Paranoia and Entrapment in Film NoirIn the 1930's, comedies and musicals released by Hollywood were immensely popular with the public. They provided a release from the economic and social pressures of the Great Depression. But as the 1940's came along and World War II shook up the world, a series of movies began to appear in American cinema that were decidedly less optimistic. These movies, known as film noir, looked at the darker side of human nature and were marked by a distrustful, fatalistic view of the world. Despite their darkness, or probably because of it, they were fascinating and hugely entertaining, providing catharsis and acknowledging the ambiguity of an uncertain world. In the postwar boom years, the cynicism ran much deeper; we had been though a horrible war and won it, our enemies were vanquished, order was being restored. However, it was as if the foundation of our society had been permanently shaken by the conflict; no one could be trusted and no one was secure. America, in short, had lost whatever delu |

Variables of Squid AdaptationIn this given scenario, large cargo ships regularly move species around the ocean in their bulk tanks. When people sail the sea, marine organisms tag along and can invade and disrupt ecosystems. If a highly effective predator such as sperm whales or Tuna, who hunt by using eyesight and speed, were transported on one of these large ships and introduced into a region where squids live, this would destroy the squid's ecosystem and kill off or push out many of these organisms. These new predators will act as selective forces by changing the environment of the squids causing it to be a more dangerous place to inhabit. As I have learned from biology lab, survival of the fittest for any species is directly related to the amount |

The Leadership of Ho Chi MinhHo Chi Minh was the North Vietnamese leader during war with America. Ho Chi Minh shared the same political beliefs as his father. His father, Nguyen refused to learn French and lost many job opportunities in Vietnam because of this. Ho truly believed that Vietnam deserved to be free of colonial rule. However, Ho did attend a French school because the French language would help them with their dreams for Vietnam. Ho was a sailor for some time and experienced other colonies of French and seem to categorize them all with poverty throughout the entire population. When living in France, Ho converted to communism and became one of the founders of the French Communist Party. Yet I believe he was still a nationalist at heart because he came back and still assisted Vietnam gain independence. Some may say Ho Chi Minh cannot be a nationalist because he started a French Communist Party, but I disag |

Warrantless Wiretapping and National SecurityThe faced fire threats to establish the Bill of Rights, the British army marching on the Capitol, one of US greatest enemies with tens of thousands of missiles ready to be launched, worldwide fascism on the march, two World Wars fought at once, and Americans will give up their freedom just because a President decides to? The freedom of an entire nation, currently having approximately 317 million citizens, is being violated by their own Executive branch. The United States of America, the most powerful country, one of the superpowers, the most diverse country in the world, considered to have a stable and democratic government was disrespected by their own political leaders. Since Martin Luther King Jr.'s days of protest towards the benefits of the American citizens, he was wiretapped by the FBI for several years of his life. The FBI was able to know every single movement he said or made because they intercepted every type of communication he had. (McKenna and Feingold, 379) They starte |

Book Review - Band of BrothersThe men of Easy Company are willing to die for one another. But how did such bonds form? It all began at Camp Toccoa where 140 volunteer men go through a six month training course to be Parachute Infantry. "These nineteen-and-twenty-year-old enlisted men, free from the restraints of home and culture, thrown together in an all-male society, coming from all over America" joined Easy Company for the honor, thrill, and a little bit of extra money. But above all, they joined for the desire to be better than the average soldier. Their early days were filled with long runs up and down Mount Currahee, lectures on basic Army I.Q, and harassment from the arrogant 1st Lieutenant Herbert Sobel. Whatever they were doing, they were always singing, shouting in unison, chanting, or swearing. The men of Easy Company's bonds grew deep and strong under Sobel's tyranny and irrational actions. Sobel pushed E Company much harder physically than any other company. At Fort Benning, they embarrassed |

Batman Movie ComparisonEveryone loves a hero. Batman, although often seen as a conflicting hero of darkness, often battling his own thoughts and actions, is nonetheless Gotham's hero in all aspects. Anyone who follows the history and stories of this character knows the importance of Batman's heroism. However, this may not be clear for those who have not had the pleasure of being entertained by all of the Batman films and comics. Batman enthusiasts either loved, or hated these films. While Batman is hailed the hero of both Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman" and Christopher Nolan's 2008 "The Dark Knight," the two productions differ in dramatic details, each one suiting a particular mindset. Much like the Batman of the original comics both Burton and Nolan do a fine job of portraying the heroic efforts of Batman through Michael Keaton (Batman) and Christian Bale (The Dark Knight). While the appearance of Gotham City, the beloved home of Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman is quite different in |

Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert FrostAt just eight lines long, Nothing Gold Can Stay, is a complicated piece that jumps from the physical to the spiritual, all to tell the reader that perfection is short lived. Throughout Frost's poem, Nature is capitalized, and therefore personified, becoming symbols with human-like qualities. Frost also uses ambiguous lines, such as "Nature's first green is gold" (1). Along with his use of symbols, and ambiguity, Frost uses paradoxical lines, like "Her early leaf's a flower'' (3) and ' 'then leaf subsides to leaf'' (5) to reinforce his point of out of the ordinary preciousness being a quality that won't last. The tone is sad, yet reflective, as it informs the reader of how something remains prized but for a certain time frame. Robert Frost transitions from the natural world, to the spiritual world, using ambiguity, paradox, symbols and tone to assert his notion of the inevitable expiration of something precious. In the first four stanzas, Frost sets up th |

The Real Monster in FrankensteinIn the novel Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, the Creature is described by society as a heartless fiend capable of unleashing havoc due to his grim, horrific appearance, and is often dubbed as a monster. However, the true definition of a monster is one who commits malicious acts for personal gain and lacks the caring that a normal human being would have, clearly contradicting the fact that the Creature seeks a healthy bond with his creator and friendships with other human beings. In addition, Victor Frankenstein demonstrates more traits that define a monster than the Creature does due to his hostility to the Creature, desire for power and knowledge, and selfishness. In several instances throughout the novel, Victor acts in a barbaric and antagonistic manner towards his own creation, despite the Creature's initial kindness and innocence. Shelley utilizes dramatic irony when Victor is unable to discern the Creature's obliviousness after the Creature is born into the world, stating how the |

The Addiction of GamblingGambling is a very harmful addiction which may lead to the destruction of a person and their family and should, therefore, be banned by the government. It is clear that there are serious consequences of gambling and there is a wealth of research material available to support this though there is also substantial body evidence that indicates there are also some positive impacts of gambling. Arguments against gambling and its impact on economy, society and related to Mental health must be considered. Gambling has some positive impacts on economy. It has been argued that, just as in other industries, there are other benefits of gambling such as: employment, capital investment and both research and development investment (Department of Justice and Attorney-General, 2013). Furthermore, it has been stated that, as a result of gambling there has growth in the economy from overseas revenue and taxation (Hawke, 2000). In addition, the Productivity Commission estimates that in 2008-09 the benef |

Religion and Faith in HamletReligion today isn't quite what it was back in Shakespeare's time. For most people, it's the last thing that crosses their minds when they cheat on a test or lie to the people they love. Adolescents especially put little or no thought into the spiritual consequences that come with committing a sin. For example, people have come to believe that "little white lies", which are meant to be minor or "harmless", is absolutely normal and sometimes encouraged. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, religion has a much greater importance in people's lives and plays an important role in creating the plot and to some extent, causes conflict. In the Elizabethan Era, religion had a much higher priority than it does today. In Velz's critical essay, he wrote, "there is irrefutable evidence that William Shakespeare was more than merely single-minded about religion" ("On bards, bibles and bears: on Shakespeare and religion"). According to Velz's article, William Shakespeare w |

The Beatles of Yesterday and TodayThe album covers of the Beatles have been a revelation in popular pop music. "They have been seen as groundbreaking in their visual and aesthetic properties and have been congratulated for their innovative and imaginative designs they have also been seen as largely responsible for allowing the connections between art and pop" (Inglis 83). Progressing from album covers such as 'Please Please me' where the band is posing with smiling faces, to the album covers of 'Revolver' and 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' where the album covers have multiple images infused into a single image, to banned album covers such as of 'Yesterday and Today' and ultimately to the controversial 'Abbey Road' album cover the band has portrayed their album covers in a lot of variety. The banned album cover of 'Yesterday and Today' also known as the Butcher cover, shows the band posing in butcher smocks, surrounded by pieces of meat and dismembered baby dolls. |

Public Art in LondonPublic Art, according to Cameron Cartiere, is "art that is found outside of museums and galleries and must be either in a place accessible or visible to the public, concerned with or affecting the community or individuals, maintained for or used by the community of individuals, or paid for the public."1 When we look around us, we see public art in our daily lives. Millions of dollars are spent commissioning public works. In the United Kingdom, the Arts Council England incorporates nine regional offices, many of which have art officers who are charged with public art programming. In addition, dozens of cities and townships across the United Kingdom have local public art councils. Public art engages with the environment in the sense that it can reflect and reveal a society, add meaning to a city, and add uniqueness to a community. It humanizes the environment and invigorates public spaces by adding providing a medium where the past, present, and future can intermingle. Through public ar |

Clinical Cycles of SchizophreniaSchizophrenia is considered to be the most costly, severe, chronic and devastating psychiatric illness that presents the most challenging mental health problem (Andreasen, 1989; Carson, 1996). Considered the leading public health problem, the lifetime prevalence rate is high at approximately 1% of the population; the occurring rate is one in 4000 diagnosed per year with severe morbidity and significant mortality rates linked to a high numbers of suicides (Andreasen & Carpenter, 1993; Silverstein et al., 2006). Bleuler's unique concept, that the defining features of schizophrenia are the splitting of diverse psychic functions and disintegrating of the personality, saw the true improvement of an absolute mental health disorder, that had precise necessary negative symptoms (ambivalence, autism, affective blunting, & attentional impairment) and negative accessory symptoms (psychotic based hallucinations, delusions, bizarre behaviour and formal thought disorder) that are psychogenically det |

The Life of Gypsies During World War IIDuring World War Two, while much of the world was fighting a war against Germany, Germany was fighting another war against what it considered the "undesirables" of its countries. Most of these undesirables were Jews. Although there are a number of other groups who were targeted during this time. One of those groups was the Gypsies or Roma. Not much research has been done on this group, due to the fact that many European Roma were targets of prosecution long before the Holocaust. However, the events during WWII against the Roma should not be excused due to the prosecution of the Roma before the Holocaust. Although the Roma were prosecuted before the war, much this pre-war prosecution was not life threatening, and mostly constituted of laws preventing Romas from living in certain places. Unfortunately during WWII, it is estimated that Hitler's Nazis killed between 220,000 and 500,000 Roma. (Shulman, 2000) This was done through mobile killing units, work camps, and death camps. |

Homelessness in BostonHe was sitting under a tree on a bench to stay out of the sun on that hot summer day. His dirty white shirt had some holes in it and his shoes looked vey dirty and worn. This homeless man looked very tired and sad, behind his long hair and beard I could see a man without a hope, without a purpose. That whole afternoon that I was at the public Park in Boston I took glimpses at that strange man transitioning from sitting to lying on that bench. Right next to him there was a shopping cart, a worn out backpack was hanging on the side. The cart was full of different things; couples of dirty looking blankets were folded, some plastic bags, some cans and some cardboard paper. He stands up and grabs the cardboard paper, he lays the paper on the bench then he grabs one of the blankets and makes it into a pillow. He pulls the shopping cart closer to him, looks around and lies down with his cap over his face. For the next hour while this strange man was taking his nap, I took a look around and |

Recycling - The Reuse of WastePlanet Earth is our home. Many people care for it differently. Some people help the community by picking up trash, while others organize protest and chain themselves up to trees scheduled for cut down. Recycling is a good way to care for Mother Nature. More people should recycle for the benefit of earth. To begin, recycling helps people use less energy. For one thing, the United States uses an enormous amount of energy. Twenty percent of the energy in the world is used by Americans. The U.S. only makes up for five percent of the world's population. Secondly, recycling significantly reduces energy when using recycled material. The energy spent on using recycled steel only uses seventy-four percent of the energy that it takes to make and use new steel. Making new cans out of recycled cans saves energy on transporting the aluminum ore from other countries. Lastly, conserving energy is important. The amo |

The Cherokee RemovalWhile the United States were expanding west and south, white settlers faced an obstacle. This obstacle were the Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw, Seminole and, Cherokee nations that called the land their home. The white settlers did not care who had the land or who was living on the land; they believed that the Indian nations were in the way of progress. In the late seventeen hundreds and early eighteen hundreds U.S. officials started to demand tribes to stop their traditional ways of living and learn how to live like the white settlers. By this living of being an "individual farmer" Indians began to have more successful farms, more livestock and, began to become more educated in farming and as well as reading and writing by attending missionary schools. Meanwhile under the Treaty of Hopewell in seventeen eighty-five, the Indians thought they were protected by the United States and had land permanently. However, whites treated Indians unequal and did not believe that they had the |

Discrimination and Sexual OrientationIn today's day and age, everyone is talking about sexual orientation and what it means to be homosexual and transgendered. What people have been looking at, though, are just their rights to be married and adopt children. There is something else that the people of the LGBT community have to deal with: discrimination in the workplace. While doing some research, I found that discrimination that ensues in the workplace on the basis of a person's sexual orientation, though the numbers are small, is almost equivalent to the gendered discrimination against women, which is a whole problem in itself. This phenomena creates an issue in which homosexual and transgendered individuals earn ten percent less, or sometimes even more depending on the case, as opposed to their heterosexual coworkers (Croteau, 1996). Looking at it from an outside point of view, due to these facts, I feel that sexual orientation-based discrimination is becoming a significant problem in the United States. A lot of this di |

Modern-Day TerrorismThere are many global problems occurring in the present day. The one problem that stands out from the rest is terrorism. Terrorism is a worldwide concern so immense that everybody should be aware of it. Terrorism can be domestic or international, it has no boundaries. An act of terrorism could strike at any time, the atrocious aspect is that innocent people are losing their lives every day. There are many forms of terrorism in the world that are practiced. There is one type of terrorism that stands out from the rest in my eyes. That type of terrorism is suicidal terrorism. Suicidal terrorism is when someone commits a horrible sequence of deadly events, taking other people's lives, including their own. September 11th nineteen terrorist pilots hijacked planes and crashed them into the Twin Towers in New York City. Another hijacked plane crashed into an open field in Shanks Ville, Pennsylvania and took the lives of forty innocent passengers. With the forth pl |

House of Leaves by Mark Z. DanielewskiIn Mark Z. Danielewski's novel House of Leaves, Danielewski jumps between two narratives: the first the story of Johnny Truant, and the second the story of the Navidson family, which Johnny Truant reads. Throughout the novel, Danielewski explores the idea of what can best be described as the danger of curiosity. Although, for much of the book, Danielewski attempts to shroud the other "morals" of the story in symbolism and other literary devices, he approaches the subject of a revamped "pandora's box" with much more clarity. In the case of Johnny Truant, the danger of curiosity most directly applies to his intense reading of the dark and confusing Navidson family record, while in the case of the Navidson family itself, this idea can be seen in the family's exploration of the inexplicable architectural inconsistencies in their new home. Perhaps more original and effective than Danielewski's use of Johnny Truant's narrative and the Navidson family narrative, however |

My Grandmother RuthI loved visiting my grandmother. Her house was filled with people from the neighborhood both young and old, but she always made me feel special, like I was the only one who mattered. She would prepare large portions of food in case someone would drop by because she believes "never invite someone without feeding them." She would make different kinds of food like "chichinga" the tastiest spicy kebabs made from beef or sausages, "banku" made from fermented corn and is served with fried fish or meat and hot sauce, "red red" black eye pea beans cooked into fine bean curry with either a mix of prawns or fish, "waakye" spicy rice and beans which can be eaten with either fried fish, egg, spaghetti meat or fried chicken, and "groundnut soup" her specialty. Even though at first it might look like spicy curry, it is anything but curry and has additions of goat meat or beef. It is my to-die-for favorite of hers. I was named Ruth Yaa Ofeibea after my grandmother by my parents (dad to be precise) because she is his mother an |

The New Jim CrowThe United States of America has a relatively short-lived history in comparison to the majority of the vast societies of the world. As Americans, we pride ourselves on the concept that our ancestors fought tooth and nail for our freedom and we should never forget that concept. We pride ourselves on looking back through our history books and reading about how our forefathers have continuously stood up to the most powerful, unjust, and tyrannical nations so that the world may be able to experience the fore granted notion of freedom. When the grip on the throat of the new Americans became too much, a rag tag group of militiamen stood up against the British for what they believed in and defeated one of the most powerful and expansive army's that the world has ever seen. When Nazi Germany was committing the most atrocious, gruesome, and heinous violations of every moral code that we as a species have followed, the powerful Americans stood up for what was right yet again and defeated the Naz |

The Transition Assistance ProgramThe Transition Assistance Program was started in 1989 as a joint effort between the Department of Defense and the Department of Labor. The program was designed to provide separating service members with information on services and the benefits associated with becoming a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. In 2005, after the program was utilized by over 261,000 members it seems secondary analysis changed it to a more formed program where they had specified curriculum called TGPS. TGPS which stands for Transition (Goals, Plans, Success) which is the redesigned program to assist military members and their families in phasing back to civilian life after the diffusion of military life. It is a seven day class which, according to www.taonline.com, contains two days of training on personal finances, family adjustments, VA benefits, and mentorship. Then the Department of Labor comes in to do an employment workshop, involving writing a resume, practicing job interviews, job search practice, and how to use social media for these purposes. The last two days are optional focusing on specific interest such as college: attaining financial aid and class |
