Speaking the Language of Love

Romanticism is defined by social psychologists as an overlook on relationships that love should the most important criterion in choosing a suitable mate. Although the common belief is that women are more romantic than men, recent surveys have shown that on average men outscore women in romanticism; however this is not a solid fact. In fact, out of the many studies that have been conducted on this subject, there is not a study that proves it one-hundred percent. One such study has shown that there is not a gender difference in romantic beliefs. Due to the fact that love is an irrational emotion, there should not be a gender placed on how an individual speaks the language of love. The three factors that define how you speak the language of love are your personality, your personal love language, and the environment in which you experience love. As said by Jodi Picoult, "You don't love someone because they are perfect. You love them in spite of the fact that they'

Baseball and Performance Enhancing Drugs

Baseball is more than just a game to most Americans. For many people, particularly the older folks, baseball is a reminder of the hardships they overcame and the good times they enjoyed. At one point in time baseball represented purity and happiness, and it provided people with hope for humanity and for the future of this great nation (Grossman, Kimsey, Moreen, and Owings 2). No matter what was happening locally at home or globally around the world, baseball was an outlet for people to divert their attention. Fans followed their favorite players and teams by listening to a ballgame on the radio, watching a game on black-and-white televisions or by sitting in the stands at the ballpark. Furthermore, the right to play the game also meant more to the players themselves. They were not viewed as arrogant and selfish athletes who used their talent solely to make money. Instead, they felt privileged to be earning a salary while playing the game they loved so dearly. These athletes were viewe

Radical Groups and Ideals of the 1640s

Even though radical groups had existed before the 1640s, they were very secretive due to the fact that they were illegal. However as more people began to be included more into politics, the decline of censorship and the breakdown of control had allowed radical groups to emerge in the 1640s. This meant that those who came out of hiding were able to spread their ideas and debate openly in public. As a result it caused the development of political, religious and politico-religious groups. Threat is the expression of an intention to cause harm or pain. In my opinion I believe that the radical groups and ideas did pose a threat to a certain extent in the 1640s as there were many effects of radicalism as a result of the emergence of radical groups and ideas however there were also factors in which these groups and ideas did not pose a threat. Some would state that radical groups and ideas were a threat. The fifth monarchists who were also known as the 'millenarian' were viewed as a g

Madness in The Tell-Tale Heart

Have you ever thought about killing someone? Maybe something about them such as a physical deficiency, drove you to hate them and their deformity, and you want to do them harm. Have you ever felt the rush of taking a life, or the guilt that follows such a gruesome deed? The narrator in "The Tell Tale Heart" has felt all of these emotions. The narrator in "The Tell Tale Heart" is mentally unstable. He shows us his instability because he wants to kill the old man just because of his deformed eye. He thinks it is right to kill the old man and because he believes he is right, he thinks killing the old man is the sane and rational thing to do. In the end, his mental illness even leads to his confession of this awful act. First off, the narrator in "The Tell Tale Heart" demonstrates he is mentally unstable because he wants to kill the old man due to his "vulture" eye (Poe). The narrator's love and respect for the old man is overshadowed by his obsessi

Reaching for a Higher Education

Coming from a middle-class household, money is not a surplus, and conserving money in any way possible is always a priority. So it's only right that the rising cost of higher education is frightening. This is the same for many students throughout the country whose families struggle to afford the costs of going to college. Many students are forced to stop attending. For many students, this happens because they can not keep up financially. This poses a serious threat to the education integrity and standard of the United States. With less people being able to afford higher education, less people will be able to attain degrees and receive college level education. This will lead to our educational rank as a country to ultimately decrease, as it is right now. Fixing this problem and getting the United States back to the top of the rankings like we used to be will not be an easy fix. It will take a well thought out, and discussed financial change in federal student aid programs to make higher

Neural and Hormonal Aggression

This explanation of aggression states that it is hormones such as heightened levels of testosterone that lead to aggressive tendencies. Hormones are chemical substances that regulate the mood of your body; unregulated hormones therefore can cause mood changes. Testosterone works by modulating neurotransmitter pathways. It does this by lowering the amount of serotonin in the brain/nervous system. There are two models that give an insight into how testosterone can affect aggression. The Basal model suggests testosterone causes heightened dominance; thus explaining that the testosterone levels are the cause of aggression alone leading to other factors, feeling a sense of dominance over other gives a heightened sense of security, therefore leading to irrational behaviour. Research by wagner supports this model; he castrated mice and proved that the overall levels of aggression decreased if the male mouse was castrated. Moreover, upon giving the castrated mouse testosterone again he found aggression increased. Although this study is done on mice therefore becoming less appropriate in generalizing the findings to human behavior it do

Global Market and Command Systems

The Market system and Command system can be found in different parts of the world. The Market system (Capitalism) is a free market system where investments, production and distribution are based on supply and demand and is similar to those found in the United States, Canada, South Korea and the United Kingdom. It also can be found in certain cities such as Hong Kong. The Command system (Socialism/Communism) is an economy in which production, investments, prices, and incomes are determined by a government and is similar to the systems found in China, Cuba, and North Korea. There are advantages and disadvantages to both the Command Economies and Market Economies. In a Command Economy, it is possible to adjust the production rate of goods so that the supply meets the exact demands of the population. The chances of shortages are greatly reduced and shortages that do occur are kept

Development of New Technologies

The implementation of any technology requires the innovator to analyze the economic, environmental, social, and political factors. An innovation requires the developer to consider the after-design factors to decide whether the technology will be beneficial to the society. The factors to consider are economic and ethical implications of the innovation deployment. Moreover, it is necessary to analyze different ways to reduce environmental implications of technology. Positive feedback from these discussed areas indicates the need to implement the technology while negative research in these areas indicates that the technology is not viable. Economic Effects from the Deployment of the New Technology The technology has several economic implications that are either negative or positive. The economic consequences of the models have to give the users profit and other benefits. Economic viability of the application depends on the uses, profits, benefits, efficiency and other environmental matt

Boxer the Horse in Animal Farm

In this extract, the reader learns that Boxer is very well respected by his fellow animals (except the pigs, arguably). This is shown through three things: his physical strength and how his appearance changes, his attitude and the other animals' actions towards him. Before Boxer falls down he is described as looking old and Lee says that "his strength is not what it had been". Boxer is starting to age and is fast approaching retirement. His "great haunches seem to have shrunken" which is a sign that a horse is aging and should not be in work any more. When the spring grass comes through, Boxer does not fatten up or get a shiny coat. Because of this, the reader feels sorry for Boxer and he is portrayed as a weaker character than he used

Symptoms and Treatments of Hemophilia

Many people believe that people with hemophilia bleed a lot from minor cuts. This is a myth. External wounds are usually not serious. Far more important is internal bleeding. This occurs in joints, especially knees, ankles and elbows; and into tissues and muscles. When bleeding occurs in a vital organ, especially the brain, the person's life is in danger. The word hemophilia derives from two Greek words: haima, meaning blood, and philia, meaning affection. The blood of a person with hemophilia does not clot normally. He does not bleed more profusely or more quickly than other people; however, he bleeds for a longer time. Such bleeds are also called hemorrhages. His blood is lacking a protein that is needed for normal clotting. Some people with hemophilia lack a protein called factor VIII. This is hemophilia A. Others lack a protein called factor IX . Their disease is called he

Athenian Citizens and Democracy

The Ekklesia, meeting at the Pnyx, was the frequent gathering of Athenian men designed to listen, discuss, and vote on decrees that affected aspects of Athenian life - both public and private. Demosthenes notes that the role of the men of Athens when debating important matters at the Ekklesia was to "allow freedom of speech to every one of the counsellors," highlighting that the citizens at the Ekklesia were open to share their views, an important characteristic of Athenian democracy.. All citizens were welcomed over the age of eighteen, but the Ekklesia was generally limited to those over twenty as youths had to participate in military training duty during their 19th and 20th years (ephebe). Thucydides writes that "administration was in the hands of the many and not of the few", as seen in the amount of citizens that participated in the Ekklesia. The Ekklesia, and thus the Athenian citizen, was responsible for electing strategoi, amending or initiating legislation,

Tesco's Business Solutions

Tesco is a British multinational grocery and merchandise retailer. The big retail chain is facing many problems, economically and lack of customer service. It´s shares have fallen with whole 20 percent, which is bad, because some of their shareholders could sell their shares in the fear of losing more money. This act will cause another drop in their stocks. The customers say that Tesco is letting their standard slip by firing many workers in the middle of the financial crisis, so the staff is not enough, many of their shelves are empty. Especially the staff cuts had left the stores a miserable place to shop. Many of their customers were disappointed. It was so bad that some shoppers had ranked Tesco 99th out of 101 store groups based on customer service. Some of the retail experts say that Tesco´s stores are "too industrial" and "lack warmth". So in general the shopping experience and quality have fallen. The other big mistake Te

Hitler - Chancellor of Germany

Hitler became the chancellor of Germany in January 1933 for a variety of reasons, including the fact that the Nazis were undoubtedly the most popular party in Germany by this time. As well as this however, several other factors contributed to this significant milestone in his rise to power, such as a lack of confidence and belief in the Weimar Republic after the Wall Street Crash. This was on top of the significant minority of society who had never believed in it or its principles, with over 20% voting against democratic parties upon the Republic's inception in 1919. Added to this is Hitler as an individual. His charisma and cunning cannot be overlooked, which manifested themselves in increased support and several successful tactics, whilst the It is thus clear that many factors influenced Hitler becoming chancellor in 1933. The fact that Hitler was leader of the most popular party cannot be overlooked as a factor. In the July 1932 election, the Nazi's had won 37.4% of the vote to bec

My Life Goals

As I make some of the most important choices in my life, people are going to ask, "Why did you choose that?" or "How come you want to do this?" Everyone has their own set of goals they want to achieve in life based upon the actions they make. No one has the same set of exact goals like you do, everyone is different in that sense. Getting a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, getting hired on by a police agency, and moving out of my parents' house are my three main goals. To begin, my first goal is to get my bachelor's degree is criminal justice from the University of Nevada, Reno. One of the reasons why this is an important goal for me to accomplish is because my sister already has her degree in psychology and I want to show her and my family that I can do the same and graduate college. Secondly, achieving my bachelor's degree shows my parents and my sister that I was dedicated and very thankful for all the support and effort that they gave me. For example, m

Debunking Spelunking

Claustrophobia and caving do not go well together, but there I was, underground in Monongahela National Forest, walking along a subterranean riverbed whose river had dropped to a sub-subterranean level. Picture an underground multi-lane highway with on-ramps and exits. Now add an endless black tunnel, sound of dripping water, rough sand underfoot, the dank smell of air too long away from sunlight and holes of various sizes that gape suddenly in the circle of my puny flashlight and you have West Virginia spelunking. I'm glad I tried it once, but I feel no need to make exploring caves my favorite past time because I'd rather climb up instead of down, I don't like squeezing through tight places, and dark-damp is not my favorite kind of weather. Ten years ago we went down to the States on a rock climbing trip. We spent a few days glorying in the dizzying height of Seneca Rocks tackling the multi-pitched challenges of these magnificent granite slabs. Afterwards we swam in lively rivers to cool down and wash the effort of climbing off our sun struck bodies. But one day it

The Bridge on the Drina by Ivo Andric

The Bridge on the Drina, a novel written by Ivo Andric, is an enlightening, relatively fictional story of the historical transgressions that took place in the small Bosnian town of Visegrad. In the novel, The Bridge built over the river Drina transcends to become a symbol of this regional history and much more than a simple structural masterpiece. Spanning generations, the anecdote encompasses events from the mid sixteenth century all the way up to the beginning of World War I. The rise and fall of The Bridge, as depicted from its origin to the times when it is skirted by the railroad and damaged by the Austrians, denotes the hardships and drastic changes endured by the people of Bosnia. The resilience of the Bridge portrays the ultimate human tendency to adjust and move on. Andric uses the gradual decomposition of the bridge over the Drina as a metaphor to compare the also declining Ottoman Empire. The bridge, especially the kapia, play a monumental role in the bringing together of pe

Cost-Benefit Analysis of PED Use

A performance-enhancing drug is any substance taken by athletes to improve performance. This term is referenced often and typically refers to anabolic steroid use in sports by professional and amateur athletes. In an ever dynamic industry, athletes strive to be the top in what they do, or their playing time gets cut or others with a higher physical and mental state will be brought onto the team. With such a widespread in recent years in PED's ranging from sports such as cycling, baseball to the MMA, we can see that these leagues are the most competitive in the world, and with a stigma on PED's often times athletes are encouraged and agree in doping or taking enhanced substances to better their game. Just like organizations in a competitive market one must do everything to stay on the competitive edge, wheth

Fastfood - Leading America to Obesity

This obesity epidemic is affecting America. Two-thirds of American adults are overweight according to a study by Odgen in 2014. Furthermore, one fourth of children between the ages of 2-5 and one third of school age children are overweight or obese. Why is obesity an epidemic? It's because fast food companies are using luring advertising to attract customers to their establishments. Advertisements such as, making food look extremely pleasant and inexpensive. In addition, there are few healthy options at fast food restaurants and they usually aren't as healthy as advertised. Fast food companies hire professional photographers to make their food look more enticing. They use billboards, TV commercials and internet advertisements to bring that image to life. Some show a bun shiny and puffy with the meat perfectly proportioned and lettuce shiny and crispy. Others, like banners and

King Henry V - A Born Leader

Leadership can be defined as the process in which an individual is able to influence a group of people to attain a common goal. This goal is accomplished through mutual cooperation and unified behavior from all members. There are various theories concluded by psychologists to explain the traits of a leader. Traits determined by researchers such as intelligence, extraversion, openness to experience, general self-efficacy, and conscientiousness were inferred to be already possessed by an individual to make them a good leader. Another theory is that leadership can be attained through a process of learning leadership skills, whereas a third theory suggests that a leader emerges from an ordinary individual after significant events. It is evident that King Henry V, in Shakespeare's King Henry V, becomes a great leader who inspires his troops and brings them to a victory which seemed next to impossible. How did King Henry V become such a great leader? Was he destined to this greatness, as h

Eras Which Formed the American Identity

The American Identity shows a sense of duty by wanting to show everyone else the way to live. America as well wanting to benefit in a financial way also the pride in every single American that lives in America and America itself. The American identity is a sense of pride; the pride that you were born in the best and most successful country in the world. Wanting to spread our ideas that has changed over the years by cultures and the way the world is seen through times like slavery, poverty and expansion. The Gilded Age was caused by industrialization. The people in the one percent like J.P. Morgan, John P. Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie were the ones running and controlling others to benefit from them. People like them were the ones getting all the money. Industrialization did open up jobs for people but yet there was poverty everywhere. Factory workers worked up to 16 hours a day, 6 days a week. They basically worked there whole life to be able to survive. The robber barons lived comp
