The Bolsheviks: Ideology of Power

The radical shifts in policies towards the economic, social and political landscape of the Soviet Union from 1917-1924 can be mainly attributed to the Bolshevik party's desire to seize, consolidate and sustain power in the face of internal and external opposition. Although egalitarian Marxist ideology spawned ideal Bolshevik policies, to retain their power, Lenin prioritized pragmatism, ruthless terror and political survival above ideological purity. Bolshevik ideology primarily began to subside from its Marxist roots during the October revolution in 1917 in Petrograd, when the party first seized power from Kerensky's Provisional Government. Although these revolutionary intelligentsias established a "dictatorship of the proletariat" and pragmatic reforms that placated the masses, the working class were volatile and indecisive in their loyalties due to some inevitable decisions that displeased the working class. However, Lenin's April thesis presents Marxist ideology, as he strongly em

Cuba and the Monroe Doctrine

In the 1800s, the relationship allying the United States of America and Cuba originated from basic supply and demand. During the Spanish occupation, traders in Cuba and the colonies of America established illicit trading contracts in order to secure commodities required in the colonies as well as for colonists to dodge the colonial taxes on the imports to Great Britain. As time progressed, trade between Cuba and the United States slowly diminished due to the whims of the Spanish administration. Of course, the United States did not feel comfortable with such a fact especially on trading terms.1 Through trade-relations, Cuba became an important country to the United States to the degree where President John Quincy Adams had declared that he was interested in annexing the country as early as 18232-the year of the Monroe Doctrine. The doctrine was a US statement informing the powers of the Old World that the Americas were no longer open to European colonization, and that any effort to ex

Antony - A Deeply Flawed Character

Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra defies the stereotypes generated from any other Shakespearean drama, Antony is by its very definition a deeply flawed protagonist. This essay will discuss how Shakespeare adopts the use of imagery, language and dramatic construction throughout the play in portraying Antony as deeply flawed plus maintaining his stature as a tragic hero. Charles Moseley states, 'Renaissance plays are not books, but a visual and auditory experience played in a special building on a stage that carried out a great deal of symbolic charge for the audience.' Antony's tragedy is caused by situations beyond his ability to change; he is torn between his honor and his life in Alexandria. At meanwhile, he is also influenced by a number of primary inner flaws of character-his lack of political interest, impetuousness of character and a pursuit of personal pleasure. S Bethell suggests how 'Antony has a foot in both worlds.' Shakespeare does not have a hard task in maki

Literary Analysis of Pride and Prejudice

During the nineteenth century, marriage was an important factor in a woman's life. In her letter of March 13, Jane Austen states, "Single women have a dreadful propensity for being poor, which is one very strong argument in favor of matrimony" (Austen n pag). During this time, women married for convenience and financial gain rather than love. In Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet defies these standards, as she rejects two marriage proposals and goes against the norms of society by marrying above her social class. Pride and Prejudice symbolizes the importance of marriage, wealth, morals, and social status through the relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. Jane Austen uses Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy to convey her theme that despite troubles and tribulations, love conquers all. In the beginning, Elizabeth's initial prejudice clouds her better judgment and prevents her from seeing Mr. Darcy's true self. Elizabeth's first impression of Mr. Darcy is harsh

Short Story - New Jersey, Baby!

"Ow!!" My brother screamed out as he tried to open the car door. It was a baking hot July morning. My family had just finished packing their bags. My tia, Yolie, was helping my cousin, Roberto, put our bags in the car. I was sorta sad to leave because I couldn't stand being away from my dogs, Toi and Tai. They were brown and white teacup Chihuahuas.  The only thing that was worse then leaving my dogs was we were two days late leaving to New Jersey. Which had throw all of my planning off course. My cousins and I played around for a while because that would be the last time we got fresh air until we got to Jersey City which was 5 hours away. After about 25 minutes of running around and sweating  my mom told everyone to get in the car so we could hit the road. This is when my journey to New Jersey started.  I wasn't really sure how this vacation was gonna be. I was hoping for the best but expecting the worse. The first 30 minutes of the car ride it was completely quiet. No one said a word not even a noise. So then I ask my grandfather to turn on the radio hoping it would lighten the gloomy feeling. I soon got everyone singing and h

A Dream Within a Dream

Edgar Allen Poe is one of the more famous poets known for his dark, mysterious poems. Poe had a different view on the world than most people, almost similar to that of Emily Dickinson. His poems often have a deeper meaning hidden behind the dark scenes. Poe's poem "A Dream within a Dream" contains two stanzas each describing a certain experience. Each is very different both in content and in the way it is presented, but the same question is being asked. The meaning of the poem "A Dream within a Dream" is that everything in life is so fleeting and fragile, it is even more distant than a dream. Poe had suffered a large amount of loss in his life. His mother died when he was very young, shortly after his father had abandoned them. He married his 13-year-old cousin later in his life, but she later died from tuberculosis. Poe wrote this poem shortly after her death and less than a year before his own. The first line, "Take this kiss upon the brow!" shows us

Schools, Education and Social Class

In "From Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work", an article by City University of New York professor Jean Anyon, she explores the caliber of public education by social class. She monitors five different elementary schools all with different economic backgrounds over an entire school year. In her article, Anyon exposes the difference in the quality of education between wealthy cities similar to Beverly Hills, California and poor cities such as Compton, California. Although there have been many efforts by the government for all schools to be "equal", that isn't the case. The children in wealthier areas are prepared all throughout grade school to attend college and be successful in life; whereas the latter is prepared for working class jobs right out of high school without even a second thought about attending college. Over half of America's students are cheated out of the education they deserve. While some argue that education is equal throughout the United

Education and Power to the People

The word "democracy" originates from the Greek words "dēmos" and "kratia" which mean "people" and "power," respectively. Simply put, the word – from its original use – has always been associated with the idea of giving the "power to the people." To that extent, one of the most major democratic ideals has been to have a society where the populace is effectively capable of playing its major role in the government. The question of course arises, "how does a society achieve that capable populace?" To refer once again to the Greeks, that answer lies in education. The Greeks had mandatory education for boys up until the age of 14. Afterwards, most were sent off to study under skilled artisans, philosophers, or politicians. ("Ancient Greek Education") There they would learn how to become full participants in their society. Thus, starting with the Greeks and moving onward to other major societies thr

The Need for Financial Advisors

How often does one think about money? These days it seems the world only cares about money and for good reason. Money makes the world go round and can make one's life a lot easier. One of the easiest ways to accumulate money is through investing. It is easy because you do not have to put forth any effort to accumulate more money unlike working for a paycheck. Buy a couple of stocks and hope the value rises over time. Of course, it is not that simple or everyone would invest in stocks and be rich. Investing takes patience and a lot of research. Some would say that investing all the money they have saved over the years is best left to a professional advisor; while others prefer to save the costs associated with having an advisor and invest on their own. However, the added benefits that come with having an advisor such as the professional advice, expertise, and life planning, make the fees worth the investment in the end. First of all, it is useful to know how advisors are compensated

Bullying and Social Media

Social Media in the United States has become such a major problem in today's society and is continuing to get worse. Social media has grown in ways that nobody ever thought would be possible. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram allows you to find and connect you with people around the world. You can connect from an old coworker from high school, to the girl who played Dorothy in your elementary production of The Wizard of Oz twenty years ago. Surfing through sites like this makes you feel connected to a larger community, but also can have its downside. Bullying has no longer persisted with the real world. The cyber world has also been hurt with this matter where technology is now used to deliberately and constantly harm others. The Struggles of Technology

In order for a society to function new things have to keep evolving. The truth is that human beings get bored with the same traditional concepts. They need more and so they seek more; from this the internet was born into American culture. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing though, that is what is constantly up for debate. While the web is helpful because it gives fast results, it's leading to a change in the work ethic of Americans that is creating a culture of laziness. Technology has led to a decline in originality and the capability for people to think for themselves is continuing to diminish. I think it's safe to say that the citizens of this society tend to lean towards the demanding side. Demanding does not necessarily have a negative connotation it just means that culture has needs that they expect to be met. Fast results are the things that everyone is after; people are always looking for the easiest way out. Some will argue that this is not a bad thing because it ju

Iron Deficiency and Anemia

Introduction Iron deficiency affects a large proportion of children and women in the developing world and is one of the most common nutrition disorders; the only nutrient deficiency of significant prevalence in virtu- ally all developed countries. Iron exists in two oxidation states, either Fe2+, the ferrous form, or Fe3+, the ferric form. Iron changes between these forms, enabling it to serve as a catalyst in redox reactions by donating or accepting electrons. The burden and causes of iron deficiency are well established, the challenge remains for the adequate prevention and control of iron deficiency. Discussion Anemia is a commonly used indicator to screen for iron deficiency or to define the burden of iron deficiency in population-based surveys. There is a close association between anemia and iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia in most parts of the world. Iron deficiency anemia represents the severe end of the spectrum of iron deficiency and requi

Graffiti - The Art of Awareness

Graffiti is now becoming an increasingly popular and important style of art. In many countries all over the world, graffiti or street art can be found on public walls or buildings. It was mainly found in inner city communities, where poor youths tried to give themselves a "voice". It began as them just writing their names on subway trains trying to get fame and notoriety. The artists then realized they could express themselves through a can or two of spray paint and graffiti escalated because everybody wanted to be "heard." What was once only just for recreation or used to mark territories, became an art form and a means of expression. Graffiti artists tend to portray vivid emotions through their art in hopes of having an impact on people who see the art. Many of them depict political and social issues that usually affect their lives and the lives of the community they are in. Banksy is one such artist who manages to use his art to bring the awareness of social problems

Crow's Theology by Ted Hughes

Ted Hughes' "Crow's Theology" is written as an internal dialogue going on in the mind of a crow. The poem begins with what seems to be the crow's awakening in realizing his own existence. As the poem progresses, it gradually gets darker as the questions he poses get harder and harder to answer. By seeking the truth and tackling the unanswerable, the crow reaches the conclusion that all of what is good and bad is really just one in the same and that religious faith alone does not account for why evil persists. The crow seems to be representative of the average observer, viewing his/her life and taking note of what is seen. The poem begins with the crow grappling with the idea of God through the personification of individual consciousness, stating "Crow realized God loved him- otherwise, he would have dropped dead" (1-2). This suggests that crow identifies himself as being dependent on some source of life, referred to in this example as a theological "God&qu

A Pivotal Point in My Life

It was a cold January day, I had just received news the day before that I believed I would never get. My best friend, Pablo, someone I believed to be part of my family, a huge part of my life, and a huge part of me had passed away in a car accident. I had spent four years with this friend. We were as close as can be and read each other like a book. January 5th and 6th is a day I remember so clearly like if it was just yesterday. I spent most of my day crying with a couple of tissue boxes on my bed. I would not and could not believe that this was seriously happening right now. I was just blown away how much I really missed him and it had just happened. I didn't think I would ever be able to move on in my life ever, nonetheless move from my bed. However I knew that Pablo would want me too. That day my two amazing best friends Nicole and Katelyn came over to comfort me knowing how distraught I was. They actually ended up taking me to get frozen yogurt to be able to get my mind off things.

History and Philosophy of the Ku Klux Klan

In North America, two groups are well known and prominent to almost everyone. We call these groups the Ku Klux Klan, or the KKK, and the Mexican Cartel. In the past, these two groups have been issued a lot of publicity by the media. In recent years, the KKK and the Mexican Cartel have not had a lot of publicity. Our goal is to inform the general public about the reasoning behind the actions of each group, their history and geographical context, and most importantly, if each group is still active. Each part of our paper will be organized into five different sections, which does not include our conclusion. Our first section will delve into the history of each group and explain why each was formed. We will then thoroughly introduce and discuss the mission of each group and how they wish to accomplish this goal. Next, we will discourse about how many members each group has as well as where it is most prominent, and why these locations allow each group to thrive under the population and ge

The Rocking-Horse Winner

As an important image, the rocking-horse in the short story plays a vital role symbolically and thematically. It bears different symbolic meanings as the story goes, revealing the changes of the protagonist's inner world, and deepens the theme, intensifying the irony. The symbolic meaning of the rocking-horse varies with the development of the plot. When the "shining modern rocking-horse" makes its entrance at Christmas along with other "expensive and splendid" toys, it stands for vanity. In order to keep up their social position and maintain superiority over anyone in the neighborhood, the household struggles to live an elegant life with a small income and regularly spends beyond their means. The financial trouble doesn't prevent the parents from buying fancy gifts, including the rocking-horse to fill the nursery at Christmas as other upper –class families do. Therefore, their vanity finds expression in the rocking-horse which in turn aggravates the anxiety i

My Personal Code of Ethics

Honesty Being honest with other people and oneself is an important thing to add to ones personal code of ethics and values. Knowing what is real versus what is not, and being able to decipher the truth from fiction is an important asset to have in life. This can be applied in real life situations such as: finding out that one's true friends are right in front of them, realizing who is one's soul mate, and knowing what really makes someone happy. Being honest with oneself in all aspects of life is the key to happiness. This is because if someone can always be clear and aware of a situation, not mislead or naive, they will have the knowledge to properly approach the problem, instead of causing more stress and anxiety. Loyalty Listening to a friend when they're down, having someone's back who you've remained close to for a long amount of time, or sticking up for something you feel is wrong are all great examples of being loyal. I always try to be loyal and the best version of myself to those people who have been there for me, which, in my opinion, are the grounds for a long lasting, fulfilling friendship. This is due to the fact that if one i

Themes of Loyalty in the Book of Daniel

Unconditional loyalty is ultimately the uniting subject of the book of Daniel. Verses five through nine in the first chapter of the book depict the forceful re-education of human beings by other human beings. The absolute disregard for the exile's original values and principles as rational creatures brought the king to impose new names and diets upon them. And yet during the lonely time of exile, their unalterable minds creates hope that illustrates the durable bond between the honored god and the exiles. It is hope and denial to abandon native ideologies that ultimately marks loyalty as a recurring matter in the book of Daniel. Through out the book of Daniel, the idea that one will eventually "enter the king's service" is implemented and persuaded from every angle; however, the king does not welcome the unintelligent and the ignorant at his service. By the process re-educating, It is the drive to

Reflective Essay - Succeeding in College

Most of my moments in were overall good moments. I loved being in class this semester at first I wasn't expecting the teacher to be so nice and actually wanting to help you but I'm glad that had the chance to be in the class with Professor Olenjnik. These moments spent in the classroom has taught me a lot in the writing world. I really feel as if I learned so much in the little amount of time I was taking this course. Not just the atmosphere of the people in the room or the teacher itself it was everything itself. The peer review helped me guide on the most mistakes I tend to make on writing essays but with help from my piers I was sure to succeed in the writing world. I also liked if we didn't quite understand something how there would be a lesson over it just for us to understand it in a better way. Open class discussions made it easier to ask questions in the classroom and more calming to discuss if there was problem we had with an assignment. I am most proud of is how much confidant I have got in writing before I

President Roosevelt's Fireside Chats

On June 28th, 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) addressed the American public in his fifth fireside chat. At a time where several of his relief and recovery programs were in place and starting to effectively, yet gradually, raise the American public out of the Great Depression, FDR felt the urge to address his critics, who believed the expansion of government control over the economy was an infringement on American private life, and, subsequently, on classical American ideals and principles. The chat itself was titled "On Addressing the Critics,"1 since FDR attempted to assuage the fears of American citizens who saw his extension of government aid as a red flag for a authoritarian take over. During this time of crisis, in the middle of the Great Depression, with the threat of totalitarianism spreading across Europe, the American public was hesitant, yet hopeful of FDR's presidency and use of government. The fireside chats, and specifically, fireside chat 5, effectiv

Book Analysis - Jane Eyre

Equality is a word that surrounds the world and is something becoming incredibly prominent in everyday life. It is a struggle that has been fought by all races, ages, and genders, and one that will continue to be fought. In the novel Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte accurately reveals the inequality and inferiority women experienced during the Victorian Era by use of setting, stereotype, and feminism. The novel Jane Eyre is a book that is set in the early nineteenth century, during the Victorian Era. There are five main scenes in the book, all of them in the northern England area. During the Victorian Era, many women were held to standards or expectations. Women's morality and sensuality were very important during this time. For this reason, Bronte decided to take a romantic approach to the book. Bronte uses the theme of Sex Scandal to have a rebellious and romantic feeling. "The theme of sex scandal goes along with women's morality and sensuality because it, also, went against the pr

Changes in New York City's Central Park

Walking through New York City, you are constantly surrounded by masses of skyscrapers, dirty city streets, and it is refreshing to once in a while take a walk through a peaceful non-developed area filled with greenery. Located in the heart of New York City, Central Park is a massive man-made park that isn't only filled with nature but contains historical buildings, statues, monuments, beautiful bridges, bodies of water, a zoo, ice skating rink and hundreds of walking/bike paths. Despite the visual aspects that we witness today, Central Park didn't always look the way it did today and its history possesses many ups and downs. Since it was first constructed in the 1800's, the park has managed to undergo a complete downfall in the 1970's and then become restored into what it is today. This involved reconstruction of historical buildings, re-planting greenery, and making improvements in the management and security of the park. It wasn't a short or easy process, but Central Park has proven to be essential in improving the lives of its residents and making this city as g

America and the Fear of Communism

Communism is a political theory about leading a society to equality. The term "communism" is ambiguous because the world can argue whether it is good or evil. At one point, communism was vastly powerful and advocated by many people in poverty. However, America feared this political view because their ideology was very different from that of communism's ideology. America's foundation is capitalism where Communism's foundation is equality. The rise of communism caused a series of events that led Americans to fear communists around the world, in their own country and the possibility of a nuclear holocaust.  Karl Marx, who founded the idea of communism, had a theory that socioeconomic systems are holding human societies' progress through class struggle: a conflict between ownership class and laboring class. Surprisingly, this idea became enormous and spread to countries all over the world. One of these countries was Russia where some people disagreed with their government struct
