Research Paper on Dating Violence

Teenage dating violence is very common in the early stages of the pre-teenage years, or between 6th to 9th grades. "Dating violence, including sexual abuse, has been found to begin as early as in the seventh grade.(Hokoda,2011:#351) Dating violence can come from teenagers who have been surrounded by the background of abuse from their parent relationships or who their peers may be. Relationship abuse may be surrounded by a foundation in cyber bullying, commonly associated with negative emotional, physical, social and academic consequences, such as depression, substance use and school failure. Dating violence, defined as "any attempt to control or dominant another person physically, sexually, psychologically, resulting in harm (Voltz at el, 2000: #587) Relationships whether it is a dating or friendship should maintain a healthy connection. In a middle school aged adolescent many changes are happening inside the body as well as the outside, the changes may make the child feel

Emotions, Memory and Propranalol

Around the age of three or four years old, children begin to have their first memories. Memories in which usually last a lifetime. These instances can have an enormous effect on the child and the path they eventually take in life. I'll use a family member as an example. As a little girl, one of my relatives endured a great deal of physical and sexual abuse by another relative. It made her nervous, anxiety-ridden, and drastically altered her life. The memory haunted her so much throughout her childhood that she found herself constantly escaping her home to hang out with the wrong crowd. While she was barely even a teenager, she began to indulge herself in drugs and alcohol. I remember her telling me once that she hardly even enjoyed using these substances, she just participated so that she wouldn't feel unwanted and rejected by someone once again. The looming memory of her early childhood abuse was just the beginning however. By the time she was eighteen, she ended up with a deadbeat

Perspectives of Social Intelligence

Humans are one of the worlds most interesting creatures, they are all similar in anatomical complexion but differ individually on account that there are no two people are the same. Personally I have found that everyday can be a challenge because new social situations arise that I have never encountered and my social intelligence is put to the test. Since humans are complex human beings, not everything that we feel or think can be transmitted to the people which we interact with. Thus even someone with great social intelligence can be stumped by certain situations or people. There is more to social intelligence than being able to understand a persons thoughts and feelings in a situation because you have to be able to put your thoughts and feelings into perspective as well. Social intelligence can be seen all around us and experienced through different mediums that can give us a different perspective on a situation, such as social media, literature and even in social experiments. Mental Health in Criminal Justice

Dealing with the mentally ill is something that makes many people uncomfortable and feel unsafe. This is not to say that all mentally ill people are scary and should be feared, but more that the people around them are not entirely educated on how to be around someone with a mental illness. Sometimes it just takes a little more patience, understanding and compassion. Unfortunately, the mentally ill do not always get treated in the best way and often end up in a prison and mental institution for majority of their lives. To me that is unfortunate, the really unfortunate part is sometimes prisons and institutions become a home to them where they are more comfortable and happy to stay. In today's society, the ideal place for any mentally ill individual is locked up somewhere. It seems like anymore, our world firmly believes that saying "out of sight, out of mind" in cases where the mentally ill are involved. According to a video, Frontline's: The New Asylum, roughly 500,000 men

Art History - Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's "Introductory Lectures on Aesthetics," is greatly influenced by the German aesthetic tradition, that refers to a type of philosophy that opposes materialism. The same German aesthetic tradition can also be found in J.J Winckelmann's writings, such as "History of the Art of Antiquity", "Thoughts on the Imitation of the Painting and Sculpture of the Greeks", and G.E Lessing's "Laocöon". Hegel, in particular, was strongly influenced by Winckelmann and his own thesis of "the end of art". His philosophy of art takes account of the beauty in art, the historical development of art, and individual forms of art, such as, architecture, painting, literature, sculpture, poetry, and music. There are three forms of art, or "three forms of the beautiful", (Hegel, 68) that is necessary to form the idea of art itself, as Hegel believes. The development of art from one form to the other is what Hegel defines as

Behavioral Study of Obedience

What if you were ordered to inflict pain on someone to the point of killing them, would you do it because you were ordered or refuse the order? According to Robert Lee "Obedience to lawful authority is the foundation of manly character." People comply with authority as a gesture of respect and trust, whether it is respect for the law/leadership or for someone. In today's society, people do things to prove that they are "man enough" to go through them. They also say the expression "I've got it in me," when commanded or asked to do things that are inhumane and immoral. Stanley Milgram conducted the behavioral study of obedience with the struggle between obedience to authority and self-conscience being the focal point of his experiment. Milgram conducted the experiment to investigate why people do things that are immoral and against their personal conscience because of obedience to authority. The subjects were 40 men between the ages of 20 and 50, drawn from

Entrepreneurship in a Christian Worldview

Prior to every creation, there stands a creator. When looking at a painting, we find a painter, a building has its builder and every business has its entrepreneur. Without the concept of entrepreneurship, businesses would not be here today. BusinessDictionary.Com defines Entrepreneurship as "The capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit. The most obvious example of entrepreneurship is the starting of new businesses." Entrepreneurship is simply stated as an act of creation accompanied by known and unknown risks. In the process of being an Entrepreneur, there are always three essential tasks; discovering or creating a need, creating a business model, and running the business. Every business seeks to fulfill a need. Whether in the service industry or manufacturing a physical product, a business brings together resources and produces a product that consumers wish to take advantage of. In orde

Ethnics of Animal Experimentation

In the past, animal research had a vital role in many scientific advancements and helps to answer unknown scientific questions. People are able to have a better quality of life due to scientific advancements that are made possible by animal research. Animal research creates controversy between people who agree with animal research and the people who believe research with animals is cruelty. These opponents include animal- rights extremists and vivisectionist groups who believe that animal experimentation is cruel and unnecessary, irrespective of its purpose and benefits. These extremists want the total abolition of all animal research. If these extremists succeed in the abolition of animal experimentation, there would be immense consequences for scientific research and advancements. Animal research is a necessity and should continue because animals are considerable in

Japanese Women - Career and Marriage

Japan has been famous for its gendered division of labor for a long time. There is a deep-rooted notion that men work outside, earning money and women stay at home, taking care of children, which makes the rate of women's participation in labor low. According to Japanese Cabinet Office (2013), continued employment of women after having the first child is only 26.8%. There are mainly two reasons why women quit their job after giving birth to a child; to focus on housework and childrearing, and the difficulty in managing both work and childrearing. Now, it can be safely said that Japanese society is changing for the better for women. The number of women who go on to 4-year-college greatly increased in the past several decades. According to Danjyokyodosankakuhakusyo 2011 (official paper on gender equality), the percentage of women who go to 4-year-college was only 12.5%, whereas that of men was 34.2%. In 2010, however, 45.2% of women go to 4-year-college, whereas 56.4% of men do. The

Silicon Polymer Lab Report

Abstract The purpose of the lab was to synthesize a silicone polymer by hydrolyzing a chlorosilane. This was demonstrated by the synthesis of the polymer, polydimethylsiloxane, from dimethyldichlorosilane monomers using hydrolysis and cross-linking reactions. The volume of the solution containing polydimethylsiloxane was found to be 16mL before Boric acid was added, which resulted in a 126% yield. After the addition of the Boric acid and subsequent heating at around 120C, a putty like material was the resulting product. It was solid and slightly elastic, it was also slightly grainy likely due to the addition of too much boric acid or an excess of diethyl ether that was in the final solution. Introduction Silicon is the seventh-most abundant element in the universe and the second-most abundant element on Earth, behind oxygen. In fact, about 25% of Earth's crust is silicon.1 Silicon the element and Silicone the polymer are not to be confused. Silicon the element can be used to make co

Advertising, Women and Body Image

In today's society of consumerism, women are consistently being bombarded with various forms of advertising. This type of advertising promotes a supply, and demand of products that women feel they need to achieve whatever the ad is promoting. In this essay an advertisement from Detour whey protein bars will be analyzed. The ad shows a beautiful woman with a sporty physique holding a protein bar. However, the ad is creating "false needs," as women do not need these bars to obtain the physique they want. Advertising also causes over consumption, as most women do not realize that these bars contain a lot of sugar and an over consumption of them without an active lifestyle can lead to weight gain and cause health issues. The ideologies this ad displays to women, signifies that that they need to be slim to be beautiful which is not accurate. Women should be taught to love themselves, and be accepting of whom they are, and that an advertised product can only alter the physical being but

The Downside of Teaching Abstinence

Abstinence-only education can have great benefits for children. By teaching them that there is only one option to live by, many people believe that that is the path they will follow. The curriculum teaches that abstinence helps you have more self-respect and respect for your partner. It teaches about greater faithfulness in marriage, and less worries about pregnancy and STDs. This, unfortunately, is not necessarily correct. A recent Waxman study states "Virginity pledgers are no less likely to engage in premarital sex than their peers. Pledgers have rates of sexually transmitted diseases similar to other teens, and are less likely to use contraception in the event that they do engage in sexual intercourse." The quality of information, the physical effects, and the psychological effects of this abstinence-only curriculum are causing major problems among today's youth. The curriculum is not properly preparing adolescents for the reality of their adulthood. In today's world children

For if you dislike them, perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.(The Qu'Ran)" The above quote is written for men regarding to their treatment of women. Cultural Integration and Segregation

When thinking about a pluralist society, one of the things that interest me are the differences between the many varieties of cultures. Culture is related to the your origin of birth, which makes me wonder if we really have our own opinion or if it all depends on our environment and certain events that occurred. When I combined culture with democracy, I questioned if it would be easier to integrate cultures or to separate them when governing. Indirectly questioning how culture affects politics. To state my research question: What social situation is more favorable when governing a democracy, complete integration or complete segregation of cultures? Segregation is the division of society into different parts, which mostly occurs when one cultural group

Voter ID Laws and Democracy

In the months leading up to the recent 2012 presidential election, there was an issue that was all over the news because of the impact that it would have at the polls. That issue was Voter ID laws--laws that are put in place by states which would require voters to show some type of identification before being allowed to cast their votes. The debate about whether or not these laws should be put in place became a heated one in this year's election. It created an uproar among U.S. citizens; some insisted that the laws were necessary to protect the integrity of the vote, while some felt that the laws were unfair because they would make it more difficult for some people to vote than others. Although Voter ID laws just became a hot topic in the public eye within the past year or so, the first laws of this nature came into existence in 2002 with the Help Americans Vote Act. This bill increased federal election requirements by stating that first-time voters who registered by mail must pro

Children and the Transition to Elementary School

Elementary school students have trouble adjusting to the new environment when they move from one school to another. They are frightened by starting again in an unfamiliar place. Also, it is very difficult to adapt alone in a place where you do not know anything. Therefore, to get new students used to the new surroundings, schools can provide orientations, offer continuous counseling, and help new students find good buddies. First of all, elementary schools can provide orientations to new students and their parents. When I was an elementary student, I moved to a new place because of my father's work. It was very scary to go to new school, because I did not know anything about the school, not even where it was located. At that time, the school provided orientation. One teacher came over and showed me and my parents the inside of the school. During the time, I can hear the description of the school l

Literary Protagonists and Antagonists

"The writer must be a participant in the scene...like a film director who writes his own scripts, does his own camera work, and somehow manages to film himself in action, as the protagonist or at least the main character." - Hunter S. Thompson. It is sort of how we venture through our day to day lives. We choose the setting and overall outlook, embracing life's unpredictable trials. We are the ultimate narrator and writer of our own tale, but it is fun to indulge in someone else's from time to time. Reading short stories fulfilled that pleasure, and had me comparing myself with their protagonists; also unveiling the curtain to what protagonists and antagonists truly are and the morals behind these stories. The protagonist is one of the most important characters, often initiating the main conflict of the story with the antagonist(Kennedy & Gioia 25). According to Kennedy & Gioia, the protagonist is, "the principle character who strives." Within every story, lives o

Federal Minimum Wage Proposal

President Obama has proposed to increase the Federal Minimum Wage to $10.10 as well as increase the Earned Income Tax Credit among other items associated with this. There are those who oppose the increase to Federal Minimum Wage as well as those who support this proposal. What we have to question when looking at this increase is whether or not it will actually help the economy or if it will simply raise costs of everything we buy on a daily basis. It is necessary that "businesses need to have money available to pay for labor, materials, power, and other inputs" (McConnell, Brue, Flynn, 315). It is debated if raising minimum wage will stifle these businesses, by increasing their pay rate for labor. There are many factors to consider when looking at this proposal that has a multitude of pros and cons. If this constant debate continues as it has in the previous instances then the typical result will be that most Republicans will oppose the proposal while the majority of Democr

Aztec Play and Games Culture

For the purpose of this assignment my group will be focusing on Native Americans specifically the Aztecs. Just like the vast majority of cultural groups, the Aztecs enjoyed playing games and indulging in various leisure activities. The Aztecs praised and admired remarkable athletic talent. So it's not at all surprising that they had a deep love for dangerous sporting events. One the most favored activities for adults were the ball games. As much as they enjoyed other games, the ball games were the most popular, and the most dangerous. Games that involved gambling were also very popular for adults. The Aztec children were similar to modern children, for they too loved to play. In the Aztec empire it was common for children to play with marbles, stones, and bow and arrows. Then when they became teenagers, most would play Ullamaliztli; a popular ball game and Patolli; a popular board game. The Aztecs were nomadic peoples for about 200 years before they finally made the Valley of Mexico t

The Unintentional Manslaughter of Romeo and Juliet

In Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet," requited lovers fall in undeniable love that is hidden behind closed doors. Their most trusted acquaintances keep their secret and prolong their love, even knowing the consequences of doing so. The star-crossed lovers find no other meaning to life without one another and end their youthful lives. The consumption of a poisonous solution is the cause of Romeo death and a dagger to the heart for Juliet's (V.iii 111-171). The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet was caused by the extreme impulse to defend each-others love, by the selfishness of Friar Lawrence, and for other people's desperate need for happiness. The extreme impulse to defend each-others love happened when Romeo saw Juliet at the Capulet's party. At that moment Romeo vowed that he could no longer love Rosaline and that he forever loved Juliet (I.v 45-54). Juliet comes to the conclusion that she also loves Romeo back, but she is heartbroken to learn that their families are enemies, and he is a Mon

To Build a Fire by Jack London

"To Build a Fire" is a short story that has been written by Jack London. In the story, under a freezing temperature of seventy five degrees below zero, the main character decides to travel toward the camp, where his friends are. From the very beginning, at Sulfur Creek, a local does not recommend that the protagonist attend to travel alone in such cold weather and alerts the brave guy how dangerous it could be. The main character does not heed old-timer's advice and starts his nine hour walk without a traveling partner other than dog. At first, he underestimates the cold and seriousness of the weather circumstances. He is aware of the cold and does not worry about it until later in the story. His wolf-dog companion frightened of the weather, and it seems to sense something dangerous ahead: "The animal knew that this was no time for traveling. Its own feeling was closer to the truth than the man's judgment." The journey is complicated with the route across hotter springs underneath a layer of thin ice. The man knows about this hazard and forces dog to go forward. He tells himself not to worry about his numb

Mr. Hockey and Mr. Canada - Gordie Howe

Identity can be a very powerful and elusive concept, especially with respect to the identity of an entire nation let alone a single human. It is important because, like most things in life, it is easier to group and categorize things in order to sum something or someone up instead of carefully describing all of their intricacies. It is in part this act of labeling in order to simplify that identity gets its' power. It is much better to be the "nice guy" or the "place of pasta and pizza" than to be the jerk or the war mongering state. In the case of nationalism; identity is usually generated the same way, tough countries are full of mountains and natural disasters and war whereas peaceful countries might be known more for food or culture. It is in these foods, cultures, wars and mountains that people forge a national identity for themselves. Identities may not always be intentionally created but made naturally out of the actions and ideals of its holder. In the case o

Marriage in the Bible

The Bible refers to marriage many times throughout itself, whether it is direct or indirect. "God created marriage. No government subcommittee envisioned it. No social organization developed it. Marriage was conceived and born in the mind of God," is a quote Max Lucado had said when writing about marriage (Reference 3). Marriage is the framework for mutual love and consists of interpersonal relationships (Reference 1). It is the solid foundation for romantic love to happen. Many people do not realize that marriage is more than just a ceremony or a legal document, it is explained throughout the Bible. It has many key concepts for it to be able to workout. However, sometimes it does not work out but God never intended for marriages to break up and end (Reference 12 pg. 44). The basic foundation of a marriage is when a man is ready to leave his mother and father, he will and unite as one with the woman he loves and marries her (Reference 1). Marriage is a big word with a lot o

Effectiveness of the Affordable Care Act

Time after time people get hurt, injured and end up not knowing what to do because they have no insurance coverage. Insurance companies now always area allowed to stop the coverage before the treatment is complete, deny certain patient, and give only a specific amount of money to pay for the person's needs. For these reasons, there are some people who wish to have health insurance but sadly, they cannot afford it and therefore, they are uninsured. There are over forty million American who do not have insurance because it either does not cover their needs, it is too pricy, or they have a preexisting illness. This was all happening before president Obama designed The Affordable Care Act. Obama's main goal when designing this act is to reform the health care system completely so that even though people cannot afford insurance, they can still get coverage. Obama's Affordable Care Act saves lives. People will no longer be denied coverage due to an illness they had before; they will always h

Sustainable Development and the Primark Case Study

Introduction Primark is an Ireland based well-known clothing retailer in Europe which works in different countries such as Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, United Kingdom and Netherlands. The problem currently faced by this company is that most of the suppliers of it are located in Bangladesh where the company's code of conduct is not properly applied. Primark is criticized by many pressure groups due to non-regulation of its suppliers in Bangladesh and low environment and social standard followed there and the situation further deteriorated for Primark after the Savar Building collapse incident there. The discussion in this report will revolve around the changing attitudes of the public, politicians and the business world to the environment. Likewise, it will be using the "Brundtland' definition of sustainable development to analyze the combination of business and environment and the environmental policies of Primark will also be analyzed along with suggestions to improv
