philosophical movement during the Hellenistic period. It is unknown as what started the origins of stoicism. Considering the philosophy and life of Stoicism, it is the term of making decision about how to approach life. It is as a way of life. Philosophy is also defined as a kind of practice or exercise in concerning what you believe. Only if you do it will you become a sage. However, if you don't, you will be a slave. They claimed that it is impossible for women to accomplish this practice. The Stoic theory God is immanent throughout the whole of creation and directs everything down to the finest detail. Under this guise, God is also called 'fate.' It is important to realize tha

Recycling: Paper or Plastic?

"Paper or plastic?" This is a question that millions of Americans are faced with daily, whether when buying groceries at a local supermarket or packing a lunch to take to work. Debates regarding this million-dollar question have been around for decades, as enthusiasts for both sides have strong and firm advantages and disadvantages that strengthen each case. Paper bag advocates argue that plastic bags negatively harm our environment and ecosystems, while those in favor of plastic bags refute that because of their recyclable nature, plastic bags are actually more beneficial to our earth. Although I do see the unsustainable use of both the paper and the plastic bag in today's society, I definitely believe that when recycled and used in moderation, plastic bags are not only more convenient than paper bags, but that they are much more environmentally friendly to our Earth, promoting a much more sustainable future for generations to come. Most people who advocat

Characters in Tom Jones by Henry Fielding

Moments by chance can sometimes act as the best forms of judgment in determining one's legitimate sense of character. It is in the most controversial and unpredictable occurrences that both the true nature, and the true faith of an individual are tested. In the novel Tom Jones by Henry Fielding, both Mr. Allworthy and Mrs. Deborah Wilkins are faced with an extremely unpredicted surprise: finding an abandoned infant in the bed of Squire Allworthy. However, the two opposite responses to the unplanned circumstance vividly depict the differing personalities of each character, as Fielding represents Allworthy as a man of true principle, valuing human life, whereas Wilkins is disgustingly illustrated as a narcissistic nag. Mr. Allworthy's initial impression is definitely one of a good natured and religious man, in contrast to the dehumanizing and offensive attitude of Mrs. Wilkins. Having just had supper with his sister and "having spen[t] some minutes on his knees-a custom which he never broke through on any account," Mr. Allworthy suddenly and randoml

Niccolò Machiavelli and The Prince

It is quite odd that people would question whether Niccolò Machiavelli himself was a Machiavellian. Best known as the author of "The Prince", his infamous writings have become an established milestone in the history of Western thought; as the word 'Machiavellian' suggests – he himself has come to be regarded as the typical proponent of a hard-nosed power politician. Although Machiavelli is known for preaching ways to become a Machiavellian, he himself may not be classified himself under the term because of how the word 'Machiavellian' is used today. Born on May 3, 1469, in Florence, Italy, Niccolò Machiavelli was a diplomat for 14 years in Italy's Florentine Republic during the Medici family's exile. When the Medici family returned to power in 1512, Machiavelli was dismissed and briefly thrown in jail. He then wrote "The Prince", a handbook for politicians on the use of ruthlessness, selfishness, and being cunning, which ultimately inspired the term "Machiavellian" to be created and establishing Machiavelli as the "father of modern political theory." Though it was not the best of times for him, it gave Machiave

Career Research Essay

"Creative without strategy is called 'art', creative with strategy is called 'advertising'", claims Jef l. Richards. I heartily agree with his favorable comments on advertising. Now with the development of technology there are more and more digital products requiring a certain media form to present in public. Media provides a helpful stage for commercial products or activities to better perform its advantages to audiences. I am the person who would rather watch advertising than enjoy a movie or TV drama. The desire to be an adman has crept up on me unexpectedly when thinking about what major will fit me to attend my future career. I need to accomplish my goal through education. In order to be a professional Adman in the advertising field, gaining education, enhancing job skills, and getting the internship experience are the most important factors that will contribute to my career path successfully. Miranda vs. Arizona and Criminal Procedure

Throughout the history of the United States, there have been numerous Supreme Court cases that have had a major impact on the American society. Because of how the United States' government is structured, the Supreme Court is able to wield tremendous power on the laws of the land. This was never more evident than during the "Warren Court" of the mid 1900s. During this era, the Court adamantly looked to expand judicial power more than it ever had before. This meant going beyond just a ruling of constitutionality and entering into the arena of lawmaking. A textbook example of this expansion took place during the Miranda v. Arizona case of 1966. Once the Court's decision was handed down, the fundamental tenants of criminal procedure were forever changed in America. On the morning of March 13, 1963, the Phoenix Police Department arrested Ernesto Miranda and charged him with kidnapping and raping an 18 year-old girl. Although the victim could not positively identify Miranda as her

While Mala, the female character in the story The Third and Final Continent, has no jobs; Mrs. Sens, the female character in the story Mrs. Sens, works as a nanny in her house taking care of Eliot. Mr. and Mrs. Sens do not have any children. Although the Sens couple have been married for years, their relationship are more like friends than couples. There are two evidences which illustrates their relationships: Firstly, they do not call their name or nickname; they called one another Mr. Sens and Mrs. Sens. To show that we are polite to stranger, we usually called one another by their last name. However, Mr. Sens and Mrs. Sens has been married years already, therefore we can see that their relationship is not as close as couples should be like. Secondly, when Eliot wants to take pictures of them together, they didn't hold hands and put their arms around each other's waists. Compare to the

Remorse in The Scarlett Letter

In many stories there is always that one character that changes throughout the course of the book. In The Scarlet Letter the main character that changes is Hester. Throughout the book Hester changes from being an arrogant, unremorseful woman to a nicer and helpful woman. Even though Hester seems to have learned a lesson from her sin and punishment, has she really changed from her sinful ways? If so, is she going to leave for Europe with Dimmesdale? Towards the beginning of The Scarlet Letter, we see Hester being punished publicly for the sin she has committed with Dimmesdale. In chapter 2, Hawthorne writes, "He laid his right hand upon the shoulder of a young woman, whom he thus drew forward; until on the threshold of the prison-door, she repelled him, by an action marked with natural dignity and force of character, and stepped into the open air as if by her own free will." (Pg 35) A few paragraphs later, Hawthorne also writes, "And never had Hester Prynne appeared more

Romeo And Juliet - Significant Secondary Characters

Sir Capulet, Tybalt and Friar Lawrence, secondary characters but important and change the course of the play of Romeo and Juliet. The secondary characters of the play greatly contribute to the plot, character development and the themes of the play. The secondary characters are vital to the play. Tybalt, Friar Lawrence and Capulet greatly contribute to the plot. Tybalt contributes to the plot by killing Mercutio. When Tybalt kills Mercutio it causes Romeo to retaliate and kill Tybalt, this results in Romeo being exiled from Verona when the prince arrives. Benvolio proves this when he speaks to the Prince upon his arrival, "Tybalt, here slain, whom Romeo's hand did slay." (III.i.160). Friar Lawrence contributes to the plot by sending Friar John to send the message of Juliet faking her death instead of Balthasar who is unaware that Juliet is not actually dead. Only Balthasar arrives who tells Romeo that Juliet is dead and Friar John does not arrive at all. Friar John explains to

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix, better known as Sulla was born in 138 B.C. in Puteoli, a city near present-day Naples. He was born into a patrician family (this title was given to a wealthy upper class citizen of the Roman Republic). Sulla aspired to become a politician, and he began his political career in 107 B.C. under the command of King Gauis Marius. Sulla was in the shadows of the Roman political elite. It is assumed that his ability to climb the Roman political ladder was due in part to his family inheritances. Before becoming Roman dictator and during his early days as ruler, the Roman government suffered a sense of instability. There were series of political developments that arose in which, the aristocratic dominance and control over the Roman constitution was weakened. Sulla had an interesting dynamic with the women in his life. He would marry a total of five times. His first marriage was to his wife Julia. Then his second marriage would be with his love, Aelia. Sir Gawain - Epitome of a Knight

In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the Pearl Poet emphasizes certain aspects of a knight's appearance and mannerisms. According to the Knight's Code of Chivalry ("Code"), the main components of a knight which pertain to this story are the obligation to obey those placed in authority, to guard the honor of fellow knights, to avoid deceit, to speak the truth, to persevere to the end in any enterprise begun, to respect the honor of women, to never refuse a challenge from an equal, and to never to turn [your] back upon a foe. Sir Gawain either already has all of these qualities, or he learns from his mistakes to learn them in the end of the poem. Therefore, Sir Gawain should be considered a knight even though he sometimes admittedly does the immoral thing because he always learns his lesson and will uphold the code in the future. The first group of these traits that occur selectively in Arthur's court-to guard the honor of fellow knights and to never refuse a challenge from an

Water Hardness

Water is the most essential substance needed for the existence of every organism. Water covers 70% of the earths surface and comprises 60% of the human body. It is needed for bodily function, agriculture, industries, entertainment, and hydroelectric power. Freshwater is not entirely pure. It must sometimes be treated due to pollution, bacteria, and unsafe levels of minerals. Its composition ranges from gases in the air two minerals and rocks and soils. Calcium and magnesium are the most abundant cat ions found in natural waters. These cat ions come from rocks like dolomite, gypsum, and limestone. The presence of ions contributes to what is called water hardness. Water hardness refers to the exact concentration of these ions. Hard water has a high concentration of cat ions and and ions. Therefore, soft water has a low concentration of cat ions and and ions. Water hardness is measured in molarity, parts per million, milligrams per liter, and grains per gallon. Although water may contain many different minerals, the hardness is usually reported in milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate. Water hardness is important to understand due to the complications it can cause when untr

Theories of Learning

Robert Sternberg theorizes that the three keys to successful intelligence are analytical, creative and practical intelligences. Each have their own strengths that are helpful in both a learning environment and a career. All three are purposeful and necessary for a balanced successful intelligence. Sternberg's intelligence theory helps to explain the different aspects of the human mind and how it works in unique ways. "Sternberg's discussions on intelligence are very different from a lot of others because he appears to think that other than a static score, intelligence is somewhat malleable and should take into consideration things like culture, gender, age, parenting style, personality, and schooling."  (Wilson) The first aspect of Sternberg's theory is the analytical intelligence. Analytical intelligence is required to "solve problems and to judge the quality of ideas" (Sternberg) It emphasizes memorization and the ability to answer according to a teacher's expectations. Vengeance in Beowulf

Imagine two siblings, a little boy and a young girl, playing together on the soft carpeted floor of a typical family living room. The girl accidentally knocks over the tower the boy was making with Legos, thus angering the boy and giving him an incentive for revenge on the girl. He hits her, starting a cycle of vengeance. The girl, who is now angered at her brother, tells her mom and gets the boys Legos taken away. She feels satisfied because she has been granted her revenge. The boy now has no toys and is sitting in the living room watching his sister play with her Barbie, naturally he will want his revenge and try to get her toy taken away. Revenge and vengeance are prominent themes in Beowulf. While the example above is merely represented with children, you can only imagine what severe depths it can reach in larger proportions. "Revenge proves its own executioner" (John Ford, The Broken Heart). The first representation of the theme of revenge in Beowulf, is shown in the relationship between Grendel and the Danes. The continuous cycle of revenge is begun by the evil beast Grendel. Grendel descends fr

Chiropractic Care of Organic Diseases

When one's life is on the line, and one's health is in danger, who do should be trusted? When it comes to children's diseases being treated by proven methods or unproven myths, which should be chosen? Alternative medicine offers a dangerous and unproven way around medical doctors and normal treatments and medicines, but is it worth it? According to most medical doctors and good chiropractors, it is bad practice and just not worth it. People start to believe that these treatments work through a few researched topics, one being the placebo effect. Dishonesty in chiropractic plays a big role, in diagnosing patients and over treating them just for a little extra cash. Even fellow chiropractors disapprove of some practices they have seen or heard of. It seems they do not agree on methods being used because of lack of proof that they work. Lastly, some doctors make it known that chiropractic care for anything other than an actual spinal injury is not recommended. There is good reason why pe

Poetry Explication - I can not remember all the times

"I cannot remember all the times.." the black eyes, bruises, and broken bones effected my life. A decent memory of what use to be the normal day-to-day life. Sad, alone, fearing every move, learning to never talk to someone who he may think is a threat. Even some, he may say is a threat just to show how much he "loves" you. Jo Carson describes in her poem a man who abused his wife, she talks about the bruises and broken bones he left, the scars that people may not be able to see from first glance. This poem isn't asking for pity or sadness, it's almost like a warning. A warning that this does happen to women, it can happen to anyone. She ends the poem with a warning to women of what to do if put in the situation. The woman she talks about in the poem is Jo Carson her self. She tells her readers about what she went through because people are more likely to listen to someone who's been through it rather than someone who is just speculating. I've read many stories, li

When he was finished he got a small car and the laid down on his side and started rolling it along the tracks and saying voom, voom as he pushed the car. He played by himself for a while moving from one side of the track to the other. Another child came over and tried to take his car away, Garr

The Sino-Japanese War

The nineteenth century proved to be a turning point in the relationships between China, Japan and Korea. Their histories had already crossed paths multiple times, and power struggles were creating pressure among the three East Asian states. The Sino-Japanese War changed the future of these countries and ultimately set a standard for how their relationships would develop. The year of 1894 marked huge changes for these three Asian powerhouses. China's refusal to incorporate Western-style ideals into their society was creating enemies, Japan was plotting their advances into Korea, and Korea was struggling to gain independence from China. In the beginning of the nineteenth century, China was falling from its pedestal. Though they had succeeded the Ming Dynasty, the now-tenured Qing were losing steam. China no longer boasted a large portion of world production, a terrible drought had severely impacted the land, and rapidly growing empires surrounding the Chinese nations began to spring up. The ideals of Christianity and Western styles were pushing themselves into China's borders, to their d

A Special Place to Me - The Woods

The woods to me is a place of peace and harmony between nature and the world, a place to escape from it all and relax. The visual of the wood is like an oil painting hanging on the wall, but there is more to it than the artist may show. There are 30ft tall trees as far as the eye can see, animals who call this wonderful place home, a wide arrangement of flowers of different size and colors, and many different plants that line the floor of the woods. The fall leaves as they change color from green to an orange color, the change in grass color to a dull, grayish color. The sounds of the woods are a symphony of music that fuses together in harmony to create a peaceful melody. There's angry squirrel fussing because someone stole his nuts, a cricket chirping after a bad joke, armies of birds having a singing competition so see whose voice is more beautiful, the howl of the wolf to the distance, and the frogs chirping to find their mate. But there is the two sounds that ruin the song during the cold months and they are; the frightening sound of gun fire scaring away the birds, and the

Technology and Broadway

Author and philosopher Aldous Huxley once said, "Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means for going backwards" ("Aldous Huxley Quotes"). This brings up an interesting question in terms of theatre technology. Is technology helping serve theatre, or is it a hindrance on the art form? The argument is fairly new, however in recent years; there have been a lot of shows to pull from for the ineffectiveness of technology. In the Italian and English Renaissances, technology was very new. In the late 14th century, Italian engineers began to design innovative equipment for spectacles produced in the churches. One invention was the paradiso, a system of riggings and winches by which an entire chorus of angels was built to descend from the clouds (A History of Italian Theatre). New variations of Roman and Greek stage machinery were used as well. The use of a periaktoi, a triangular scenic piece that rotates, was brought back to the theatre. Italian stage
