Carrying a Big Stick AbroadOne will never know how much of an impact a person has had on society until they become familiar with their story. President Theodore Roosevelt has paved the way for a lot of countries with his contributions towards domestic and foreign affairs. In the article Big Stick Abroad, Roosevelt bullied smaller weaker countries, strengthened amity between the United States and Britain, and constructed the Canal across Central America in addition to many other things. He did what he believed was needed in order to make America a bigger and stronger Country. Theodore Roosevelt has come to be known as the first modern President of the United States and has left his mark on America. Some may think of Roosevelt as a bully when it came to foreign affairs because he didn't play fair and seemed to always get his way. I believed that President Theodore Roosevelt bullied smaller, weaker countries mainly in Latin America, although when it came to larger countries he took caution to those with equal or greater powers than |

Strength in What Remains by Tracy KidderIn "Strength In What Remains," by Tracy Kidder, the character Deo teaches us how to stay strong in difficult situations and follow our dreams until they become reality. His journey was full of misery and atrocity, but by the help of others and his strong personality, he managed to accomplish his dream of becoming a doctor and helping people in need. There were some people in his story, who helped the vulnerable Deo in many ways. Some helped Deo to get a job, some bought him a book to educate himself, and some found a way for him to enroll school. While these big-hearted people make me feel more human by fighting against the worlds difficulty, the inhumane genocide in Burundi that caused hundreds of thousand innocent people to die, and the consistent violation of human rights which Deo faced his whole life overweigh the positivity and undermine my faith in humanity. Some people in Deo's life, especially the ones that he met in New York, made his life more bearable. Those people he met |

Retirement of the Boomer GenerationThe oldest members of the Baby Boom generation celebrated their 65th birthday on June 1 in 2011. In other worlds, the first of the Boomer Generation reached retirement age in 2011. They were expected to retire at 65. However, the Boomer Generation is showing different ways about the retirement which are not seen in previous generation (Gibaldi, 2013). From a socio-economic perspective, the Boomer Generation delays their retirement because of three major aspects: Financial security, health condition, and current aging society. Baby boomers are those who were born after Second World War, between 1946 and 1964. They are often described as a generation of optimism, exploration and achievement because they are usually highly educated. Also, the members of the Boomer Generation have strongly established their positions of power and authority in society, and they have greatly influenced on the social development (Tokic, 2007). In addition, the Boomer Generation now accounts for almost 30% o |

Nurse Ratched - Literary Villain"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," by Ken Kesey, is centered around a half Indian man named Chief Bromden. He is locked up in a mental institution and has led everyone, maybe even himself, to believe that he is deaf and dumb. Nurse Ratched is the head of the ward and uses manipulation in order to control each of the patients. McMurphy on the other hand is a new transfer and a shrewd conman. He is a very easy-going and funny person, but when he realizes what exactly Nurse Ratched is doing to the patients, he makes it his mission to assist them in becoming more sane and independent. One theme is that although there may not be significant and outright mentioning of many women in the story, they can still be stronger than men in a mental aspect and use that strength to influence others to do their bidding. Throughout the novel, Kesey portrays women as dominant and terrifying figures to which men are forced to answer to. Nurse Ratched is the primary woman in the story and the first one t |

Speech - The Rapid Growth of TechnologyGood morning respected teacher and fellow students, I am here to talk to you about my opinion on the abuse of modern technology. Have you ever bumped into something or someone because you were too engaged on a game you were playing on your phone or because you got a text that you couldn't help but reply to? I have done this about a billion times and never learnt from the humiliation but this just proves that people now a day are often way too engrossed in their phones and other devices. According to the 'Infographic: 2013 Mobile Growth Statistics', "91% of all people on earth have a mobile phone" If you look around you during anytime after school, you can notice that many people are engrossed in their devices while simply walking down the street or unfortunately, even while driving. Most accidents are caused by people using their devices while driving from using things like their built-in GPS' or to |

The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored ManJames Weldon Johnson's first-person narrator in his fictional interpretation, "The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man," a skeptical, point-of-view about skin color. The narrator, decides to pass for white after numerous variations between assuming his status as a black man who wants to stand for the rights of black people and adopting the identity of a white man. In fact, identity, for this character, was never stable, since he lived the first years of his life not knowing he was classified as black, then he lived as a black man for a period of time, and after some years he decided to adopt a white identity, which may seem a new identity at first, but is a return to the beginning of his life, when he used to believe he was a white boy. Although it is interpreted as aiming at unity, Johnson's text fully explores the complexities of the African-American experience. During the first years of his life, the narrator was never treated as a black boy and never suffered prejudice. Ho |

Terrorism in Today's WorldThe War on Terror that began after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center was the impetus for two wars: the war on Afghanistan from 2001-2014 and the war in Iraq from 2003- 2011. The wars took place in those two states because the U.S. believed that those states had connections to al-Qaeda, the terrorist group behind the 9/11 attacks. President George W. Bush as well as President Barack Obama condoned these wars in the hope of stopping al-Qaeda and other terrorist cells and limiting or ending future terrorist attacks in the United States. However, some claim that these wars have fueled the fire of jihadists and have increased their desire to attack America. Yet, the United States' invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan is not the sole reason behind jihadists' targeting the U.S., because the root cause for terrorism is complex; additionally, the Afghanistan and Iraq war increased the national debt, but has not stopped the increase of terrorism worldwide. Experiences of a Father-to-BeA typical North-American father's experience of pregnancy tends to be more stress related and carries with it feelings of incompetence. The mother is able to feel the baby move and shares a physical experience as the baby is nurtured from within. She and the infant share significant changes from body size to hormone levels. Through this shared experience, a natural attachment with the baby grows before the baby is born. Fathers do not actually feel the baby grow. All that is perceptible to them is the outward changes in their spouse/partner. This can make the transition to fatherhood surreal to them. Subsequently, most fathers feel the need to go above and beyond to make their partner as happy and comfortable as she can be while they are pregnant. In some cases, the father will put the mother's needs and desires above their own. With this transitional experience, comes natural feelings of anxiety, worry, fear and ineptitude. Fathers should be more involved in the birthing process and i |

Child Socialization Observation PaperIntroduction Over the past eight weeks, I have been attending regular "play sessions" on the playground of Woodward Elementary School. During this period of time, I became particularly aware of the rules and boundaries, set by adults and peers alike, that the children often encounter when attempting to frame their interactions in an acceptable way. To simply walk up to a group of children and ask them to play in a friendly manner represents only a minuscule factor of social development. As a child interacts, he or she must learn to interpret a wide variety of complex cues and requirements. Problems arise when separate requirements conflict with one another or with the child's own perceived needs and, at times, it is difficult for the child to understand that these requirements even exist! The internalization of formal rules is one facet of social development to which adults assign great significance. Indeed, noncompliance is the "most frequent reason for psychiatric |

Presidential Positions of Germany and FranceThe role of government leaders varies from country to country, there is similarities between them as well as differences. Democratic countries consist of either a Parliamentary, Semi-Presidential, or Presidential system of government. While many have the same positions, the power associated with those positions differs. Germany is a Parliamentary republic with a centralized national government located in the capital city of Berlin.1 France is a semi-presidential republic with a centralized national government in the capital of Paris.2 How the two Presidents are elected is a representation of how much power the country is allowing the office. Although both Germany and France include presidential positions within their government, the role in Germany is more ceremonial while the position in France plays a more significant role and has more power. Comparing the Presidential powers given to the position for each country demonstrates how the roles differ. Even though both Germany and Fra |

Speech on Perception CheckingOne of the reasons that people ruin their relationships is misunderstanding. People often jump to the conclusion after they notice something without even wondering if their assumption is correct. Perception checking is a useful tool that helps us to understand others better instead of jumping to the conclusion or assuming that our first interpretation is correct. Perception checking has three parts: description – provide a description of a noticed behavior, interpretations – include at least two possible interpretations of the behavior, and clarification - a request for clarification about the behavior and interpretations. Perception checking is a respectful approach in communication and also minimizes the defensiveness. In reality, I have encountered some situations in which using my understanding of perception checking gives me a better way to react and handle my interpretations. The first situation I have encountered is that I was not clear on my uncle's intention. I have lived with my uncle's family when I came to study abroad in the U.S. My uncle and I have a great relationship. The first few months after I ca |

Reconstituting Local ManufacturingThe global economy and marketplace have impacted local industry and local manufacturing harshly. With consumers having choices from international companies able to import their products, a common market pool for the whole world, it has become more difficult for the local merchants to thrive. Also, many Western companies have established themselves in developing countries, such as McDonalds and Starbucks, with over 31,000 and 18,000 locations operating worldwide respectively. While the influx of multi national corporations has created economic opportunities for many in the communities that they operate within. However, with this prosperity has come the evaporation of local industries. One enormous problem could be the price of doing business and the amount of capital it takes to operate in these markets. These international companies have vast reserves of capital to fund their operations in various countries, even buying up local enterprises to reduce their competition. These corpora |

Biography of Serial Killer Ted BundyIn the world of serial killers one of the most studied and discussed killers is Ted Bundy. His crimes from both a criminal and psychological standpoint have been a consistent topic throughout my study of criminal justice and psychology. Up until this point in my studies I have gained a general knowledge of his criminal and psychological history. His psychopathic nature leads me to want to learn more about how and why someone with his mental state commits such crimes. Theodore Robert Cowell was born to Eleanor Louise Cowell on November 24, 1946 at the Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers in Burlington, Vermont (Rule, 2009). Eleanor and Ted returned to her parent's home in Philadelphia to live under the rouse of Ted being Eleanor's little brother (www.crimemuseum.org). After four years, his mother decided to move to Washington to live with some other relatives (www.crimemuseum.org). Telemedicine and LifeBot 5LifeBot 5 is a relatively new telemedicine development on a low end usage. It started being used and tested for the first time in 2008. It was developed by the company LifeBot LLC, and uses an operating and database system called LifeBot Dreams which was funded by the U.S. Department of Defense through the Telemedicine and Technology Research Center (TATRC) grant of 14 million. The funding for the actual LifeBot 5 came from the grant of Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC). Although they are relatively affordable and the starting price is under $20,000, which to the average person is not affordable but if you think of these being used by the US Army, Navy, Marines, National Guard or emergency response teams they are actually relatively inexpensive for what the LifeBot 5 has to offer. The current usage of LifeBot 5 is low and is in more of a testing stage or used in war fields, remote areas and emergency situations than a wide hospital or home usage because it is made to be u |

Narrowing Setting in The Black CatIn Edgar Allen Poe's "The Black Cat," the narrator guides us through an ever tightening progression of scenes that are "nothing more than an ordinary succession of very natural causes and effects" (137). Poe uses this approach to setting to build focus and tension in the story. Through a first-person narrative and ever confining physical spaces, Poe shows the inner workings of a man mutating from being docile, soft hearted and kind, to a remorseless beast. Because of the narrator's focus on just this, we do not get vivid descriptions of the scenery around the characters. Rather, as Poe's story progresses, the world of "The Black Cat" closes in, decreasing in size from home, to basement, to cell and tomb. "The Black Cat" begins with an unreliable tirade by the narrator, who has been condemned to die by hanging the next day, telling us to believe "this is a series of mere household events" [Poe04]. Initially the man lived a varied and domesticated life, in a two story home, filled with the love of his wife, his animals and a "sagacious" cat, Pluto. This initial setting seems one replete with joy, |

The Invisible Man's Quest for Identity1. Introduction With the publication of his novel Invisible Man in 1952 Ralph Ellison certainly had his masterpiece. It tells the story of a young African American in search for his own identity by struggling with various life experiences. For this reason it is indisputable that Invisible Man is - principally - a bildungsroman as the novel "follows the development of the hero [...] through a troubled quest for identity" (Baldick: 24). And since the protagonist of the story also functions as the narrator one can even go further and narrow it down to the genre of a künstlerroman (cf. Baldick: 24). However did the author not only mean to create a story limited to a certain individual - even though individuality is a crucial theme in Invisible Man - but also wanted to put emphasis on the universal character that is linked with the novel. According to Ellison the struggling initiation of the main character should be seen as parallelism for the development of the black race - or |

Agriculture in IndiaThree major advances have driven agriculture in India: the Green Revolution, the first hybrid seeds and the introduction of the biotechnology sector. The union of these three events have managed to configure this sector as the backbone of the population and the economy. The Preparedness TheoryAccording to the evolutionary perspective, fear originates in defensive behavior mechanisms which assists an organism's readiness to cope with different types of survival threats (Blanchard and Blanchard, 1988, Marks and Toben̂a, 1991 and Russell, 1979). Fear motivates organisms to escape and avoid sources of danger and threat with quick activation of defensive behaviors, likely to have been learned by its ancestors, who were naturally selected for their ability to detect and respond to threatening phenomena (Marks, 1987, p. 288). An organism that can modify their behavior to benefit from experience are more likely to survive and pass on their genes to their offspring. Evolution has led to some objects and situations becoming innate sources of fear and has shaped some relatively hardwired and instinctive escape responses; however, all mammals are also capable of learning to fear initially neutral objects and situations that pose a threat or danger (Mineka and Öhman, 2002, p. 927). |

Infant Caregivers and Attachment BehaviorsEarly childhood experience is the base foundation leading to healthy child development and it influences further intimate relationships. The caregiver – infant attachment is considered to be strong relationship shaped in early pattern of interaction. Bowlby (1990) described attachment as one aspect of relationship between caregiver and child, which is involved in making the child secure, protected and safe. The experience throughout infant attachment is considered to have lifelong influence. According to Newman & Newman (2008, p.139) 'the mother's personality, the father's involvement in child care, the quality of parent's relationship with each other and their access to social support, parent's psychological wellbeing are all factors that influence child's vulnerability'. The purpose of this essay is to analyse different theories and research studies: Ainsworth's and her colleague's theory of attachment and Bowlby's research study called 'Forty-four Juvenile Thieves |

Personal Narrative - The BurnAbout six months ago, I experienced the most terrifying event of my life. My boyfriend of three years, Nic, got caught in a tragic fire in my back yard. It just so happened to fall on September eleventh, a day I will never be able to etch from my brain. The day started just like any other, he woke up at seven thirty in the morning to work construction for my dad while I continued to sleep. Nic was instructed to jackhammer out all of the tile in the laundry room and clean up the construction debree. Instead, Nic took it upon himself to go to the back yard and empty a large trailer of debree into the fire pit. About an hour later from the time he woke up, I was abruptly woken up by the sound of blood curtailing screams, like nothing I have ever heard before. He ran through my house strait into my bathroom to the shower. He bolted into the cold shower so fast he could hardly get his boots off in time. I tried communicating with him asking what was wrong but he could not talk, just scream |

Persuasion by Jane AustenThe novel, "Persuasion," by Jane Austen, comes at a time when the wealthy class of people had started losing the strong hold to power and wealth within the community. At this time the gentry were under pressure to acknowledge the nouveau riche in society and to recognize that a person cannot live on title alone. In addition, it illustrates how the titled members of society such as Sir Walter could not socially recognize the nouveau riche even when the nouveau riche proved to be more financially sound. The titled men were losing their resources as a result of the reducing flow of incomes but still they could not accept people who had not been categorized into their social class as new members of the wealthy class. Social class played a significant role in enabling the people of new money to access what only the old families with positions and title would previously attain. The author exemplifies the divergence between being titled and being rich. The basis of the argument lies on the firmness of one and the easy lose of th |

Family Planning in PakistanThe year 1952 saw a revolutionary change in the community development sphere which was brought about by the Family Planning Association of Pakistan (FPAP), that aimed to control the population outburst that persisted in Pakistan and was predicted to get worse. What is most amusing about this piece of information is the fact that it was not the government that stepped up to address this need, but instead was a Non-Governmental Organization that pioneered this progress. For this assignment the Non-Profit Organizations (NPO) will be defined as Ayesha Khan and Rabia Khan have defined them, institutions that are private, not profit oriented, self governing and voluntary and aim to bring about social change of some sort (Khan, Khan 3). The terms NPO and NGO will be used interchangeably.
