2013 Film Version of The Great GatsbyIn the beginning of the movie "The Great Gatsby" it starts with a flashing black and white Warner Bros Advertisement. I think that this is very effective, because it is introducing us the time setting of "The Great Gatsby" which was set in New York 1922.The constant flashing is very affective as it is mimicking the technology of movie filming during that time era. Technology was not as advanced as it is today, the lights would flash during the filming and they were all black and white. In the script the opening scene is written as "A Black Screen." The blackness is pierced by a single, pulsing green light...We drift, as if by boat, across a dark bay toward the light. Then, we hear a troubled voice." While during the actual movie there is a black screen, with old classic music playing in the background. Then there is a small silver light that flashes brightly, the small light is then enlarges to a bigger green light across |

Ethiopians and YemenHistorically speaking, the Ethiopians conquered Yemen and ruled it for seventy-two years, during which four kings ruled; Iryat, Abraha, Yaksum, and Masrooq. When Ethiopian rulers exercised severe oppression on the Yemeni people, Saif Ibn Dhi-Yazan, who was called Abu Murah, left Yemen towards Caesar, the King of the Romans, in quest of military support to put an end to both the Ethiopian reign and the Yemeni oppression. Although Caesar could appoint any of the Romans to rule Yemen under the sovereignty of the Roman State, Caesar was neither responsive to Saif nor interested in subjecting the Yemeni region. Then, Saif continued his travel to the destination of Al-Hirah, which was ruled by Al-No'man Ibn Al-Munthir. Al-No ˜man was appointed by Khosrau, King of Persia, to rule Al-Hirah and the appended land of Iraq. Arriving there, Saif explained to him the plight and suffering of the Yemeni nation under the grim tyrannical rule of the Ethiopians. Al-Munthir told him that he used |

My Father and MeThere was a time in my life when happiness wasn't an issue. I was as happy as could be, and I was very content with life. The days seemed to blend together as one good happy memory, but a series of memories that went all too fast. I had a opportunity that a lot of young people didn't get, the opportunity to have two active, and loving parents in my life. My parents were the best anyone could ever ask for because they genuinely loved me and my sister, and they protected us from any possible harm. They were fun-loving and enjoyed joking around, but when it was time to be serious they got quite serious. It seemed like I had a knack for getting into trouble since I was extremely hyper-active due to my ADHD (attention Deficit Hyper-Active Disorder). This also made it extremely hard to focus in school, and it still does to this day. The relationship my dad and I shared was like none other. I guess we blended so well because according to him I was just like him when he was my age. Regardles |

Edgar Allan Poe - Mood and ImageryIn a majority of Romantic writings many archetypes, contextual symbols, and imagery is used to connect the readers to the story on a more deeper, intellectual level. Edgar Allen Poe, in particularly, was notorious for his dark writings and depressing storylines. Using those symbols in his writings will more than likely require the audience to have to think about a specific scene, which they will find to benefit them in the long wrong; they will have a new favorite story. This short story, The Fall of the House of Usher, has a very dark mood which will be exposed as the audience is gradually sucked into the plot. It will be noticed that it doesnt slowly get darker as it goes on but cuts to the chase right away and gives the reader a general idea of the entire mood in the beginning. Authors have been known to use archetypals symbols in their writings to focus more closely on the universal patterns of human nature and to give more emphasis on any point he/she is trying to prove. The Benefits of Same-Sex Marriage"The battle over gay marriage has been waged for more than a decade, but within the last six months--since California legalized gay marriage and then, with a ballot initiative in November, amended its Constitution to prohibit it-the debate has grown into a into a full-scale war, with religious-rhetoric slinging to match" (Miller 570). Arguments both for and against same-sex marriage vary widely from person to person, but I believe same-sex marriage potentially benefits the American population in a multitude of ways. The three main reasons for legalizations of gay marriage in the United States: gay couples adopt children that would otherwise be in foster care, marriage is a freedom of expression and a right to all United States citizens as described by the Declaration of Independence, and revenue from gay marriage would help the state government financially. Every year in the United States, parent(s) and child protective services place hundreds, if not thousands, of children into foster care facilities. Parents give their children up to these facilities for many reasons. Some paren |

Christian Theology - Eternal SecurityIntroduction There have been many debates and arguments over scripture throughout the course of history. Some of which have led to bloodshed, separation, and despair. One such argument comes to mind; eternal security. Eternal security has been an endless debate (recorded since Augustine) over one's salvation and the guarantee into God's kingdom. This debate has been a significant road block in many lives in regards to faith and in one's trust in God's grace. Before any side should be taken with confidence, the shared dogmas must be stated to keep a firm foundation. Also, both arguments' supporting points and objections must be laid out. Through these two points, any Christian can take a side with confidence, while still looking at a brother or sister on the other side with love. This is critical to any Christ centered body, as it is so beautifully said by Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:13, "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." Characerization in A Worn PathIn the short story, "A Worn Path," by Eudora Welty, the concept of characterization examines the relationship between Phoenix and her grandson. Phoenix Jackson is a stock character in the story. A stock character is a stereotypical person whom audiences readily recognize from frequent recurrences in a particular literary tradition. She is a major character that does minor things. She represents a grandmother who is willing to do anything for her grandchild. Phoenix shows immense bravery throughout the story many times. She was pointed at with a gun and she took on other obstacles that an elderly person wouldn't. She is treated with disrespect as well, when she arrives at the clinic. Through her actions, we learn of Phoenix Jackson's devotion and love for her grandson to make him well. Phoenix Jackson emerges in "A Worn Path" as a character who endures obstacles that test the strength and stability of her body. Her character is portrayed as old Negro woman with no common sense. For example, "She was very old |

The Odyssey and O Brother, Where art Thou?Based on Homer's 'Odyssey,' the movie, O Brother Where Art Thou, deals with the picaresque adventures of Everett Ulysses McGill and his companions Delmar and Pete in 1930s, Mississippi. Sprung from a chain gang and trying to reach Everett's home to recover the buried loot of a bank heist, they are confronted by a series of strange characters. Among them are the Sirens, a Cyclops, bank robber George 'Baby face' Nelson, a campaigning Governor, his opponent, a Ku Klux Klan lynch mob, and a blind prophet, who warns the trio that treasure they seek shall not be the treasure they find, and foretells a few events, such as the "cow atop a hen house". Homer's epic poem the 'Odyssey' tells of a similar story; the poem mainly centers on the Greek hero Odysseus and his journey home after the fall of Troy. It takes Odysseus ten years to reach Ithaca after the ten-year Trojan War. In his absence, it is assumed he has died, and his wife Penelope with son, Telemachus, must deal |

Hamlet - The Dust of ManIn the play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Hamlet's father, the king, dies. His uncle, Claudius, marries his mother, the queen, to gain control of the throne. This troubles Hamlet very much, because his father has not been dead for even two months, and his mother has already moved onto another man, that man being his own uncle. Hamlet is visited by the ghost of his dead father, who informs Hamlet that he was killed by Claudius. Hamlet wishes to seek revenge on his uncle for the death of his father. He first pretends to go crazy, so that if anything were to happen to Claudius, he would be suspected the least. In his desire for revenge, Hamlet also shows an interest for death, starting from the point when he meets the ghost of his father. He soon comes to the conclusion that no matter how many great deeds a person does in his lifetime, he will end up the as everyone else, as dust. He disregards the fact that physical being is not everything and that a person can be remembered for his |

Messages to Saif Ibn Dhi-YazanMyth plays an extremely essential role in modern literature. It is used by poets, novelists and playwrights in varying degrees to indirectly draw attention to given situations in their societies, criticize and seek correcting them so as to improve their communities' conditions of life. Sometimes, it is used as a means of protection to writers who fear the oppression of ruling systems. It is employed to make verse laconic and brief. In Yemeni modern poetry, the use of myth contains the three aspects. In Yemen, a few poets have made use of myth in literature, in general, and poetry, in particular, at varying degrees. While some have tried hard to ascend the height of using myths in their poetry and thus partially succeeded, others failed in doing so. Yet, few others have made clever and skillful use of myth as the highest type of symbol; this is by first choosing suitable events, characters, or expressions, and second by blending that with their themes. Along with provoking the admira |

Tim Burton - Film AnalysisOften, women are portrayed in weak roles, and decisions are made for them by men. In Alice in Wonderland and Corpses Bride both Alice and Emily are initially put into uncomfortable situations due to their femininity. Both females encounter unwanted marriages, but are able to follow their true desires to be free. Both films portray a strong female lead to show that when put in difficult circumstances , women can over come their stereotypes and do what their hearts desire. At that time marriages were very different to what they are now. The societies conception of marriage was to arrange someone with similar status of social class. If you were poor you would most likely be married to someone of lower class, and if you were wealthy you would be arranged with someone of higher class. In Corpse Bride Victor and Victoria`s situation their marriage was arranged as a business deal. in exchange for something else. During the Victorian Era marriages were often considered business deals and few f |

Global Commodity Chains and the Food Industry1. Introduction "A commodity chain is an intermediate unit of analysis, bigger than the nation-state but smaller than the entire world-system. A commodity chain is the interrelated system of production processes and economic transactions that creates a commodity such as coffee, and brings it to the point where it is purchased and used by the final consumer." (Talbot, 2004, p.6). 1.1 The food industry relies on commodity chains to function globally. A commodity chain is very complex, especially within the food industry, and this complexity can sometimes cast a shadow over some products and their origin, giving some firms the ability to control these chains. The food industry is not the only industry to be governed by commodity chains, many other industries such as the silver industry, all raw material industries, textiles, construction materials and even substances such as cocaine are often involved in commodity chains. It is a process that firms use to collect commodities for future c |

Early African Art - Visual AnalysisEarly African art can be mysterious, magical and powerful. Hip pendant representing an Iyoba (Queen Mother), is a pendant made from Ivory, Iron and Copper (fig. 1). With a beige monotone color and little contrast, this piece gives a sense of unity. There was no known artist to tie this piece to, however it was thought that many servants of the "Queen Mother" made these pendants and wore them as a symbol of loyalty. The materials used being all metal, gives this piece not only a strong appearance but a stronger idea behind it as well. The color looks nude with these materials, which allows the viewer to not be distracted by anything but the concept and form. When the form and content work together they draw attention to the very center of this piece. The subtle cracks in the face are due to aging, however the two big diagonal lines in the center of the forehead along with the straight across vertical hairline make the content stand out more. The pendant is 93x8 cm and is abo |

Identity and Social NetworkingIntroduction Facebook is considered to be the world's largest Social Networking site of the 21st century. Over 1.23 billion people log onto Facebook monthly and 757 million networkers log in each day (The Guardian, 2014). Other sites such as Twitter and Instagram have also become a large part of most individual's social networking habits. In this case study I will analyse how it is possible for users of social networks to create their personal identities and how it may affect their self-esteem. Description A study has shown that more than fifty per cent of children have used online social networks by the age of 10 (The Daily Mail, 2014). The predominant social networking site is Facebook. It enables users to create individual profiles to which they add images of themselves, write statuses about their daily activities or their feelings and contact other Facebook 'friends'. However, Boyd and Ellison (2007) recognise that the word 'friends' used throughout social n |

Clarisse and Montag in Fahrenheit 451People love to talk about themselves. Generally, they are fascinated by who they are and what they do. Yet, in Fahrenheit 451, as Montag says, Clarisses favorite subject wasn't herself. It was everyone else and me. This suggests that Montag recognizes in Clarisse a unique individual, someone who genuinely cares about other people. It is this characteristic selflessness that attracts Montag to her and helps him recognize that there is more to his dystopic world than television and empty entertainment. Clarisse, therefore, is a catalyst that helps Montag change his opinion about himself in this world and causes him to re-assess the value of books. When they first meet, Clarisse impresses Montag with her inner peace and knowledge. Sh |

Good and Evil in To Kill a Mockingbird"Life is neither a good nor an evil: it is a field for good and evil,"" states the Roman philosopher, Seneca. This idea of the coexistence of between good and evil is still heavily valued. To this day, there is much evidence illustrating this idea. For example, Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird takes the reader on a journey of exploring the moral nature of human beings and discovering what it is that makes people the combination of good and evil that they are. The moral voice of this novel is portrayed by Atticus Finch, who has understood and experienced evil while continuing to believe that there is goodness in all humans. Atticus understands the complexity of humans, and the concept that no human is solely good or evil. On the other hand, the rest of Maycomb shares mutual values, generally pertaining to racism, which is in opposition to everything Atticus believes in. Atticus tries to teach his two young children, Scout and Jem, many moral lessons to show them that not everythin |

The True Essence of the JihadJihad is an Islamic term referring to a religious duty of Muslims. In Arabic the term 'Jihad' refers to 'striving' or 'exerting oneself', often referred as 'Holy War'. The concept of Jihad was not widely known in the western world before the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. Since then, the word has been woven into what our media and government feed us along with notions of Terrorism, Suicide Bombings, Hamas, Al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, and now, Jihad. Jihad is perceived by non-Muslims as the holy war which naturally implies some military actions targeting the elimination or defeat of all enemies of Islamic faith and often associated with certain extremist movements that use military methods of struggle to achieve their goals which they attempt to justify by some sacred reasons in order to pretend that they are acting in accordance with the will of Allah (God). The beauty of Jihad is hidden behind the supposed meaning which is " |

The Process of LeadershipThe aim of the present paper is to provide an analysis on leadership. According to Bolden (2004), defining leadership may be complex since it deals with various processes. Leadership is a procedure that allows a person to control and coordinate a particular group (Barnett, 2010). Furthermore, leadership adopts different approaches to attain its main goals. Depending on different views, there are numerous classifications that cope with it. However, this project is based on Kurt Lewin's categorisation. Therefore, three types of leadership will be mentioned and commented on: (a) Authoritarian or Autocratic Leadership, (b) Participative or Democratic Leadership, and (c) Delegative or Laissez-Faire Leadership (Cherry, 2006). Bolden (2004) claims that leadership represents a phenomenon that involves different processes such as personal, social or organisational. Therefore, leaders have to fulfill different abilities in their attempt to be in charge of a group. Moreover, there are three elem |

Lost Generation in The Sun Also RisesThe novel opens with an epigraph by Gertrude Stein: "You are all a lost generation." This refers both to those who lost their lives in the First World War, and also to those who lost their moral and spiritual compass. However, one hundred years ago, the First World War brought the people not just grief, death and suffering, but, as paradoxical it may sound, gifted to civilization such phenomenon in literature as "Lost Generation". "Lost Generation" - the term that emerged in the period between the two Wars (the First and the Second World Wars) and referring/ed to young soldiers who fought between 1914 and 1918 , and who returned home mentally or physically disabled" (Sarason, 1972: 3) The brightest representative of the "Lost Generation" the great Ernest Hemingway popularized this term in his autobiographical novel "The Sun also Rises". The Catcher in The Rye - PhoniesIn "The Catcher In The Rye," by J.D. Salinger, the main character, Holden, is constantly calling others phonies. I believe that Holden uses this name to call people he meets or knows because he can't accept reality. The reality is that Holden cant accept the success of other people which is a reason why he might consider them phonies. Holden refuses to acknowledge and fix the way he is living life at the moment. He believes everything that is happening is a phase which shows Holdens lack to face reality. Holden is wrong for judging others because his only purpose is to make himself feel better about himself. If he considers people who aren't perfect and have bad habits as phony, he is one himself. Holden only calls other people phonies because he lacks the ability to face the truth. To begin with, Holden is a very judgemental person, which makes him a phony since he points out the imperfections and faults of others to make him feel better about how he is living life. Love in Much Ado About NothingLove is among the most popular topics in literature. The quote "Love is a triumph of imagination over intelligence," explains the most simple love, love at first sight. Most people falls in love with an outline of a certain someone, though after getting to know them, truly falling in love with heart and soul is for certain. In the play Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, although imagination guides love in the beginning, intelligence plays a more important role in love at the end of the play. Claudio's love for Hero transfers from imagination to intelligence after Hero's innocence is proven. Hero's imagination for love remained until her name was cleared. The love relationship between Beatrice and Benedick starts with imagination, but intelligence progresses their love. Claudio falls blindly in love with Hero at first sight, with the help of his suspicious nature and fierce imagination. Then he truly falls in love with Hero as her chastity is revealed. Columbia - Emerald of South AmericaHistorically, Colombia has been overshadowed in global diplomacy and economics. Its main claims to fame come from its national hero Simon Bolivar and being beaten by the United States when Colombia refused to allow the United States to take control of Panama and build the Panama Canal. Regional economic powers like Brazil and Argentina eclipsed Colombia. Other nations like Peru and Venezuela upstaged it on the global stage. However this is no longer the case. Brazil and Argentina have struggled in the new millennium while Peru's economy has stagnated. Venezuela without its talismanic firebrand, Hugo Chavez, has quickly fallen out of the global picture. Venezuela through political moderation and fiscal conservatism has deftly navigated its way to economic triumph in South America. It would be remiss not to mention that Venezuela's has been lucky both economically and politically. It capitalized on burgeoning oil prices and new markets during the 2000's, while avoiding the political con |

Application Letter - LeadershipQuite honestly, I thoroughly enjoy when people ask me to describe myself and my experiences. Not because I like to talk about myself or my accomplishments, but rather because most people are surprised at the attributes I acquired at a young age. Characteristics that I assumed would be common in people my age, I am told by others are very extraordinary, making talking about myself an enjoyable experience. I come from a long line of role models and a legacy of leaders in my family and it must have influenced my DNA. Growing up, I was fascinated with stories around our dinner table of many of my families accomplishments. One great grandfather being the founding member of the Chicago Yacht club as well a successful builder, while the other the head of sales at the Continental Can Company. Stories of my grandfathers, one as the Vice President of Sales at Plantronics, and the other the head of Social Security for the State of Missouri. Finally, my father is a Chief Sales and Marketing officer for a software company. Most actions that come naturally to me seem to be traits that others aspire to. Among those traits, one of the |

Short Story - The Graduate CampoutGraduation was two weeks away and for the majority of the students it was hard to stay focused on school work. The amount of emotions flowing in the students' bodies was unreal, almost so powerful to take over their bodies. Outside there was the smell of fresh cut grass, the sound of birds chirping and you could see the swing on the rusty old play structure outside of the abandoned children's wing at the infirmary swaying. This play structure has been closed down for almost two years, after a student was found dead hanging from the monkey bars. At the Academy, there is a ritual that the graduating class has to spend at least two nights at the old infirmary. Rumour has it that the young man with the dreads who worked there, severely murdered three children that went missing over the course of the last four years. I overheard the janitor at the Academy later mention that he found a death note, with multiple names including the dead children and my brother's name, in a professor's des |
