America's Rise to Superpower

During the late 1800s, the fact that America had become a world power became very evident. Events around the world and at home had changed the nation and forced it to branch out and become more active abroad. Three main reasons for this were: the spreading of other nations power and influence, traditions and values that had been part of America since the beginning, and the need for raw materials, and more importantly, economic markets around the world. America took on the role of a much more imperialistic nation than it had been in the past. Nations around the world were becoming more imperialistic and straining to spread power and influence to new lands. In a way, America may have felt pressure to follow suit. With other countries dominating larger areas in new locations, America needed to do the same to compete. It was a sure bet that America would be at risk of losing power and influence if other countries like Japan, Germany, and Russia were gaining it across the globe. The United

Blanche DuBois - An Unsympathetic Character

A Streetcar Named Desire made its Broadway debut in 1947. It's shocking scenes, and forbidden themes were, although avant-garde, extremely well received by both the public and press. With it came the legendary characters of Stanley Kowalski, an ape like man married to Stella DuBois, a southern girl raised on a plantation in Mississippi. The most famous, or perhaps infamous, was Blanche DuBois, the deranged sister of Stella, who comes to live with her sister is New Orleans. She arrives in disgust at the conditions that her sister lives in while propagating her proper lifestyle. She is incessantly needy, and while Stella is willing to serve her every whim, her husband becomes fed up with her requests. As the story progresses she falls deeper and deeper into her fantasies until she eventually is sent to a mental hospital. Blanche DuBois is portrayed as an unsympathetic character in A Streetcar Named Desire by Tenness

Teenagers in the 1950's and 1960's

Teenagers as a societal group didn't really exist until the 1950s - after the Great Depression and World War II eras. Once they became prominent in society, teenagers essentially controlled popular culture in the 50s and 60s. Often associated with sex, drugs, and rebellion, teenagers tend to be viewed upon with a disapproving stigma by adults. Throughout suburbanization, the young teenagers began to find their voice in society, through which they established themselves as an ubiquitous age group in America. Prior to the second world war, teenagers were considered "young adults" and treated as just that: with the responsibilities of an adult like jobs and draft participation but without the freedoms that came with adulthood like the right to vote. With the new easy access of the automobile came road trips with peers and drive-in movies and restaurants. With seemingly limitless boundaries due to the popularization of the automobile, teenagers began to experiment with sexuality and pushing the boundaries, frustrating parents and angering elders. Teens also began to turn towards a pro-integration stance with the grow

City of God - Metaphysical Post-Modernism

City of God is a novel with very little fluidity, lineation, or clarity - as was intended by its author, E.L. Doctorow. How, then, should one proceed in analyzing the themes in a novel with no storyline? Rather than tediously go through every theme Doctorow offers in his writing, focusing on the overall style of the novel might be a better way to approach the work. Often regarded as a post-modern author, Doctorow tends to show a sarcastic take on metaphysical themes in his novels, especially prevalent in City of God. Growing up, Doctorow lived with a "humanist, radical, and Jewish" family in which the "supernatural was not taken seriously" (qtd. in Eichelberger 82). One can assume Doctorow's advanced scientific reasoning and theorizing he so often writes about is at least partially due to the fact that he graduated from Bronx High School of Science, not coincidentally like the main character of the novel - Everett. His background translates almost seamlessly to his

Night - Horrors of the Holocaust

In the novel "Night," by Elie Wiesel, the horrors of the holocaust are illustrated by someone who experienced them first hand. As a survivor of the holocaust, he endured many challenges and presents them to his readers through this very moving and tragic novel. The main character of the book, Eliezer, was confronted with horrific trials that conflicted him mentally and emotionally. Thousands of Jewish citizens were deliberately killed within these concentration camps, and Eliezer was surrounded by these sickening activities. He struggled to maintain his faith in god and a compassionate human race. It is unquestionable that he was faced with, and put through, terrible experiences that changed his life forever. One of the main symbols within the novel is simply the symbol of night. The author makes clear to the fact that the most dreadful events take place during night-time, like the night they were transported to Auschwitz, for example. To a man of faith, night-time and darkness represent a world without God. This idea alone would have made these trying times much harder for Eliezer and his family as they were deeply religious. Tho

Modern-Day Sweatshops

About a decade ago, the truths behind textile sweatshop manufacturing finally became mainstream. While most of these truths were major issues on the terrible conditions workers faced day to day, some proved these factories are helpful to the countries they were in. The use of sweatshops is all over the world by different countries but the US based companies may be one of the largest abusers. Once this was brought about to the public, there was much controversy which split peoples opinions in many ways. Some were outraged and said it must be stopped at once. Others saw it as a great way to expand production cheaply and to help developing countries grow. There were some who said it is a great idea, but that there should be more regulations to the system. Textile sweatshops have been a mainstream issue for a long time and has become very controversial; some are against it while others support it, and still many say it just needs regulated. The U.S. Census Bureau today projected that on

Personality Disorders - Diagnosis Essay

"A personality disorder is an enduring pattern of inner experience and behaviour that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual's culture, is pervasive and inflexible. It has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time and leads to distress or impairment" (APA, 2013). Researchers have classified personality disorders into three different clusters based on their similarities. Cluster A comprises of paranoid, schizoid and schizotypal personality disorders and individuals who express these are said to behave in an odd or eccentric manner. Cluster B involves antisocial, borderline, histrionic and narcissistic personality disorders and persons with these disorders are seen to act in a dramatic, emotional and erratic style. Lastly, Cluster C entails avoidant, dependent and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. Individuals that demonstrate these types of disorder are identified to carry themselves in an anxious and fearful way. Personality

Employee Training and Development

The purpose of this study is to critically examine the assertion stating that training and development is widely supported by employers having a positive impact on the employees that will be analyzed using for and against arguments, considering the strength of evidence on both sides. The arguments are based on findings and research from online sources, books, journals, case studies and others. Starting with the 21th century, companies are experiencing major changes due to fast development of technology and knowledge, globalization and the e-commerce. Along with changes, companies have to take measures in retaining, attracting and motivating their work forces in order to keep the business successful. The number of the organizations which are embracing this "continual learning" along with other aspects of training and development as means of promoting highly skilled employees is a continuous growth and each year they are willing to spend considerable sums to keep fulfillin

Literature, Film and Social Stratification

One of the most important elements of social stratification is class. Class is defined as a category or group of persons having a definite status in society which permanently determines their relation to other persons or groups. Social class is very significant as it can provide a sense of belonging to specific people. Social relations, power, style of life, and property can determine the status of individuals in modern society. Social relations are constrained by economic structures in a sense that there are divisions set between the different groups in society today. There are barriers placed to prevent interaction among different people based on their class. These barriers cause a lesser understanding which leads to conflict amongst the people who identify with a specific class. The conflict causes specific identities to be formed between the working class, and the ruling class. The working class is defined as those who have to work hard to help themselves and their family

Professional Development Plan

Professional Introduction Growing up, I always knew I wanted to help others. I also knew I wanted to work in the legal and governmental realm. It was my life's intention to be an attorney. My undergrad courses introduced me to the wide range of careers and professions that existed within my realm of choice that reached beyond my career goal. This knowledge has caused me to pursue a career within human services. My specialization of choice is criminal justice. Because human services range reaches so far, I am unable to pinpoint a particular career goal. However, I am sure that I want to work with underprivileged people. Therefore, my current studies are pertinent to me pursuing a profession within the human services sphere. Professional and Academic Background I currently hold a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. During my undergraduate studies, I interned for a US Congressman. The internship allowed me the opportunity to obtain employment in the congressional office as an office m

Rights of the LGBT Community

On October 7, 1998 a twenty-one year old, homosexual, student at the University of Wyoming was murder. Matthew Shepard was abducted and taken to an isolated area east of Laramie. Matt was tied to a fence where two men brutally beat him with the rear end of a pistol he was left there to die. 18 hours later a bicyclist, who initially mistook Matt for a scarecrow, found him. Days later Matt died at the hospital with his family by his side (MSF). In 1993, Sharon Bottoms lost custody of her two year old son, Tyler, because she is a lesbian. The court ruled that Sharons homosexual conduct was immoral and illegal and renders her an unfit parent (Katz). The murder of Matthew Shepard and the discrimination Sharon Bottom endured raised awareness to the attacks on gay people. Although some people believe that a gay lifestyle undermines traditional values, all people deserve equal rights and treatment regardless of their sexual orientation. In 2008, the unbelievable happened, after same sex ma

The Technology of Prosthetics

Prosthetics have changed a lot these past years and through the advancements in technology, they can improve even more. Amputees, mostly soldiers who lost their limbs in combat, got their limbs cut off went through a very painful and unsafe procedure which most likely lead to death. Today things are much safer and amputees have a very high survival rate, and through technology, prosthetics today are very functional and lifelike. Advances in prosthetics have changed society for the better. Societies focus on improving prosthetics due to soldiers returning from war without limbs. According to Macrae, "More than 30,000 union soldiers and 40,000 confederate soldiers lost limbs between 1861 and 1865"" (Macrae 2). Basically he stated that since so many soldiers came back from war with the loss of a limb or limbs, it enforced the prosthetic industry to make and improve more prosthetics. James Edward Hanger, a confederate soldier who lost his leg, was given a wooden peg leg in replacement. The confederate soldier, unhappy and unsatisfied built and designed a new lightweight leg from old barrel staves (Macrae 4). In other words, Hanger was so unsatisfied

Power Restrictions and the Magna Carta

Ever since I entered high school I have hated the Student Council. The people that get elected are just a group of dictators that run the school the way they want to. Except when it's time to vote and they suddenly want to know what "the people want". Then, just as soon as they win, they turn around and do it again, and it is the same cycle continues. I have learned that Student Councils are like the King John's of the world, they don't want to deal with the people unless they want or need something from them. But instead of sitting and complaining like most people in the 21st century, the people in 1215 got up and revolted, fought, and finally got the change they wanted by creating the Magna Carta, and even after a great deal of time had passed, the inspiration and ideas from the Magna Carta were so powerful, that when the U.S. Constitution was created, framers used it to determine presidents control limits, the Amendment eight, and trial by jury from the charter. So, The Magna Carta being the first English written piece over power restriction laid down the foundation and path for constitutional liberty. The barons were overwhelmed with the

Nature in the Interpretation of Poetry

In "The Nature of Proof in the Interpretation of Poetry," Laurence Perrine's argument is that there is one meaning in a work of literature. He believes that an authors work does not have infinite interpretations it has a limited amount. He states this here "That a poem may have varying interpretations is a critical commonplace. That all interpretations of a poem are equally valid is a critical heresy," (Perrine 1). This quote is essentially saying that the idea of having infinite interpretations is wrong. This example is exactly what Perrine is arguing throughout his paper, he is disagreeing with the argument that poems have a vast amount of interpretations, which is the exact argument that T.S. Eliot has made in this quote "If it suits you that way, then that is all right with me." Yeats once wrote to a friend: "I shall not trouble to make the meaning clear- a clear, vivid story of a strange sort is enough. The meaning maybe different with everyone.

The Process of Making Mac and Cheese

For a good reason, I find it crazy that people can so trivially disregard the art of making mac and cheese. From choosing the box, to adding the cheese, it is not as simple as you believe it to be. Making mac and cheese is an art and must be learned. It takes years to master the making of mac and cheese and it takes focus, determination, character, and even a little bit of soul. Each batch you make has a part of you inside of it, and a good batch will have the totality of your heart and soul poured in right alongside the milk. So at this point, any sane person is going to ask me, “Matt, how in the world do you do it, then?â€" Luckily, following this is a step-by-step guide that even an idiot can follow, so hang tight and pay close attention. First, you're going to need to buy a box of macaroni and cheese Even though this seems redundant, there are some special tips to keep in mind. For one, Dollar General sells cheap boxes of mac and cheese. A Kraft box costs a

Drinking Water and Our Health

The body needs water to transport nutrients, stabilize electrolytes, to help with the absorption of vitamins and minerals, to maintain body temperature, to protect and lubricate tissue, and to excrete metabolic waste. We can't live without water. The Institute of Medicine recommends that men drink at least 13 cups of water daily and women drink at least nine cups daily, but the fluid demand can be individualized depending on your activity level (Thompson & Manroe, 2013). For the better part of my life tap water is what I turned to when I was thirsty, even drinking out of the water hose as a kid. In 1977, a bottled water known as "Perrier" was introduced and became all the rage for Americans (Moskin, 2006). Since then, bottled water has grown into one of the largest industries in America. In 2004 more than nine b

Literature and the Dark Side of Life

Martin Luther King Jr. once wrote...only when it is dark enough can you see the stars. In other words, only amongst negativity are the positive things in the world portrayed. This quote is proven true in both Night by Elie Wiesel and "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower," by Stephen Chbosky. Both Elie Wiesel and Stephen Chbosky use the literary elements of conflict and symbolism to show that only when things are the worst is when the positive sides in life are revealed. In the novel Night, the reader is introduced to the character Elie Wiesel who is conflicted between choosing whether he should be at his fathers side or not. in Auschwitz, the death camp Elie is taken to, he remarks all the children abandoning their fathers because they saw them as weak and wanted to fight for themselves. Elie struggled between choosing his father, or life and was uncertain of what d

History of Politics and Poverty

Although there are many definitions of poverty the World Bank Organization in 2013 defines poverty as poverty is hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to school and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, is fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty has many faces, changing from place to place and across time, and has been described in many ways. Most often, poverty is a situation people want to escape. So poverty is a call to action -- for the poor and the wealthy alike -- a call to change the world so that many more may have enough to eat, adequate shelter, access to education and health, protection from violence, and a voice in what happens in their communities. (StudentReach.org, 2013) In 1601, the Poor Law was introduced to tackle poverty. This was a relief system which placed emphasis upon the local parish to look after their own poor and was considered responsible for

First Industrial Revolution and the Rise of Capitalism

The First Industrial Revolution's impact on society was greatly felt though urbanization and mechanization. Urbanization was a direct result of the factories that were developed in cities, a population shift that occurred from the farm lands to the cities. Cities, namely Chicago, grew at an unprecedented rate. The need for housing grew as well as services for the growing population which further led to terrible living conditions. The future workers migrated to the cities looking for jobs, causing overcrowding and pollution. Mechanization made way for another social consequence of the revolution. The revolution brought about the factories that mass produced goods. Most of the immigrants that migrated to the cities were unskilled laborers who were willing to work for low wages. Because of their skill level, they were expendable to the factory owners therefore, they tolerated horrible working conditions. The laborer was no longer a vital part in the production of goods the factory m

Speech - Cultural Communication of the Vietnamese

Hello everyone, it's very nice to be here. My name is Vicky. Today I'd like to present to you the cultural communication of Vietnamese people. My purpose in this speech is to help you get more interesting facts about our country which is a multicultural society. To begin with, I'm going to ask you a question, do you know what cultural communication is? Cultural communication is a component of general culture in order to show our educational level. It can be a way to express our politeness, friendly attitude like open countenance or maybe the deeply-felt words and also the respect for someone. In short, it is a combination of many factors such as speech, gesture, behavior, attitude and so on. Considering the attitude of VP in the communication, we can clear

Topic Summary - Aesthetics

Introduction I have chosen 19th century art and the Aesthetic Movement to consider What is an aesthetic? I chose this period because the aesthetic movement of the 19th century celebrated beauty for its own sake, not just in painting but also in furniture, textiles, ceramics, fashion and architecture. Beauty in the Victorian period was very much linked to lifestyle. It was also the period where photography first started to be widely used. Charles Baudelaire sums up the idea of beauty and aesthetics for me, he said: All beauties contain, like all possible phenomena, something eternal and something transitory,- -something absolute and something particular. Absolute and eternal beauty does not exist, or rather it is only an abstraction skimmed from the common surface of different sorts of beauty. The particular element of each beauty comes from the emotions, and as we each have our own particular emotions, so we have our beauty. Within the assignment there are several sections, the fir

Christmas and the Coca Cola Company

Coca Cola is perhaps the most famous brand, spread around the world thus the company's image managers always tried a rather strategic positioning in order to gain popularity, trust but what's more important to maintain its top position. To begin with, I would like to say that the PR responsible with the promotional campaigns but also the advertising agency which deals with the TV commercials have always had innovative ideas that had a good grip on everybody from children to grown-ups. But the one that really caught my fancy, the one I could never get tired of is that with the famous Coca Cola Santa Claus. It has been my favourite advertising since I was a child and these days, even if I grew older and I have changed with the passing of the time, I still wait impatiently for Coca Cola to wish us Merry Christmas" and happy holidays. As we all know, holid

Corporate Social Responsibility

Introduction As the markets are always very competitive and the conditions are tough to succeed in this has lead businesses to improve their CSR. However as businesses struggle to find a beneficial relationship between implementing CSR and their financial performance they are rather reluctant to do so (Burke and Logsdon, 1996). This essay will look at and discuss the benefits and issues faced with the applications of guidelines to sustainability reports. This is the business partaking in voluntary schemes that will benefit society and therefore make the business more appealing to the public. (Sprinkle and Maines, 2010). Another part of the implementation of the CSR is that stakeholders have a lot of input into what activities the business should carry out; this will be highlighted within the First Group Plc. First Group PLC First Group PLC are one of the major transport companies that operate in the United Kingdom and also in North America and they see CSR as being important to the

Lying and Kantian Morality

Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher who wrote the book 'The Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals'. Within this theory he stresses the importance of duty and duty based ethics. At the heart of Kantian Ethics is the 'Categorical Imperative'; which can be followed by any rational person, they are based on an 'if'-they are moral ought's. In response to the question, Kant believed that under any circumstances - lying is always wrong regardless of its consequences. For many people in today's society it is hard not to lie; our moral duties are tested especially in difficult situations where lying could be the best procedure to create a satisfying consequence. But, for Kant, the law "remains in full force, because it commands categorically." (G,438-39/57) 1 Kant's theory outlines two imperatives which are Hypothetical and Categorical. The Hypothetical Imperatives are based on an 'if'. We can reject the command as long as we are willing to reject the &a
