Healthcare and Patient Privacy

Health Research has been ongoing for centuries if not eons. People associated with the medical field have over the years studied and analyzed various issues or developments that have occurred in the human body. Many have even gone on to recognize similarities between the human beings and particular animals like monkeys, or rodents like rats and have carried out examinations on them so as to pre-test various things before releasing them to the access of humans. But in order to make these milestones, is patient information meant to be shared between researchers? Or is it more important to stick to patient privacy and confidentiality practices? As it stands currently, there is no concrete definition of the word privacy which has led to scholars debating and drawing their own conclusions on the matter. But according to one scholar, he believes, Privacy is experienced on a personal level and often means different things to different people (Nass). I believe privacy is where one is entitled

The Information Era of Internet

The last century brought us the most influential invention, the internet. Every aspect of life has been drastically changed. The area most affected by this change was the business community. From conducting and communicating in a business to better services and quality, the effects of this invention can be clearly seen. It has come to the point where today there can't be success in the business world without internet. The internet has revolutionized the business community in many ways. With the invention of internet, a door to a new way of succeeding in the business world was opened. Before technology and internet, small businesses were more localized. Survival depended on knowing when and what were the local customers' needs. This all changed once internet was introduced. A business is no longer dependent on its local customer base for its survival; it now has a worldwide audience for its goods

Film Review - The Mission

In Roland Joffé's 1986 movie The Mission the film incorporates the fall of the Jesuit missions in the borderlands between Paraguay and Argentina in the mid-1700s. Spain and Portugal signed a treaty renegotiating a borderline between Spanish and Portuguese territories in South America, with Portugal taking control of a previously owned Spanish region on the Paraguay River. In this area were a number of mission communities, founded by the Jesuits, where thousands of native Guaraní converts lived. (Greydanus, 2002). These missions, known as reductions, which was a term of colonial hubris indicating that the natives, who once lived in the wilderness, had been "brought back", or "brought together" in community by the preaching and civilizing influences of the Jesuits, who brought with them technology, law, and the gospel (Campbell, 1921). The setting of the movie takes place in South America in the 18th century, where two dominate groups of people, slave traders

Search for Approval in The Kite Runner

A father's affection and ideals are the bedrock upon which their children's ideas are constructed. This idea is especially prevalent for Baba and Rahim Khan throughout Khaled Hosseini's novel, "The Kite Runner," where they demonstrate their vastly different approaches to raising Amir. First, Rahim and Baba differ in how they empathize with Amir's requirements and desires. Baba tends to have a harsher outlook while Rahim possesses the ability to relate to Amir. In addition, a good father has the innate ability to make his child feel appreciated and instill them with unequivocal confidence. Rahim is the person Amir relies on for this and Baba finds it difficult to express sufficient support for his son. Rahim appears to have a higher tolerance level when dealing with Amir in comparison to Baba who has a short temper and is easily irritated by seemingly innocuous things. Despite Baba being Amir's biological father, and the one Amir is supposed to love categorically, it is Rahim Khan who u

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

Irony is "the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect" (Google, Definitions). The Lottery takes place on a warm summer's day in June. There are only 300 people in the village, so the lottery takes only two hours. The village children, who had just finished school, run around and collect stones. The parents then join and they stand together waiting in anticipation for the annual Lottery to begin. There is a list made of all the families in the village and each member then represents a piece of paper. Tessie Hutchinson then joins the crowd late and flustered completely forgetting the day of The Lotter. She then joins her husband and family while the other villagers joke about her late arrival. Mr. Summers finishes calling out the names of the families and they are instructed to then open the papers. Word travels fast the Bill Hutchinson has the black dot. Tessie argues that it wasn't fair beca

Skating Across Cultural Gap and The Kayak

"Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan." -Tom Landry. It is the encouragement along the way from others that help build the success to achieve the goals we have set. The two pieces of writing read are vastly different but also can be connected in many other similar ways. The reading from Kevin Allen's article, Skating Across Cultural Gap Jordin Tootoo is inspired to be the biggest role model for all, particularly aboriginal kids. Jordin Tootoo is a ray of hope for everyone. He tells his inspirational story one on one to his community in hopes to help keep other kids from making bad mistakes or going down a wrong path in life. Jordin Tootoo takes his position as a role model very seriously because he is aware of the troubles his people are facing, and he knows he can be influential in the decisions they make. Compared to Debbie Spring's short story, The Kayak, Teresa loves kayaking. On the water, she is brave

Fantasy Literature and Fantastic Language

Fantasy Literature and Fantastic Language There are many factors that contribute to the history of a culture. In many instances the historical literature that stems from different cultures shares in the history. Literature can also help shape the history of a specific culture. There are many positive aspects to learning the different literature that stems from different cultures. When events happen in a culture's history, this can be reflected in the literature from that culture. Stereotypical aspects of each culture can also be found within its literature. Comparing literature from two different cultures can highlight the similarities and differences from each culture. An Irish poem and a fantasy novel from America hold many different aspects of each culture. Each form is very different, yet holds many truths for its own culture. Irish Poetry Although Ireland may be small in size, it has had a profound impact with its literature. The printed word was established early in Ireland. Th

Superpowers of the Cold War

The cold war was a period of hostility which lasted over 46 years. It was a bunch of proxy wars between the USSR and the US and their respective ideologies, Capitalism led by the US and communism led by the USSR . This war could also be described as the disagreement between two opposing forces, capitalism and communism. The aftermath of the second world war left the US and Russia as the highest dominant military powers, but they had completely different government regimes and economic regimes. One can say that both parties were at fault for this war but I feel that the USSR is at fault. Although both Truman and Stalin broke the tension between Western Europe and Asia, Stalins obsession over converting the world into communism is what caused such rebellious acts from western europe, which inevitably forced them to resist to preserve its social and political culture. 1917 was the point where a clear difference between the "West" and Russia was established, Russia was mainly re

Indigenous Australians and the Constitution

Despite this popular recent movement of Australians thinking we need to formally recognize Indigenous Australians in the constitution, this is only a surface case and issue. Meaning that it is seen to be very obviously one way at first, but when you delve deeper into it, it becomes clear that it is actually quite the opposite. Here are some of the legalities as to why this should not occur. The only place the constitution is actually used formally is in Canberra in the High Courts, so a change in this document won't actually be providing direct protection of rights and freedom of discrimination for the indigenous. Things that currently provide protection of culture and equality are laws and acts such as Heritage Acts and the Act of Recognition. With these laws already in play, let me ask you this: what new changes can be made to the constitution that isn't already in effect through other campaigns? They were very successful in changing the lives of many for the better already.  We do agree that changes should be made to create more equal living rights among every Australian, not just the indigenous, but any Austra

Dance Review - The Seven Deadly Sins

The seven deadly sins are a list of moral and spiritual rules identified by St. Joseph Cassian. They give understanding to the way people should live their lives free of sin in order to please God. These sins include lust, envy, sloth, pride, wrath, gluttony and avarice. Avarice also known as greed or covetousness is the desire for material objects and ignoring the spiritual aspects to get said objects (http://www.deadlysins.com/sins/). Leigh Warren choreographed a unique piece with the theme of Avarice for the ABC special called "The Seven Deadly Sins". Warren explored the themes in Avarice and took the dance out of the traditional stage setting and put it into a casino. This piece is very visually interesting in terms of setting and costuming, the glamour of the casino enhanced by the sophisticated make-up and costuming. Using clever non-movement components of the piece added to the message of Avarice and helped portray the sin to the audience successfully. Leigh Warre

Short Story - Shattered Flames

The sound of excitement echoed through the empty hollow house, with a wonderful zeal of tired hope, at last we had found a place to settle down and call home. Moving four times in less than two years, with an energetic, hormonal teenage son and a toddler that refused to stay still for a second, was definitely a task tying to keep under control, alongside of dealing with the rigorous problems of staying on top of things. Settling in the new home and arranging things in a orderly manner that would suit everyone's purpose was accomplished in no time with the help of everyone, leaving extra time for me to take care of unfinished business an relax on the sofa with my favorite television program. Rather than wait for my husband to be included in a wide-range layoff in all departments on his job, for fear that the same situation we had just undergone would happen again, and being almost penniless not able to afford the financial demands of family and household, I was determined to look for e

Overview of Judaism

As the founding faith of the Abrahamic religions, Judaism is very interesting and at times very complex. Coming from a Christian background, I am somewhat familiar with a few of the customs of the Jewish people because of the Old Testament; though there is much I did not know about them until I actually experienced a part of their culture myself. During this encounter I visited the synagogue Beth Shalom where I was openly welcomed and participated in what the Jewish people call a Shabbat. Shabbat means to cease or stop; this is in regards to the Sabbath that takes place from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. The Sabbath is practiced as a Holy day in which the Jews refrain from any work related activities, it is normally spent with family at home resting and relaxing. While at the synagogue I was greeted by a few of the congregation members as well as Rabbi Torap, who is a female Rabbi which is not very popular in Judaism. It's unpopular because it is a fairly new path that Judaism ha

The Rocky Path to Citizenship

Immigration into the USA has recently become a contentious issue in the national debate which confused me a lot when we started the discussion on immigration. My first thought about immigration was allowing undocumented immigrants to live in the United States and be able to work and not fear deportation. While writing the first paper, my sources said that most undocumented immigrants who come to the United States are highly-skilled and innovative. According to the article, U.S. High-Skilled Immigration, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship: Empirical Approaches and Evidence from the Harvard Business School, article writer and professor, William R. Kerr explains that Immigrants make up for our U.S. workforce and the highly skilled immigrants promote "know

Overview of Audits and Reports

Audits are usually taken the wrong way and are every so often terrifying word that makes school bookkeepers tremble. In fact, an audit is essential and extremely rare instrument to retain financial order. Auditing is usually the culminating act in the business of protecting the assets of the school district; it is used in some form and to some extent by all school districts (Brimley, V., Verstegen, D.A. & Garfield, R., 2012). The requirements for the audits and reports includes that each month, the school submits a Student Activity Report to show how these monies were collected and deposited. The Bookkeeper maintains receipts for each purchase and deposit slips or records for each deposit or transfer. This is necessary because every year, lots of monies transfer in and out of school's account. The bookkeeper manages the whole thing, but the principal and the district budget committee are accountable for the money and to make sure that it is being controlled correctly. In this perspecti

History of Special Education

In the peak of the 1970s, there were masses of children with exceptionalities that received poor, unsuitable or no ESE services from the public school system and another vast amount of children were barred from school completely. Numerous states had regulations that explicitly rejected certain children, for example, children who were deaf or blind, children with emotional or behavioral issues, and children who were "feeble-minded". (Keogh, 2007) In 1960, a momentous decision was handed down that was founded in the attempt to end discrimination in the school districts against African Americans. In that decision, Brown v Board of Education, the nation was ordered to stop treating African Americans differently than others were treated. (Myhill, 2008) Little did the nation know that significant decision would impact not only the education of African Americans but it would have a historic impact on the way special education students were to be educated in American public schools. For the average student with average or above average abilities that has

Fall of the Ottoman Empire

Freedom is an essence and a basic need for all living beings. In 1914 the Ottoman Empire began to prosper and grow in the Middle East while the Europeans looked upon them with rage and frustration. Just after World War One, the Europeans took a call to action and demanded that the Arabs revolted against the Ottoman Empire (The Arab Revolt of 1916). In return the British promised to grant the Arabs their own land, however they did not execute their plan and created mandates meaning that Europe essentially owned and directed the middle east's every move. In this case, Europe was not justified in making mandates because they were disloyal, selfish, and because everyone deserves their own freedom. Never did the Europeans make a valid deal, they always conveyed false promises. In The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, T.E. Lawrence states, "The Arab Revolt had begun on false pretenses" (2). This goes to show that the agreement between Britain and the Arabs was never stable enough to be suc

IT Project - My Observations

Work Experience and My Observations in IT Project Project administration patterns frame a wellspring of profitable information in which past experience is separated into a progression of circumstances and arrangements, which can be effortlessly sought and connected together to shape a system of thoughts through which administrators can assess and survey the suitability of basic methodologies for usage in their own particular circumstances. Once actualized, managers can contribute their own particular encounters again into the example database, which serves to grow and build the measure of certifiable data that the examples contain, and through reiteration of this procedure the quality and amount of examples will drastically increase (Lientz,2011). There additionally exists a wide mixture of characterized and normally executed project administration techniques which are given as a strict structure that the mangers will form their group to, with diverse strategies customized towards dist

Leadership of Ralph in Lord of the Flies

In William Golding's classic 1954 dystopian novel of survival on a deserted island, a group of British school boys find themselves marooned without adult supervision. Of these boys, two stand out. Throughout the novel they are in constant battle for leadership of the group. Ralph, however, clearly demonstrated that he is a better leader due to his leadership style, level of intelligence and capacity for empathy. Ralph demonstrates a superior level of leadership compared to Jack. Ralph know what needs to be done and takes control when things are not going according to plan. When the boys had gone out of control, Ralph stepped up and said "We need an assembly. Not for fun, or for cleverness. Not for these things. But to put things straight." (Golding 84) Ralph also demonstrates leadership by making rules. He states, "Because rules are the only thing we've got." (Golding 99) Ralph is aware that the rules he made will help to keep the group organized, sane and control

Concepts of State Surveillance

Communities and law enforcement agencies in many countries are often faced with many challenges and hazards caused by the existence of drugs, weapons, terrorism and generally any form of criminal acts. Modern technological progress has improved law enforcement abilities to expose previously concealed wrong doing by the use of obtrusive search methods. Such technological methods as advance surveillance are used by governments to support in acquiring information from many factors of life. Some methods in which a state or government may acquire their knowledge on the issues pertaining to national security of a person, organization or a country may be deemed as unethical and illegal because of the tactics that are used to gather such knowledge. Some may dispute that the ethics of state surveillance actions should be reviewed according to the means, the perspective and the circumstances of collecting data or information with the use or goal of the act. In looking at what state surveillan

Supermax ADX Prison

Anatomy/Structure The makeup of the 37 acre large ADX (Administrative Maximum Facility) "supermax" prison, built in 1994 in the rocky mountains of Florence, Colorado is not too complex, however, it does have very strong security. The ADX was constructed in a way to keep the prisoners from escaping. Aside from their cells the only other site that they see is the "empty swimming pool" which, according to sometimes-interesting.com has a 4-inch by 4-foot skylight as the only window. It is designed to prevent the prisoners from knowing where they are. In fact there has not been a single escape nor any serious endeavours to do so. Their living situation is unique in comparison to most other prisons. Everything in the inmate's rooms

Environmental Implications of Tourism

In this hectic contemporary society, tourism is one of the most substantial entertainments for people all around the world. Hundreds and thousands of tourists from different countries travel every nook and cranny of the land. Therefore, there must be certain direct impacts occur from the tourism. Such direct effects can be readily found in the environment of tourism industry. Specifically, most problems can be found throughout not only the resource consumption, but also severe environmental pollution (Evans, Environmental Impact of Tourism). To begin with, almost measureless of different types of resource use of tourism incur abundant adverse effects on environment. In other words, water and any kinds of energy consumption such as electricity are being the main concern of degradation of the atmosphere and sewage. To be more specific, the tourism industry indeed uses up huge amount of water, especially on holidays. According to the statistics, water usage of holidays is approximately 440 liters a day, which is a double amount th

Wangari Maathai - Kenyan Defender

The European colonization had a major impact on Africa. Kenya happened to be one of them. 1845 marked the start of the colonization of Kenya, before that, Kenya was not considered to be an ordinary country, but rather it was composed of multiple different tribes that lived next to one another. Kenya was given to Britain at the time. Europeans brought with them medicine, education, technology, and religion that were never seen before by the people of Kenya. The new way of life did have a major impact on the people of Kenya and it did help them in many ways but, it also had drawbacks on the people of Kenya because their old way of living was quickly being demolished and they were forced to adapt to the new western lifestyle. Education was one of the things that changed Kenya after the British introduced it. Education is a key factor for equality between genders because education empowers a person. At the time education was mainly for men because most women were housewives and they took

Vietnamese Victory Over the French

In northwest Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh's Viet Minh forces decisively defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu in 1964, having a momentous impact on the conflict in Indo-China. The victory was disastrous for international and domestic concerns, signalling the end of French colonial influence in Indochina. It also had a major but not decisive impact on the 1952 Geneva conference, clearing the way for the division of Vietnam along the 17th parallel; which in turn would lead to the creation of the National liberation front against the corrupt Diem regime, inevitably catalysing the 2nd Indochina war into play. In March 1954, Giap began a siege of the French base at Dien Bien Phu, killing 2200 and imprisoning 6500, forcing French forces to surrender. The higher Vietnamese casualties (8000 dead and 15000 wounded) could not disguise that this was a very humiliating defeat for the French. This victory catalysed the realisation that military victory over the Viet Minh would not come easily, nor would it

My Relationship with My Father

Past I was born in 1989 and, at that time, my father was 32. My parents had only one child as a boy, so they always wanted to have a girl. Especially my dad was happy about he finally got a girl. When I was growing up as a toddler and in early childhood, my father was always busy. He had just changed to another job so, he had to work really hard. He was achieving his career successfully, however not in good relationship with me. The biggest problem was he gave all the responsibility for rearing children to my mother, so he did not know anything about how to take care of baby or handle the child development. For example, my father ignored me all the time when I was toddler because I cried so much. Now, I can understand him, it was because of so much stress from his work, as a natural procedure of early adulthood. However, with my personal background, this affected pretty much on the relationship with my father. I feel more comfortable with my mom rather than my father,

Continuing Academic Success

As a people pleaser, it is extremely important for me that I find a certain level of success. Failure is not an option for me, whether it is knowing that my parents want, or need, to live vicariously through my achievements, a dream of giving my children more than what I had growing up, or my need for a sense of fulfillment. In my past attempt to get my degree, I didn't approach the situation the way I should have - I didn't have a game plan. Learning has always come easy to me, so I just assumed that I could glide right through like I had done since kindergarten. I was wrong. The possibility of failure that I had completely dismissed became very real. I was embarrassed and and wondered just what my future would hold for me without my degree. Now, in my second attempt at Phoenix, I know that there are certain essential practices that I will need to reply to reach the level of success I want to see. The main factors that will aid in my academic success are setting goals for myself usin
