The Effects of Totalitarian Control

Both George Orwell in 1984 and Aldous Huxley in Brave New World highlight the thought control of a totalitarian government to demonstrate how total information control can result in an absence of individuality. The societies in these novels use conditioning, through propaganda and drugs, to create a population that respects and believes in the government fully. In Oceania and Brave New World, history and true information is stripped from the general public in order to create loyal, and robotic beings. The governments also take away language and literature in order to limit society's ability to express themselves, resulting in like minded people. The less people know, the less their individuality can shine through because they everyone believes in one central idea with no diversity. In both novels, the totalitarian governments condition their citizens to make sure they act to their high standards. By constantly giving their people soma, a drug that creates happy and mindless people, the government can assure everyone will be happy with their status in society, and will never

Narratives of The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men

F. Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby, and John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, are two novels that deal with the tragic culmination of the American Dream, personified through respective protagonists. However, these protagonists are perceived very differently as a result of the different narrative perspectives in the respective books. Despite their apparent contrasting nature, both narratives observe a certain form of distance, with the narrator in the Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway, being a peripheral one and the narration of Of Mice and Men being done in third person. However, as Nick Carraway himself is immersed within the story, it makes for a more subjective narrative. The third person narrator in Of Mice and Men, in contrast, is able to maintain a more objective viewpoint throughout by evoking a sense of detachment from the events of the story. These varying forms of narration dictate the way the respective characters are presented and as a result, their connection with the reader. H

Online Reputation Management (ORM)

The growth of the internet over the past two decades has come as a welcome development for businesses, both big and small. The internet has provided a whole new, vast and efficient advertising space. However, bad publicity surrounding the brand can also spread faster than ever, tarnishing the image of the brand. The reputation that a brand projects towards its customers, business partners and stockholders can have dramatic effects, not only on the company's revenue but on its very existence. Many brand owners and managers are still ignorant of the concept of Online Reputation Management (ORM) for businesses. Search engines are powerful online reputation drivers. If a significant number of top listed search results on a company are negative, customers are likely to click on a rival company's entry. Good search results don't a

Amir in The Kite Runner

The book, the Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini is a story that mostly takes place in Afghanistan. One of the themes in this story is redemption. From the beginning to the end of the book, the main character Amir is searching for ways to redeem himself, an example of this would be with him and Baba. The most important thing he is trying to redeem himself for is his actions he committed towards his best friend and half-brother Hassan. The real debate of this story is, can Amir be redeemed for what he did to Hassan. Amir failed to do so, sadly. He ran away and did absolutely nothing when Assef was sexually violating Hassan, and he also treated Hassan as if he was his servant. Hassan loved Amir and always did what he asked for with no fail. The real reason Amir went back to Afghanistan and did what he did was because his conscience was soaked in guilt and he couldn't take it anymore. He did what he did in order to live more and it was too late anyways, he couldn't even apologize to Hassan.

What I've Learned in English 101

English 101 seemed a daunting task a few month ago as I nervously entered the classroom for the first time. Essays were never something I enjoyed doing in high school back in the late 1970's. Opening up my mind to the concept of writing with purpose, to me, has been the most valuable part of the experience. Not to mention I am eager to move on to English 102 in order to further my development. English 101 has given me the ability and taught me the value of being able to write well using acceptable cited research and properly vetting those research sources to insure reliability. First, I learned that writing is a learned skill and not necessarily something one is born with. In addition, I came to the realization that writing is not something I am too old to learn to do well. For instance, I have been able to achieve better than average scores on my class assignment, quizzes, and essay's. Most of my life I have avoided writing thinking of it as a chore that should be avoided if possible. My limited education has been one reason for my not considering writing as one of my more reliable skills. But my main r

Themes of Christmas Memory and Pancakes

Both authors of "A Christmas Memory" and "Pancakes" utilize similar literary techniques, but the authors convey different themes by doing so. Truman Capote uses mood, imagery, and symbolism to generate a relaxing and peaceful mood, whereas Bauer uses the same techniques, but to generate a frustrating mood. Although the literary devices used by Capote and Bauer are the same, they yield different moods for the reader by using mood imagery, and symbolism. Both authors use the element of mood effectively, but they utilize it convey different types of the element into their story. An example of mood in Joan Bauer's "Pancakes" can be found in the excerpt". Teeny weeny ones coming up, I chirped, and raced back to Andy," and "Chocolate silver dollars for the brat on eight. " This excerpt clearly shows a mood of frustration of the narrator, as she is tired of her job of serving a group of people by using the word 'brat', 'chirped',

Secrets in The Fall of the House of Usher

"The Fall of the House of Usher" is a short story about a man visiting his childhood companion who happens to be ill. Throughout this horrific tale, there are several dreadful pictures being painted in the readers' minds to set the mood. The family, as well as the house, holds many secrets. Eventually, the secrets are uncovered and both the family and the house fall to their doom. In "The Fall of the House of Usher," Edgar Allan Poe expresses the idea that the physical house represents the Usher family through descriptive imagery of death, suggestion of the family's secrets, and disintegration of both the family and the house. Poe focused this short story around death and terror by forcing his readers to imagine dark, gloomy settings. He begins the story with the narrator "passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country," and he feels "a sense of insufferable gloom" as soon as he sees "the melancholy House of Usher

Hunger - Food Scarcity and Inequality

Question Is chronic hunger a problem of scarcity or inequality? Response "Hunger" is the term used to describe the painful sensation that one feels from the want of food. It is the result of food insecurity and therefore results in malnourishment in many parts of the world which has put it on top of the global agenda. In many third world countries today there is a huge demand for food. The shortage of food in such countries like for example Asia have lead to many deaths and diseases which has had a decreasing effect on the human population. Taking a Stand - A Man for All Seasons

Every once in awhile, there is that one person who stands up and fights for what they believe in. This has to be a certain type of person, one who no matter what will keep straight his beliefs. A person who through thick and thin will keep the same frame of mind, a person who thinks their beliefs are worth dying for. That's what I think "A Man for All Seasons" is, someone who is willing to risk everything to not give in to what they are fighting against. There was one in the 1500's and that was Sir Thomas More who stood against the king getting a divorce. And I think equivalent to him is Rosa Parks, born in 1913. Rosa Parks was the first woman Civil Rights movement who succeeded in getting the country's attention about the country treating African Americans below the white race. Even though they are in different times of each other and obviously they have different things to fight for, they both share so

Leadership and Management

The terms leadership and management are often used interchangeably and frequently miscomprehended. In order to address the question, it is necessary to first unearth and define what leaders and managers do, and also distinguish any similarities and differences between them. Kottler (1990) and Boddy (2013) identify the role of management as complex and varied. While there is no widely recognised definition, many theorists can agree on a number of key functions which must be carried out by management; planning, organising, controlling and motivating (Fayol, 1949; Brech 1957; Koontz and O'Donnell, 1984; Peters, 1998). There has been a plethora of attempts to define leadership (Bass, 1990), and although there is a lack of continuity between them it is apparent that each characterisation is contingent on the person providing it (Pfeffer, 1977). It is a process of social influence (Kruse, 2013) and the most recognised leaders are those who empower others (Gates, 2008; Drucker, 1954; Haw

My Breakthrough Moment

The dream of every kid in junior high school is to be popular. There are only a handful of kids that aren't worried about popularity the "nerds." That's what my problem was in junior high school, instead of being a part of the crowd I wanted to lead it. In which I failed to lead any crowd, just simply became a part of one. But what kids don't understand is that being a student first is the most important thing in school. It will take you so much farther in life, rather than being the person that everyone knows. Only thing that does for you is trap you dead center in dramas crosshairs. That creates a million more problems for you to suffer through. This is what needs to be done now so you won't have a single regret later. Everything else can come second such as popularity. I wish I had taken my own advice back then; it would have saved me a year of school. In school, I always put my work first and everything else last. My teachers always told me I was the leader of the class due to the attributes shown in class. My family always told me that I was made to be a leader.

Informative Advertising

"The advertisement is the most truthful part of a newspaper." - Thomas Jefferson There has been an ongoing debate about advertising, with one side arguing it pushes us to buy things that aren't useful to us and the other arguing it tells us about new products that might help us and make us happy. Both of these points are fair. Of course the ultimate aim of advertisement is to ensure consumerism and make people money, and therefore advertisers are going to use techniques such as stereotypical images, music and idealised scenes to make this happen. However, in this essay I will argue that overall advertising is a positive force that we need in everyday life because it helps you make better decisions on how to use your money well and it is a medium for spreadin

Juror 10 in Twelve Angry Men

Assignment Describe the character and role of a juror of your choice in the play 12 angry men. Explain the significance of that juror in illustrating the theme of the play. Compare and contrast the juror with one other juror. Response The play "12 Angry Men" is set in a New York City Court of Law jury room in 1957. The novel is written about a criminal case in which the accused is 16 year old teenager. He is charged with the act of premeditated homicide on his father, which has happened in their own apartment. The lad has a slum background, as well as having heavy evidence stacked him, and it is now up to 12 jurors to decide his fate. They are randomly chosen and are prohibited to have any other influence upon them for this case. In this essay, I will be mainly focusing on the 10th Juror and how he illustrates the theme of the play, as well as compare him to one another juror. Number 10 has quite the significant role in this play, in terms of illustrating the main topi

Book Analysis - A Tale of Two Cities

Question The Comparability and Dissimilarities of Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay Prompt: Compare and contrast the characters of Darnay and Carton. What do they represent? How are they morally and ethically different from each other? How are they similar? What motivates their actions? Response In the 1859 novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, in which the impact of the brutality of the French Revolution is examined by placing a spotlight on a few individuals who are dramatically impacted by the revolution. Despite their similar physical characteristics, they initially appear to be morally different. Dickens also uses these characters to display one of the key themes in the novel, light and dark. Charles Darnay represents morality and the upstanding citizen, the ideal citizen. Sydney Carton represents, at least outwardly, immorality. In the novel A Tale of Two Cities, the characters of Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton look almost identical, yet they outwardly display having

Poetry - Photograph of the Girl

From the poem's title, I predicted it stands for a symbol of an iconic image that portrays horrific depiction of the war on poverty, and how children are affected by it. The history behind the title also offers a point of entry into a set of interlocking questions about how women living in other countries are treated unfairly, especially if they come from poor families. Photograph of the Girl can have many impacts on viewers. People can begin feeling compassion, hurt, or even begin remembering a certain point in their life when they suffered certain pain or abuse. Thus, a photograph is a reflection of our own suffering. It represents the truth that a viewer chooses to invent. Sharon Olds used a certain photograph to explore identity, poverty, hunger, discrimination, and inequality. For centuries, women living in poverty suffered from abuse, had lack of education and healthcare. As a girl born into poverty, she might have been abandoned

Arranged Marriages in Canada

Question Should arranged marriages have a place in our Canadian Society? Response I do not think arranged marriages should have a place in a Canadian Society or any society because it is wrong and unfair. One of the reasons they should not have a place in our society because your parents will most likely not take your wishes into account on who they will make you marry. Secondly while your parents are making you marry someone else you could be deeply in love with someone else. Last but not least 99% of the parents who tell you who you're going to marry will make you marry someone of the opposite sex, but they may be attracted to the same sex. First off, your parents will pick the person you are going to spend the rest of your life with, often what they care about is the amount of money the family has. These types of parents us

Ohrid's Monument - The Plane Tree

Years, decades, centuries passed by the plane tree. Ohrid citizens counted to 800, 900, 1,000, and then stopped. It is older than Noah, were saying with a smile on their face. It welcomes us all, and sending us all on the other world. Indeed. Here, near the Plane Tree was broadcasted the news of the birth of a new son or daughter, and here stopped the funeral processions and citizens were saying goodbye to the man who was going to eternity in front of the tree maybe not as old as eternity, but it symbolizes the eternity for the citizens of Ohrid. "A man can do everything, the older residents of the city say, but centuries of a tree cannot. Top of tree older than a millennium, can survive only with the will of the Almighty! It is not just a simple child of nature. However, this tree deeply rooted for centuries in center of the city, according to the legends, was planted by St. Clement, the patron of Ohrid in the 9th century. The tree was planted at the entrance of the city as a port, o

In Cold Blood - Fictional Devices

In Truman Capote's novel, In Cold Blood, he strived to create a non-fiction setting that would leave readers unable to set the book down. Some readers seem hesitant to label this piece of literature as non-fiction because of Capote's choice to construct it with literary devices that are often found in fiction novels. Those who have read In Cold Blood began to question and challenge Capote's credibility as a writer. They felt that he should reconstruct the brutal murders of the Clutter family while remaining as close to the true story as he possibly could. Even though Capote used devices of fiction writing, it does not take away his credibility but simply proves that he can write a nonfiction novel using a number of different writing techniques from other genres. A particular question continues to be presented within the literature world: Does labeling any novel "non-fiction" make sense? The inquiry caused great controversy and numerous people have spoken out on this subject

Why People Don't Help in a Crisis

"Why People Don't Help in a Crisis," co-written by John M. Darley and Bibb Latané, states that there are three primary reasons to a bystander's unresponsive behavior. In the event of an emergency a person must first take notice of the situation. Then interpret if the scene is truly an emergency and ultimately determine if one has a personal responsibility to help. Darley and Bibb conclude that someone's reactions are manipulated by how other people around respond to the situation. If people are going to get involved at the time of a crisis, they have to notice something is happening. Humans, for the most part, are taught to mind their own business and keep to themselves. It is even considered rude to stare at others in public. Because of this, most do not notice when there is someone in need of assistance. After conducting an experiment, Darley and Latané concluded that the more people around, the slower a person will recognize an emergenc

Ester Preparation and Purification by Distillation

In an attempt to show a degree of understanding of this reaction, the above diagram has been constructed and split into four steps to illustrate how butan-1-ol' functional group reacted with acetic anhydride to produce butyl acetate. This has been described in three stages however this reaction happens constantly in order to modify the structure of the ester. This is also known as a substitution reaction. The reaction involves the two reagents, the first being Butanol which consists of a functional group O-H which is prone to change in order to form a product with more stable chemical properties. The oxygen in this functional group is electronegative dense, meaning when reacting with anhydride which is the second reagent it can harvest more electrons. The weaker bond in the anhydride which is C-O is broken the carbon reforms its 4 carbon bond structure with oxygen leaving the hydrogen to attach to the (CH3COO "H") the oxygen has formed a 2 bond structure and the hydrogen ha

Summary of Nazi Experiments

When people think of doctors they picture white coats and someone to heal their ills. Unfortunately the doctors you will read about in the following paper don't fit that picture. Doctors that swore The Hippocratic Oath-turned the world of medicine into a nightmare, their medical procedures were not meant to heal, but to harm and to end one's life, not to save it. Under the Hippocratic Oath, a physician is sworn to aid the "sick according to their ability and judgement, but never with a view of injury or wrongdoing...they will abstain all intentional wrongdoing and harm." These doctors were the doctors of the Holocaust and worked at Auschwitz and Dachau and committed crimes that are still unimaginable. During the Second World War, the infamous Nazi doctors played a crucial role. Why would doctors betray those they took an oath to serve? Hitler and Himmler's health minister made it known to those in the medical field that a decision had been made at the highest level. This decision was

Informative Essay - Illegal Immigration

America has been known as the land that welcomes in newcomers with open arms. Every year, there are well over a million immigrants that enter our country expecting to receive all the benefits of a citizen without going through the arduous process of becoming a legal citizen. Because if the shocking amount of citizens that our country receives each year, immigration has become one of the most controversial and complex issues in our country. In addition, illegal immigrants greatly affect our culture, our economy, and our future. As illegal immigrants are granted citizenship in the US, it encourages more illegal immigrants to come to our country. Illegal immigrants are granted jobs in our country, which suppresses wages and takes away jobs from the American citizens. Because citizenship is so easy, it promotes more illegal immigrant to come. Today there are well over 20 million illegal immigrants in our country. 20 million is enough people to populate the three largest cities, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Every year, half a million more immigrants enter our country illegally. Every country must know how many il
