Prejudice Revealed in To Kill a MockingbirdMany people in today's society often live with prejudice in their lives. According to Webster, prejudice is defined as an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand, without knowledge, thought or reason. In the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird," the evils of prejudice as well as the negative consequences that occur in the city of Maycomb because of this intolerance are explored. Prejudice about people's social status is demonstrated when Aunt Alexandra does not allow Scout to play with Walter Cunningham. She views his family as poor and as a lower class of white people. In her words, "...they're good folks, but they're not our kind of folks. " Another family, the Ewells, are considered "white trash " because they are poor and uneducated. The townspeople of Maycomb have certain beliefs about how people shoul |

Influential ClassicalismAs a rule, Classicism can be characterized as an issue in writing, visual workmanship, music, or construction modeling that draws on the styles of antiquated Greece and Rome, particularly fifth- and fourth-century b.c.e. Athens and late Republican Augustan Rome. The term can be confounding, in light of the fact that it has tackled numerous different implications. It can allude to a general stylish portrayed by clarity, style, and symmetry, or to a style that is by and large considered epitomizing enormity or flawlessness. Case in point, the vast majority would distinguish the Boston Pops as entertainers of "Classical music" or John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath as an issue "Classic" of American writing, despite the fact that they have little to do with relic. Varieties on the term, in the same way as neoclassicism, can besides allude to a particular school or style in a specific time period. Despite this perplexity, the term is still important in depicting particular styles and inspirati |

Dynamics of a GroupthinkIn my paper, I will attempt to identify the roles, tasks and dynamics of groupthink. Harris and Sherblom (2005) define small group communication as "the transactional process of using symbolic behavior to achieve shared meaning among group members." (p. 4). The dynamics of working in a group can be a learning tool as the group learns to work together, communicate, collaborate, support, take on responsibility, follow direction, influence and lead in the direction in which the group is to achieve the goal or task at hand. Why do people join groups? An individual may join a group for various reasons and according to Harris and Sherblom there are four general reasons; interpersonal interaction, personal need for affiliation, meaning or identity. Being a part of a group is dependent on each member to being willing to work toward a common goal regardless of whether they agree with it. It is the group leader's responsibility to choose a direction for the group and to delegate tas |

Lord of the Flies and The InheritorsMost human beings believe that we are sophisticated, just, and supreme of all other beings. But when we lose everything and become exposed and vulnerable, we can behave just like any cornered animal. Every person can do unmentionable things when threatened enough. Each person has a different view on what is right and wrong. This differs their threshold of what they are willing to do to get what they want. Even if someone believes that they would never kill or sabotage a person, they are still capable of it and in the right situation will, if they feel threatened enough or they will try to run from it. There is a term in psychology that describes this, called the fight or flight response. When in a dangerous situation, a person will receive a boost of adrenaline to help them either fight what is endangering them or to help the person escape from it completely. When this happens, specifically in the fight component of this response, there is perceived control. This perception of contr |

Prohibition in Turn of the ScrewOne of the most difficult and challenging aspects about "The Turn of the Screw"" is how frequently the characters in the novel present fragments of hidden secrets of the overall story. Indirect hints and information with the use of vague language, how the characters communicate with one another, and symbolism are manifest. The first fact to point out is the journal that the Governess keeps that allows her to present events in a way that will persuade her readers she is both sane telling the truth. The journey is interrupted, which impedes our ability to determine whether the events are or are not "real. " Her journal stops short of a definite conclusion. These interruptions suggest the story remains unresolved, where we are forbidden to know the whole truth. Because this story is set in the time of the Victorian Era, the society dictated harsh restrains on sexuality, especially female sexuality. Women were forced to repress their instincts in order to be "lady-like. " This contributes |

Nickel and Dimed by Barbara EhrenreichThe book Nickel and Dimed was by Barbara Ehrenreich was a phenomenal read, it opened my eyes to the dark corners of the world that are so close yet so far from me. Throughout reading the book one thought consistently ran through my head. The book showed the idea that workplaces can pose hardships to the employees that are physical and even mental to a point. Even a often regulated happy restaurant, where the employees are only smiling, poses a threat to the workers of unseen danger. The customer over the counter would never know the hardships the employee faced only to serve them a burger, french fries and the abominable soda. In the recent few months the affordable health care act, also known as Obamacare passed legislation. Obamacare, providing health insurance to people who need it and are unable to pay for it. During the publication of the book if someone was injured off the job they would be facing thousands and thousands of dollars in medical bills. Today that same exact person |

Puritans and Sin in the Scarlet LetterGuilt is a common feeling for everyone. Guilt makes one feel unworthy, and embarrassed for their actions. This feeling stands as a prominent symbol in the novel The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This novel focuses on the Puritans and how they classify and deal with sin. The puritans are a group of people who arrived in America in the early 1600s and settled in Massachusetts Boston. They are religiously inclined and use religion in all aspects of life including the court system. The bible states, "he [that adulteress] destroyeth his own soul"(6.32 Bible). This quote plays an important role in this book because the main characters, Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale, are adulteress. Using this, Hawthorne can describe the way Puritans deal with sin. Hawthorne's universal belief that guilt endures until penance is made is delineated by the way in which puritans deal with guilt. Hester Prynne, a main character, plays the role of a sinner from the beginning of |

Christopher Columbus and an Indigenous PeopleChristopher Columbus' expeditions are well known for opening the door for cultural interaction between the Old and New Worlds. Understanding that at the time colonization was procured around the spreading of the Christian faith and international trading, many fail to acknowledge his impact on the native populations. Many indigenous people were stepped on, taken for granted, and unwarrantedly sacrificed – all under the justification of Christianity and commerce, as a means of expansion. Christianity is a missionary religion that directs followers to spread the faith, and Columbus intended to do just that. Made very clear from his, somewhat cloudy, journal entries, he makes it apparent that the natives "would be better freed [from error] and convert |

Alcohol, Tobacco and Prenatal DevelopmentTo have the chance to be pregnancy is a tremendous time in the expected mother's life. It is very critical for them to have as much of a healthy pregnancy as possible. It is imperative for the mother to avoid anything that could cause harm towards them or the baby. Staying clear of chemicals, toxins, alcohol, smoking, and among other things is essential. Becoming aware of what goes into the mother's body before and during, the pregnancy will have a direct link to the prenatal development of the baby. Tobacco and alcohol are among the many threatening factors for pregnant women. Tobacco exposure around the pregnancy can raise the chances of having a miscarriage or premature labor, but the foremost danger is a delay in fetal growth. The vast amount of chemicals in cigarettes is devastating to unborn babies, increases the levels of carbon monoxide in the mother's bloodstream and decreases how much oxygen the baby receives. The oxygen is sent less effectively to the baby due to the |

Biography of D. W. GriffithD. W. Griffith was born in Kentucky, in 1875. His father was a wealthy southern farmer. During the war between North and South, he took the side of the Confederates, after the defeat Griffith's family became poor. In 1882, the year of Griffith's father dies, and after his death is that he is bankrupt. Only one person who supported family was older sister Mattie. She worked as a teacher, and gave Griffith his education. Mattie taught Griffith literature by reading; Charles Dickens, Frank Norris, Alan Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, William Shakespeare. English literature of the period in England, as well as in America, was inspired with Victorian morality, and this affected the later style of Griffith. That's why all his films give the aesthetics characteristic of Romanticism and early realism. Sentimentality, all this is very strongly felt in Griffith's work. He always referred to the literature and human psychology. Griffith was one of the first directors who managed capturing th |

Young, Black Men: An Endangered SpeciesEven in the 21st century, racial discrimination and stereotyping continues to exist. Most minorities experience racial discrimination. However, Black men are more likely to be victims of police violence, racial hate-crime violence and urban gang violence than any other major ethnic group; it should also be known that homicidal deaths contribute to lowered life expectancy for African American males (Harper, 2009). Furthermore, Black males have the highest rates of murder in the United States compared to other male ethnic groups. Black men are affected by the issue of racial discrimination and stereotyping throughout every aspect of life. They rarely receive quality education. Our young, black men are stereotyped as lazy and unwilling to work. Therefore, they are left unprepared for college and the workforce. Many experts refer to this group of people as an endangered species because America is losing our young, black men at an alarming rate to violence, the criminal justice system and m |

The Journey of Apocalypse NowThe course of history has been altered greatly by triumphs of war and great defeats in war. Tracing back to hunting for food and preying of lesser forms of nature, war has always been a tactical test of wit and strategic knowledge. However, with modern technology's rapid progression through the twentieth century, war has become more of an arms race and an advanced-equipment contest. The Vietnam War saw the extremities of these two poles of combat – the American's daunting amount of weaponry, mobilization and chemical warfare; and the Viet Cong's strategic genius and usage of primitive arsenals. Throughout Apocalypse Now, the elements of war and weaponry that Captain Willard and his crew encounter deteriorate from modern artillery and chemical warfare to more primitive and ancient methods of attack and defense. Willard and his crew-mates play witness to this reversion as they venture into Cambodia in search of General Walter E. Kurtz. The decline in military technology and effecti |

Voices of American PovertyThe American Way of Poverty: How the Other Half Still Lives is a novel written by Sasha Abramsky. In this novel he discusses the state of America's lower class, lower-middle class and the relatively new idea of America's working poor. He talks about how there are people in this country who have been promised the ideal of the American dream but upon attempting to pursue it have gotten stuck in a rut of endless debt and living to never having enough. He points out that though some people are earning upward of $50,000/year they are still living pay check to paycheck. These people have little to no support from the government and thus feel that they have no possibility of financial freedom. Abramsky talks about the turn of the economy in 2008 and the lack of government policy and planning in case of a situation such as the one that we are currently facing. Through claims he sets out to prove that the disparity of classes in America have not been this bad since the 1920's. Abramsky's The A |

The Viking Age - Finding the Oseberg ShipThe Oseberg ship is a Viking Age ship excavated from the Oseberg farm near Tønsberg in Norway. It is most significantly known for being, apart from the Gokstad ship recovered from Sandefjord, "without doubt the most spectacular vessel to have survived from the Viking Age "1, as it "surpasses all other finds from the Viking period "2. A beautiful example of historical Scandinavian shipbuilding design and fine artistic ability, it is not only a cultural artifact to appreciate in a museum but also an important archaeological find: not only as a ship but as a burial site, highly informative of its place in Nordic history. In this essay I will examine how it fits into its Viking Age context, and also what we can learn about the Nordic culture and history of the time, taking evidence from an archaeological perspective. The significance of the ship itself to the Viking people is evident. Ships were literally what defined the Viking culture, what allowed them to raid and pillage both d |

The 1867 New Congress and Civil RightsTo represent the South in at the conclusion of the war, Confederate generals and rebel leaders took to the stands in Congress. During the duration of the war, the Northerners controlled all of Congress, so when Southern Congressmen stepped up they were met with opposition. The slaves now were considered men not property, so instead counting as 3/5th a man they now counted as full people. This gave the South 12 more electoral votes, giving them more representation in Washington. Theoretically, the South could reunite with the Northern democrats, eventually taking Congress and pass laws that would virtually re-enslave blacks through the Black Codes. Johnson tried to veto the Freedmen's Bureau, but congress overrode his veto, grating Blacks with all privileges of an American Citizen to blacks. Fearin |

The Importance of Higher EducationIn the United States of America, education is a right and a privilege. In many third –world countries, people are not as privileged, as Americans are to receive an education. Nevertheless, among the list of many opportunities that this country has to offer to its people sits the right to receive education. Therefore, it is important to strive to obtain as much as possible out of educational resources, such as schools, colleges, universities, and so on. Without an education it is harder to excel and achieve success. With that being said, higher education, also known as postsecondary education, should be a high priority in the lives of those who wish to receive more opportunities and succeed in life. Tana Sanderson, author of "The Great Debate- Education vs. Experience" and Jan Eberly and Carmel Martin, authors of "The Economic Case for Higher Education" share the same sentiment regarding education. Thus, having a degree should continue to be a requirement for all who seek higher success. Experience without education is not worth much in the corporate world |

Samuel Johnson's Criticism of Paradise LostIt is a well-established view that Samuel Johnson's London presents the pastoral as a serene repose from the foul and pestilent metropolis.1 Such an interpretation is quite obvious. However, I believe that there may be further dimensions and greater subtleties to Johnson's construction of the rustic idyll than have previously been realized. In an essay published on the occasion of Dr. Johnson's 250th birthday, Mary Lascelles concludes that 'London has not the brilliance of its original, because it lacks the lightening flash of its irony'.2 Lascelles is arguably right to find irony in Juvenal's 'Satire III', and in sensing none in London, she aligns herself with the vast majority of those who have published their views on the poem. However, through a consideration of Johnson's possible Miltonic allusion, his politicization of the pastoral and his characterization of Thales, I wish to explore the idea that Johnson presents the rural/urban antithesis with a generally unrecogn |

Background and Future of RecyclingIntroduction As a society we humans have gone away from our true beings as nature. Humans have evolved to becoming the superior species. Humans have enclosed ourselves out of where we truly are a part of and made our own little world pretending that we dont live with the trees and animals. When in fact we do. Humans have gone from using what nature provides them to creating new organic objects to help them survive thinking that they dont need to rely on nature. Some humans are now realizing that we cant survive without nature and we need to respect and take care of it. One of the main concerns is recycling. Recycling can be very beneficial to society and the environment, but the actions that the society takes are what is going to make the change. Background Recycling is the process of reusing or transforming used materials into something new instead of throwing it in the trash (Reno & Alexander 2012). Nature offers a cheap service to humans, it breaks down organic matter such a |

A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. GainesAccording to Henrik Ibsen, "The strongest man in the world is he who stands most alone". In other words, what this quote means is that the strongest man is the most independent; individuals who do not need to rely on others. Individuals who stand alone are the ones who realize the strength within themselves and become powerful characters. This quote is valid because individuals who like to take actions on their own and accomplish their goals without caring about what any one has to say turn out to be the most successful. Two works of literature that support the validity of this statement are, A Lesson before Dying by Ernest Gaines and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck proves this quote to be true through conflict and characterization. In A Lesson before Dying the author uses conflict to show that a man who is mostly by himself in a difficult situation is stronger alone then accompanied. In the novel the protagonist Grant, struggles to make a convicted black man named Jeffe |

Case Study - Early Childhood DevelopmentAbstract Child development is a unique and complex process. In this paper we will be looking at the Physical development, Cognitive development, and Social Emotional Development of Anaya, a 2 year old subject, whom I chose for this study. This will be done by comparing it to the widely held expectations for what an average child might achieve within a given age range. We will also be looking at the major milestones and challenges attained by Anaya and how it related to her development. Early Childhood: Physical, Cognitive, Social and Emotional Development. Development of Anaya My baby cousin Anaya is a 2-year-old female, which I chose as a subject to study for early childhood. She lives with her parents, grandparents and his newborn, 2-month-old brother. She is born in an Indian – American culture, where two languages are spoken, Gujarati and English. Both of her parents work until 7 pm, she stays with grandparents and, her baby sitter. Anaya's day consist of staying home wi |

Example: American History Essay ExamIn 1789, George Washington became the 1st president of todays United States. He was also the 1st president under the Constitution. George Washington and the Federalists had a strong belief in this political philosophy, where the national government would have enough power in order to be respected and also feared in the U.S. With respect and fear came order. At first, this philosophy was a success, until the interference of the Democratic Republicans and Thomas Jefferson. This group feared the consolidation of central power, which would be at the expense of the states and the people. This group also believed in the revolutionary ideas of a limited government. The Constitution provided a map out, a guide almost, for the republic, but the administration of George Washington would use it in their own advantage and translate it into a working state. John Adams was elected president in 1796. An international crisis between the French and the U.S. was already in effect when Adams arrived in |

Destiny in Othello and Oedipus the KingAs in Oedipus the King, a major theme in Othello is man's inability to reliably distinguish between what seems to be and what; however, this shared theme of "uncertain vision" is treated somewhat differently in Othello than it is in Oedipus the King. Namely, first of all the reason behind the "uncertain visions" and the tragedy that ensue from one another is different in the two plays. In Oedipus it is the unavoidable clutches of destiny that cause the protagonists not to see what is going on behind their backs. In Othello however the reason both for the tragedy and the "uncertain vision" has a name, Iago. The second most important reason as to why the uncertainty is treated differently is the fact that Othello due to his temper might be able to see what is happening, but his "hot blood" does not let him do so. Oedipus on the other hand is being utterly objective and is doing all that he can to bring the investigation to an end even though it may have disastrous consequen |

From My Perspective - The Tragedy of 9/11I was almost seventeen and lived back home in Iran. My family and I were talking about how beautiful that summer was. My dad suddenly decided to turn on the TV and we stopped talking. We just watched the news that showed an aircraft crashed in to the World Trade Center. The building was appearing to be on fire and just a few minutes later the second plane hit, and it was immediately clear that it was no accidents. We were shocked and did not know what has happened exactly. We followed the news and watched the video that showed many people trying to get out of the building and they did whatever they thought necessary to survive. I saw people who tried to fling themselves from different floors of the building. It was very painful when I saw how two buildings collapsed. We did not have any family or friends in New York back at that time, but my mom and I were crying when we were watching the video of the crash from TV. We were so sad for all those who lost their loved ones. I was thinking |

Synthesis and Characterization of Cobalt AcetylacetonateABSTRACT Acetylacetone was added to dissociate Co(II) to form the pink ionic salt complex Co(II)(acacH)3. Hydrogen peroxide was introduced which effected deprotonation of acacH enol form to bidentate acac allowing a stronger, more stable ion, [Co(acac)3]- to form . Hydrogen peroxide also reacted to oxidize Co(II) to Co(III) which ended in the resultant compound Co(acac)3. 1 Melt range was employed to conclude if the expected product had been obtained and how pure it was by comparison to the pure product melt range of 210C - 213C.2 Ultraviolet and visible light spectroscopy was used to determine that the extinction coefficients lay within the defined range of 103 C 105.1 Infrared spectroscopy was utilized to conclude that the intermolecular bond activity was consistent with expected, pure Co(acac)3 bonds.13 Nuclear magnetic resonance was used to establish that the hydrogen atom interactions of the molecule were in the correct one to six (1:6) CH to CH3 ratio present in pure Co(acac)3 |

Judaism, the Qumran Library and the High PriestIntroduction The epistle1 to the Hebrews is explicit in its presentation of the High Priest motif of Jesus Christ. The authorship of Hebrews has been in dispute; while some hold to Pauline2 authorship others maintain that it was written by an unknown author.3 While this is not the place to dig into the argument, I agree with the view that the author is unknown and will therefore use the term 'the author' in this paper. The recipients of the book are said to be Christian Jews and not non- Christian or Essene priests as some posit but the position that it is written for non-Christian groups or Jewish/Essene priests is said to be scarcely tenable.4 I agree with the view that it was written for Christian Jews due to the following reasons stated by Gaebelein:5 1. The author has much to say about the worship of the tabernacle, the priests and the kind of sacrifices they offered, the covenant meant so much to the Jews. 2. Jewish worthies like Abraham, Moses, Joshua and a host of others |
