American and Finnish SchoolsThe US education system is mediocre compared to the rest of the world. Academically, they are many years behind. They are specifically lacking in Mathematics, Science and Reading. The US placed 25th in Math and 21st in Science. From the top 56, the US placed 23rd overall. 20% to 34% of middle school students are proficient in reading. There are 2,000 schools in the US that are called "Failure Factories" or "Drop-Out Factories" meaning that they are schools built for student to fail or dropout. Experts believe that failing schools are a result from failing neighborhoods. Reformers believe the opposite from the experts. American school were the best in the 1970s but ever since then they have drastically plummeted. Action needs to be taken! America school should incorporate Finland's education policies such as using the same curriculum for all students and implementing a comprehensive preschool program at an early age that focuses on socializing and "self-reflection"; additionally, there should be better teaching training progra |

Burning of On the Gods and TruthHistory Protagoras was born in 490 BCE in Abdera, Thrace. He was to become a pre-Socratic philosopher, writer, and sophist, which meant that he taught others Greek rhetoric and fallacious arguments. There are three claims that he is famously known for: (1) that man is the measure of all things, (2) that he could make the "weaker argument appear stronger," and (3) that there was no proof of theistic views, and he could not tell if the gods existed or not. His first claim was – and still is – viewed as a radical form of relativism, meaning that in his statement he implies that all beliefs and belief systems are equally valid. Impiety was a crime punishable by expulsion in fifth century Greece, and Protagoras' agnostic views on religion – as can be inferred by his third claim – eventually led to his trial in Athens, where he was expelled. After his banishing, Protagoras spent his life in exile, and eventually he die |

The Pursuit of HappinessHave you ever wondered what makes someone happy? When a person wakes up each morning, it's a new day filled with endless opportunities. For most people, the day is going to go just as one plans, but for some people not as well as they hoped. One would wonder, if this is pure optimism or pessimism? I believe that one's happiness is in the mind of a positive person. When a positive person thinks with the glass half full and not half empty, good things happen. The journey people take in their life is to search for happiness. Happiness is something someone can feel. Happiness is an emotion that is unique to an individual because it is described differently from one person to the next. What may make one person happy, may not be the same for another. People will search a whole life time looking for what they think might make them happy. Does making money create happiness in one's life? Some people believe that making money will make them happy, but will it? Money can make people happy at |

Stories on Losing InnocenceAs we see in the short stories "Araby" (Joyce) and "Where are you going, where have you been?" (Oates), innocence and experience are the themes which are prevalent throughout the plot in both of these stories. In general, both characters go through at an early age what one would say is a "rite of passage" or some sort of transformative experience in which their "youthful fantasy bubbles" are popped, thus forcing them to deal with reality, and leaving their naive thinking behind them. Connie and the unnamed boy in Araby both find themselves being attracted members of the opposite sex, and find a way to deal with the consequences of their endeavors. With Connie the innocence lost is her shattered reality, with the boy in Araby it is his disillusionment which ends up shattered. Loss of innocence is arguably an integral part of growing up in today's society. Without it, one is left with a delusional, warped, naive point of view about the world in wh |

Histographical Review of the Korean WarPrior to reading this article by James I. Matray my knowledge of the Korean War was very limited. I knew the War lasted from 1950 to 1953 and ended with a truce between those involved. I knew that it was a war between North and South Korea both receiving outside assistance in the war. The United States fought for the South Koreans in an effort to stop the spread of communism and The Soviet Union fought for North Korea. That pretty much sums up my entire knowledge of this subject and then of course that Alan Alda starred in a sitcom television series called MASH. Before reading this article I had no idea the controversy surrounding the war or even the roles each side played, which I accredit to the fact that many schools do not teach the extent of the war as they should. The Korean War is a complex part of history and should be examined with care. Even 60 years after the war, the cause and course of the war is debated among many scholars. In school we are taught that the Korean War was |

The Uniqueness of Human BeingsIn 1859, Charles Darwin published his famous research, "The Origin of Species".1 His findings brought rise to the theory of evolution, inferring that humans came from lower forms of life. It is safe to say that if this is true, the organism that which humans rose from would share some traits with humans. Which brings rise to this question, is human nature distinct from other forms of life? In order to answer this question, the term "human nature" must first be defined. Webster dictionary defines it as "the nature of humans; especially: the fundamental disposition and traits of humans."2 Response to death, communal nature, collaboration, the ability to create, and the ability to appreciate beauty are all traits of many that's can be used to prove aspects of human nature are shared by other animals. Humans, as a species, have practiced death rituals for hundreds of years. In the Jewish community, a member of the chevra kadisha, a holy society that prepares |

Hemingway's and Fitzgerald's Modern WomanHemingway and Fitzgerald were keen observers of the changes in women's behavior and they worked enthusiastically to reflect the female's point of view in their novels. The Victorian Era which ended in late 1800s, enforced male dominance and female dependency which led to the inequality between genders. During that period the public and economic world was led by men. On the contrary, women ran the domestic sphere and they had to involuntarily accept that their place was in the home. Typically, women were not allowed to be educated outside of the home and they were expected to serve their husbands, and be the ideal Victorian Women society expected them to be. By the end of this period, women had abandoned their traditional gender roles and in continuance their public power rose. This essay will explore the "Modern Women" which are represented by different female characters in the three classic works, and it will focus on the idea of the "flapper" women, who they were |

Coming Of Age in MississippiAnne Moody's autobiography, "Coming of Age in Mississippi," delivers certain messages and history that most people, still to this day, tend to ignore. In this autobiography, Moody exposes her fight against racial segregation during the Civil Rights movement in Mississippi. Throughout this memoir we are faced with many themes such as: the destructive power of prejudice, racial distinctions, and personal growth. While searching for songs that related to this autobiography and the themes, I discovered four songs that really captured my attention. The songs I have chosen symbolize Anne Moody's personal growth. In chapter three, Essie Mae faces racial distinction for the first time ever after the movie incident where she walked into the white lobby with her white friends. She was very confused because she never thought of them as being white before. Then, she realized that because of their whiteness, they were considered to be better than the blacks. Functionalist View of Education and EconomyIn 1993, New Vocationalism was introduced into the curriculum. GNVQs and NVQs (introduced in 1986) were put into place to counteract the views that many 16 year olds were not ready for the world of work. It was hoped that Vocationalism would bridge the gap between the world of work and educational establishments. Functionalists argue that education is one of the most important institutions that pass on society's values and norms, creating a value consensus (Parsons). Education acts as a bridge between family and society, passing on universalistic values; these are the value of achievement and value of equality of opportunity. Equality of opportunity was a key message through the 1988 Education Act; most people believe that all children should be provided with opportunities to develop in an equal measure to those across all class/ethnic/gender backgrounds. Durkheim argues that education develops social solidarity, wielding a mass of individuals into a united whole. This argument is problematic because Functionalists assume that the norms and values promoted in schools are from society, however Marxists believe that these are actua |

Benefits of College Comfort FoodsWhenever a person leaves their home they can end up feeling lonely and depressed which is something you may have experienced at least once in your lifetime. College students are more prone to experience this because it is their first time being away from their family and friends who have always been there for them. They are just beginning to venture out into the real world, which can be a challenge for someone who has yet to experience the challenges that the world sets up for us. Many college students fall into depression, which can either help or harm them. Many resort to comfort food, which reduces their depression, although it can also benefit them in another way. Comfort food can also help college students perform well in school because it reduces depression by reminding them of their homes, helps them associate with their culture, and it gives them energy. Comfort food not only helps college students reduce their depression but it can also help students perform well in their a |

Power and Domination to Rule OthersPower is the probability that one actor within a social relationship will be in a position to carry out his own will, and that the members of that group are willing to abide by his/her rules. Therefore power, or domination, demands that some individuals rule others. This is Weber's main concept about domination. He speaks of organized groups and gives great importance as to which element of authority is fundamental to the group. Whatever the group, whatever the content of it's interests, the distinguishing feature of the group, for Weber, is an internal differentiation of roles with respect to authority. In a sense this derives from the orientation of the co-ordinated action to an 'order'; that is, the terms of the 'order' must be carried out and enforced, which in turn requires a responsible agency of administration and enforcement. So from the 'ordinary' members of a group, Weber distinguishes those who carry responsibility and authority and those who follow and l |

Reasons for Community ImmersionWhat is community immersion? Why do we need to perform this kind of activity? Are there benefits we can get while conducting community immersion? These are just some of the many questions that were being answered in the subject National Service Training Program 2 (NSTP 2) as the second semester of the school year has started. Mr. Julius Delos Trinos, our NSTP 2 adviser started discussing the overview in community immersion. He defines the meaning of community immersion as an introduction to the subject. He said, as far as is can remember, community immersion is one important requirement of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) prescribed to students, male and female alike, in private and public higher education institutions and technical-vocational schools as it is said in RA 9163, Sec. 7. As the days gone by, we bought a reference book to help us to understand more what the subject was all about, especially the topic about community immersion. I have learned that community imme |

Coney Island and the Mirror EffectPrior to the turn of the century, American culture was dominated by a genteel middle class. This dominate social class set the standard for American life, resulting in strict cultural and moral standards. The genteel reformers saw it as their duty to create morals and character in American society. These reformers dominated the 19th century and instilled these ideas of self-control, sobriety, integrity, and honesty through the culture and arts of the time. However as the 19th century came to a close the US was presented with many new opportunities as the landscape shifted to an urban, industrialized society and the culture shifted along with the society as well. This cultural shift from the stringent culture of the 19th century to a more free urban society can be best observed through the rise in amusement parks at the time. As summarized by John F. Kasson in the book Amusing the Million, "Coney thus offers a case study of the growing cultural revolt against genteel standards of |

Working and Learning the Hard Way"There are no shortcuts to any place worth going." ― Beverly Sills. In the essay "Working at McDonalds," by Amitai Etzioni he explains how working at a fast food establishment does absolutely nothing for you. How it doesn't build character, or doesn't teaches teenagers responsibility. How it distracts them from school work and how it won't build any social skills for the rest of their life. Although Etzioni has a few, and very few, points that are worthy of listening to the ones that are far from the truth are, teen responsibility, how it distracts students from school and how teens won't have any social skills for life. Working and going to school is difficult but it is in fact doable. Etzioni declares that "these jobs undermine school attendance and involvement in school activates" If anything it would make students want to be more involved in their school. Students in general want to be a part of what's going on with their peers, with their school. |

Themes of Hospitality in The OdysseyFar removed from today's individualistic society, is the ancient Greece portrayed in Homer's The Odyssey, where hospitality and good-will were customary. In the epic, Zeus decrees that those who seek clemency from the gods must welcome travelers with hospitality. A man was obliged to give his finest foods, lodging, and assistance before ever asking for his guest's name or intent. There is a sense that those of high status are the main givers of hospitality, however, the wealthy are not the only ones commanded to offer a level of friendliness. Homer emphasizes hospitality from everyone during Telemachus' and Odysseus' journeys, using a man's cordiality with his guest to infer his character. If a man is disingenuous, then he doesn't show hospitality and Homer makes sure that individual faces the vengeance of those he has wronged. To acknowledge the importance of a major principle in ancient Greek culture, the purpose of this essay is to examine the role that hospitality plays in The Odys |

Short Story - Reality CheckThe ceiling is rugged and covered with minute balled pieces. It's like the little popcorn, and is symbolic of me. The door was a bold red and had 4B on it in gold, rusty copper numbers. I figured that it had some kind of meaning behind it, but I could never figure it out even if I tried. The lights continuously flickered on and off, as though it wasn't already dark enough. I couldn't fathom how or why it wreaked stenches of dead bodies and tar. I could taste the tar building up in my lungs. My eyes watered as the odor began to choke me. Left almost breathless, my heart crumbled when I felt cold metal and pure latex gloves penetrate my skin. I went against everything I believe in, now everything that I knew or thought I knew no longer had meaning. Before my feet would move, I fell into a trance. My heart started racing and I began to feel moisture sit in my palms. As I stared down the aisle, into thin air, my mind kept replaying the most horrific night of my life. Once again, I could feel a rush of emotions ready to uproar, but I blinked and in an instance it was the best day of my life. I looked up to see the man of my dreams in |

Women in the Music IndustryIn a male-driven record industry, women have been marginalized since the dawn of the 20th century when music publishing and recording began. Today, the issue of women being inferior to their male counterpart in the music industry is still there. Women are the sex symbols of music. There are so many issues that must be made aware of and addressed. Demoralization of women taints the fresh minds of younger audiences, degrades women by promoting double standards, and feeds into the norms of society. Most of these issues can be fixed by spreading awareness and educating the people. For now, society will be blinded by these problems faced in the music industry until change arises. The younger generations of America are watching. Everything in the media is easily accessible to view. America has become numb to the fact that the exploitation of women in music causes serious impacts on the minds of young children and young adults. For example, the infamous form |

The Bernie Madoff StoryAbstract White collar crime in a nutshell is lying, cheating and stealing. The term was reportedly coined in 1939 and is synonymous with a full range of Frauds committed by business and government professionals. White collar crime is not a victimless crime; a single scam can destroy a company and devastate vulnerable families by wiping out their life savings, or cost investors billions of dollars. Today's Ponzi frauds have become more sophisticated than before. Edwin Sutherland initially coined the term 'white-collar crime'. White collar crime refers to crimes that are committed by respectable business people during the course of the occupation. Crimes which are considered white-collar include embezzling, price fixing, insider buying, and fraud, falsification of expense accounts and theft of materials. One of the biggest white-collar crimes took place right here in the United States and was ran by Bernard Madoff; he was wall- street most notorious white-collar criminal and he ope |

Cogon Grass and Eco-Friendly CardboardIntroduction Nowadays, paper is widely used in all aspects of our daily lives. People use paper in writing, delivering important documents, writing agreements, recording of business transactions and the likes. Moreover, cutting trees is a primary step in paper-making process in which the cellulose undergoes treatments to produce paper. Alternate sources of paper like cogon grass can be used in making it. Cogon grass is one of the best plants to use since it grows anywhere. It is the cause of some problems in the environment because this plant consumes a lot of space when grown. In relation, the researcher's study is to produce cardboard, a thick file of thin papers, which is made up of cogon grass as an alternative source instead of tree. Background of the Study Cogon grass is a pest plant, since it grows everywhere and consumes a lot of space when grown creating great competition between plants. Summary of The Dark Knight RisesOver the past month of this semester in this class, we have had the chance to watch many different types of movies from musicals to romantic films. They have been very interesting to not only watch but also having the chance to read a couple of them as well. A Streetcar named Desire, Amadeus, and Chicago were all very interesting in their own ways of having both theatrical and Cinematic features. I personally would say Amadeus had the most Theatrical and Cinematic features of the three, even though Chicago was a close second. But these movies were produced in 1984 and 2002 respectively and over such a period of time producers and writers find ways to make their work more appealing to their audience. I'm not going into much detail about these pieces because I want to focus on a piece I talked about earlier this semester. The Dark Knight Rises, directed by Christopher Nolan, ranked as the number 11 highest grossing movies of all time and has peaked as the seventh highest grossing movie |

Comparing Starbucks with Coffee BeanMillions of people around the world thrive on their morning, afternoon, and sometimes evening coffee. Due to the massive amount of consumers in the coffee industry, there is also a lot of competition that comes with being in an industry such as this. The two main rivals, Starbucks and Coffee Bean, may cause many dilemmas between which coffee to drink. Some think Starbucks is better, but some prefer Coffee Bean. People should drink Starbucks coffee more than Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf because of its amazing coffee taste, service, price and personality. For starters, the way the coffee bean is being made and the way it tastes is very important when it comes to coffee. Starbucks has more of a bitter taste whereas Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf has a sugary taste. As most know, coffee is supposed to be bitter, but Coffee Bean's coffee doesn't qualify for that. For instance, Starbucks brews actual coffee to make a Grande regular Coffee, but Coffee bean just uses powder, which makes it taste artificial |
