Uniforms and Student Behavior

Introduction Student's behavior plays a major role in the learning atmosphere of the classroom. For over 30 years, the idea of school uniforms and their effect on student's behavior has been suggested as a way to cut down on behavior issues. If students feel safe and secure they are more prepared to learn. In 1996, during his state of the Union Address, Bill Clinton suggested that school uniforms could solve school violence. Often students are bullied and picked on because of the clothing that they wear. Gangs also use clothing to represent to the other students what gang they are in often by the color of clothing they are wearing. A frequent debate is rather school uniforms could help improve student behavior. Statement of the Problem The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of a school uniform policy on the behavior and attitudes of the students. Would the implementation of school uniforms decrease school violence and improve the learning environment of students? Would

Brown Versus Topeka Board of Education

Sixty years before Brown vs. Board of Education, racial segregation in the United States was rampant, backed by the Supreme Court decision Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896). Racial segregation manifested itself in many different areas; housing opportunity, education, medical care, transportation and employment. Whites had their own exclusive water fountains, as Blacks would drink from the "colored" fountains. Blacks had to wait on a separate line at the movie theatre. Besides for being subjected to humility, black facilities were usually not just separate, but inferior as well. In 1951, parents from the city of Topeka, Kansas, in cahoots with The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), filed a class action lawsuit against the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. The NAACP had assigned the parents as the plaintiffs for this case, with Oliver L. Brown as the main parent that represented the case. Brown, alongside with the other parents, claimed that the c

African Americans in the Modern World

For a while now African Americans have been searching for acceptance among society. Through modernism, many of today's innovative ideas have developed. Modernism is a movement toward modifying traditional beliefs in accordance with modern ideas. However, if any of those new ideas were to perhaps come from the mind of an African American it would be shunned and never brought into mainstream by white America. This grip on the minds of African Americans led to W.E.B Du Bois' theory of double consciousness. Double consciousness is viewing oneself through the eyes of others. African Americans almost felt the need to censor their creative minds because of this. When white America releases their grip on the past and accepts African American ideas, American modernism will flourish. The problem is generalized around American modernism. Other countries in the world have grown to accept African Americans as they have other ethnicities in the world. W.E.B Du Bois had a very modernistic perspecti

Sex Education and School Curriculums

The argument about sex education (if it should be taught in school or not) is still controversial, most especially in religious and conservative areas. However, most of the areas in United States are teaching sex education in schools. I know some people at age of thirteen, he or she did not take sex as an ordinary thing because of the influence of media and the people around him or her. Many sexually active teenagers are educated about the dangers of unprotected sex, STD's and so on. Therefore, engaging young teens to try and have sex since it has been viewed by teenagers as the norm. Due to its very sensitive topic, Sex education should not in school. Sex is a very delicate issue. Parents and teachers should be aware of what kind of information should be given to the children. Supporters of sex education, on the contrary, point out that it should be taught at school. Furthermore, they state that it will increase awareness among young teenagers. However, most children are curious. If

Striving to achieve ones goals is not as easy as it may sound. The smart goal I chose was to learn the craft of bringing out the full flavor various alcoholic beverages. The goal I have in mind is, by the end of the semester, to be able to efficiently and tastefully mix beverages in order to satisfy my customer's taste buds. The reasons for me choosing to learn how to bartend efficiently is to thrive in my current job as a bartender, increasing the possible profits that I can derive from bartending. Socially, I can provide satisfactory drinks for me and my friends at parties or social gatherings. The plan I have established to obtain my goal is to learn all the recipes from the restaurant, observe my fellow bartenders and acquire their skills and knowledge. I am already required to work, so I have no excuse not to learn the recipes that I am already demanded to know. I have to put effort on my behalf in order to learn the correct and most efficient

The American Dream No Longer Exists

The term "American Dream" is used in various ways across the globe. It basically means that with sacrifice, hard work, and good education people can succeed and live their lives happy with little to no worries. The American dream is the ideal life for everyone. Many people have expanded upon this definition of the American dream and most people believe such a dream isn't achievable in today's modern structure of the American society. Everyone interprets the American dream differently. To some it might mean getting an acceptable education; using it to get well paid jobs and becoming moderately wealthy and being able to live their lives doing whatever they love and pursuing the dreams they wish to pursue. To others it might simply mean raising and supporting a family. It could be being a stay at home mother or father. The point is there is not a concrete definition of the term "American Dream." It is a belief that each individual person has. Today people argue that su

Theatre Review - Company

In the Florida State University School of Theatre, director Nathan Norcross and his team of designers failed to unify the elements in the "world of the play" to convey a clear understanding of the concepts presented in the production of Company based on the choices of plot structure, scenic design and costume. The theme in Company, the importance of relationships in a life worth living, is difficult to grasp because of the lack of continuity in "world of the play." The flash backs that were intended to explain the marriage and relationships were not clear and therefore, were not effective. This is an example of how a good theme can fail when the elements do not work together. Norcross and his team of designers failed to produce an effective plot structure that the audience could understand and follow. One reason why this play produced a feeble plot structure was because the play jumped around from scenes that did not relate to the one before or after it, which mad

Guilt and Violence in Raging Bull

In various guises, a search for redemption is a common feature of many of the protagonists in Scorsese's films. J.R. (Who's That Knocking at My Door, 1969), Charlie (Mean Streets, 1973), Travis (Taxi Driver, 1975), Christ (The Last Temptation of Christ, 1988), Henry (GoodFellas, 1990), Sam Bowden (Cape Fear, 1991), Sam Rothstein (Casino, 1995), Frank (Bringing Out the Dead, 1999), Amsterdam (Gangs of New York, 2002) or Teddy (Shutter Island, 2010) are just some of the characters in Scorsese's filmography whose stories of redemption constitute the central conflict of their respective narratives. This search for redemption usually involves the character going through a violent process to cleanse him of his faults. Sometimes this takes the form of physical cleansing elements, such as blood in the case of Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, or fire as in Casino. As Michael Bliss says, "this pattern of violence followed by enlightenment continually reasserts itself, a horrifying

Critical Analysis of Hamlet

A valuable text is one that is able to articulate its ideas, allowing understanding amongst the audience. Although contextual values change, the basic human desire to seek answers to the fundamental questions of life has not, causing Shakespeare's play to speak in different ways. Hamlet's ability to be re-contextualized is due to its universal themes and unique characterization, allowing for multiple interpretations throughout the plays lifespan. The continuous search for truth in Hamlet exposes the audience to deception and corruption present in the world, creating a play that explores the concept of truth and appearances, a theme that is relevant to any context. Shakespeare's notion that humans are desperate to find the meaning of truth is evident in his persona, Hamlet. Hamlet's character is that of a weak soul whose emotions dominate him, driving his rash actions and behaviour in his need to separate right from wrong. This is evident in Act 1, in which Hamlet's love and passion fo

The Hunger Games - Political Review

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the second movie of The Hunger Games series. The background of the story is dystopian future, where a totalitarian country named Panem was created from post-revolution of North America1. Early in the history, there are 13 districts, but District 13 led a rebellion against the Capitol (Panem Government) and lost. It led to the destruction of District 13, and punishment to all of its allies2. The punishment comes in a form of oppression and limitation. It also led to the creation of an annual event called, "The Hunger Games" where every district has to send 2 representatives to fight against each other in a specific setting. These tributes have to fight for their life by eliminating other tributes. The purpose of the creation of the Hunger Games, after all, is as the "commemoration" of the rebellion and devastation it created. From the movie, we can clearly see that there are two main actors in this movie. The first actor is the c

Typee by Herman Melville

Unreliable narrators are unable to portray the environment that they experience and observe, as their bias damages the true meaning of a culture. In the novel Typee, by Herman Melville, Tommo renders himself as an unreliable narrator when it comes to defining the Typee culture due to his bias from previously living in the westernized world. Tommo works year after year on a whaling ship, which is grueling work. Upon his mistreatment by the ship captain, he decides to escape the boat with another crew member, Toby, in hope to find the friendly Happar tribe. Instead, they come across the alleged cannibalistic tribe, the Typees. Tommo lives among the Typee community for a few weeks, recording the account of events through his eyes. Knowing Tommo's preconceived connotations to what a savage is, Tommo assumes the Marquesan tribe to be a lazy, savage culture because of their engagement in a simple way of life. Tommo's partiality from only knowing the laborious, modernized structure of America

Fear in Lord of the Flies

In 'Lord of The Flies', by William Golding, fear plays a huge part in how the boys react to being stranded on the island. Every action is controlled by fear, although the boys try to conquer their fears, it is impossible to do, because if they were to succeed they would feel no reason to survive or live. Fears differ from person to person, because of this tension rises between Ralph and Jack. They have differing opinions on what is important due to their fears. Ralph's biggest fear is that they will never be rescued, where as Jack's biggest fear is that they will be unable to kill a pig for meat. "You let the fire go out." Jack noticed Ralph's scarred nakedness, and the somber silence of all four of them. He sought charitable in his happiness, to include them in the thing that had happened. His mind was crowded with memories; memories of the knowledge that had come to them when they closed in on the struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away it's life

The Life and Art of Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was an American artist born in Pittsburgh, during his life as an artist he revolutionised the way people perceived art to be and challenged social, political and cultural ideas in America. He was influenced mainly by his work in the commercial and advertising industry which made him question the use of mass produced items and used this technique to create duplicates of his paintings. This idea came from him asking the question "what matters now?". His main artistic approach was based around supply and demand. His outlook on art and it's meaning caused major criticism with people questioning his intentions and meaning behind his art calling him a business artist. With his attitude towards art he soon became one of the most popular artists of his time which allowed him to question what was art was and could be. With his fame, he not only questioned what could or couldn't be art but the different styles of art that could help express ideas. It soon became obvious esp

The Catholic Revelation

Catholics believe that Jesus goes by many titles, such as the Messiah, the Son of God or the Light of the World, but one of the key titles that Jesus is called by is the fullness of God's Revelation. Through fulfilling salvation History; the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the world made flesh has revealed to us God's plan for salvation and desire for intimacy with humans. Through the deeds and actions of God throughout salvation history, God has managed to reveal himself to his people, but his revelation through creation and the covenants of Abraham and Moses proved to be not enough in guiding humanity to intimate relationship with God as the tendency to sin plagued the intimacy of their relationship. It is through sending Jesus down on earth that God has managed to reveal fully his plan to his people and brought them salvation through the kingdom of God. Revelation is to make known a mystery or an unknown. When talking about God's revelation we mean the dynamic and con

Storming of the French Bastille

The fall of the Bastille has been one of the most significant events that started the French Revolution. Till this day, France celebrates the Bastille Day, also known as the French National Day, every year on July 14. People come together and countless ceremonies and parades are held during the day. In the article entitled "On the Taking of the Bastille and Its Aftermath", Edward Rugby discusses the remarkable series of events through his eyes. His letters focuses on the third estate's hardships and behaviors toward their rulers, which in my opinion, is similar to today's society. This essay will emphasize on the happenings at the Palais Royal, the fall of The Bastille, specifically the escape of the prisoners, and the arrival of the King. On July 13, 1789, in search for weapons and gunpowder for a planned attack, the inhabitants headed to the Bastille. But because the governor of the prison refused to provide them the weapons, the institution got attacked until they surrend

Victor Frankenstein and the Monster

"Everything is theoretically impossible, until it is done." – Robert A. Heinlein Science gives light to things that humans cannot quite grasp; it gives explanation on how things function and why. Along with that, science never grows old because there is always something new to be explored and the options are endless. That is why in this novel Victor Frankenstein takes great interest in this field. The field of science that he chose was the study of the human body and the function of it. Victor used his knowledge of the body in order to do the impossible; he created life from an inanimate body. He cheats life, but with this creation comes great tragedy and he is the one to blame not the monster. Victor says he creates the monster to better humanity but as the novel continues, it is seen that he does it for his own prideful self and to fulfill the desire to control life or cheat God. Victor creates the monster to rise in fame as the first to create life by his own t

Antropology Essay - Visiting Hinduism

Before making an attempt to study or understand religious beliefs and practices, we must first accept that some religions are not as familiar to us as others. In order to grasp a more narrow understanding of what a religion is and does, we cannot rely solely on a "textbook" that covers religions' scriptures, major figures and formal institutions, as this only provides a general vision of world religions, which often times "obscure the creative and flexible ways people practice their religion that may diverge from the ideal" (Guest 578). Through religious ritual and practice, people "make sense of the world, reach decisions and organize their lives," which was evident during my visit to the Hindu Temple in Flushing, Queens. I was interested in learning about Hinduism on a more personal level, through my observations and experiences at the Hindu Temple. During my visit, I analyzed my encounters with Hinduism in terms of the anthropological definition of rel

Driving Into the Wreck by Adrienne Rich

Adrienne Richs' "Diving Into the Wreck" illustrates the feeling of sensitiveness towards a tragedy, assuming it is a ship wreck, and how that tragedy has the capability to scar an individual. In doing so, Rich provides symbolic elements such as the water gear, the "sundry" ladder, the different colors and the use of vivid visuals. The usage of these specific elements seem to construct the mysterious atmosphere of the wreck that the narrator is surrounded with and the emotions the narrator feels given by the wreck. In the introduction, the narrator starts off by naming just some of the types of gear that are necessary when going into the water. By putting on the "body-armor of black rubber, absurd slippers, the gra

America's Response to WWII

1941-1945 was a hard time for America. After enduring a time of war and death years earlier, the people of the U.S. were facing it once again. America tried to avoid becoming part of World War II, but their involvement was destined to happen. President Franklin Roosevelt convinced Congress to lend warships and other weapons to Great Britain. Many Americans disagreed with FDR's decision. They believed that Americans should not be involved in a war fought across the ocean in Europe. This attitude majorly changed when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The attack left 1,177 innocent men dead. The Japanese dropping bombs on American soil was like a kid kicking a hornet's nest. One negative consequence was the creation of Japanese internment camps. Since the Japanese were the one's responsible for the bombing of Pearl Harbor and were one of the allie's enemies, Japanese living in America were prejudged. The government accused many American-Asians of spying and conspiring with Japan. This prompted the creation of internment

Napoleon came into the role of the French administrator knowing it would difficult due to the pain and anguish that the country endured during the French Revolution. Complex Interweaving in Dry September

Analyze how William Faulkner presents a complex interweaving of racial and sexual relationship in post-bellum America? 'Dry September' written by William Faulkner is set in Mississippi, in post-bellum America. Post-bellum(1866-1913 is the period in America after Civil War(1861-1865). After Civil war Slavery was abolished from South America, legally. Through taking this background setting for his story, his purpose is to make sure that his readers must get acquainted with the concept of how do South Americans take this political decision of abolishment of slavery and Blacks. Abolishment of slavery which was there in the amendments in the laws though could not amend the thoughts of Americans, which Faulkner has wonderfully displayed in this story. He has deftly woven the story with the threads of power paradigm that domineeringly worked in the post-bellum period. the practical power structure amongst white men -that is made by themselves only - gave them the highest position in it.
